we may even add more. Treasurer Meghan Rohde and I will both be there, and we are happy to talk to you about the district and answer any questions you may have. Coffee Chats for the 2023-24 school year: • Sept. 12, 2023: 7:30 a.m., Java Bay • Nov. 2, 2023: 11:30 a.m., Bay Library • Jan. 19, 2024: 7:30 a.m., Mojo’s • Mar 20, 2024: 6 p.m., Board of Education • May 10, 2024: 10 a.m., Bay Provisions Q. Finally, we hear you and Leah found a house... congratulations! What do you like best about being a Villager? A. We did! We moved in before summer break, and the best part is, the house is within walking distance to my office, and I am getting in a lot of steps walking back and forth. We love the neighborhood, and we really enjoy being close to the lake. We’ve been exploring all the different walking paths throughout the city. Everyone has been very welcoming, and we love our adopted hometown. We are truly proud to be in Bay!

Over the summer, the district started the process for conducting a facilities audit as part of a complimentary service offered by the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCS). Once this assessment of our district’s facilities is complete, results will be shared publicly. Part of the district’s strategic plan and budget involves investing in buildings and grounds, and here are some of the capital improvement projects our facilities team and their vendors completed this summer: • Concrete curb repair at Bay High, Bay Middle and Westerly. • Upgrades and installations of additional security cameras at school buildings. • Repitching the roof over the Normandy Library to eliminate water issues. • Creation of a vestibule area at the Glenview Center. • Gym floor refinishing at Bay High and the Community Gym at Bay Middle. • LED lighting conversion continues at all district buildings. • Miscellaneous door replacements, tuckpointing and HVAC upgrades.

Q. Wow! It’s so hard to believe you’re already starting your second year with Bay Village Schools. How do you think this year will be different from last year? A. For the last 15 months, I’ve made it a point to get to know this community; from the faculty and staff, to Mayor Koomar and his team; from the students and their parents, to the residents; and of course, the Supt. Prebles and Bay High Key Club members work the Kiwanis curly fry booth at Bay Days. civic and spiritual leaders. I have listened and I have learned. Getting to know everyone a little better has truly helped me understand their wants and needs in a school Then our Board of Education went to work during Board work district, and the expectations they have, which align beautifully sessions to determine how to measure the success of the new with our new Strategic Plan. It has been a busy first year, but also Strategic Plan; each titled Indicators of Success. These indicators a very rewarding one, and I wouldn’t change one day. Girls lacrosse hit milestones, set records and made history, beating Rocky River in overtime to become Regional Champs and State Semifinalists. The lady Rockets eventually lost to Hathaway Brown, but celebrated their amazing ride. Teammates Riley LaVogue and Ellie Bennett were named All-Americans – a first for the BHS lacrosse program. Rocket baseball shut out Elyria Catholic to win a District final, and went to Regional play for the first time since 2010. Unfortunately, the team lost to Defiance to end the season, but celebrated teammate, Evan Bottone, who was selected First Team All State by the OHSBCA for Division II.

Throughout the entire ceremony there was a theme of connectivity that was not lost, and that is what makes Bay Village a special place, and one that we hope our graduates return to often as they take the next steps on their posthigh school journey. So, as our graduates go off to places like the University of Notre Dame, the Ohio State University and the Merchant Marine Academy, or stay in Northeast Ohio to join the trades or the workforce, let us remember the optimism, hope, direction and resilience that Supt. Prebles shared during his remarks, and let us always remember to Be Proud To Be Bay!

All Bay Village Schools students are assigned a Chromebook to be used as part of the district’s curriculum. By giving students access to modern technology, we hope to empower them to be better communicators, contributors and citizens, as aligned with our Strategic Plan. Parents and students sign a Chromebook Agreement in PowerSchool before a device is issued. Students use a Chromebook regularly as part of their teaching and learning, just like traditional school supplies. They are expected to practice good "Chromebook care" at all times and to bring a fully charged device to school each day.

Summer Programming Did you know that more than 1,000 Bay Village students – from summer enrichment and STEM Camp to Mini Cheer and Speed Camp – participated in academic and athletic programming this summer? Thank you to our educators and coaches for sharing your knowledge and time with our Little Rockets, Bees, Wolves and Rockets over summer break.

Alumni Awards The Bay Alumni Foundation announced its 2023 Bay High Distinguished Alumni and Distinguished Educator Hall of Fame class. Congratulations to the following honorees who will be officially introduced and inducted during Homecoming Weekend 2023: Tom Phillips ‘65, Distinguished Alumni; Rollie Krewson ‘70, Distinguished Alumni; Richard “Dick” Scott, Distinguished Educator; Ann Mowery, Distinguished Educator; Jim Durk ‘79, Distinguished Alumni; Curt Crews, Distinguished Educator; and Chuck Robertson, Distinguished Educator.

The district’s financial year ended on June 30, 2023. For the General Fund, things ended very closely to the expectations outlined in the May Five-Year Forecast. The district’s operating expenses were just over $39 million. The district brought in more than $39.9 million from local taxes, state funding and other revenues. Since the district was able to bring in more money than it spent this year, it will carry over almost $900,000 into its savings account for future expenses. The district was able to achieve this carryover because of the new tax levy passed in November. The district continues to spend within its operating budget and spend closely to the expectations outlined in the five-year forecasts. This is the first year the district is ending with a carryover after four years of deficit spending. This carryover will help build up cash on hand to help fund the district in the future when deficit spending occurs again at the end of the current levy cycle. The district is expected to carry over funds and build up its cash balance for the next several years. Prioritizing efficiency in operations and intentional spending in alignment with the strategic plan are ways the district plans to continue to spend below budget and increase the carryover of funds in the next several years. Thank you to the community for its continued support. Our district is extremely reliant on its residents for tax revenues as its main source of income. The district greatly appreciates the community and its residents. Please see Summer Facilities Update on back page

AS MEMBERS OF THE BAY VILLAGE BOARD OF EDUCATION, we had the honor and privilege of presenting our 190 graduates with diplomas during Bay High School’s 97th Annual Commencement Exercises at Bay High Memorial Stadium.

Our own Board Vice President Dr. Andrey Stojic, who presented his son Aidan with his diploma, talked about service, resilience and kindness, and shared a stanza from a poem by Douglas Malloch called Good Timber...

TREASURER UPDATE
