Cinderella Fri 8 Dec 2023 – Mon 1 Jan 2024

Welcome to Buxton Opera House & Pavilion Arts Centre! As 2023 draws to a close, we are looking forward to yet another spectacular pantomime season with Cinderella! We are thrilled to welcome back Buxton favourites James Holmes as an Ugly Sister and the wonderful Georgia Gallagher as Cinderella. Making his first appearance in Buxton as our second Ugly Sister is the amazing David Dale, in what will be his 30th pantomime! For those aged 3-8 years and their families, our brand-new production of Hare & Tortoise in the Pavilion Arts Centre might be just the ticket! This seasonal musical play is especially designed for our younger audiences and is the perfect introduction to theatre. As we enter 2024, the exciting programme continues with a line up of top artists and companies including the return of English Touring Opera, Northern Ballet, Varna International Ballet with The Nutcracker and Swan Lake or if Strictly Come Dancing has had you glued to the television, then Giovanni Pernice

will be here to entertain you in February. Building on the success of Little Shop of Horrors and Sweeney Todd, we are thrilled to announce that our 2024 community production will be Andrew Lloyd Webber’s sensational Evita! Auditions will take place on Saturday 6 January. Please check the website for more information. Following the recent sell out run at Buxton Opera House, our hugely successful co-production of The Full Monty is now on a national tour which includes visits to Liverpool Empire and Manchester Opera House in early 2024. This brand new production, in partnership with the Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham, would not have been possible without the generous support from Arts Council England.

Technical Youth Theatre

The Full Monty 2023

Our newly appointed National Portfolio Status has also provided vital investment to expand our Learning and Engagement offering and increase access to theatre in Buxton and beyond. Over the past 6 months we have been able to support community participation and emerging performers in our spring community production of Little Shop of Horrors and launch a brand new singing group for people living with cancer in Chesterfield.

December to develop access to the arts in the High Peak, as well as 10 public performances in the Pavilion Arts Centre from Saturday 16 – Sunday 24 December.

We have also invested in our Technical Youth Theatre and Youth Theatre programmes. In October we launched our brand-new youth theatre festival, FUSE, which welcomed an exciting programme of theatre practitioners who inspired, challenged, and encouraged our young participants to take part in workshops covering everything from Shakespeare to short films.

This funding has also allowed us to offer an increased programme of accessible performances to ensure as many people as possible are able to enjoy our shows. Take a look at our upcoming accessible performances overleaf.

Our Learning & Engagement team have also been busy producing our first in-house winter production of Hare & Tortoise. The show will be heading out on a schools tour this

LET’S CREATE

Thanks to Arts Council funding our Learning & Engagement team have been out and about in local schools, both providing an artist in residence delivering drama and music sessions to all years, and running after school drama and musical theatre clubs.

The Rake’s Progress

by Puccini Manon Lescaut is a dramatic and musical triumph and was Puccini’s first great success. Based on a controversial book by the Abbé Provost, Manon Lescaut is a devastating depiction of a woman wrestling with her desire for love on her own terms, and the rigid double standards imposed on her by society. Jude Christian, fresh from a critically acclaimed Titus Andronicus at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, brings her incisive direction and a sharp, poetic new translation to the production, while ETO Music Director Gerry Cornelius conducts. Performed in English with English surtitles.

By Igor Stravinsky Igor Stravinsky’s brilliantly inventive The Rake’s Progress charts young Tom Rakewell’s journey from an unexpected inheritance to ruin at the hands of his own naivety and a mysterious new friend. One of Stravinsky’s crowning achievements in his pioneering career, the opera is a cynical but ultimately humanistic depiction of how the devil finds work for idle hands. The production is helmed by Polly Graham, Artistic Director of Longborough Festival Opera, and the highly regarded conductor and composer Jack Sheen. Performed in English with English surtitles.

THURSDAY 25 – SUNDAY 28 APRIL

Following the success of Little Shop of Horrors last spring, Buxton Opera House is excited to showcase the amazing talent of local performers in its production of Evita, directed by Paul Kerryson. The musical follows the story of the young and ambitious Eva Peron’s meteoric rise to sainthood. Set in Argentina between 19341952, Eva Duarte’s journey moves from poor illegitimate child to ambitious actress to, as wife of military leader-turned-president Juan Peron, the most powerful woman in Latin America.

Eva Peron, 1944

How will Eva Peron deal with this rise to power? With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice (the creative geniuses behind Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Jesus Christ Superstar), Evita has become a firm favourite within the musical community. The 7-Tony Award-winning musical features songs Requiem for Evita, A New Argentina and notably the ballad of Eva Peron Don’t Cry for Me Argentina. Auditions will take place Saturday 6 January. Please check our website for more information.
