USDA’s outlook work has projected record high cattle prices in 2026 driven by low supplies, and expects beef production to tighten again in 2026—a backdrop that rewards the kind of genetics that add pounds, improve efficiency, and hit the grid with consistency. At the same time, global trade and packer dynamics remain in motion, with developments that can impact demand signals and marketing opportunities.

This year’s group of bulls reflects the mission and goals of Dvorak Herefords. Every bull has been evaluated with individual performance, carcass ultrasound, and genomic testing, with parentage verified and homozygous polled cattle identified where applicable. All cattle will sell under the suggested terms and conditions of the American Hereford Association. All cattle are to be paid for by the purchaser immediately following the sale, unless prior arrangements have been made with either Boyd or Jeff Dvorak.

There will be a base price of $5,000 on 2 year old bulls, $4,750 on yearlings, and $4,250 on all bred heifers selling.

Genetic abnormal ities

All animals have been DNA tested for parentage & genetic abnormalities. All animals selling are free of known genetic abnormalities unless noted on the sale lot. All of these are recessive. They would have to be mated to another known carrier for the possibility of that known abnormality to be expressed.

All animals sold by Dvorak Herefords have passed a semen evaluation, and are guaranteed sound breeders. If an animal fails to be a breeder, buyers can choose a replacement if one is available at the time, or receive credit. Credit will be figured as the purchase price of the bull minus $3,750 salvage. Dvorak Herefords will not warranty a bull for death, but offers to pay one half of a six month term of mortality insurance. Any animal left in the care of Dvorak Herefords must be insured. The guarantee becomes void if the animal in question has been improperly managed or if sickness/injury occurred after the buyer has taken possession of said animal.

All bulls selling have passed a breeding soundness exam from Northwest Vet Clinic at Wagner, SD this also includes a semen evaluation. All animals sold by Dvorak Herefords will have been tested clean for BVD PI. They have been on an extensive vaccination protocol since birth, and received their first footrot shot along with Preg Guard Gold 10 on January 5, 2025. Bulls will be trich tested before sale day. All animals sold in this sale will be sold with health papers for interstate travel.

All heifers will be re-pregnancy checked by Northwest Vet the week of the sale. Del ivery & Exten ded Care

We will deliver bulls within a reasonable distance, and cooperate with buyers on further destinations. We will begin to deliver bulls shortly after the sale depending on our schedule. We ask that arrangements are made to have sale heifers picked up by Feb. 15th. Heifers left after that day will incur a $400 calving charge along with a $10/day feed and care charge, unless arrangements are made prior to the sale. If you choose to leave an animal in Dvorak Herefords care, there will be a charge of $10/day.

Actual Birth Weight (ACT. BW) The weight of a calf taken within 24 hours after birth. Heavy births weights tend to be correleated with calving problems along with other factors.

Adjusted Weaning Weight (ADJ. WW) An unshrunk, off-the-cow calf weight adjusted to 205 days of age and to a mature dam age equivalence.

Weaning Weight Ratio (WW RATIO) An indication of teh animal’s performance at weaning compared to their contemporary group.

Adjusted Yearling Weight (ADJ. YW) An unshrunk weight adjusted to either 365, 452, or 550 days of age.

Yearling Weight Ratio (YW RATIO) An indication of the animal’s perfomrance at one year of age compared to their contemporary group.

Dam Production This is the dam’s average production over her lifetime, showing her average nursing ratios and yearling ratios for the number fo progeny she ahs produced thus far.

Eye Pigment Expressed as a percentage of pigment surrounding the eye.

Direct Calving Ease (CED) CE EPD is based on calving ease scores and birth weights and is measured on a percentage. CE EPD indicates the influence of the sire on calving ease in females calving at 2 years of age.

Birth Weight (BW) BW EPD is an indicator trait for calving ease and is measured in pounds.

Weaning Weight (WW) WW EPD is an estimate of pre-weaning growth that is measured in pounds.

Yearling Weight (YW) YW EPD is an estimate of post-weaning growth that is measured in pounds.

Scrotal Circumference (SC) Measured in centimeters and adjusted to 365 days of age, SC EPD is the best estimate of fertility.

Maternal Milk (M) The MM EPD of a sire’s daughters is expressed in pounds of calf weaned. It predicts the difference in average weaning weights of sires’ daughters’ progeny due to milking ability.

Maternal Milk & Growth (M&G) The M&G EPD reflects what the sire is expected to transmit to his daughters for a combination of growth genetics through weaning and genetics for milking ability.

Mature Cow Weight (MCW) The MCW EPD was designed to help breeders select sires that will either increase or decrease mature size of cows in the herd.

Rib Fat (FAT) The FAT EPD reflects differences in adjusted 365-day, 12th-rib fat thickness based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle.

Ribeye Area (REA) REA EPDs reflect differences in an adjusted 365-day ribeye area measurement based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle.

Marbling (MARB) MARB EPDs reflect differences in an adjusted 365-day marbling score (intramuscular fat, [IMF]) based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle.

Baldy Maternal Index (BMI$) The BMI$ is a maternally focused index that is based on a production system that uses Hereford x Angus cross cows. Progeny of these cows are directed towards Certified Hereford Beef. This index has significant weight on Sustained Cow Fertility, which predicts fertility and longevity of females.

Certified Hereford Beef Index (CHB$) CHB$ is a terminal sire index that is built on a production system where Hereford bulls are mated to mature commercial Angus cows where all progeny will be targeted for Certified Hereford Beef after the finishing phase. This index has significant weight on Carcass Weight and Marbling to ensure profit on the rail.

Percents are the animal’s percentile ranking among the breed for that trait.

MATERNALADVANTAGE

The Maternal Advantage program generates females with added longevity, more docility, increased fertility and more profit per year. Can be utilized by producers using Hereford bulls on British-based cows or Brahman-based cows in their breeding program. Producers utilizing the program will have access to a sire EPD summary, added market exposure, replacement selection tools, genetic improvement tools and access to AHA resources, marketing and staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

Producers must verify that eligible females are sired by registered Hereford bulls with transferred ownership.

Participating bull batteries must rank in the top 50% of the breed for Baldy Maternal Index (BMI$) if used on British-based cows or the top 50% of the breed for Brahman Influence Index (BII$) if used on Brahman- based cows.

POLLED/HORNED INHERITANCE

One of the most often conversations we have with bull customers is the polled/horned inheritance. We hope that this label will help explain it better. It is safe to assume that long term straight bred angus cows are homozygous polled. With that assumption, it leads to more opportunities to use heterozygous polled and even horned bulls.

USING A HORNED BULL

Mated to horned cows: 100% of calves are horned Mated to heterozygous polled cows: 50% of calves are horned, 50% of calves are polled Mated to Homozygous polled cows: 100% of calves are polled

USING A HETEROZYGOUS POLLED BULL

Mated to horned cows: 50% of calves are horned, 50% of calves are polled Mated to heterozygous polled cows: 25% of calves are horned, 75% of calves are polled Mated to homozygous polled cows: 100% of calves are polled

Richard D. Dvorak December 6, 1942-January 7, 2025

Richard Dean Dvorak, 83, passed away on January 7, 2026, surrounded by his loving family at the Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls. A lifelong Christian and devoted family man, Richard’s life was marked by service, storytelling, and a deep connection to the land he called home.

Born on December 6, 1942, in Wagner, South Dakota, Richard grew up with strong country roots. He began his education in a one-room schoolhouse and graduated from Ravinia High School in 1960. He was proud to be a Ravinia Bear, where he played quarterback for the football team and ran track. But the best part of high school was meeting his sweetheart, Darlene Johnson. Richard said that he chased her until she finally gave in. They have many memories of going dancing and roller skating with friends at Rest Haven.

Shortly after graduation, he answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army. But before being stationed in Germany as a tank mechanic, he married the love of his life, Darlene on May 5, 1962. Both he and Darlene cherished the time that they had together as newlyweds in Germany, and the grandkids loved to hear Grandpa tell the story of how Grandma travelled across the world on her own to be with him and somehow it all worked out.

After returning home from the Army, Richard embraced the life of a farmer and rancher—a role he cherished throughout his life. Even today, he was proud to be the only member of the Dvorak family in his generation to stay and work the land. His sons eventually joined him, and together they expanded the farm and ranch. In 2022 Dvorak Herefords were honored as the SD Hereford Breeder of the Year.

When Jeff and Boyd completely took over the farm and ranch operations, Richard retired but continued to play an active role working with his boys and “supervising” the farm and ranch. Richard was a man of the land. Whether overseeing harvests or tending livestock, Richard found purpose and fulfillment in working the land and even in his final days reminded us all that God is in the hills.

But Richard’s family was his greatest joy. As the kids and grandkids were growing up, he rarely missed a ball game, concert, or other event. So proud of each of them, he would tease us that one day he would shout from the stands, “That’s my boy!” or “That’s my girl!” All of the kids and most of the grandkids took driving lessons from Richard in his 1940s Jeep Willy. While he was hesitant to say “I love you,” his actions showed us that he loved us deeply.

Richard was a devoted member of East Lake Andes Lutheran Church. His faith was central to his life; he served on the church council, taught Sunday School, and helped care for “God’s Acres,” contributing both time and heart to his congregation. A man of deep faith, was often called on to lead prayers and devotions for family and community gatherings.

He had an extraordinary gift for friendship and humor. Known for telling stories and jokes that could light up any room, Richard was a friend to everyone he met. Mornings often began with what he fondly called “therapy”—sharing coffee with friends while exchanging laughs and wisdom. He also enjoyed attending auctions with his friend Dick Crabtree where he delighted in finding unique oddities to add to his collection—each item with its own story waiting to be told. Later in life, he took up writing poetry and would often share it at special events, like class reunions and birthdays. To have had Richard write you a poem was a special treat.

Finally, Richard was also very active as a leader in his community, from 4-H to the American Legion and more. He was most proud of having served more than 20 years on the Charles Mix Electric Co-op Board of Directors (nine years as president) and many years on the Wagner Farmer’s Co-op Association Board.
