When my teacher said "good morning" to me on the very first day of school, I knew that she would be teaching a tough subject. She didn't get any answer for that greeting because back then, I knew nothing about "good morning". Surprisingly, as I went through the class session on that day, I realized that "good morning" wasn't the first English phrase that I'd known. English has been rooted in my society long before my country achieved its independence and shockingly I've used some of its words in my daily speech without realizing it because the words were fully modified by the society so that they could be installed smoothly into our language. Learning English was always an interesting yet tough experience...show more content...

When someone speaks English in my society, he or she feels a sense of withdrawal because they are set apart to a very small group in the society. People tend to belittle this group for speaking other languages, and normally they will end up speaking their first language to comply with the larger group in the society. With all these reasons, my interest towards English was completely gone when I enrolled in secondary school, six years after my formal `encounter' with the English language. For having this negative feeling, I became a member of a large group of students who had never realized the significance of the English language. One day was unusually dull. I was waiting for the teacher to come to the class and instead of revising my past English lessons that I rarely cared about, I prayed that she wouldn't show up that day. After ten minutes' wait, she entered the class saying "good morning". The greeting didn't bother me much, but when she came to me asking for the assignment that she gave the day before, I was speechless and I just gave her the blank handout that I was supposed to complete for that day. Her face showed no emotion and with that she ripped the paper into pieces. That day marked a massive change in my attitude toward English lessons and the English language in general. The incident was very important to me because I then realized that even in a subtle way, language represents people and to respect the language means to respect Get more content

English in My Life Essay

For a long time, one thing had always been the same: my love for English. It had always been a flame burning within me, something that could never be completely distinguished. I've had my share of both good and bad English teachers, from both I have gained important

To my seventh grade English teacher:

Thank you. At the time, I despised all the activities you made my class do. I despised the months we spent going over commas. I despised the books we were forced to read. Little did I know how many of these thing would be used in the future.

I am now an expert in the usage of the comma. Those months spent doing comma practices at the start of the class finally paid off. I appreciate Shakespeare in a way I would never have if it wasn't for you. I remember struggling through A Midsummer Night's Dream as the thought of giving up swam through my head. At the end of the book, you had us divide into groups and act out scenes. Surprisingly, I had a great deal of fun. Everyone went full out with costumes and props. I also understand symbolism and have learned how to persevere through particularly mundane books. We read Animal Farm in that class. The fact that a story about farm animals could stand for real life effects blew my mind. Additionally, for every paper of mine you 'lost' and that I would later find right where it was supposed to be, I learned to be more assertive.

My love for English stopped twirling in the breeze and, for the first time, began to flicker.

Goals for English Essay

Henry David Thoreau once said, "In the long run, men hit only that they aim at, therefore they had better aim at something high." I agree with Thoreau completely. When you have goals in life, you're going to do anything and everything to accomplish those goals. Therefore why not set higher goals that you will endeavor just with diminutive amount of more effort? One semester of English has gone by and there's another semester to go. Even though I have done fairly well in English the first semester, I would like to do even better the second semester. I can only do better if I have a plan and this plan is the different types of goals I am going to set for myself. You can't be a good student by just doing well in ...show more content...

Another problem that I'm having in my writing that I would like to improve next marking period is using less words. I tend to use too many words and make my writing too wordy. It's not that Irepeat sentences, I just tend to add too many details that aren't even needed. I plan on fixing this problem by always going through my writing and seeing which words I could take out that would not make the sentence any different. I believe that writing is all about quality and not quantity. Someone could have a 5 page essay, but if there's no quality in the essay then the essay is useless.

Thinking:

The thought process is a very important process, therefore you can never be too good of a thinker. There's always need for improvement. I am able to think much better this year but somehow my ideas are never organized. I always analyze the material I am given but don't ever try to associate it with other things we have learned. I think I can start organizing my ideas by writing down my ideas and brain storming. I'm not used to brainstorming but if that's what I need to do to become a better thinker then there's never a better time to start.

Listening:

Listening is very important and even nature tells us that. Nature gave us one tongue and two ears so we could hear twice as much as we speak. I would definitely like to be a more conscientious listener. I have became a better listener due to the assessment

There are as many types of power as there are people" Is this true of the texts you have studied? In your response you should relate to your prescribed text (1984) and ONE related text. Power can be defined as many types ranging from physical, psychological, love, status or government. With power comes great responsibility. If power is not controlled, negative consequences could be developed. This is noticeable through the 2 texts that have been analysed, George Orwell 1984 and Disney Pixar Film WALL E. In both these texts, countless types of power can be extracted whether it is being used for the good or bad. Power is Power, what you do with it is your decision. George Orwell novel is a social commentary of a dystopian future in...show more content...

Disney Pixar is portraying a strong message of technological power in which an individual should not have a strong reliance on as it can backfire in the long run, this message is successfully achieved in this film. The unusual use of technology as a tool of inflicting power also plays a vital role in 1984. The recurring motif of telescreens suggests the disturbing presence of the higher authorities invading privacy. "Winston kept his back turned to the telescreen. It was safer, though, as he well knew, even a back can be revealing" tq...effect: evokes dramatic tension from the result of being constantly watched & the risk of being caught which is constantly repeated throughout the novel. Orwell evokes empathy as the reader relates to Winston as they question the loss of privacy, dignity and freedom as well as the Government destroying the lives of so many people yet they cannot do anything to fight back. The way in which George Orwell describes the telescreen shows absolute power it gains over Oceania. "Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past." (TQ) This portrays an important example of the Party's knowledge of using false history to break down the psychological independence of Oceania. Control of the past ensures control of the future, because the past can be treated essentially as a set of steps that justify or encourage future goals. The Party creates a past that was a time of

English Year 11 Essay

Through his poem "Theme for English B", Langston Hughes expresses his will to exterminate discrimination by proving that despite different skin colors, Americans all share similarities and learn from each other. Langston wrote the poem in 1900, when black Americans were not considered Americans. He talks about a black student being assigned to write a paper about himself. The audience is thus the student's professor–the representation of the white Americans. Since the professor said: "let that page come out of you Then, it will be true.", the student began wondering "if it's that simple". He then describes himself to explain why it isn't simple: he is "twenty–two", "the only colored in class", and lives in the poor community Harlem....show more content...

Sometimes, the difference make them not want to be a part of each other, yet "that's true": they are living in America– a multicultural country that values equality and liberty. That is why they should learn to deal with the differences and take advantages of the similarities as well as to experience different points of views: "as I learn from you, I guess you learn from me". Through this process, both of them win and neither loses. The professor is "older and somewhat more free" than the student, so he should be free of biases towards the student's poverty and background. Throughout the poem, the author chooses simple diction. This makes the tone straightforward and blunt, like a black America who simply expresses himself instead of sermonizing about discrimination. Thereby, readers can accept the poem's argument more easily. Furthermore, the author writes the poem mostly in long sentences to emphasize on short yet important sentences such as "That's America.", "Be we are. That's true!" The poem has a tied and effective structure. It opens with a familiar scene: a professor asks students to write assignment. However, as the student's question "I wonder if it's that simple" triggers readers' curiosities, since the assignment seems to be simple. As the poem progresses, we understand more of the assignment's difficulties. The conflict comes to the climax at the sentence "will my page be colored what I write?" and is solved right after that, from line 28
