Oliver! will transport you to the Dickensian streets of London whilst Rent takes you to the energetic streets of New York in the 1990s. Rent has won many awards including the coveted Pulitzer Prize – a vibrant and contemporary version of the opera La Boheme with thrilling music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson. As with West Side Story, both these musicals will be a platform for young talent in the High Peak and we’re looking for young people aged 8 to 30 to audition: For the work house boys, Oliver and Dodger (age 8-14) auditions will be held on 1 December 2018. Hoping to find fame and fortune in London, our young hero Dick Whittington makes his way down Ye Olde M1 with nothing but a sandwich and a can-do attitude; but he’s out of luck until he meets a friendly cat with a knack for catching rats. As his cat gets to work ridding the city of its furry pests, it seems Dick’s dream will come true. Little does he know the scary King Rat – a nasty geezer with an army of rodents at his command – is getting ready to pounce. Dick Whittington is one of the nation’s best loved rags-to-riches stories. Buxton's favourite Dame, James Holmes (‘Clive’ from the hit comedy series Miranda) returns as Dame Sarah the Cook, while Gabrielle Green ('Katrina' from CBBC's Wolfblood) is the lovely Alice Fitzwarren. Accessible Performances Relaxed performance Seeing your first pantomime should be an exciting experience, but for children on the autistic spectrum and people with learning disabilities the shouts, bangs and flashes can be alarming. Additionally, many families with children who express themselves loudly, or get up and move around, find it difficult to attend formal theatre performances. With the support of local businesses, we are delighted to be able to hold a relaxed performance of Dick Whittington at 5.30pm on Tuesday 11 December. To make the performance more comfortable we will adapt the script, sound, lighting and length of the performance and provide a quiet space where children can relax and unwind if they need a few moments away from the action. Tickets for the Relaxed Performance are £10, with one essential companion being free of charge.

BSL interpreted performance There will be an interpreted performance of Dick Whittington on Tuesday 18 December at 7pm. For more information, visit the website or call the Box Office on 01298 72190

La Fille mal gardée

12

Recreated by Alexander Gorsky, this remains one of the oldest ballets still regularly performed. A gentle tale of love thwarted, unrequited and found. It is a masterpiece of comedy. With plenty of ribbons, romance and rivalry, La Fille mal gardée conjures up a world of pastoral simplicity where a farm boy woos a flirty farmer’s daughter and they find inventive ways to avoid her mother. Complete with virtuoso pas de deux, maypole and clog dances, this classic ballet will send you home happy, delighting those enjoying it for the very first time as well as those who want to see it again and again.

SATURDAY 5 JANUARY 2.30PM & 7.30PM

Swan Lake

The greatest romantic ballet of all time is brought to life by Tchaikovsky’s haunting and unforgettable score. From the impressive splendour of the Palace ballroom to the moon-lit lake where swans glide in perfect formation, this compelling tale of tragic romance has it all. Odile, the temptress in black tulle, seduces the Prince by spinning with captivating precision to the spellbound purity of the swan queen while Odette flutters with emotional intensity. This dual role of Odette/Odile is one of ballet’s most technical challenges.

SUNDAY 6 JANUARY 2.30PM & 5.30PM

Programme to include Mozart, Franck and Ernst.

The Nutcracker

This most famous of fantasy ballets for all the family begins as night falls on Christmas Eve. As snowflakes fall outside, the warm glow of the open fire sends flickering shadows across the boughs of the Christmas tree and all the presents beneath. When midnight strikes we are swept away to a fairy-tale world where nothing is quite as it seems, toy dolls spring to life, the Mouse King and his mouse-army battle with the Nutcracker Prince and we travel through the Land of Snow to an enchanted place where the magic really begins...

The Queen of Spades In Tchaikovsky’s intense opera of obsession and the supernatural, Gherman is caught between the woman he loves and a destructive fixation. The Queen of Spades is based on a short story by Pushkin, and comes to the Royal Opera House in a new production that has already garnered five star reviews in Amsterdam. The production is set in 1890, the year of the opera’s premiere. In his study, Tchaikovsky imagines the opera into life as his own story, its characters giving voice to his unfulfilled desires. Cloudbusting

Collabro

Performing the music of Kate Bush with authenticity and passion since 2012, the five-piece Cloudbusting have been championed by BBC1 as one of the top tributes in the world. They will be celebrating this woman’s work in theatres up and down the UK with a new show, 40 Years of Kate.

Collabro, the world’s most successful musical theatre group, met in 2014 for their first rehearsal at a London pub. Just a month later they went on to rouse the whole of Hammersmith Apollo into a standing ovation during their first ever public performance of ‘Stars’ for the Britain’s Got Talent judges.

The show will centre around a celebration of The Kick Inside, songs like Wuthering Heights, The Saxophone Song and The Man with the Child in his Eyes staged against eye-popping visuals and projections. The rest of Kate’s career is represented by a vibrant choice of hits and album classics that could leave no Kate Bush fan disappointed.

Having triumphed in their semi-final heat with over 63% of the votes, they then won the overall competition with one of the biggest majorities ever. This subsequently led to them joining Simon Cowell’s label Syco, and hence becoming label-mates with the likes of One Direction, Little Mix, Susan Boyle and Il Divo.

Don Quixote

It’s nearly ten years since Island Records persuaded the Fisherman’s Friends to sign the record deal that saw their album Port Isaac’s Fisherman’s Friends become the first traditional folk act to land a UK top ten album.

In Carlos Acosta's first productoin for the Royal Ballet, he lends his award-winning expertise to this joyful classic. His vibrant staging brings together the whole Company in such roles as exuberant villagers, passionate gypsies and even fantasy flowers. The story follows Don Quixote’s picaresque journey to do deeds in honour of his imaginary noble lady, Dulcinea. Sunny, charming, funny and touching – Don Quixote is a ballet as full of uplifting emotion as it is of astonishing ballet technique.

A new play by award-winning playwright Kevin Fegan, featuring Michelle Todd as Bess.

In 2017 former Bellowhead front-man and multiple BBC Folk Award winner Jon Boden introduced the new big band Jon Boden & The Remnant Kings.

Get ready for an evening of inspirational adventure films coming at you from the wildest corners of the globe!

Born a farmer’s daughter, Bess rose to become the richest woman in Elizabethan England. She created the Cavendish dynasty, built Chatsworth House and Hardwick Hall and became a maker of queens. Bess was the closest female friend and Lady-in-Waiting to Elizabeth I and, at the same time, confidante to Mary Queen of Scots, whom Bess and her 4th husband (the Earl of Shrewsbury) kept under “house-arrest” for over 15 years until Mary’s execution.

Supported by the release of the new album ‘Afterglow’, which explores stories from a post-oil world, the band have now toured to major venues across the UK with material from the album interspersed with songs and tunes from across Jon’s career.

This ambitious show is presented as a seamless mix of powerful live performance and luscious film, shot on location at Hardwick Hall.

In spring 2019 Jon will be bringing the Afterglow experience to smaller venues with a cut-down line-up: Jon Boden & The Remnant Strings featuring Jon Boden (fiddle, guitars, concertina, stomp-box), Helen Bell (viola), Morven Bryce (violin) and Lucy Revis (cello).

Elizabeth I

Elizabeth I shows the woman behind the monarch. The queen had the reputation of a queen who ruled with her head, and silenced her heart - but artists remained fascinated with her private life, and in particular her rivalry with her cousin Mary, Queen of Scots. Rossini’s opera sparkles with vocal fireworks which culminate in a virtuosic showdown between The Virgin Queen (Mary Plazas), her councillor (John-Colyn Gyeantey), her lover (Luciano Botelho) and his wife (Lucy Hall). The simple but splendid period production is designed by Frankie Bradshaw, and conducted by John Andrews (Pia de’ Tolomei). The first fully staged professional production Rossini’s opera Elizabeth I (Elisabetta, regina d'Inghilterra) to tour the UK. With this opera Rossini conquered the capital of opera in his day, Naples. Together with The Barber of Seville, it also made his reputation in Britain. Sung in Italian with English surtitles. Following the huge success of our production of West Side Story, our talented young musical company are bringing you two contrasting musicals in 2019 – the ever popular hit musical Oliver! by Lionel Bart and the dynamic rock musical Rent. As with West Side Story, both these musicals will be a platform for young talent in the High Peak and supported by the expertise of the creative team at the Opera House.

BOX OFFICE 01298 72190 BUXTONOPERAHOUSE.ORG.UK 48

Based on Charles Dickens' novel, Oliver Twist, the classic musical Oliver! is widely hailed as a true theatrical masterpiece. The streets of Victorian England come to life as Oliver, a malnourished orphan in a workhouse, becomes the neglected apprentice of an undertaker. Oliver escapes to London and finds acceptance amongst a group of petty thieves and pickpockets led by the elderly Fagin. When Oliver is captured for a theft that he did not commit, the benevolent victim, Mr. Brownlow takes him in. Fearing the safety of his hideout, Fagin employs the sinister Bill Sikes and the sympathetic Nancy to kidnap him back, threatening Oliver’s chances of discovering the true love of a family. Following on from last year’s hugely successful production of West Side Story, this production of Oliver! once again features talented local people aged 16-28 alongside a professional choreographer, musical director and musicians, and directed by our very own Chief Executive, Paul Kerryson. Rent is a multi-award winning rock musical based on Puccini's opera La Bohème, but transported to the vibrant streets of New York City. Rent takes place in the early 1990s following a year in the life of Mimi, Mark, Roger, Angel and their bohemian friends as they face the excitement and angst of the approaching millennium. The roller coaster of emotions is accompanied by a thrilling musical score including the hit numbers, Seasons of Love, Without You and La Vie Bohème as we journey through the adventures, loves and losses of our city dwellers as they struggle to find love, friendship and of course pay the rent! Rent is a powerful and dynamic musical reaching a stunningly raw and thrilling conclusion. It ran for an incredible 12 years on Broadway. Following on from our hugely successful production of West Side Story, Rent once again features a young and talented cast supported by the professional expertise of the Opera House including a thrilling band. It will be directed by Opera House CEO Paul Kerryson. Ages 14 & over only. Contains themes of an adult and sexual nature. TICKETS: £19 & £23 Discounts not available

Our Box Office sells tickets on behalf of companies that include visiting theatres, concerts, shows, artists and other venues. These clients decide the value of the tickets and the money collected from the sale of tickets is passed on accordingly. The advertised price of a ticket is the price that you pay; all ticket prices include any taxes, levies and booking fees. The Opera House Box Office opening hours vary depending on performance times, but it is usually open Monday to Saturday: 10am to 6pm (10am to 8pm when there is a performance) and Sunday: 4pm to 8pm (when there is a performance). Buxton Cinema tickets can be purchased or collected from the cinema bar just before the start of the film. Alternatively, tickets can be purchased or collected in advance from the main Opera House box office up to an hour before the start of the film.

ACCESS

The Opera House is an Edwardian building and only partially accessible to wheelchair users. The level access entrance is 72cms at its narrowest point. Unfortunately the building cannot be accessed by motorised scooters. We have three wheelchair spaces in the Stalls at ground floor level and an accessible toilet. If you will be transferring from a wheelchair to theatre seating please let us know when booking. The Stalls Bar is not accessible, but a member of staff will gladly bring refreshments to your seat. Although the Opera House foyer and Box Office counter are not accessible, there is wheelchair access to the Box Office side door in Water Street, where there is an intercom system. The Pavilion Arts Centre has good downstairs accessibility including accessible toilets, however the layout of the seating can change for certain shows, please check when booking. For your safety, we advise that you bring a companion if you would have difficulty making your own way out of our buildings in an emergency. We have passive infra–red (PIR) systems in both venues for customers with hearing impairments. Please reserve through the Box Office when you book your tickets (£10 cash deposit required, limited availability). There is an induction loop system at both Box Offices. Assistance dogs are welcome, please let us know if they are accompanying you.

RESTRICTED VIEW

A small number of seats on all levels of the theatre have a restricted view of the stage. We want our customers to have the best experience, so when you book online, an information box appears over these seats to let you know that there may be a restricted or side view, if you would like more information please contact our Box Office before booking. When attending an opera, please note that surtitles may not be visible from some seats, again, please check with the Box Office before booking. Family tickets arenot available on restricted view seats.

CHILDREN

We welcome children to the theatre and include a varied programme of children’s shows and events throughout the year. We have a number of booster seats available on first come first served basis. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Groups should have one adult per 10 children. Children under three and babies less than 12 months are welcome at family shows where the £2.50 discounted price or ‘Babies Free’ is shown. For safety reasons the Upper Circle side seats and boxes in the Opera House are not suitable for families with children under 10 years old. The Studio Theatre seating is not suitable for children under three years old.
