Sims Metal and TDL Equipment Celebrate

UK’s First Electric Atlas Scrap Handler: An Innovation

Stepping Toward Sustainability and Enhanced Efficiency

In a monumental stride toward innovation and sustainability, Sims Metal, a leading name in the metal recycling industry, has joined forces with TDL Equipment to unveil the United Kingdom’s first electric Atlas scrap handler. This landmark achievement stands as a testament to Sims Metal’s commitment to advancing the industry while prioritizing environmental consciousness, operational safety, and collaborative partnerships.

The decision to acquire the first electric Atlas scrap handler in the UK represents a convergence of factors that underscore Sims Metal’s dedication to pushing the envelope. From sustainable practices to operational safety, infrastructure adaptability to fostering collaborative partnerships, the journey toward incorporating this cutting-edge machinery echoes Sims Metal’s pioneering ethos.

14 Ballyvesey Plant News | Winter 23/24

Empowering Machine Operators: Enhanced Efficiency and Positive Feedback

As the electric Atlas scrap handler took its place in the daily operations at Sims Metal, machine operators quickly embraced its advantages. Just two weeks into its use, an operator revealed a marked preference for the electric version over its diesel counterparts. “The electric scrap handler provides an elevated user experience,” remarks Luke, an operator at Sims Metal. “The cabin feels more spacious, offering ample legroom. Additionally, the continuous linear power delivery enhances performance and operation smoothness.”

Though the initial experience faced challenges to be expected with a new machine, Luke acknowledges that these problems have been swiftly addressed. “The issues were promptly resolved by the team at TDL, and we’re now operating without hitches.”

Enhanced Efficiency and User-Friendly Daily Checks

The electric scrap handler has brought forth practical benefits. Operators have noticed that daily checks have become more straightforward. “With no need to check engine oil or deal with diesel fuel, daily checks are sim-

plified. It’s a visual inspection and a hydraulic oil check, making it efficient,” states Darren, another Sims machine operator. Moreover, a significant reduction in noise within the cabin has been noted, enhancing the operator’s working environment.

Director’s Vision: From Performance to Sustainability

Directors at Sims Metal are equally enthusiastic about the shift to electric machinery. Paul Wake, a key figure at Sims Metal, highlights the substantial operational advantage of the electric scrap handler.

However, Paul emphasizes that further modifications are underway, considering this innovative endeavour. “Being the pioneers, we have further suggestions related to compliance and safety. TDL Equipment is actively addressing these to further improve this already fantastic machine.” Paul affirms.

The electric Atlas scrap handler has undergone a redesign by Atlas specifically for Sims Metal, introducing an Integral Emergency Recovery System. This innovation enables the machine to move in the event of a power failure, enhancing safety protocols. Additionally, benefits of reduced emissions and improved air conditioning, especially when idle, have been lauded by

operators.

Commitment to Sustainability and Reduced Carbon Footprint

Sims Limited – Sims Metal’s parent company - is steadily working towards ambitious climate actions: becoming carbon neutral by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Electrifying equipment is one of the key pillars in Sims Limited’s decarbonisation plan, this will help eliminate fossil fuels from its operations - and when combined with 100% renewable electricity, drives further emissions reductions across the business. All Sims Metal UK sites already operate on 100% renewable electricity and the business is committed to using 100% renewable electricity across all of its global operations by 2025.

“As part of our journey towards net zero, we are investing in a greener future wherever possible,” Stuart Wilcox, Global Category Manager Mobile Plant at Sims Metal. The reduced heat and minimized oil usage in the electric machine lead to a safer and cleaner working environment, reflecting the company’s dedication to responsible practices.

Gaz Bourne, a representative from TDL Equipment, further highlights

www.ballyvesey.com 15

the safety aspect of the electric scrap handler. “With the Integral Emergency Recovery System, the machine can travel under its own power to other areas on site or away from potential hazards like fire, ensuring an additional layer of safety.”

Collaboration with TDL Equipment: A Catalyst for Progress

The relationship between Sims Metal and TDL Equipment has been pivotal in this groundbreaking endeavour. “Our longstanding relationship with TDL Equipment has been founded on transparency and proactive collaboration,” Stuart emphasizes. “Issues that arose during this transition were promptly addressed with professionalism and efficiency.”

Gaz Bourne shares Stuart’s sentiment. “Working closely with Sims Metal to introduce the electric scrap handler exemplifies what strong partnerships can achieve.

Addressing challenges and innovating together have been the cornerstones of this collaboration.”

A Step Towards Reduced Operational Costs

Moreover, the introduction of the electric scrap handler is projected to significantly reduce operational costs. Stuart projects a substantial reduction in operational costs with the adoption of the electric version.

Gaz summarises, “The electric machine’s reduced maintenance requirements, not requiring filters and oils that a diesel machine needs, and AdBlue to meet emissions standards, also taking into account the recent government change regarding having to use white diesel instead of the cheaper red diesel, combined together present a compelling case for the shift.”

Embracing the Future

As the curtain rises on the UK’s first electric Atlas scrap handler, Sims Metal’s journey toward innovation, sustainability, and partnership shines brightly. This pioneering achievement not only reflects the company’s commitment but also serves as a beacon for others in the industry, encouraging them to embark on a similar strategy.

The electric Atlas scrap handler, with its implications for enhanced efficiency, safety, and sustainability, is reshaping the landscape of the metal recycling industry. “We’re not just investing in machinery; we’re investing in our future, in the environment, and in making a lasting positive impact,” Stuart concludes.

Powering the Future:

Lithium Batteries vs Lead-Acid Batteries for Electric-Powered Construction Machinery and Access Equipment

In the ever-evolving landscape of construction machinery and access equipment, the shift towards electric-powered solutions has been gaining momentum. With a focus on sustainability and efficiency, the choice of battery technology plays a crucial role. In this article, we explore the key differences and benefits of Lithium Batteries and Lead-Acid Batteries when powering electric construction machinery and access equipment, aiming to provide a balanced perspective.

Lithium batteries have a significantly higher energy density compared to lead-acid batteries, storing more energy in a smaller and lighter package. This allows for greater equipment efficiency and increased productivity. Their lightweight nature also contributes to improved manoeuvrability and ease of transportation on

construction sites. On the other hand, lead-acid batteries, though bulkier and heavier, have been a traditional choice for many applications. Their durability and reliability have made them suitable for certain construction scenarios, and their lower energy density can be advantageous in specific contexts.

Density and Weight:
Energy
18 Ballyvesey Plant News | Winter 23/24

Charging Efficiency and Downtime:

One of the standout advantages of lithium batteries is their superior charging efficiency. They have a higher charge acceptance rate, enabling faster charging times and the ability to handle partial charging without a “memory effect.”

This flexibility can significantly boost the productivity of electric construction machinery and access equipment. Lead-acid batteries, while requiring longer charging periods and having a slower and less efficient charging process, may be more suitable for applications where charging time is not a critical factor, and downtime can be planned effectively.

Cost and Maintenance:

Lithium batteries may have a higher initial cost, but their extended lifespan and reduced maintenance requirements contribute to a more favourable cost-benefit ratio over time. Lead-acid batteries, on the other hand, could be a more cost-effective solution initially, and their maintenance requirements are well understood, making them suitable for applications with budget constraints and specific operational needs.

Lifespan and Maintenance:

Lithium batteries generally have a longer lifespan compared to lead-acid batteries, enduring a higher number of charge-discharge cycles. With proper maintenance and regular charging habits, lithium batteries can provide reliable service for an extended period. Lead-acid batteries, while having a more limited lifespan, can still offer durability and reliability if properly maintained and used within their specified parameters.

Environmental Impact:

Lithium batteries are known for their environmentally friendly attributes, containing fewer toxic materials and having a lower overall impact on the environment compared to lead-acid batteries.

However, lead-acid batteries, if managed and disposed of properly, can be recycled, reducing their environmental impact. The choice between the two depends on the specific environmental goals and regulations in place.

Balancing Choices for a Sustainable Future:

As the construction industry moves towards sustainable practices, the choice between lithium bat-

teries and lead-acid batteries for electric-powered construction machinery and access equipment becomes increasingly important. While lithium batteries offer advantages in terms of energy density, charging efficiency, lifespan, and environmental impact, lead-acid batteries bring durability, reliability, and potentially lower initial costs to the table.

Construction companies and equipment manufacturers must carefully evaluate their specific needs, considering factors such as application requirements, budget constraints, and environmental considerations. The adoption of lithium or lead-acid battery technology should align with the goals of enhancing productivity, reducing downtime, and supporting a greener future for the construction industry.

By making informed choices today, construction professionals can revolutionize their operations, align with environmental goals, and build a sustainable future for the industry. Remember, the battery choice made today shapes the construction sites of tomorrow, influencing the trajectory of the industry towards greater efficiency, reduced environmental impact, and enhanced overall sustainability.

Italy has long since been associated with the production of high-quality demolition attachments with many of the manufacturers spending decades honing their skills.

In 1989 Salvatori Carpuso stared his company’s journey within the industry. Manufacturing spare parts and service kits, Salvatori’s company Promove found there was a niche in the market to move away from just service and maintenance of demolition attachments and machinery to the design and building of their own equipment. Hydraulic breakers were the first in

the constantly expanding product line which now boasts a range of crackers, selector grabs and concrete processors suitable for machines up to 80 tonnes in weight. Situated on the outskirts of Bari in Southern Italy, Promove have recently increased their capabilities with a two million Euro expansion of their manufacturing business to provide state-of-the-art machining facilities. “We have recently added new precision milling and CNC technology to assist our manufacturing teams.” Giuseppe Palma, European Sales Manager commented “The addition of this new machinery will allow our machinists

Designed in-house by the small but highly experienced team, Promove attachments are constructed to provide their owners and end users a lifetime of productivity and reliability. From the exceptionally sturdy frames and casings to the high-end motors and slew rings used in the rotating demolition attachments. Ease of maintenance is another area the company prides itself in. “We have looked at making the replacement of teeth and cutting edges as simple and easy as possible to avoid downtime.”

Giuseppe comments “Our breakers have a simple, yet effective valve system to adjust the impact and blow energy when working on different materials. Whilst some manufacturers offer an automatic system, we feel the manual system is less complicated, works just as well and offers superior reliability to the complex automatic systems.”

Whilst at the factory we were invited to see a project where one of Promove’s repeat customers were using a pair of the company’s

to complete work quicker and more accurately enabling us to produce more attachments.”

The company started life producing hydraulic breakers for home market focussing on build quality, reliability, and a first-class backup service. “We strive to give our dealers and customers the best service available.” Managing Director Paula Carpuso explains “Good service and back-up keeps the customer happy. We have every part for every attachment we manufacture on the shelf ready for shipment within 12 hours should a customer require it.”

xP7000 heavy duty hammers. Cementi Constantinopli started their operations around the same time as Promove and is owned by the Rabasco family. Operating three quarries across the Puglia region, Cementi Constantinopli employs over 400 people in both the extraction operations and production of cement and plaster products.

Their limestone quarrying operation at Minervino Murge relies on the Promove breakers to remove over 100,000 tonnes of material on an annual basis. Unlike many quarries where the material is blasted from the face, Cementi Constantinopli use the two xP7000 breaker mounted on 75 tonne class excavators to remove the material. Quarry Supervisor Romeo explained why; “We are unable to blast at the site because of planning permissions. This has meant that the only way to harvest the high-quality material at the site was to use breakers. We run a fleet of premium excavators and feel the quality of the Pro-

www.ballyvesey.com 21

The quarry employs a new CAT 374 and a 3-year-old CAT 374F to carry the breakers to steadily remove the face of limestone in front of them. Whilst the limestone itself is relatively hard, it runs through a mixture of clay and sand which is in thin bands around the limestone.

The two 75 tonne excavators work two areas at a time with each hammer adjusted for the material it is removing. The older machine works the material from the top of the bench which contains the softer material whilst the newer 374 removes the lower material at a lower level to create a bench for a new CAT 395 to load away. The breaker on the newer machine has been set to provide less blows per minute but hit harder thanks to a longer stroke. The faster, shorter blows from the other hammer are more than adequate to remove the lighter material higher up the face.

One noticeable thing about the

two breakers is the lack of paint on them. As the operators remove the material from the face, the limestone steadily builds um in front of the advancing excavator. To allow them to track forwards each operator uses the breaker’s body to level the material. Not the best way to treat an expensive attachment, but an effective method to say the least. What this unconventional use of the breaker does go to show is the solid build quality of the xP range’s casing.

Promove offer their breaker ranges with cartridge greasing options to prolong the life of the tool but the pair of hammers at the quarry used a dedicated grease line from the host excavator to constantly supply them with grease.

The market for breakers and demolition attachments is a hard fought one across the world, sadly with many end users making choices solely on the cost of a specific unit.

22 Ballyvesey Plant News | Winter 23/24

“We know we are not the cheapest.” Giuseppe comments “We design our tools to be able to give their owners a long life and also be extremely productive during that time.”

Whilst the company hold a massive stock of spares and wear parts, dealers around the word are also expected to carry a reasonable inventory of consumables. TDL Equipment, the dealer for the UK is one of those dealers. “We have only been selling the Promove range for a short period of time.” James Bickerton TDL’s Business Development Director commented “The UK is notorious for being a very cost sensitive market especially when it comes to certain attachments. We have found that the Promove range is proving to give users a combination of value for money associated with some of the lower cost brands whilst bringing the market leading performance and quality in the same package.”

As good as new: TDL extending machine life through refurbmishments.

In addition to replacing all key components, we also offer full machine refurbishments, including replacement of all pins and bushes, wheel & tyres, cosmetic panel work, air conditioning system, all interior cab parts plus so much more! All work is carried out at Tankersley’s workshop by our team of experienced engineers and all replacement parts come with at least 12 months warranty.

The photos shown are from a recently completed refurbishment on an Atlas 350MH for our good friend long-standing customer, Scrapco Recycling, who operate a fleet of Atlas material handlers and a Weycor wheel loader.

As a service department, we’re focused on offering a cheaper and affordable option to buying new equipment. I believe machine refurbishments are a cost-effective way of extending the working life of machines, by allowing customers to invest in a pre-planned rebuild programme at a convenient time. Replacing key components such as the engine, slew ring and hydraulic pump, contribute towards extending the life of an Atlas MH by at least 4 years/ 8,000 working hours.
