Demand for Hereford Bulls Could Double

Hereford has the potential to capture the bull buying interest or market demand of one out of every four commercial cow-calf producers in the country during the next three years.

The research results in this article should stimulate a level of excitement in Hereford breeders that has been decades in the making. A recent survey conducted by Drovers and Vance Publishing Research Services indicates that the market share, or at least the market demand, for Hereford bulls being sold to commercial producers could almost double in the next three years. This winter and spring bull sale season reflected a very dynamic demand shift in the Hereford breed that’s been on the upswing for the past three to five years, supporting what this most recent study shows. Between 2001 and 2005, the average market share for the Hereford breed was approximately 15.5%. Or just more than 15 out of 100 producers were interested in purchasing a Hereford bull — as reported by Vance Research Group. Today 24% of producers indicated that they are interested in purchasing a Hereford bull in the next three years. Hereford has the potential to capture the bull buying interest or market demand of one out of every four commercial cow-calf producers in the country during the next three years. Market share will only reach this level if Hereford breeders are able to produce the number of acceptable quality, performance recorded, registered Hereford bulls to meet the market demand that’s present. If the demand cannot be met, then

4 Hereford World / May / June 2010

another product or breed will capture that market share. It’s simple supply and demand economics. Vance Research Services surveyed 22,000 cow-calf operators who are Drovers Alert E-news subscribers. More than 880 producers representing 45 states responded, a 4% return rate and a statistically significant sampling for such a large and diverse group. Several demographic questions were asked — cow herd size, cow herd genetic make up, breed of bull preferences, and important trait selection preferences. Watch for more about the survey in future Hereford World issues and at Hereford.org. The most telling change between the last survey conducted in 2005 and this most recent survey was the heightened interest in the Hereford breed. The Angus breed maintains the dominant market demand presence, capturing 67% of the producers surveyed. However, it appears that the Angus breed may have peaked in growth and flattened in demand over the course of the past five years. All other breeds, for the most part, have also maintained flat demand, while Hereford was the only breed reporting a significant upswing in demand. Surveyed producers listed, in order, 1) disposition, 2) calving ease, 3) fertility tested, and 4) breeder reputation as the top four traits they were most interested in when making bull buying decisions. This trend bodes well for

the Hereford breed that has proven to consistently deliver on all four of these top traits of interest and also have the bonus of delivering heterosis that can be added to the predominantly (73%) Angus-influenced cow herd. The economic impact of such a demand shift will be dynamic. In 2009 the AHA registered 23,566 bull calves. There were a total of 46,809 total male calves recorded through Whole Herd Total Performance Records (TPR) and the registry system of which 7,100 were steer calves and the balance (23,243) unregistered bull calves. A market demand going from 15.5% to 24% could potentially double the demand for performancetested registered Hereford bulls. Meeting that demand and supplying that need is what will ultimately determine the future of Hereford’s market share. That type of demand will obviously have to be met with caution, as the temptation to keep inferior intact males in production becomes more prevalent. This is a challenge the Hereford breed has been working toward for years. Maintaining this kind of perception will be the ultimate challenge. Remember, breeder reputation and integrity is one of the most important considerations to commercial producers. Sustaining a progressive, quality image will be all Hereford breeders’ responsibility if we wish to enjoy growing demand for Hereford range bulls. HW www.hereford.org

Evaluating the Top 20 Hereford Sires by Registration

Jack Ward

Since I joined the American Hereford Association (AHA) staff, I take time annually to review the breed’s genetic change and the list of sires by registration numbers. The 2009 top 20 sire list by registration is really interesting to look through. Here are some facts about those top 20 bulls: 1) Six of the top seven bulls are leased by an artificial insemination (AI) company, and the average price per straw of semen on those six bulls is $19. 2) Ten of the bulls were part of the National Reference Sire Program (NRSP). 3) The average of the expected progeny differences (EPDs) would put this set of bulls in at least the top 25% of the breed, and each has a profit index value in the top 20%. Specifically, this set of bulls would be in the top 25% of the breed for calving-ease direct, top 15% for scrotal, top 20% for ribeye area and top 10% for marbling.

BIF convention planned The 2010 Beef Improvement Federation’s (BIF) annual conference will be June 28-July 1 at the Holiday Inn Select Executive Conference Center in Columbia, Mo. Visit the BIF Web site, www.BIF2010.com, to find registration and schedule information. Attending the BIF conference is a great way to stay current on what is happening in the areas of research in the beef industry. HW

6 Hereford World / May / June 2010

4) The average number of progeny registered to these bulls is nearly 170 head. Remember that a calf crop is usually not complete for about two years. 5) All of these bulls have been advertised in at least one Hereford World AI Book, and in all but one case, they have been advertised multiple times. 6) The average age of these top 20 bulls is six-and-ahalf years. These are certainly interesting facts, and they show that AHA members have taken on the challenge of moving this breed in the right direction by implementing a sound breeding program. Most importantly, the bulls on this list are good bulls with proven pedigrees that have EPDs on the right side of breed average and can have a long-term positive effect on the breed. Just as important, this list proves that getting a sire used within the breed is a process. The process starts by using the right genetics that are demanded by breeders. Second, the bull must have some proof, and the method of choice is to get a bull proven in the AHA NRSP. After all this is complete, the bull must be recognized and this recognition can be

accomplished with a good advertising program. In addition, breeders will use bulls with moderately priced semen.

Research foundation Last fall the AHA Board of Directors, along with the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA) board, formed a research foundation committee that is intended to raise funds to help support special research projects. As Hereford demand continues to increase we will continue to be challenged to produce a product that is useful to the commercial industry. With this in mind, special projects will be designed to quantify the value of Hereford genetics in the beef industry. The groundwork has been laid to begin to collect as many phenotypes on traits of economic relevance, and the extra funds will be used to work in these areas of research to incorporate them into our strong genetic analysis. There will be some special fund-raisers in the near future for the foundation. If you have ideas for research projects or fund-raising projects, call me at 816-842-3757 or e-mail jward@hereford.org and share your ideas. HW

AHA election process

Each year three American Hereford Association (AHA) Directors retire from the Board and three new Directors are elected to succeed them. The election procedure is a multi-step process. 1) Nomination of board candidates – The AHA Board of Directors executive committee selects a five-member nominating committee at-large to nominate a slate of six Director candidates. 2) Election of voting delegates – Each state elects voting delegates to attend the AHA Annual Meeting in Kansas City to vote on the slate of nominees. Each state is entitled to one delegate for every 750 Hereford registrations recorded from June 1-May 31. A state must have a minimum of 375 registrations to be entitled to one delegate. If the number of registrations exceeds 750 or any multiple thereof by 375 or more, the state will be entitled to an additional delegate or delegates. 3) State election of voting delegates – In late April, delegate nomination postcards are mailed to all AHA members. Replies must be postmarked by May 31. Each active member is asked to nominate one state candidate to be elected to serve as a delegate to the AHA Annual Meeting. An active member is defined as a member

Each active member will vote for the entitled number of state delegates. Each state is entitled to a number of delegates based on registration count and membership count in the previous year’s registration period. A minimum of 375 registration is required for the first delegate and then for every 750 registrations thereafter an additional delegate is added. In addition, each state is allocated a delegate for the first 25 members and an additional delegate for every 100 members there after.

• Tremendous overall dimension in this top-notch herd bull prospect. 9016 is a long spined, deep-sided bull with plenty of frame and style. He displays tremendous individual performance and weighed an impressive 1,400 lb. on Jan. 1, 2010. His dam is one of our very best cows and his grandam is the great 0023K cow that we recently purchased back from the Schock Ranch Sale, where she was the high selling cow.

Hereford Women Prepare for JNHE With preparations on the fast track for the Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE), members of the National Hereford Women (NHW) are excited to experience our inaugural activity as a new consolidated organization. The scholarships and contests sponsored by NHW are detailed on the JrHereford.org Web site, and details were distributed to junior members in the Advantage newsletter in early April. NHW encourages youth to be aware of deadline dates for each activity. These activities and events add another dimension to the JNHE and create opportunities for individuals, families and state

organizations to compete in a wholesome environment. The NHW membership meeting will be at 7:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 6. This meeting is a chance to meet NHW board members, hear JNHE updates, meet queen contestants, and be informed about NHW activities through committee reports and updates. The membership committee will be available to accept dues. The dues are $20 per year or $400 for a lifetime membership. The Ways and Means booth will be open during the JNHE and will have a special table set up at the breakfast meeting. The board is initiating a new

tool to keep members “in the loop” — an NHW handbook. It will be ready for distribution at the membership meeting. A breakfast registration form is available in the NHW newsletter and the JNHE entry packet or at www.barnaisle.blogspot.com. Circle the date on your calendar, mail your registration (deadline June 22), and plan to enjoy an early morning social with other NHW colleagues at “Home Again in 2010.” For more information on the breakfast, contact Mary Ann Berg at maryannberg2003@yahoo.com or 330-466-2640. From the outside you couldn’t draw a better individual than 955W. He has breed changing muscle definition. His head and neck sit high on top of his shoulders, he is big topped and he has incredible rib and capacity. This bull is very athletic and always carries his head up with a lot of arrogance. From the inside, 955W scored a perfect 10 on the Igenity tenderness test and scanned the third largest ribeye in the Cooper offering. He has a great head and eye set with 100 percent pigment, well shaped red testicles, and he is clean sheathed. His mother is a VERY fault free and functional cow. She has a great udder due to its tight suspension and short teat size. Rarely will you ever find a bull that can put so many big and little things together. You will see him again.

role with the cow herd during Bob’s career. She assisted with everything from calving to artificial insemination (AI). Today, Bob says, he enjoys the opportunity retirement has given him to be a full-time Hereford breeder and travel to shows and sales.

Why Hereford

Pennsylvania Hereford youth traveling to the 2009 Junior National Hereford Expo in Tulsa, Okla., stopped at the Thompsons allowing the kids and cattle to rest after their long drive.

Herefords Kids Missouri Hereford breeders Bob and Gretchen Thompson are passionate about Hereford cattle and Hereford youth. by Angie Stump Denton

N

estled in the Ozark hills near Rolla, Mo., Glengrove Farm has been home to performance-tested Herefords for 35 years. Bob Thompson is the third generation to farm the land, which was purchased by his grandfather in 1903. From 1926 to 1965, Glengrove was a registered Jersey dairy farm. In 1973 Bob and his wife, Gretchen, purchased their first Herefords, and the whiteface breed has grazed the Glengrove pastures ever since. Through the years, the couple has worked together, managing

Gretchen says while honeymooning in Colorado they first discussed getting into the cattle business. She recalls their discussion about the breed of cattle they’d purchase. “We both said Herefords. I liked their disposition and Bob had done research on the genetics and thought they were the breed of choice,” she says. The couple purchased their first two bred heifers from Bob’s uncle, Harold Berwick. The original Glengrove breeding program was based on Victor Domino genetics. Bob says the herd today still has that influence because of the bloodline’s ability to shed off and deal with the heat. “Victor Dominos are the optimum size cattle for our environment,” he says. “We do try diverse genetics to attract different clientele. I’m not reluctant to add new genetics through the purchase of females or bulls that will work in our program or through AI sire selection.” Today the Glengrove herd numbers about 40 cows, including 20 spring-calving cows and 20 fallcalving cows.

and building their herd. Bob was in the banking industry for 37 years; he retired after serving 25 years as president of U.S. Bank in Rolla. Gretchen says she enjoyed the opportunity to play an important

Bob says their breeding program is based on selecting for balanced expected progeny differences (EPDs) and producing cattle that work in their environment. They want females that will produce 40-50% of their body weight without a lot of supplementation. “Bob is very knowledgeable about genetics and studies the data to make breeding decisions,” Gretchen says. “Because of his dairy background, he also focuses on udder quality and soundness.” www.hereford.org

Prior to weaning, Glengrove bulls are creep fed and then after weaning are placed on a feed test that qualifies through the University of Missouri (MU) as a 140-day performance test. The bulls are fed to gain 3 to 3.5 lb. per day. “We do not try to maximize growth,” Bob says. “We strive to develop bulls that are sound and useful for their new owners.” Fellow Missouri Hereford breeder Marty Lueck says, “Bob is really focused on producing functional cattle that work for their customers.” Bob and Gretchen, through the years, have adopted technologies to optimize their breeding program. The couple started performance testing through MU in 1975. Today they continue to monitor performance for all traits included in the American Hereford Association Whole Herd Total Performance Records (TPR™) program. They also use embryo transfer and ultrasound technology and, most recently, started collecting residual feed intake (RFI) data. “For years and years the trend has been to maximize outputs,” Bob says. “The efficiency work being done today with residual feed intake is the first attempt at addressing the cost of inputs. The GrowSafe technology allows producers to measure the amount of feed consumed and amount of gain. Hopefully this will allow us to identify cattle that are efficient at gaining weight.

The Thompsons performance test 10-12 bulls each year, focusing, not on maximizing growth, but developing bulls that are sound and useful for their new owners.

“This technology could have huge implications at addressing the cost of production. We’ve had both bulls and heifers on test at MU to help us identify bloodlines that are the most efficient.”

Marketing strategy The Glengrove marketing program includes an annual production sale, the Show Me Polled Hereford Classic, which is hosted with three other Hereford breeders in Sedalia each November. The couple also consigns to the Missouri Opportunity Sale and the Central Missouri Polled Hereford Association Sale. The couple sells a few calves as projects to youth each year.

“We take great satisfaction in seeing juniors show cattle, learn life lessons and develop into responsible adults,” the couple says. They also market 10-12 performance-tested bulls privately off the farm as well as consign to the Southeast Missouri PerformanceTested Bull Sale in Farmington. Bob says Herefords topped the Farmington sale this spring. Bob and Gretchen consigned the highselling Hereford bull, which sold for $2,950.

Hereford success Bob says that in recent years it is exciting to see the Hereford breed have an increased level of continued on page 30...

acceptance by the commercial cattleman and gain prominence in the beef industry, especially because of the baldie. “The Association and breeders are on target promoting heterosis and crossbreeding programs,” Bob says. “Hereford is going to be a predominant player in the future of the beef industry. “I’ve talked to numerous commercial producers during the last year who have asked about Hereford genetics and say they plan to use Hereford bulls now or in the immediate future,” Bob explains. “I think this increased demand is due to the marketing done to promote that message about the value of heterosis and how it adds pounds of performance when you use Hereford bulls on Angus-based cows. “Cattlemen are beginning to realize the black baldie cow makes a fantastic mother cow and black baldie calves give a commercial breeder lots of flexibility to sell at weaning or to retain ownership. There are so many options for baldies to produce profit for commercial producers.”

Helping youth Both Bob and Gretchen have served on the Missouri Hereford

Association (MHA) board, and Bob was the group’s president. The couple was recognized as the 2002 MHA Purebred Breeder of the Year and has been recognized by the Missouri Junior Hereford Association. Marty says through the years Bob and Gretchen graciously have given of their time and money to support Hereford youth. “Although Bob and Gretchen do not have any kids of their own, they have numerous ‘adopted’ Hereford kids, who they have helped and cheered on for numerous years,” he says. Gretchen says they enjoy attending the junior nationals each year and watching Hereford youth excel at the event. “It’s amazing how the kids get along so well with one another. They have learned personal skills and how to respect each other.” The Thompsons also open their home and farm to Hereford youth traveling to junior nationals. This past year Hereford youth from Pennsylvania stopped over on their way to Tulsa. “There’s nothing better than kids and calves,” Bob says. “When showing cattle, youth learn responsibility, how to care for animals and learn the consequences if they do not. They

also learn about winning and losing as well as the basics of bookkeeping and financing.” Bob says he believes youth who are involved in programs such as the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) have a leg up in college and when they to go out into the real world. “Gretchen and I believe the Hereford breed is going to continue to increase in popularity, but to continue that growth, we are going to need good young people who will provide the leadership to keep the breed growing,” Bob says. Because of this passion, the couple has bequested a portion of their estate to the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA). “When you start to think about how you might like your estate distributed, you consider organizations that you are passionate about,” Bob says. “We love Hereford cattle and Hereford people, so the decision to bequest a portion of our estate to Hereford youth was an easy decision. We want to help with the process of developing leadership among Hereford youth to keep the breed growing in the years to come.” Bob says it is very important to do estate planning. “We all put it off and plan to do it someday,” Bob says. “There is a great deal of satisfaction when the process is complete and you have determined how your estate will be distributed — knowing that state and federal laws will not dictate how it is distributed. “The process is easier on heirs and family if you have a plan established. The bottom line with estate planning is that you know it is distributed the way you want it to be instead of the government making the decision for you.” HW Editor’s note: For more information on estate planning, contact your attorney or search estate planning on the Internet. ore than 700 Hereford youth and their families are expected to exhibit more than 1,200 head of Hereford cattle in Indianapolis July 4-10, 2010, at the Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE). While leadership and personal development competitions and the cattle shows will set a fast pace for the week, families looking to carve out a little time for sightseeing will find several family-friendly attractions in Indy. Established in 1821, Indiana’s capital city is home to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which hosts the two largest single-day sporting events in the world: the Indianapolis 500 each May and the

F rom the F ield In Passing Alice L. Roberts, 79, passed away Jan. 24 at her home in West Chicago, Ill., after a 20-year Alice Roberts struggle with lupus. A native of Winston-Salem, N.C., and the second-to-youngest of a family of nine children, she moved from her southern home to Tecumseh, Neb., in 1955 and lived her entire life on the family farm with her husband, Lyle, until their health and age required them to move near their daughter in the Chicago area in 2005. Alice married Lyle on Jan. 29, 1953, in Winston-Salem, N.C., where she was working at the time for the North Carolina Hereford Association. In April of 1955, their first child, Lyle Thomas Jr., was born, and they moved to Tecumseh in July of that same year, where she and Lyle built their life together, raising their family and registered Hereford cattle. Alice was very talented musically, and throughout her life, she used her musical talents to express her lifelong devotion to God and to others. She sang many solos for weddings and funerals in the Tecumseh area, and she also sang with the Tecumseh United Methodist Church for 35 years until her health no longer allowed it. She could also play the piano and composed music and words to several religious songs including “The Blessed Hope,” which was published in 1982. Alice is survived by her children, Lyle Thomas Jr. and Lauren Bailey, and four grandchildren. Arvis Henry Fletcher, 80, passed away Feb. 11, 2010, after a brave fight against cancer. He was raised in the small community of Gilt Edge, Tenn., and worked on the family farm and in the family grocery business. Inducted into the U.S. Army in 1951, Arvis served in Korea during the war and was awarded a Korean Service Medal with two bronze service stars. He was transferred to Japan and was awarded an Army Occupation Medal. He was

discharged from military service in 1953. After returning home, Arvis and his new wife, Ada, continued the family farming business and started a herd of registered polled Herefords. He was a leader in the Tennessee Polled Hereford Association, serving as president and as a board member. He also served as president and as a board member of the West Tennessee Polled Hereford Association Arvis was a mentor to many young FFA and 4-H members, providing show cattle and educating young people about exhibiting, caring for and breeding cattle. He was also honored to be a director of the Mid-South Fair, serving as an advisor for the cattle exhibitions. He served as a Tipton County Farm Bureau director and was a member of the Tipton County Cattlemen’s Association and the American Hereford Association. Arvis is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ada; his sister, Wanda Coats; and 14 beloved nieces and nephews. James M. “Jimmy” Hathorn Sr., 73, Louisville, Miss., passed away Feb. 12 at the Dixie National Livestock Show in Jackson, Miss. Jimmy was a retired cattleman, owning Triple H Ranch with his family. He was a member of the Mississippi Cattleman’s Association, Mississippi Polled Hereford Association, American Polled Hereford Association and the American Angus Association. He served in the National Guard and was on the Citizens Bank and Trust Co. board of directors. For many years Jimmy worked in railroad construction and with Earnest Construction Co. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Louisville, and was a Mason and a Shriner. Jimmy is survived by his wife, Dee; two daughters, Jayn Duncan and Susan Sanders; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Richard “Dick” Lee Bates, 77, Alpena, Mich., died peacefully March 9. Dick began his career in the cattle business working for Hunsinger

Hereford Farm in Mt. Eaton, Mich., where he showed many champions, including the 1960 national champion heifer. He was recruited to the Mahogony Farm in Williamston, Mich., to manage the show cattle in 1962. Many lifelong friends were made during those years. In 1994 Dick moved to Alpena and realized a dream to build his own log home. He also renewed his cattle interest at Highpointe Farm. He was married to his wife, Sandra, for 44 years before she passed away in 2005. Survivors include Dick’s three children, Richard Bates, Robin Hirth and Jill Langenderfer, and seven grandchildren. Elden August William Lenth, 81, Monona, Iowa, passed away March 11. Elden began his farming career on Elden Lenth the home farm near Monona with a herd of Holstein cows he had started in his 4-H days. In 1954 he purchased a farm southeast of Postville. In 1968 Elden purchased his first registered Hereford cows, selling his dairy herd to son-in-law Darrell Hatlevig. His love of Herefords resulted in Elden receiving many awards on local, state, and national levels and meeting friends all across the country. Through the years, Elden was a member of the Iowa and American Hereford Associations, Clayton and Winneshiek County Cattlemen’s Associations, and the Clayton County Farm Bureau. He was inducted into the Iowa Hereford Hall of Fame and recognized as Clayton County Cattleman of the Year. Elden enjoyed promoting Certified Hereford Beef (CHB®), catering, feeding the Iowa State University football team and much more. Bill J. Ellard, 75, Dallas, passed away March 16. Hereford enthusiasts, Bill and his wife, Jo, formed EE Ranches Bill Ellard Inc. in 1982. The couple developed a herd of registered Herefords and raised champion cutting horses. Bill’s love for animals and passion for helping underprivileged children have driven his charitable contributions for many years. He was a loyal supporter of Hereford youth and the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA). A member of the Air National Guard locally, Bill attended NW Community College in Senatobia, Miss., on a football scholarship. Shortly afterward, Bill was drafted into the Army and spent his basic training at Ft. Chaffee, Ark., where he received a letter of commendation from the Commander General. After being discharged in October 1958, Bill returned home to Arkansas and once again took up rodeo as his favorite pastime. A bull-riding incident sidelined him with broken ribs and a collapsed lung. In December 1958 he went to the local Snelling and Snelling employment agency and told the interviewer he would do anything except “sell insurance.” However his first job interview was with Combined Insurance Company of Chicago, and when the interviewer asked him if he would like to make $30-$50 per day, Bill replied, “Lord yes, what do I have to do?” Bill moved up the ranks from salesman to state sales manager to regional sales manager of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and Oklahoma. In 1970 Bill’s region alone wrote more business than the entire teacher division did nationwide the year before. At this point Bill was living in Dallas. In January 1973 Bill launched National Teacher Associates Inc., and developed it into one of the nation’s premier supplemental health insurance companies. Bill served two consecutive terms on the American Hereford Association (AHA) Board of Directors. Survivors are his wife, Jo; sons, Joe and Brian; and two granddaughters. www.hereford.org

James “Jim” Brett White, 51, Boise, Idaho, passed away March 17. From an early age, Jim was taught the value of hard work and had his first job at the ripe old age of 12. This experience served him well throughout his life, as he wore many hats along the way providing for his family. In 1979 he partnered with his parents and bought a cattle ranch along the Boise River in Parma, Idaho. JB White Herefords raised registered Hereford cattle. It was at this time that he met and fell in love with Debbie Edens, his best friend and devoted wife of 29 years. In 1982 Jim started another business, Northwest Bull Testing Center. He operated the test center for 15 years. In 1988, always looking for new opportunities to provide more for his family, he purchased Energy Tactics Fence Co. Jim and his dad ran the business for 13 years. The rest of his life was devoted to his family, whether volunteering as a coach or helping his kids with 4-H steers. Jim had a passion for basketball that led to a 10-year period of coaching in the Parma school district, including four years as the girls’ varsity coach and three years as the boys’ varsity coach. In 1998 Jim sold the ranch and soon after, the fence business and went to work for Asumendi Produce in Wilder. At the age of 46, with his kids grown and a little more free time, Jim bought the old Edens’ cabin in Donnelly, and for two years, prior to his diagnosis of cancer, he had the time of his life learning to ski at Tamarack. Jim is survived by his wife, Debbie; his children, Lauren Brown, Jordan White and Morgan White; grandson, Jack Brown; and sisters, Cleo Shaw and Julie Asumendi. Bill J. Howell, 75, a lifetime rancher, passed away March 21. Bill grew up in Nebraska and Montana and served in the 2nd Airborne Battle Group, 187th Infantry - Company E. After the service, he worked briefly in Utah, but it wasn’t until 1963 that he found the place he would call his permanent home: Arizona. He became employed by Babbitt Ranch in the fall of that year.

He started out working with the wagon and breaking horses. Eventually, he ended up as the ranch manager for the next 25 years. He worked at Babbitt until 1991, when he retired to a ranch of his own. Bill deeply loved Arizona and the cowboy way of life. He is survived by Lynda, his wife of 24 years; his children, Vic Howell, Tim Howell, Tom Howell, Lane Burritt and Trisha Smith; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. William K. Marston, 81, of Hillsboro, Kan., and formerly of Canton, passed away March 22. He was a retired farmer. Survivors include his wife, Marlys Marston; sons Twig and Shad; daughters Belinda Hulsey and Barbara Dean; 10 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. William’s grandson Andee serves as the American Hereford Association fieldman in the Southeast. Nevelle Jeaane Arbuthnot, 88, Haddam, Kan., passed away March 18. Jeaane was raised in Salina, Kan., and, following graduation, attended Kansas State University (K-State), where she met Robert Arbuthnot. They were married and in 1944 the couple moved to Liberal, Kan., while Robert was stationed there as a part of the Army Air Corps. Following his discharge, they farmed in the Liberal area for a few years until they moved back to Haddam in 1953. Although she had not completed her degree at K-State, Jeaane had received her teaching certificate and began her teaching career in 1957 at Munden, Kan. She returned to K-State, completed her course work and received her degree in education in 1963. For 33 years Jeaane taught elementary education. Throughout her life, Jeaane enjoyed devoting her time to her community whether serving as a 4-H leader or Haddam city librarian or playing organ for the services of the Methodist church of Haddam. Survivors include her children, Rod Arbuthnot and Cindy Brown; three grandchildren; and three greatgrandchildren. HW

The company provides in-stock line items — ranging from frozen entrées and fresh produce and meats to paper plates and even mops to all sorts of restaurants, schools, military bases, hospitals and convenience stores throughout the region. Despite its sprawling size now, Merchants has humble beginnings. Started out of an old church building in Hattiesburg in 1904, the company originally employed 10 people and two horse-drawn drays. It wasn’t long before the company expanded, and by 1923 it had reached $1 million in sales and had its own cornmeal mill, grain elevator and cold storage plant. Over the years the company has owned packing plants and stateof-the-art feed and grain-processing plants, but in 1982 the company chose to focus on distribution. It consolidated into warehouses in Jackson, Clanton and Newberry. Since, it has grown into the foodservice giant it is today. Of the 2,600 food distribution companies in the U.S. in 2009, Institutional Distributor Magazine ranked Merchants Foodservice 20th in the nation in sales. And it’s growing still; in January 2010 Merchants announced its acquisition of a warehouse in Tifton, which broadens the company’s distribution range to cover the entire Southeast. www.hereford.org

The leadership of Merchants Foodservice pause in front of one of the company trucks that promote CHB. Pictured (l to r) are Tim Hanberry, vice president of bids and procurement; Andy Mercier, president and chief executive officer; and Johnny Barlow, vice president of marketing.

Since Merchants began selling CHB, sales have grown steadily; and now the company sells about 35,000 lb. of CHB a month. The company employs two “center-of-theplate specialists,” Alex Tinkle and Ray Freeman. Alex describes the job as showing and selling protein. “Typically the center-of-the-plate or main entrée is going to be steak, fish or chicken. About 99% of what I sell is the Hereford beef line.” He also helps restaurants with menu development or any problems they may have. Alex has experience being on the other side of the sale as he worked in the restaurant business as either general manager or executive chef for 10 years prior to coming to work at Merchants about nine months ago. As a chef he worked with CHB for several years, so it’s an easy sell for him. “Typically we just describe the genetics program, the consistency of the product in comparison to

whatever they are using,” Alex says. “Me personally, I use the fact that I served this beef for years, so I know exactly what it’s going to do, how it’s going to perform.” Ray, who has been with Merchants for more than five years, agrees with Alex’s praise for CHB. “We’ve had very good results,” Ray says. “Even with customers who don’t have a history with Hereford or don’t know right off hand what Hereford is, they have a good experience with it, with the flavor profile, the texture and the tenderness of it.” Common practice in the meat sales industry is winning the chef or buying decision-maker over with a cutting. That’s where Alex says the decision is usually made. “On the tenderloin, I am going to beat everything else in the market, in a certain range of price. Pretty much, (CHB) is the best of both worlds; you get a quality product at a reasonable price.”

Although the No. 1 seller for Merchants is the ribeye, Alex says the difference in Hereford beef really shows in the tenderloin and filet. “The tenderloin in Hereford beef is just head and shoulders above everything else in the market. Part of that comes from the consistency in product and the profile; the taste of the beef comes from the beef, not just the fat. So I’ve found that in the leaner cuts, especially the tenderloin, the New York strip is going to be a

better product than anything else in the market because it doesn’t rely so much on the marbling to achieve the taste.” Merchants is helping CHB grow. Ray says he adds a couple of new accounts each week. “The key to it is not only telling the story, but once they put it in their mouth and they taste how good it is and the tenderness of it, then it becomes a very easy sell,” he says. Alex agrees, saying restaurants are really catching on to the quality and

value in CHB. “That’s my experience of years of people coming in and doing cuttings to try and get my beef business (when I worked in the restaurant business). I haven’t found a product out there yet that’s remotely close in price that will beat it. We’re taking all the big accounts from the competition every day of the week. Almost all of the fine dining restaurants in the metro Jackson area are using Hereford beef right now. I know we are giving the competitors a fit.” Ray says before selling CHB, Merchants offered an Angus product, which he called a “me too” product, campaigning on the Angus name. CHB, though, he says, offers something special, “This is unique. We’re able to walk in and say this is different, everybody else has Angus, you need to look at our Hereford program.” HW

• Ulysses is a great, Red-Eyed and Ready bull. He is very muscular, as you can see in the picture, after spending the winter with the cows. He has a great set of numbers. Ulysses is out of Radar and one of my favorite cows at Paul Funk’s place. And I really like her dam, MSU Lanore 9J. We are getting a great set of calves out of Ulysses and we will have more next year.

Hereford Faces

Mark Holt As you look back on your childhood, some of the simplest activities you did as a youth made a lasting impression on your lifestyle. Mark Holt, American Hereford Association (AHA) field representative, started working on a family friend’s beef and dairy operation at the age of 13. Little did he know the small job he had as a kid would give him the inkling to start a lifelong endeavor in agriculture. The previous experiences and jobs made Mark an ideal fit for the AHA field representative position when he started in December 2002. Mark serves as the face of the Hereford breed in the Western region as he travels seven states. On a daily basis, Mark promotes Hereford cattle by working closely with breeders, assisting in marketing purebred and commercial cattle. Working as a liaison between the AHA and breeders, it is Mark’s goal to communicate with members, informing them of new policy decisions made by the AHA Board of Directors. Mark received his education from Washington State University (WSU). In 1993 he earned a bachelor’s degree in animal science with a minor in agricultural economics. Later Mark went on to complete a degree in agriculture education in 1999. While attending WSU, Mark was an active college student, being part of the 1989-1991 livestock and meats judging teams. Mark values the skills he gained

in analyzing livestock and verbally justifying his decisions. There are several people who influenced Mark when he was in college and establishing his career. To this day he looks up to Frank Rodgers for his continual motivation and desire to see Mark excel in his agricultural career. Mark says he admires Frank’s work ethic and he strives to follow in his footsteps. After Mark completed his degrees from WSU, he managed Venture Farms, located in Ellensburg, Wash., for five years. Mark oversaw two employees and managed 800 cows, 2,500 yearlings and the farm’s artificial insemination (AI) and embryo transfer (ET) programs. After working there, Mark utilized his agriculture education degree and was an agriculture teacher at Lynden High School, Lynden, Wash. This was a very rewarding career for Mark. He says he inspired students to be the best they could be. Mark reached out to the kids who were not on track to attend college and taught them essential job-related skills. This position strengthened Mark’s speaking skills, which he utilizes frequently while giving presentations to breeders. During college Mark says he admired former Hereford fieldman Willard Wolf and thought he had the neatest job in the world. Willard traveled in the West, visiting many of the great registered and commercial ranches. When Willard retired, Mark decided to apply for his position. Mark says what he enjoys most about his job is traveling and visiting ranches. During Mark’s time at AHA, he has developed numerous memories and friendships. One of his favorite memories was helping Babbitt Ranches in Arizona ship 43 loads of yearlings in three days to Ford County Feeders in Kansas. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and he frequently looks through the beautiful pictures of the ranch taken during his stay. Mark enjoys catching up with old friends at shows and sales while making new friends along the way. Jim and Marcia Mickelson, Sonoma

Mountain Herefords, have welcomed him into their family with open arms at Hereford events. Jim and Marcia say they are fortunate to have Mark serving in their territory. “We first met Mark when he was new to the AHA field staff, and we were in the process of expanding our own registered herd. Mark helped us to network with other breeders and assisted us in selecting cattle that would work with our program and in our area of the country. Mark’s ability to work with the registered breeder, commercial cowman and the youth of our breed is a testament to his dedication to the Hereford breed.” Mark is proud of the improvements that he has witnessed while working at the AHA. “The Association is more streamlined with electronic registrations, Hereford e-News and the new updated Web site. We are also a stronger breed that will satisfy the need for whitefaced cattle.” He predicts the Hereford breed will continue to change during the next five to 10 years. “With the domination of one breed and continental breeds making themselves black, there is only one pure breed to use in a planned crossbreeding system,” Mark says. “Commercial ranchers remember how good their black baldie calves and cows were and are aligning their herds to put Hereford genetics back in their pasture.” Mark and his wife, Staci, have been married 14 years and enjoy spending time with their daughter Hailey, who is 5 years old. They recently moved to Emmett, Idaho. Their new location has five acres with a barn for horses or possibly future show cattle for Hailey. As a family they have the opportunity to spend time barrel racing, which Staci and Hailey compete in. With a strong staff and devoted breeders, Mark says he is excited to see what the future brings for the Hereford breed. HW

Bill J. Ellard

M ay 11, 1934 - M arch 16, 2010

Bill created and developed one of the most successful privately owned Life Insurance companies and agency in the country. He also operated ranches in four states. Throughout his life, Bill inspired all people to reach higher, achieve more and be a better person.
