Philistine

Start by giving us a little Introduction, your name, age and where you life and what you do? Hi, My name is Gali, I grew up in Israel, and moved to NYC when I was 20 years old. New York has been my home for the past 25 years! About 15 years ago I discovered Williamsburg and settled in. Williamsburg is one of those exciting places that combines urban life with some clear sky and lot of creativity. Especially 15 years ago, it was an “out of the box” place, where people came to think differently and not depend on the city for affirmation if that makes sense. How does a typical day look like for you? I haven’t had a typical day in a while….this season of my life is all about figuring out every day as it comes. Running a business gets me involved in everything from figuring out the E Commerce platform, Social Media, PR, and creating my dream collection.

What was your first steps into the fashion industry? I always ( always) loved Fashion. I went to a fashion high school, and later attended F.I.T. I worked for all kinds of companies and my last career move was being a Director of Design for Victoria’s Secret. I loved leading a team through successful launches and collections, traveling the world, and bringing ideas to life presented by few of the most beautiful women in the world‌.

You were designing for Victoria secret for years? Despite designing underwear was the design process very different from your creative process today? If yes - In what way? Designing to me is having a dream come to life. An idea that takes shape. When working for a big company, you live their dream and use their filters. Having my own collection, is very different in the way that now the dream is mine, it’s personal to me. The idea of

ONE CULTURE

and bringing cultural references out of their comfort zone is my mission. Philistine is about INDIVIDUALITY.

A Philistine is someone who is indifferent to art and culture and that resonates with me as a place where definitions end and Individuality rules. It’s a clean slate to see the world through fresh eyes without pre-conceptions and definitions. Cultural differences are often also walls between us. My thinking is that all the beauty around belongs to us all. This ideal of a world where we mirror each other (and delight in our own reflection).

We are all part of the same, we are creating history every day, this is our time to shine.

How many people are working with you for Philistine? I work with various people in digital marketing, PR, sampling, product development, Production, Photography, videography. But officially, I’m the founder and the only employee. What are your hopes and dreams for the brand and yourself personally? I’m hoping for people to identify with the brand on a conceptual level, being a brand that is not about a cookie cutter message. I feel that people today are looking for more than just ” fashion”, they are also looking for way to break barriers and diversity is something that intrigues and creates a new world. A world where the ideas of cultural divides are blended. But I also hope to make clothes that empower people to be themselves and look good in the process!

Where are you right now in your life and can you give us a glimpse of how you balance a daily life being a mom, supermodel and an entrepreneur in busy New York? It is definitely chaotic as I’m sure yours is as well! I balance being a mother and traveling for my job with as much grace as possible … sometimes it is rather difficult but I’m sure many working mothers and fathers feel the same way. It isn’t always a simple feat but I try to always make my child feel safe while doing what I must do to continue working. For people who doesn´t know your story - How did your modelling career begin? My modeling career began at the age 16. I came to visit my sister Frankie, who is a model, for a week and ended up being signed by an agency. It all sort of fell into place without much thought. With that being said, it was a very different time in Fashion. You are now 39 turning 40, how do you feel about that and how do you feel about age in general? I think the way one accepts or comes to terms with the aging process is a process that requires much thought. Of course it is rather difficult to accept every aspect of aging so we must embrace wholly what we can.

My body has definitely grown achey but my mind is much more capable and conscious then when I was younger. It is a difficult concept but one must try to control what they can and find a way to let go of what cannot. I have found the creative process to play a vital role in this transforming symbolically what one may not be able to do literally. Having a life with so much attention on your outside what have you done to balance that out so you wouldn’t lose your mind? Interesting question. I think the fact that in many ways Being accepted in fashion was not without many conflicts from the outside, in terms of the way I look, specifically having hips and more of an athletic build. I think when one is rejected for something they cannot necessarily control it forces you inside yourself in a different way and in actuality it made me much stronger psychologically.. but not without suffering. Tell us a little bit about your work with your Husband. Penumbra obscura was developed as a result of Marko and my desire to embark on a creative process which combines both of our passions involving art and

interiors. All of our patterns are first drawn with either ink or pencil by Marko,(whose medium is charcoal) and then we expand the pattern by implementing different color combinations. All of our patterns are not only and purely visual creations but also reflect our passion for symbolism in art. Was it scary for you to start this creative journey with him, and the fact that the result would be something created by your passion? Did you feel vulnerable? I think we both felt vulnerable in bringing together our own creative world and/or perspective. It is definitely work but we are both very pleased we embarked on this journey together. You are still very busy in the modelling field as well, what is your recent best experience and why? I loved shooting the Miu Miu campaign with Katie Grand and allaisder Mclellan. It was really cool to work with Katie again and with a lot of the younger, newer models who I had never met. Being a creative person and being self dependent also means times with ups and downs workwise, are you good at not blaming yourself for times with for example lower income, times with not so much work?

For almost everyone I talk to including myself, this is a challenge as our society and ourselves often measure success by our income, do you have a good advice on how to deal with this feeling on a daily basis? The nature of this business and being self employed can provoke instability in terms of what is coming in. Although it can be quite daunting at times I think the most important thing is to be able to ride these waves and have faith in what will come next. I think it is important not to identify with society’s measure of success but rather discover that within and continue to challenge oneself individually.

Unfortunately it doesn’t always play out in the collective in terms of financial security but that is the state of the world now and one must try not to give it too much value. Of course we require money to live and when it isn’t coming in it is a real fear but it doesn’t equal success. What do you think are the key ingredients for a successful life? I think it is so different for everyone. For me it’s about having a balance with my personal life, work, travel and having a creative world that one can escape into when it gets too dreary out there. What has been one of your hardest concepts to bring to life? Letting go…It is and has always been a challenge for me which takes a real act of the will to move on. And finally do you have any exciting new projects coming up? More wallpaper and more work.

BEHIND THE SHOOT

Behind the shoot by Photographer and My8days creator Anja H Poulsen For this issue we for sure went around the world

Our COLOR SPLASH editorial is from our trip to South Africa where we got the pleasure to work with great model Simone. Simone is also a dancer so it was such a fun shoot, she just moved so naturally around and played with the dresses so all we had to do was follow along and capture her, check out the full editorial and see our favourites to get the look.

Our `Last days of summer` editorial is also from Cape Town with the Model Rochagne from Max Models. We are still not ready for autumn to hit us, so this is our last memories from the lovely summer days and nights. //

Model Simone is getting her makeup done by amazing makeup artist Neveen Scello

For Our Covershoot I went to New York and had a great photoshoot with the supermodel and creative entrepreneur Missy Rayder, I worked with her before and she is just stunning so we just played with the fierce jewellery, talked and laughed. Check out the full cover story and read the inspiring interview.
