what to see in Benidorm We are going to begin our route at the square of Canalejas, next to the tourist office there is one of the most typical streets of the old town “el Carrer del Gats” (Cats Street) following the street up to the Iglesia de San Jaime (Church of Saint James) which dates from the 18th Century.

Continuing with our visit in the Old Town of Benidorm we will reach one of the most emblematic places of the town.

El Mirador del Castillo (the Castle View Point) the fortress which acted as a defence against the incersions of Algerian and Berber pirates in the 14th 15th and 16th centuries. The fortress was built on the great rock that divides the two beaches Playa del Mal Pas and Playa de Levante.

Later on the castle was abandoned and now only the remains of its walls are left lying on the rocks of the Mirador (Viewpoint) which is

also known as the Mediterranean Balcony.

After looking at the marvellous views offered here we go down the stone steps which take us to the Puerto de Benidorm. The small Playa del Mal Pas is next to the port.

The beach is protected by the castle cliffs and the port breakwater. All the nautical activities take place here and also the sea crossing across to the Isla de Benidorm.

The boat trip to the Isla de Benidorm is available every 60 minutes from the port. The cost is 14€ per adult and 11€ for a child, once the boat leaves the port you can enjoy the views of the coastline of Benidorm and the mountain scenery. On arrival at the island, admire the fish swimming around the sea bed vieed from the glass bottom of the boat.

The excursion is approximately 2 hours in duration with the option of staying longer.

when are shorts too short?

If you’ve got it, flaunt it, right? Well maybe not always...

Thumbs Up Summer is fast approaching, we’re currently at a daily average of 30ºC here in Spain and as the springwear is being flung to the back of the wardrobe, summer attire is a necessity.

As ever, every girl’s staple summer piece is a pair of denim shorts. High-waisted, patterned, vintage and distressed are just a few of the styles out there. This year, however, “short shorts” are the ones I’m seeing the most of.

“Short shorts” are basically hot pants made acceptable as day-wear because somebody cleverly named them “shorts”. These kind of shorts don’t stand out as being quite so short during the winter (or all year round in the UK) because they are worn with tights, usually thick and black. However, during the summer or when on holiday, legs, and the rest, are on full display with no tights to shield modesty.

Every other teenager owns a pair of shorts shorter, I’m sure, than their parents would like. Yes, celebrities wear them and yes, all major retailers are selling them but does that make them okay for the everyday high street customer? Where do we draw the line between fashion and indecency? Clothes shouldn’t matter and how much respect you’re given shouldn’t depend on how much, or how little, flesh is on show... but it does.

It is difficult to take someone seriously when parts of their body are in full view to anyone and everyone.

Let’s be honest, how many people actually look like Rihanna or Miley Cyrus? Especially if they’re on the beach, a bit burnt or worse have cellulite and that does tend to happen to us brits. Better to look gorgeous in some pretty longer shorts rather than mediocre or too short butt huggers.? Save the hot pant shorts for clubbing/on the beach and try wearing actual clothes during the daytime.

8 Telling Signs your shorts are too short...

1. There is a visible crease where your legs stop and your bum begins.

2. You can feel a cool breeze on your buttocks.

3. Your shorts appear non-existent if worn with anything longer than a crop top.

4. People frequently say to you, “gosh, your shorts are quite short”.

5. Your knickers show underneath your shorts hem.

6. You constantly find yourself pulling your shorts down from the bottom.

7. When you sit down, it looks as if you forgot the bottom half of your outfit.

8. Your Dad refuses to leave the house with you unless you put on something a little more “respectable”.

Verano se acerca rápidamente, estamos actualmente a un promedio diario de 30 (grados) C aquí en España y como la ropa de primavera esta a punto de ser arrojada a la parte trasera del armario,la ropa de verano es una necesidad.

Como siempre, la prenda típica de todas las chicas en verano es un par de pantalones cortos.

Talle alto, modelado, y vintage son solo algunos de los estilos por ahí. Este año, sin embargo, “short shorts” son los que estoy viendo al máximo.

“Short shorts” son básicamente “Hot pants”(pantalones calientes) aceptables para llevar a diario porque alguien inteligentemente les cambio el nombre. Este tipo de pantalones cortos no destacan por ser tan cortos durante el invierno (o todo el año en el Reino Unido), porque se llevan con medias, generalmente gruesas y negras. Sin embargo, durante el verano o en vacaciones, las piernas y el resto,se ven a pantalla completa sin medias para

proteger la modestia.

Todos los adolescentes poseen un par de pantalones cortos, que a sus padres le parecen demasiado cortos, Sí, los famosos los usan y sí, todos los distribuidores principales los venden, pero ¿Estan bien para llevar todos los días? ¿Dónde trazamos la línea entre la moda y la indecencia? No debería importar la ropa, y la cantidad de respeto que nos dan no debería de depender de cuánta carne mostramos... pero si importa. Es difícil que te tomen en serio cuando ciertas partes de tu cuerpo estan la vista de todos.

Seamos sinceros, ¿cuántas personas realmente lucen como Rihanna o Miley Cyrus?

Especialmente si vienes de la playa, un poco quemada o peor tienes celulitis, y eso nos tiende a pasar a las británicas. ¿No te ves mejor con pantalones bonitos un poco más largos antes que unos demasiado cortos? Guarda las pantalones cortos estilo “hot pants” para la fiesta/playa y trata de usar ropa real durante el día!

8 Pautas para saber que tus “shorts” son demasiado cortos...

1. Hay un pliegue visible donde termina tu pierna y empieza tu culo.

2. Puedes sentir una brisa fresca en las nalgas.

3. Los “shorts” parecen inexistentes si lo llevas con algo más largo que un top.

4. La gente dice, “Dios mío, son muy cortos”.

5. Sus bragas se ven debajo de su pantalones cortos.

6. Te encuentras costantemente tirando de tus pantalones cortos.

7. Cuando te sientas, parece como si se te ha olvidado la mitad de tu ropa.

8. Tu padre se niega a salir de casa contigo a menos que te pongas algo un poco más “respetable”.

Roland Garros Sunday May 21 Sunday June 9 The French Open (known also as the Tournoi de Roland-Garros) is one of the four Grand Slam Tennis events. A French tournament has been held since 1891 for men and 1897 for women, though up until 1925 entry to the event was restricted to members of French clubs. The tournament became an Open Championship in 1968, though it was closed to contract professionals in 1972.

The defending champion is very much the favourite to retain her title this year.

In the unlikely event that any of her legion of fans may not already be aware, Maria Sharapova is now officially on Twitter (@MariaSharapova).

Though the Russian has quite a reputation for being outspoken, there is no risk of her committing any unforced errors on the famous social network site that has already seen the downfall of quite a few high-profile names.

Since joining Twitter earlier this year, Maria has played it safe, posting a few photos from autograph sessions, sponsor events and the odd training session.

On 5 April however, she chose to wax lyrical about the city of Paris. “I’ve got goose bumps,” she said. “I can’t wait to come back.”

Regardless of whether you are a fan of Sharapova’s, you certainly cannot accuse her of indulging in marketing-speak on this occasion – Maria loves Paris and she loves Roland Garros! And with good reason – it was here that last year,

she reached her Holy Grail, at the tenth attempt. That moment, as she fell to her knees in her black dress, arms outstretched towards the sky, savouring the match point that she had just converted against Sara Errani, was a defining one in an already storied career.

That moment, on 9 June 2012, saw her finally win the one Grand Slam title which had eluded her to date. “It’s special, in fact it’s more than that,” she said at the time. “It’s undefinable. It was a long journey to get this far. And the journey’s not over yet.”

12 months on, the former self-styled “cow on ice” when it comes to playing on clay is very much the favourite to conserve her title, with her first foray onto the red stuff this year seeing her win the 29th tournament of her career indoors in Stuttgart. Of course, the world No.2 will have to hold off the world No.1, Serena Williams, and the No.3, Victoria Azarenka, as well as the likes of Agnieszka Radwanska, Li Na, Angelique Kerber, an Italian or two and plenty more besides…

But Sharapova is the one they will all have to beat. “I had a few tough matches in Stuttgart,” she said, “but it was obviously great to start the clay season off with a win. There’s still plenty of room for progress and I’m looking to Madrid and Rome to help me round into form in time for Roland Garros.”

Film reviews On a glance down the cast list (Hugh Laurie, Catherine Keener, Alison Janney, Oliver Platt) expectations of this film are pretty high, however it really fails to deliver due to a weak script. A middle-aged father becomes the lover of the 24-year-old daughter of the couple across the road.

There’s plenty of potential for jagged black humour in this suburban comedy-drama, but the filmmakers never take a single risk. 

Pitch Perfect

This film had every chance to be cheesy and over the top but was actually very witty and clever.

Lead, Anna Kendrick, is cajoled into joining one of the acapella groups ‘The Bellas’ at her University, injecting some much needed energy into their repertoire. Rebel Wilson also stars in this comedy and the acting is superb. Expect it to become a much-loved classic in the vain of Mean Girls. 

Life of Pi

En un vistazo a el reparto (Hugh Laurie, Catherine Keener, Alison Janney, Oliver Platt) las expectativas de esta película son bastante altas, sin embargo no es el caso, debido a un guión débil. Un padre de mediana edad se convierte en la amante de la hija de 24 años de la pareja que vive en frente. Esta película tenía todas las posibilidades a ser cursi, pero fue muy ingenioso e inteligente. Chocolate Cocktails Chilli-spiced hot chocolate Ingredients: 250ml milk (or you could use almond milk) Tiny pinch of chilli flakes 2 cloves ½ cinnamon stick 3cm vanilla pod, seeds scraped out 2 tsp sugar 2 tsp cocoa 1 tbsp single cream 25ml Sailor Jerry spiced rum Method: Infuse the milk, chilli, cloves, cinnamon and vanilla seeds together in a pan over a low heat.

Separately, whisk the sugar, cocoa and a little cold milk together to form a paste, then add to the pan and whisk together.

Add the cream, warm gently and finally add the spiced rum. Strain into cups to serve.

Chocolate hard shake Ingredients: 3 scoops good-quality chocolate ice cream 100ml ice cold milk 1 tsp smooth peanut butter (optional) 40ml dark rum (you can leave out the rum for a non-alcoholic version) Method: Blitz the ice cream, milk and peanut butter, if using, together. Pour in the rum and stir to combine.

Pour into tall glasses and serve. If you really wanted you could garnish with chocolate sprinkles or crumbled flake.

Amigo 24 – an integral part of the Benidorm series!

Filming of the ITV hit comedy series “Benidorm” is in full swing at the resort and the most important prop in the series has to be Madge´s mobility scooter – which is provided by Amigo

24! Owner Mario told me

that orders have increased dramatically, as they do with every series. “Everyone wants to be just like Madge and they come in asking for a Madge special”.

I bet that Derren Litten, the writer and creator had no idea of the virtual hysteria he´d cause when he decided that Madge would more or less be permanently seated on her scooter - not due to any disability mind except idleness. Ever since that first series was aired back in 2007, the streets of Benidorm have been awash with them.

The day before, the crew pre-recorded a clip showing presenters Alison Hammond, Matt Johnson and Johnny Robinson having a mobility scooter race along the Levante seafront... believe it or not, this actually goes on in true life every day here!

They have undoubtedly become a must have accessory in the resort - and not only by the traditional blue rinse brigade as you would expect! For some elderly an electric scooter is an essential item as it enables them to get out. With prices under 50 euros per week its hardly surprising really - in fact I am sorely tempted myself, especially as it can sometimes take 15 minutes to find a parking space in the centre of Benidorm and then I have to buy a pay and display ticket or risk getting a 90 euro fine! You can leave the scooters anywhere and not worry at all. However, walk along the promenade and you have to have your wits about you - I bet that you won´t walk more then a hundred metres before you hear the whizzing of a scooter coming up behind you!

Para algunas personas mayores un scooter eléctrico es un elemento esencial ya que les da mucha más movilidad.

Con precios menores a 50 euros por semana no es sorprendente de hecho estoy muy tentado, especialmente porqué a veces puedes tardar 15 minutos para encontrar un aparcamiento en el centro de Benidorm y entonces tengo que comprar un ticket y mostrarlo o correr el riesgo de recibir una multa de 90€!

Puedes dejar los scooters en cualquier lugar y no preocuparse en absoluto. Sin embargo, caminar por el paseo marítimo conlleva su peligro - apuesto a que no llegas un centenar de metros antes de escuchar a un scooter zumbando detrás de ti!

El elenco y el equipo estarán grabando en la localidad hasta finales de junio, así que quién sabe, quizá te tropieces con uno de ellos mientras estas aquí!

Raramente se ha abierto un nuevo restaurante con tan buenas críticas de todos los que han comido allí. Pero puedo decir sinceramente que en este caso el recién inaugurado Curry Mile en Benidorm merece cada halago que le han dado.

El propietario Ronnie y su equipo tienen como objetivo personal proporcionarle no sólo una excelente experiencia gastronómica, sino un alto nivel de servicio al cliente también. Desde el primer día de la apertura los clientes han elogiado el gusto y el estándar de los alimentos, las crujientes papadums se funden en la boca, y los platos especiales de la casa: Balti Masala, Rogan Josh y pollo de mantequilla (Butter chicken) están buenísimas!!

Curry Mile tiene dos menús, de 9.95€ y 14,50€ pero me decidí a comer de el menú “a la carta”. Realmente disfrutamos de los chutneys, chiles de cilantro, mango y otras salsas con nuestros papadums antes de compartir

un plato mixto con gambas, coliflor, pollo y pescado Pakora (mi favorito). Era delicioso.

Tenía como plato principal Cordero Tikka Masala, que se derretía en la boca, mientras que mi amigo tenía un pollo mantequilla delicioso.

Los platos acompañantes son más imaginativos que el arroz pilau estándar y no podía criticar el pan naan. También tienen una gran selección vegetariana para los no carnívoros de la familia. La comida sin duda cumplió con las expectativas!

No sólo fue excepcional la comida, también son más que razonables los precios, incluyendo las bebidas. Sin duda volveremos a probar más del menú y recomiendo a cualquier persona que le guste el curry ir a comer allí. No se arrepentirá!

Some of you may remember the “Noah´s Ark” Animal Sanctuary that was in Benimantell and was for years a popular “blanket Trip” destination until its forced closure by the Spanish government in 2008.

Recently an article in a local newspaper caught my eye; of an Animal Sanctuary needing donations to ensure its future and the care of the animals.

When I saw the plea, I got straight on the phone to FIPARM (the international foundation for the protection of animals) and later that day visited the sanctuary to discuss how we could help.

These are not animals that were bred in captivity. These are animals with a story. Thankfully many of the animals that were kept at the old Noah´s Ark have been moved to the new one and we can not only visit them but help them too!

I have agreed with the foundation an exclusive trip that we will run “free of charge” as a “blanket trip” but we ask that passengers make a donation to the sanctuary that will go to help re-home, rehabilitate and care for these needy animals and for the British Tourist, what a great way to

spend a day out?”

There are Lions & Tigers, Monkeys & Baboons, exotic birds, snakes, lizards and even rabbits that have been saved from illegal trade, torture, scientific experiments and for most destruction.

michael Buble - To Be Loved It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly four years since Michael Buble released his fourth album ‘Crazy Love’ as it seems as though he’s never been away.

Buble’s fifth record really is a great collection of instant classics, which shows that he really is more than capable of releasing some great original material, most notably with ‘After All,’ his collaboration with fellow Canadian, Bryan Adams, and the beautiful ballad ‘Close Your Eyes’.

Of course, a Michael Buble album isn’t truly a Buble album if it didn’t mainly consist of covers but with his undeniably smooth vocals, he really makes classics

such as the Jackson 5’s ‘Who’s Loving You’ his own.

Possibly the highlight of the album comes at the end of the record with Buble’s take on Frank Sinatra’s ‘Young At Heart.’ Frank Sinatra he may not be, but among the list of hundreds of artists who have tried to take on Frank and failed, Buble comes out on top showing he is the closest thing to a modern day member of the rat pack that there is to offer right now and for that he should be praised.

KEEP YOUR DOG HEALTHY AND HAPPY GROOM REGULARLY! Grooming your puppy/dog All dogs will benefit from regular grooming, whether it is a short haired breed or one with a long or fluffy coat.

Reasons for grooming – Remember ‘CHAIR’ Cleanliness – keeping your dog’s coat clean by removing dirt and dead hair helps encourage new hair growth and reduces the amount of hair deposited on household furniture Health – grooming helps to stimulate new coat growth and prevents the formation of knots which may lead to skin irritation Appearance – most owners take a pride in their dogs looking smart, and regular grooming will certainly help your dog to look his best Inspection – regular grooming is also a great way to check for parasites or any suspicious lumps and bumps Relationship – grooming is part of dog’s socialisation activities. Regular grooming helps create a bond between you and your dog, and acustoms the dog to being handled.

Getting started It is important to groom your dog at a height which is comfortable for both you and your dog and for many dogs it may be advisable to groom your dog on a table. There are custom made grooming tables available, which might be a good investment if you have taken on a dog that needs a lot of grooming. But any sturdy table or work bench with a non-slip surface will suffice. Remember: never leave your dog unattended on the table even for the shortest moment.

Start the grooming experience at an early age as part of your puppy’s socialisation programme and routines.

Keep the sessions short to start off with – just a couple of minutes, gradually increasing the time spent on the table.

Always make the experience positive, rewarding with praise and treats. Any struggling should be dealt with firmly but kindly as your puppy may be frustrated, mischievous or even afraid.

Build up the experience and your puppy will come to accept his grooming routine and also being handled on the table, which will help for other activities such as veterinary visits.

Finish the grooming routine before he gets bored or tired, so that each session ends on a positive note.

Dog coat types. It’s worth bearing in mind that factors like neutering, age, poor diet and poor health can dramatically influence your dog’s coat.

Knots and matts A knot occurs where the coat is slightly tangled but it can be removed by careful brushing or combing out.

Matts are formed when dead, loose undercoat hair becomes trapped by the top or guard hair, and starts to clump and twist together. If this matted coat becomes wet, the matting tightens and becomes almost solid.

Do not attempt to remove matts unless trained in the procedure. Otherwise, refer to a professional groomer.

Care of ears, nails and eyes • Check the dog’s ears to see if they are clean. You can remove excess dirt from the inside of the ear flap with damp cotton wool. Never probe inside the ear as you may perforate the ear drum.

Any odour is usually a sign there is something wrong and the dog should be taken to a vet.

• If nails are excessively long remove the tip of the claw, taking care not to cut the quick or blood vessel.

• If needed clean the eyes with clean, damp cotton wool using a separate piece for each eye.

External Parasites A parasite is something that lives on another animal (the host) and gets its nourishment from the host. If left unchecked, the parasite causes disease or even death. The most common external parasites found on dogs are fleas and ticks.

• Fleas are very small, brownish black, extremely agile creatures. Excessive scratching and self-biting can be symptoms of flea infestation. Even if no fleas are to be seen the presence of shiny black specks like coal dust (flea excreta) is a sure indication of the presence of fleas (dab the specks with a damp piece of cotton wool and if it goes pink it confirms the presence of fleas; these are the remains of a digested blood meal from the host).

• Ticks are largish grey pea shaped parasites that can be 3 to 4mm in length. They attach themselves to other animals in order to have a blood meal.

There is evidence that ticks are also a threat to human health as they can spread Lyme disease.

There is now a wide range of proprietary powders, sprays, ‘spot-on’ treatments and anti-flea and tick collars available. A dedicated pet care professional will be happy to advise on suitable products.

Other skin problems Ringworm Ringworm is a fungal disease, affecting the skin, nails and hair.

Circular lesions appear causing hair loss, which become scaly and crusty.

Ringworm is contagious and is a zoonotic condition (transmissible to humans).
