Report to our Community

Dear Friends,

Resiliency is the word that comes to mind as I think about Imagine's 2022 - 2023 program year, our 10th year in existence. As a former Imagine participant and a currently grieving mother of four children, I have the gift and opportunity each and every day to see the world through the eyes of a grieving family. My two biological children lost their father, Mike Schambach, when they were 4 years old and 4 weeks old. My wonderful life partner's sons, lost their mother suddenly when they were 7 and 4 years old. All four children have used Imagine's services at times in their lives; as have my partner and I. I am filled with the deepest gratitude for the individuals who have given to this organization for the past ten years to ensure that it existed when my family needed it and still exists today for each and every grieving family that walks through our doors

What I have come to understand is that loss and the grief that follows is meant to change us. Grief and loss open a portal, a painful, exhausting, excruciating portal that transforms our lives from the ones we planned to a new one entirely that we may have never even imagined. It has been five years since the death of my husband and since becoming a widow and being introduced to Imagine I have been thinking of ways to improve the quality of our world from all those who are grieving.

The team and community here at Imagine have given our whole hearts to improving the quality and quantity of our services for our families, from adding psychoeducational workshops and group outings for grieving families to expanding our services throughout the schools and advocating for the needs of families in tragedy. The Imagine team and this community knows the critical importance of intervening for families whose lives are upended due to death and that with our core peer to peer grief support programs, we are building healthy, emotional aware and resilient children who will grow up making the world a better place.

Thank you for the past ten years of allowing Imagine to serve families. Thank you for being alongside us during this incredible year of growth and sustainability. Thank you for your support in all ways and we look forward to continuing to serve the families of NJ for years to come.

With love and light, Executive Director Imagine, A Center for Coping with Loss

Celebrating 10 Years

How did we get here?

Many people and organizations contributed to the success, growth, and longevity of Imagine. It started with the vision and funding from Dr Gerald Glasser under the direction of Mary Robinson, and continued, thanks to the dedication of our staff, the willingness and desire to help from hundreds of volunteers, and the ongoing advocacy and support from the members of our Board of Directors

Thanks to the Board

Over the past ten years, Imagine’s Board of Directors has supported our mission and advocated for Imagine's growth and sustainability. We are grateful to all the members over these past ten n and service, and we want to pay special tribute to the five individuals r of the Imagine Board over these ten years.

Dr Gerald Glasser was an Imagine visionary and, according to Mary Robinson, “the catalyst for creating a center of healing and hope for families coping with loss” The initial grant for startup funding for Imagine was provided through The Thomas Glasser Foundation, a philanthropic organization set up in memory of Dr Glasser’s son, Thomas Glasser, who was a victim of the 9/11 attacks Dr Glasser started the foundation in memory of Tom whose desire had been to support organizations serving children The Thomas Glasser Foundation continues to provide generous annual support to Imagine Imagine remains beyond grateful for Dr Glasser's vision and impact, as well as the continued generous support of the Glasser Foundation to Imagine Imagine is honored to carry on Dr Glasser's legacy

Our Volunteers –an integral part of Imagine

Imagine volunteers – over 600 of them –are people who make things happen. They donate their time on our Nights of Support, as facilitators, greeters, set up and clean up crew and more, welcoming our families and providing safe spaces, as well as on committees, dedicated to fundraisers and awareness building activities such as tabling and serving as ambassadors Over the years, they have guided our children and families, stuffed envelopes, assembled training binders, and supported Greta’s Run and our annual Breakfast fundraiser, and more Without these 600+ individuals over these 10 years, Imagine would not have been able to make the difference in our community that we have

Being an Imagine volunteer has been the most fulfilling and worthwhile volunteer experience I’ve ever had.

Aimee, Imagine Facilitator for 6+ years

We celebrate three long-term facilitators:

Lisa D’Amico

Joanne Lukowiak

Kathy Sosnowski

We wouldn’t be where we are today without the selfless dedication of all the Imagine volunteers

“I have witnessed profound strength and resilience among families who arrived broken by loss Watching families find hope and light as they heal when given the opportunity to share their stories of life, loss, and love has been a truly inspiring experience”

Kathy,

Imagine Facilitator for 10+ years

“People outside of Imagine are always supportive when theyhear that I volunteer at a grief support center. But I know it can be a little confusingto hear that volunteering at a grief support center is the best night of my week. And that’s the magic That as a volunteer, the joyis not in what we bring, but what we take home from our participants.” Rob,

Imagine Facilitator for 4+ years

New Programs

Widows and Widowers Retreat

With the goal of providing care for the caregivers of Imagine, in March 2023, Imagine hosted it's 1st Widow and Widowers Retreat at Uplands Retreat Center in Walton NY. During this two-day event, 11 Imagine participants participated in a weekend of yoga, hiking, grief support, healthy meals, and time to relax and reflect

Free Camp Opportunities

Through the generosity of our supporters and the collaboration with our community partners, Imagine offered Free Camp Opportunities for our youngest participants JCC of Central New Jersey opened 20 spots for one month of free summer camp and the JCC camp staff also received grief-informed training from Imagine’s Training & Education team prior to the start of camp. Farbrook Day Camp offered two scholarships to join their summer 2023 day camp We are grateful to these community partners who support Imagine’s children

Butterfly Release at Fairview Cemetery

In October 2022, Imagine held a Butterfly Release Ceremony in partnership with Fairview Cemetery. At this event, Imagine families released butterflies in memory of a loved one who died It was truly a beautiful and touching event So much so, that we held a second Butterfly Release Ceremony in May 2023

South Ward Promise Neighborhood

The South Ward Promise Neighborhood (SWPN), a partial US Department of Education Promise Grant recipient, provides free support services to families in need. They've partnered with Imagine to offer grief support to Newark families Justine Assante, SWPN’s Director of Partner Operations, values Imagine's help in guiding families through grief, offering both expression platforms and resilience-building tools. SWPN, now grief-informed through Imagine's programs, stands equipped to aid grieving families, striving to ensure no child grieves alone

Mother's Day Celebration and Acknowledgement of Loss for Children whose Mothers are Deceased

Life Academy is one of the first Newark-area schools to participate in Imagine’s Grief-Informed School Initiative funded by a Health Care Foundation of NJ Grant Imagine has provided trainings to administration, staff, and parents. As a result of this initiative, in 2023, Life Academy offered a Mother's Day Celebration for the students whose mothers have died, to create a safe space where they could receive support from their peers and their grief informed teachers and leaders

Greta’s Run

The 10th annual Greta’s Run brought runners and walkers of all ages to Westfield and raised approximately $150,000 for Imagine.

More than 1,000 individuals registered for this official USATF 5K race. An additional 100 children, ages 10 and younger, participated in a 200-yard Kids Fun Run dash. The event concluded with a Memory Walk, during which more than 200 individuals walked a one-mile route that was lined with signs memorializing loved ones Greta’s Run was an act of honor, an act of mourning, and a remembrance for our families and our community

To the 100+ volunteers who made this event a success.

To our sponsors who underwrote the event so that every dollar raised goes toward providing free grief support for children and families.

Bill S-3330: The Grief Bill

Imagine was honored to host a press conference for The Grief Bill on November 18, 2022. Imagine worked closely with Senator Jon Bramnick (R) and Senator Joe Cryan (D) on this bipartisan bill to provide grief education through Health and Physical Education classes to New Jersey students in grades 8-12. The event was attended by members of the Imagine community who shared stories of their grief journeys and insight into the benefits of including grief education in New Jersey school curricula.

Under the current system, students may find little assistance in dealing with a death “There are 142,000 young people in this state that have lost a parent [or sibling] Digest that for a moment 142,000,” Cryan said “The grief that they go through, the emotions they encounter, how they handle it, what reactions they have, all those things matter The educational process in our schools can make a difference”

With the Grief Bill, students would be instructed on the physical, emotional, and behavioral symptoms of grief; coping mechanisms and techniques for handling grief and loss; and available resources They would learn about loss, grief, supporting themselves, and supporting others In May, the bill passed unanimously in the Senate with a vote of 36-0 The bill was received in the Assembly and referred to the Assembly Education Committee Throughout the Spring, Imagine worked to bring together parents, community members and educators to determine the resources required to support the state of NJ if in fact NJ were to become the first state in the country to pass this significant legislation
