EDITORS PAGE
Welcome to our ‘Cleopatra’ themed issue of Matrimony UK®. In this issue we are exploring the Egyptian origins of make-up. Ancient Egyptians wore makeup for spiritual reasons, as it was believed to appeal to the gods. It was also used to protect the eyes from flies and the sun, and for its perceived magical or spiritual qualities.
Both men and women, across all social classes, used cosmetics in ancient Egypt.
We had so much fun creating the look for our ‘Cleopatra’ Photo shoot and would like to thank the team who took part.
Happy reading!

Behind the Scenes
A lot of blood, sweat and tears (normally of laughter) goes into these photoshoots.
We really enjoyed this particular shoot as we all came together as a group with all ages taking part.
We loved our little ‘flower girl’ who stole the show.
Lottie is on the back cover with Amanda Jane our very own ‘Cleopatra’!
CLEOPATRASHOOT 2025
The beautiful Barn at Upcote leant itself beautifully to the theme of the shoot with it’s vaulted ceiling and warm sandstone walls.
We took the opportunity to utilise every inch of space.

Art and design has always been a passion of mine. As a young girl I remember spending much of my time sketching fashion and design ideas which has eventually led me into my love of jewellery.
I love to create beautiful pieces of jewellery and accessories, experimenting with innovative techniques. I mix vintage charm with modern day trends, the traditional with the contemporary, and I am always on the lookout for fresh new pieces that could be incorporated into my designs.
My bridal collection is based around the concept of the modern day vintage bride, incorporating a harmonious blend of individually sourced vintage pieces with materials such as freshwater pearls, precious and semi precious gems, crystals, lace and mulberry paper flowers.
Each piece is created with passion, skill and attention to detail, making something extraordinary out of the ordinary.
I am very conscious about the impact I have on our environment and I have sourced my materials and packaging from sustainable and recyclable sources.
Hope you enjoy my designs as much as I enjoyed creating them.

Special Feature
Meet Dan Sullivan the Creator of Irregular choice …..
Irregular Choice was created by Dan Sullivan in 1999 as a reason to stand out from the crowd.
Back in the late 90's Dan saw that the footwear market was becoming very neutral and black, yet there was a global demand for something different and individual, something to wear with pride.
Born in London, England, and growing up on the Kings Road in the 70’s during the Punk era, Dan was fortunate enough to travel the world throughout the 70's and 80's with his family.
Whilst his parents developed their own irregular footwear collections, including “Transport” and “Chaos Creators”, Dan got to visit the most amazing and inspirational locations, allowing him to soak in everything that surrounded him.
He had left home by the age of 15 and opened his first shoe shop in Covent Garden at the age of 18, which soon turned into 6 stores, until at 23 he decided to close the stores so he could travel and add to his already extensive knowledge of what the rest of the world had to offer.
During his mid to late 20's Dan chose to go back to the far east to meet with factories and understand the opportunities that were being offered from that part of the world.
“The culture, architecture and foods were big influences for my first collection in 1999, and that’s where I got the inspiration for the split toe shoe, which is still incorporated into my designs today.” Dan Sullivan.
The opportunities that Dan discovered in China allowed for detailed & creative manufacturing, at an affordable price & small quantities. This gave Dan the chance to
combine the resources of the far east with the experiences he had gathered spanning the most creative times, and countries, of his generation.
And from this Irregular Choice was born.
Dan has stuck very determinedly to his philosophy throughout the past 22 years, which is to keep Irregular Choice as something that is not influenced by passing trends, but original and set apart from the crowd.
His fearlessness translates into the design of the shoes, and an Irregular Choice shoe is not like any other you’ll find. Dan doesn’t listen to what’s happening in the fashion industry or what another brand may be doing.
This is what makes Irregular Choice designs completely unique and truthful.
From embellished heels, ornate wood carvings, tiny intricate charms and lavish fabrics, to the memorable colour combinations, everybody has an Irregular Choice favourite shoe or story.
Each year Dan creates over 600 different styles, and is constantly jotting down styles, photos and sketches, it’s an ever expanding creative process reaching to what is now over 10,000 different options.
Irregular Choice has evolved with great strides over the past decade. The brand is now sold through hundreds of stockists around the world, and has nine of its own stores across the globe, with more in the pipeline.
Every Irregular Choice customer has their own favourite designs, and with such a huge collection to choose from each season there is always something to tempt every shoe addict.
Browse our collection for the perfect pair of wedding shoes for brides, bridesmaids and every type of wedding guest! Irregular Choice have been designing fun, unique, and affordable bridal shoes for 20 years, and we have helped make thousands of weddings around the world a bit more ‘all about the shoes’! say i do!
From classic white mid heels laced with glitter and vintage touches, to flower-decked cute platform styles that will give your bouquet a run for its’ money, our bridal range is designed in the UK to be inclusive, with extended larger sizing up to EU46.
Many famous faces from around the world are fans of shoes, here are just a few of them.

I began Sash + Veil in 2013 since discovering how important it is to choose the right accessories to complete your bridal look. You will spend lots of time and often money searching for your wedding dress and so it is very important to choose a veil, and possibly a sash or belt, which compliments that dream dress to perfection.
My passion is detail and each piece I create is made by hand (usually by me) with an emphasis on top quality craftsmanship, unique design and impeccable style.
I have a collection of veils available to buy off the peg or which can be customised to your own choice of length or colour, etc. I can also work with you to design a veil or a sash unique to you.
I have a big airy studio in Colchester, Essex where you can make an appointment to come along and have a chat, see the collection of veils and sashes and have a try-on to see which works best. I have made accessories for brides all over the world including America, Japan, Australia, Sweden, France and Scotland and if you are not close enough to pop in, we can chat via email or Skype. I am always very happy to post out samples and sketches too so you can ensure the colour and fabric is exactly right before I post your veil or sash out to you.

The Egyptians and Make-Up
Ancient Egyptians of both sexes and all classes wore makeup from as early as 6000 BCE, not just for beauty but also for spiritual and practical reasons, including sun protection and warding off evil spirits. Cosmetics, such as black kohl eyeliner and red lipstick made from minerals and fats, were applied using intricate palettes and stored in elaborate containers, which were significant symbols of wealth and social status. Makeup was considered next to godliness, and even burial sites contained cosmetics for the afterlife, indicating their profound significance in Egyptian culture.
The ancient Egyptians regarded beauty as a sign of holiness. Everything they used had a spiritual aspect to it, including cosmetics. Both men and women wore makeup. Traders traded makeup often, especially in the upper classes. In tombs, cosmetic palettes were found buried in gold with the deceased as grave goods, which further emphasized the idea that cosmetics were not only used for aesthetic purposes but rather magical and religious purposes.
The use of cosmetics in ancient Egypt influenced later cultures, and many of the cosmetic practices and techniques, like kohl eyeliner, are still familiar today
The History of Make-Up
Ancient Egyptians are among the first known to use makeup, with both men and women wearing it to enhance beauty and for spiritual reasons, including preparation for the afterlife and appeasing the gods. Popular products included green malachite and black kohl for eye makeup, red ochre for lips and nails, and white powders to lighten the skin. Cosmetics were practical as well, with kohl eyeliner protecting eyes from the sun and dust, and henna used to condition hair and nails.
The two main forms of eye makeup were green eye paint and black kohl. The green eye paint called Udju [ was made of malachite, a copper carbonate pigment. The green malachite came from the mines of Sinai as early as 3000 BC. The black eye-paint called Mesdemet was made from galena, a dark grey ore. Crushed charcoal was also used in this process. The malachite and the galena were crushed and mixed with gum or water to make a paste. Mesdemet, or kohl, was used for lining the eyes and it revealed to bring along potent health benefits in the form of protection from disease, bugs and sun rays. Red ochre clay was ground up and mixed with water to create a paste to paint on the lips and cheeks.
Protection from the Sun and Environment:
The characteristic black kohl eyeliner not only highlighted the eyes but also served as a practical shield against the sun's glare and the dry, dusty desert environment, and may have also helped prevent eye infections.
Egyptians used scented oils and ointments to soften and clean their skin and to mask body odour, which also helped keep the skin hydrated.
Henna was used to dye nails a deep red and condition hair, with some believing it provided good fortune.
Cosmetics were believed to appeal to the gods and were considered a mark of holiness, connecting beauty with divine presence.
Ancient Egyptians believed that maintaining good standards of hygiene and beauty was essential for a successful rebirth into the afterlife, a preparation detailed in the Book of the Dead.
While makeup was available to everyone, elaborate and finely crafted cosmetic containers and applicators were symbols of wealth and social status.
A dark powder made from ingredients like crushed antimony, lead, or galena, used to line the eyes.
Blue and green eye shadows were created from malachite and other mineral-based pigments, often representing fertility and rebirth.
Red ochre was mixed with fat to create red lip and cheek colour.
Used as a dye to colour hair and nails, believed to bring good fortune.

Temperley is a designer who knows how to tell a love story in a way that isn’t overly nostalgic or ultra-feminine. She works a more ethereal, bohemian angle, with a dash of sexiness"
As the original Temperley Bride, Alice’s experience, inspiration and skill are in their element when creating bridal wear. Fresh, bold, timeless – Temperley Bridal is an ethereal fusion of regal romanticism and offbeat Bohemianism, brought to life through the brand’s meticulous skill and craftsmanship.
Each dress is revered as a work of art and each bride is celebrated as an individual soul. The uniting thread that runs through Alice’s creations is a true sense of romance and a bohemian willingness to flout the rules.
Temperley Bridal offers Ready-To-Wear online and in stores, while Made-To-Order and Bespoke options are available by appointment only, both at Somerset and our London Flagship store. More options can be found at our regular Trunk Shows or at one of our worldwide partner stockists.
Isabella Collection
Inspired by mid-century Italian cinema and the glamour of La Dolce Vita, Temperley Bridal unveils the ‘Isabella’ Collection. Channeling the spirit of iconic screen sirens and the golden age of film, blending vintage influences with contemporary sensibilities.
Layered lace capes, intricately embroidered coats, and beadwork replace traditional veils, offering brides bold alternatives that manifest a sense of freedom and individuality. With delicate florals, shimmering embellishments, and fringe details, the pieces embody a sense of glamour, blending nostalgia with a modern, cinematic vision.
Among the collection is the Alice Ruffle Dress, an iconic design that was originally created for Alice herself. This tulle gown, embellished with stunning mirror artwork and silk chiffon godets, embodies a unique fantasy for the bride who seeks to make a statement. Sheer organza ruffles cascade over the shoulder, adding a touch of whimsy and movement, making it an unforgettable bridal option.
“This latest bridal collection is a love letter to romance and nostalgia—where vintage elegance meets modern grace. Each dress tells a story, woven through delicate textures, intricate details, and timeless fabrics, designed to make every bride feel effortlessly beautiful on her special day.”- Alice Temperley
Also among the standouts is the Anita Gown, a soft and flowing piece that combines tonal stitchwork with delicate beadwork, perfectly complemented by the Chiara Coat, which envelops the bride in delicate embroidery and a sweeping train. Together, they offer a romantic yet unexpected pairing.
For those seeking something with a bit more drama, the Arpa Gown delivers. Featuring a fitted corset and off-the-shoulder neckline, this piece is an homage to the glamour of 1950s cinema, with a voluminous skirt that moves with fluidity. Its sheer tulle overlay, detailed with three-dimensional flowers, adds an ethereal layer of texture that feels both modern and nostalgic.
The Amore Gown takes a bold approach with its rich, textured jacquard fabric, adorned with delicate gold cord work and 3D floral appliqué. This gown, available in both gold and white, reinterprets bridal opulence with a design that feels both fresh and bold.
Each piece within the Isabella collection offers versatile options for the bride who desires something more than the conventional. Carefully crafted to allow the wearer to express individuality and style on one of the most important days of their life, the collection is a celebration of elegance, modernity, and cinematic glamour.
Available for appointments from September only.

French Collection by Wendy Makin UK
“Designed by famed Bridal Designer Wendy Makin, the french collection fuses modern elements with classic styling and luxe fabric, perfect for the contemporary romantic bride. Our bridal collection plays on contrasts of the delicate, bold, daring and dainty by using exquisite laces, ornate beading, floaty tulles and luxurious crepe.
Taking over from the 'Belladonna Bridal' collection starting in 1999, The french collection philosophy is forged from the Wendy Makin beliefs of making brides beautiful. To do this the team works tirelessly with retailers and brides honing the designs and developing the style of the collection. From this co-operation the Wendy Makin team has developed a much more wearable gown. Their accent is now on comfort for the bride in a more wearable gown focused on fit and shape rather than too much boning and structure which makes the gowns too heavy and uncomfortable.
A lot of this development has also come from the labels reputation for doing “Destination Gowns” very well. Many of the french collection gowns are extremely popular with brides getting married at a destination such as the Whitsundays, Fiji, the Bahama’s or even Positano in Italy. The fabrics and construction make them perfect for taking out of your suitcase to wear for your wedding with the minimum of fuss.
From Australia through New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Ireland, the french collection by Wendy Makin is recognised for its playful design approach and straight forward philosophy. From church wedding to a rustic woodlands affair the collection has a wedding dress to suit all wedding occasions”.
Introducing our Crazy for You Collection which was inspired by the romantic Gershwin musical and Eliza Jane Howell is the brand where sartorial history meets avant-garde timeless sophistication. Welcome to Bohemian Bakery!
I’m Marta and cake design is my passion.
In 2018 I decided to turn my long-lost dream into reality and started creating bespoke cakes as a full time venture.
After lots of consideration and experimenting I chose to follow the niche I’m most passionate about - boho, from which Bohemian Bakery was born!
I design and create bespoke, unique bakes with the finest attention to detail. I love to hear your ideas, likes and dislikes and any secrets that I can turn into reality!
My love of food began when I was quite young; I grew up on a smallholding in rural Gloucestershire and as soon as I could stand on a stool I would help my mum in the kitchen making bread, cakes and all sorts of other delicious things.
When I was 18 years old I completed a year long diploma course at Leith's School of Food & Wine and that's when my passion for food blossomed.
Since my year at the renowned cookery school in London, I have embarked on a diverse career in food. My experience has included:
Working as a private chef in numerous prestigious residences in the UK & Europe;
Setting up, running and then selling a thriving cafe-deli business;
Touring the UK with numerous music artists as a pastry chef;Chefing in an independant Michelin recommended restaurant; tside catering for weddings, private functions, shooting lodges; and much more.
Setting up Home Farm Kitchen was my way of getting back to work & using my skills in a professional capacity again after taking a few years out to be a full time mum.
I live in Eastnor, in the beautiful Herefordshire countryside, with my husband & our 4 boys. We love outdoor life, particularly walking, biking, campfires and obviously cake!

Despite having a job that saw me travelling all over the world running large projects, I discovered a passion for cake decorating and tuition. I tried enrolling in classes but realised there was lack of them at the level I wished to study, having to essentially teach myself. Having realised there was a shortage of good tutors and cake designers, in 2010
The Nuthouse Bakery was born and has since gone from strength to strength.
As well as providing tuition in cake making and decorating, I also create stylish, elegant and beautiful cakes and cupcakes for all occasions, from weddings to corporate events. Our award-winning designs not only look fabulous but taste delightful too. Working from home, I offer everything from initial consultation and design, through to delivery and staging of your cakes at your venue.
Established in 2011 and run by Laura Nolan, The Nuthouse Bakery is located in Dudley, West Midlands, and also serves the surrounding counties of Worcestershire, Staffordshire, Shropshire, and Warwickshire.
I am known for my stylish and elegant wedding cakes, as well as being a highly regarded tutor, winning numerous awards. Many of my students have gone on to become prize-winners in their own right, creating their own successful businesses.

CHURCH WEDDING LEGAL REQUIREMENTS
In marriage you take on a whole new legal status. The vicar knows how to advise and prepare you for your wedding day and everything must comply with all relevant UK and Church of England laws. These are the main legal points to consider before you begin planning:-
If you are under 18 years old you will need your parents’ consent to marry and by law you can not be married in the UK until you are 16.
Although same sex-marriage legislation is now in force, it remains the case that it is not legally possible for same-sex couples to marry in the Church of England.
It’s possible to get married in a church that’s away from where you live if you have a certain kind of connection with it. You may be legally connected to a number of churches in different ways.
The wedding must take place between 8am and 6pm on any day.
There are special guidelines on marriage in the church if you are divorced. There may well be a way forward, but you will need to talk your Vicar about your situation to explore the possibilities for you.
Most Church of England marriages will require banns to be published before the wedding can take place. You won’t need to arrange banns until about four months before your wedding date.
If there is not enough notice given for the banns to be read before the marriage is due to take place, or in the case of the marriage of people who are not nationals of a country within the European Economic Area, or if one or both of you does not live in England or Wales, it is recommended that the Licence procedure be used rather than banns.
There are some circumstances in which you may need a Special Licence, Common Licence or a Superintendent Registrar’s Certificate to marry in church. Your vicar will let you know if these apply to you.
Costs of a Church Wedding
● All couples will need to show the vicar their passport as proof of nationality. If you don’t have a passport, there are other documents which would be acceptable, so ask your vicar about this.
● If either or both of you are divorced, you will need to bring your decree absolute for the vicar to see.
● You may also be asked to provide evidence of your connection to the church, such as utility bills which show you live or have lived in the parish, or your parents’ marriage certificate if they were married there, for example. Your vicar will guide you on acceptable documents for your particular connection.
There is a required legal fee for marrying in a church. In 2021* it costs £541 if you marry away from where you live and £495 if you marry in your home parish. This is set by the Church of England nationally and is the same for every church.
This basic legal fee includes the cost of the vicar, the church, calling your banns, a banns certificate, the marriage certificate, lighting and all administration.
This required fee has ancient origins and ensures your church can maintain essential services like weddings, christenings, funerals and all kinds of other ministries for you and your community.
The statutory wedding fee doesn’t include extras you may choose or decline, such as:-
who ensures the church is warm, clean and tidy for your wedding and can help with handing out Orders of Service and hymn books etc. They can assist with disability access if needed by your guests and guide people to find their seats, toilets or crèche if there is one. They can be indispensable in larger churches, freeing up the vicar to give their full attention to you and the wedding service.
The vicar will let you know if this applies to your wedding. Having an organist, choir or bell-ringers – these extra staff will all need to be booked in advance. Sometimes, the church may ask for a deposit to secure these bookings.
Bear in mind that if your wedding is filmed, musicians like the organist can request an increase in their fee to take into account professional performing rights. Check with the church what the local arrangements are.
– some churches have a local flower arranger who can help you with the flower displays in church.
Extra copies of the marriage certificate. You do not have to have any of these extras, but many couples are keen to have at least some. If you choose them, they will cost extra. The costs for each will be at your church’s local rate.
Talk to your vicar early on about what the total cost of your wedding is likely to be. It is good practice for the church to provide you with an itemised quote before your wedding so that you can see exactly what you will be paying for.
REGISTRY OFFICE WEDDINGS
If the thought of a big church wedding doesn’t appeal to you, then why not consider getting married in a registry office.
In the UK most people think that registry offices are just used to register births, marriages and deaths but they are also used for marriage ceremonies as well. Fees are often lower than a church wedding. At the time of publication The cost of hiring a room in a registry office starts from around £57+ for a standard ceremony. There is also a fee involved for giving notice which is around £35-£50 per person. Your marriage certificate will cost around £4 on the day or £10 should you arrange to fetch it afterwards.
The rules on who can get married in a registry office are the same as who can get married everywhere else in the UK.
To be legally married in the UK, you and your partner must be at least 16 years old (although in England and Wales, if either of you are under 18 your parents must give their consent), and you must not be closely related.
As romantic as it might sound to get married with no one around but the two of you, you sadly can’t say “I do” in the absence of witnesses.
Not only must your marriage be conducted by a person (or in the presence of a person) authorised to register marriages in the district, but you must also have at least two witnesses.
The two witnesses must witness the ceremony before signing at the time of marriage. Witnesses don’t legally have to be of a certain age but you should check with the person marrying you if they have an age limit on who they will accept. And here’s a snippet of interesting information … you don’t actually have to know your witnesses!
Registry offices are normally decorated with flowers pre-ceremony, but there’s nothing to stop you from arranging your own simple floral display or decorations to bring along with you. Bear in mind that there may be other weddings held in the room on the same day as your wedding.
The Registrar will normally ask you when you go in to fill out the preliminary forms etc if there is any particular song or piece of music that you wish to walk into the room or any readings or poems you wish to use. Please be aware that hymns and bible readings are not allowed.
It’s your day so we would say anything goes. If you have always dreamed of a white wedding with all the frills then go for it. Alternatively if you want it to be slightly more low key you could wear a beautiful flowing spring/summer dress with your groom in a tailored suit. The skies the limit! We’ve collated some dresses suitable for a Registry Office wedding.

Deciding to make a public commitment to another person is a wonderful, exciting and indeed slightly scary time. There are so many decisions – so many choices and of course you want it to be perfect. But what does that actually look like to you? Whatever your vision I can help you to make it happen.
Using me to create and conduct your ceremony frees you up to have the day of your dreams at whatever venue you chose, at whatever time you want, with whatever theme you love and including everything that is meaningful to you. My ceremonies are relaxed and informal with your personal story at the very heart. I enjoy finding ways to involve your family and friends in the ceremony, finding ways for them to share their love and support for you so they feel part of the day rather than just sitting there listening to words they have heard many times before.
HANDFASTING
There is some dispute over the exact origins of the handfasting ritual but it is often believed to be a Pagan ritual that predated Christianity, and there are certainly examples of handbinding or fasting ceremonies from many different countries and cultures. Many modern Pagans will have a Handfasting as their complete ceremony but increasing numbers of people are choosing to include this ritual within their wedding ceremony because it brings a certain spiritual dimension to the day. It is originally believed to have been a commitment to live together as a married couple for a year and a day after which the couple would choose to stay together and make a permanent commitment or ‘untie the knots’ and go their separate ways.
The binding of the hands is done by wrapping coloured ribbons or cords around the clasped hands of the couple (either right hand to right hand or both hands crossed). Each of the colours have their own meaning, and bring their own focus to the commitments that the couple are choosing to make, and the relevance of each colour choose will be different to each couple. As each coloured ribbon is wound around the hands the couple are asked to make promises to each other about how they intend to live their lives together, how they will behave towards each other.

Unity Sand Ceremony
The Unity Sand Ceremony is often seen as one of the more recent additions to the wedding ritual portfolio. However, there is a theory that links it back to traditional Hawaiian weddings which take place on the beach and where the couple take hands of sand and pour them into a vessel to mark their commitment. There also seems to be a possible link with sand colouring which is used in Native American healing rituals and which could easily have evolved to form part of a wedding or commitment.
Whatever the origins the symbolism of the unity sand ceremony is beautiful, meaningful and very personal. At its heart it is a simple ceremony – the couple chose a colour of sand each and then take it in turns to pour the sand into a glass vessel. The sand forms layers of colour in an abstract design that would be impossible to replicate. The couple continue to pour until the vessel is completely full and is sealed.
The meaning of the ritual can be quite complicated. Each of the colours used can symbolise different traits or gifts which the couple feel are important to have in a marriage (though some couples just chose their favourite colours). Each of the coloured sands stays independent and unique, true to itself and able to stand alone. However, bringing the two colours together creates a unique and beautiful pattern which will last eternally. Its impossible to really identify where the one colour finishes and the next starts at each layer, and if you tried to pull the two
colours of sand apart it would be impossible. Likewise the couple remain two individual people but as their commitment deepen and grows the distance between them becomes less distinct, and it is impossible to separate them. They create something even more beautiful together than they do separately.
I find this quite a flexible ritual as there is no restriction to the container that is used apart from it needing to be transparent and able to be sealed when completely full. More people can be involved, which works wonderfully if there are children in the partnership – they can have their own colours to and are bound together with the love of their parents. You can involve Mums and Dads, grandparents or other people who are significant to the couple. You can remember people who have died by including a colour for them - I have used it when there has been a baby who died and a parent on a separate occasion. I have done multiple vessels at the same time, once so that the children had their own heart bottle which included their mum’s sand (as she was battling a terminal illness) and again as part of a Family Ceremony where two children were being adopted.
The important thing with any ceremony or ritual is that it has meaning for the people involved and that it should be moulded so that it is about them, reflecting their relationship, their situation, their interests, passions and beliefs.

Although celebrant-led weddings and other ceremonies are very much about you, this page is all about musician and professional celebrant - Paul Bytheway
I often get asked why I became a celebrant. I guess there are a few factors, including turning 40 and starting a family.
I was a high school teacher for 10 years, then I was a touring musician, now I'm a trained couples celebrant.
It's been a funny old journeyThe content of a celebrant-led wedding ceremony is written to completely represent you as a couple. We would have a 'getting to know you' meeting in which you take me through all the intricacies of your relationship and what makes you such a unique couple. It's then my job to turn this into a memorable and unique script.
Along with the bespoke wording of the ceremony, we could also choose to include memorable symbolic actions such as a handfasting ceremony or 'jumping the broom'. Add in some readings from friends and family (which could have a religious element if you wish), or activities to get all your guests involved.

7 Wedding Traditions Making a Comeback
This tradition is said to bring the couple wealth and happiness during their life together, and was originally a sign that the bride’s father had sent the couple well wishes. This could be quite uncomfortable so why not glue an old sixpence to the bottom of your wedding shoe.
Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue” is an age-old Victorian rhyme. Something old represents the link with the bride’s family and the past. Many brides choose to wear a piece of family jewellery or their mother or grandmother’s wedding dress. Something new represents good fortune and success in the bride’s new life. The wedding dress often symbolises the new item, or perhaps the bride’s shoes.
reminds the bride that her family and friends will be there for her when help is needed. The borrowed object might be something small, such as lace handkerchief or a hair pin.
The something blue symbolises faithfulness and loyalty. The tradition dates back to biblical times when blue represented purity. Often, the bride’s garter has a blue ribbon on it, making that the blue item. This custom traces its roots back to Rome. Fearing evil spirits were jealous of her happiness, the bride would wear a veil down the aisle to disguise herself from them and avoid any ill will they wished to bring upon her.
Sprinkling petals down the Aisle - At the ceremony, the bride would also walk down the aisle with the wedding party, closely followed by a flower girl who would sprinkle the floor with petals — this signifies a happy route for the couple once they’re married.
Why is it lucky to have a chimney sweep at a wedding?
A lucky chimney sweep at a wedding is a Victorian tradition that dates back about 260 years ago when a chimney sweep helped to calm the bolting horses on the carriage of King George III. The king was so grateful to the sweep that he announced a Royal Decree saying that all chimney sweeps were lucky. The tradition is making a comeback with many brides wishing to be photographed alongside a chimney sweep for luck.
- Ancient wedding rituals involved church bells tolling at the beginning or end of a wedding to keep evil spirits at bay. Over time, weddings gradually moved out of churches to places that the bride and groom deemed most fit which, in turn, made the ritual of the ringing of wedding bells obsolete. However, the original Celtic ritual of wedding bells had a greater significance for newlyweds. The ritual involved ringing smaller bells at the end of the wedding. Additionally, these bells were brought by the couple to their new home to keep negativity away from their marriage.

The Lucky Sweep booking is often bought as a surprise for the newlyweds by family or friends.
I hide out of sight and appear at an appropriate time to greet the newly married couple and explain the tradition of a Lucky Sweep to them before presenting them with the lucky sweeps' handmade gift.
I am then available for formal photographs with the newly weds and also informal photos with the other guests.
We have found on most bookings that I spend around an hour with the married couple and guests for formal and informal photographs which naturally leads us to the time for guests being seated for the wedding breakfast. I am not on a timescale though and as we only accept one booking per day.
Following an old tradition, chimney sweeps were asked to attend weddings as it was believed they would bring good luck to the newlyweds.
In Great Britain it's considered lucky to see a chimney sweep on your wedding day. It is believed Chimney Sweeps bring good luck, wealth, and happiness.
Chimney sweeps are often requested to attend weddings to bring Good Luck to the newly weds.
Traditionally this is a gift arranged by a friend or relative.
In pursuance of this tradition Mark Fenton Sweep Services are proud to offer a Lucky Sweep Service for weddings.

There are many customs and traditions around death, but telling the bees is my favourite. Telling the bees of a death in a family is a tradition that has been practised in many European countries, but has been particularly common in England. Bees have long been considered important creatures, and in mythology were considered as the bridge between the underworld and natural world. For centuries bees have been treated as important members of a beekeeper's family, and it has been traditional to ensure that bees have been informed of important events such as deaths.
It was believed that if the bees had not been formally informed of a death they may stop producing honey, leave the hive or die themselves. Telling the bees could take many forms, from singing to the bees, knocking on the hive to get the bees' attention and making an announcement or draping the hives in black cloth. When a beekeeper had died it was customary for food from the funeral wake to be given to the bees, and they would be put into mourning for their deceased master.
Although telling the bees was usually associated with a death, bees were also often told of weddings and provided with wedding cake. In some areas newlyweds were expected to introduce themselves to the bees, or else their marriage would suffer . We chose the name Go tell the bees to remember this great tradition, as a nod to the importance of living alongside our natural world and because bees are awesome.

I take on weddings of all sizes & budgets, from small, simple bouquets through to full event styling and installations across the UK. I am recognisably bold and fearless when uniting blooms, colours and textures, basing every design on how I can best represent your personalities and spirit as a couple.
I encourage our couples to embrace seasonal and locally grown flowers wherever possible and consider interesting minimalist design alternatives and the incorporation of dried everlasting flowers and foliages. I can completely transform your day and venue by adding as little or as much beautiful foliage and flowers as you wish.
Working on a wedding is an exceptionally personal process. Starting with an initial consultation, in person, by phone, or on a video call, we can discuss your day fully before I come up with the design proposal and inspiration boards with various options and possibilities for your flowers and styling. An estimate of prices will also be given at this point too.
When it comes to wedding florals, budget is a very important factor in bringing your vision to life. An enormous amount of time, labour and equipment costs are involved in bridal bouquets, arrangements and event installations. All arrangements are priced according to size, shape, flower choice, colours, amounts and availability and are priced according to your requirements. Delivery charges apply, so if possible, please include all locations and delivery requirements at the time of

Based in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, Nicola is a freelance professional specialising in creative, documentary-style wedding photography. Voted ‘Wedding Photographer of the Year – 2022’ by Matrimony Magazine UK, she has been featured in several national magazines and most recently produced the photography for Matrimony Magazine UK’s Spring/Summer ‘23 edition front cover and feature article. Nicola also has a passion for all things equine.
With a background in art and design, she brings a natural creative flair to her photography. Nicola is a self-proclaimed camera-phobic and is frequently chosen by couples who prefer her relaxed, storytelling approach to wedding photography and the authentic, emotive images she produces.
I am from Brazil but left home young to go and see the World with my own eyes and with a camera in my hands. A loving hobby turned into a profession and I am a true believer in the power of images. A beautiful photo ensures that not only the memory but also the emotion attached lives on forever.
Whenever I can I am outdoors or travelling and I always have a camera to hand. I love meeting new people along the way and even more when I get to learn about them, which is why in my craft lies a deep appreciation for storytelling. Whether it's the radiant love shared in a wedding, the cherished bonding moments of a family, the individual essence captured in a portrait, or the vibrant personality of a brand and the essence of its products, I am committed to
immortalising these narratives in timeless imagery and compelling videos.
What sets my approach apart is not just the technical finesse, the understanding of light and shadow or artistic vision, but the personal connection I cultivate with each client. I believe that understanding your vision, your aspirations and your story is crucial in crafting images that resonate deeply with you. That's why I love the opportunity to sit down with you, brainstorm ideas, and dive into the nuances of your celebration plans, image daydreams or branding concepts. Together, we'll weave magic into every frame, ensuring that the resulting images not only meet but exceed your expectations.

ABOUT ME
Welcome to the world of timeless moments, where every glance, every smile, and every shared breath tells a unique story. I am Dean Jones, a passionate wedding photographer nestled in the heart of Herefordshire, UK, dedicated to capturing the essence of your special day through relaxed and natural storytelling photographs.
For me, photography is not just a profession; it’s a journey into the beautiful tapestry of love, emotion, and connection. With a keen eye for detail and a heart attuned to the subtle nuances of your love story, I embark on a mission to freeze those fleeting moments that make your wedding day truly unforgettable.
My approach is all about creating a comfortable and laid-back atmosphere, allowing you to be your authentic selves. I believe that the most magical moments unfold when you’re at ease, surrounded by the people you love. From the gentle exchange of vows to the laughter shared during candid moments, I am there to document it all with an unobtrusive yet attentive presence.
With Herefordshire as my backdrop, I draw inspiration from the scenic beauty that surrounds us. Whether your wedding is set against the backdrop of rolling hills, picturesque gardens, or an intimate venue, I strive to encapsulate the unique charm of your chosen location in each frame.
As a storyteller with a camera, I am committed to weaving together the narrative of your love story. Your wedding day is a chapter in the book of your life, and my mission is to capture it in a way that you can revisit and cherish for years to come. The result? A collection of photographs that reflect the genuine emotions, the shared laughter, and the profound love that binds you and your partner.
Thank you for considering me to be a part of your special day. I look forward to creating timeless memories with you, one click at a time.
I'm Tom, my wedding photography style is part documentary, part fine art. Capturing natural relaxed moments to treasure forever.
In Cornwall we have so many stunning locations, beaches, manor house’s, woodlands, cliffs, the list goes on! Wherever you choose to have your wedding, I’ll be there with you every step of the way. Checking out the venue beforehand to get the best locations. Often with you as a couple for our pre-wedding shoot.
What is documentary/reportage photography?
Documentary or reportage style is a fancy way of saying that I float round, almost invisibly, capturing real moments as they happen. The odd glance, hand hold or relative wiping away a happy tear. Moments that would otherwise be
left purely to memory are captured to be remembered and treasured for a lifetime.
What is fine art photography?
Fine art photography covers a huge range of things on your wedding day. It could be a close up of a small detail like the ribbons on a wedding dress or a lovingly hand made table decoration. It could also be a wide shot of you as a couple with the sea/sky/beach/house/gardens as a stunning backdrop. The photos that you have printed in your album or displayed on your wall as a canvas to enjoy everyday.
All that aside, the thing I love most about photographing weddings is seeing the love and joy on everyone’s faces. It’s your day, I’m just there to give you a helping hand remembering it.

A GUIDE TO WEDDING STATIONERY
Looking for your wedding stationery can be quite daunting - there are just so many styles out there.
To try and help you through the ‘minefield’ of choices we have compiled a list of just of the styles out there.
This is a decorative element that wraps around the invitation. These can be made of fabric, paper, ribbon or embellishments.
Debossing on invitations is where a design or element is pressed into the paper in a similar way to letterpressing. Embossing is raising a design or element on the paper.
This process is time consuming and expensive. Text is etched/engraved on to a plate that is then filled with ink and transferred on to paper.
Another element of engraving invitations can be engraving on wood, acrylic and or paper. These are a most cost effective process of engraving invitations.
If you want to add a bit of bling to your invitations, foil stamping is key! This technique requires a design to be made into a metal plate, that then presses and transfers metallic foils on to paper.
This can be inexpensive if large quantities are required, and if you have one design to be foiled. It becomes costly if you require different plates to be made for more designs.
Laser cutting paper is a cost effective and simple way to add unique and custom design elements to your invitations. Using laser cutting means that you can incorporate intricate patterns, like lace, in to your stationery. Pocketed invitations are also created using laser cutting!
This process involves creating a plate which is inked and then transferred on to paper.
With a background and a degree in Graphic Design, and an extremely artistic family I always knew I would love to create unique and beautiful designs for people in one way or another.
I got married mid-2011 to my wonderful husband; this was my first experience of wedding invitation design and I loved it. Soon after I started work at a local printers and designed many different kinds of wedding stationery for customers but couldn’t shake the feeling that I wanted more time and freedom to share my ideas and love for the wedding industry in my own unique way, and so Bluebird Wedding Stationery was born!
It was my aim to create an alternative to the mass produced wedding stationery that you can find all over the net, and to offer a personal, friendly and worry free service as I know from experience how stressful organising a wedding can be!

Designed in the 1740s as a pleasure garden for holding intimate garden parties, this hidden valley is now the country's only surviving rococo garden.
Painswick Rococo Garden is set in a hidden Cotswold valley and dates from Georgian times. Over the last 30 years it has been restored to its original layout as depicted in a painting dated 1748. The Garden now allows you to step back into the sensual early 18th century, when gardens were becoming theatrical and romantic backdrops for entertaining guests. During the Rococo period, home owners competed amongst themselves to create flamboyant designs and sought to visually surprise their visitors with architecture and vistas rather than the horticultural unusual.
Here at Painswick, contemporary follies nestle next to dramatic views and woodland walks. We are particularly proud of our large kitchen garden which was created right in the middle of the original design layout. We grow many forms of heritage fruit and vegetables.
The Garden can also offer an unusual and romantic setting for civil weddings and partnership ceremonies. www.painswickrococcogardens.co.uk

Based in Derbyshire, we serve the Midlands and further afield and provide a delivery, set up and styling service (if required – very happy to work with other stylists as we focus on the bigger pieces) and can source other industry supplier types too.

About Us
There are two stunning venues to choose from to hold your ceremony:
Firstly, there is The Lodge for weddings of more than 60-day guests. Alternatively we also offer our new cabin, Rhodri’s by the Lake, for smaller intimate ceremonies of up to 40. Both venues are situated on the edge of our five-acre lake.
The epitome of elegance and charm, the Lodge consists of two floors. This creates a lovely transition throughout your day. Licenced for civil weddings and partnerships, the ceremony takes place in the Oakroom. Whereas your wedding breakfast takes place in the Lakeside room.
Alternatively, Rhodri’s is all on one floor, making it a perfect location for a smaller gathering. Both venues will make your special day one you’ll remember forever.
Canada Lodge and Lake near Cardiff boasts a dedicated and expert team of planners. We are all on hand to help you fulfil all of your requirements for your special day.
