Communities of healed people, with resilience, stability and creativity, fulfil their potential, while creating spaces for others to do the same.
To support people’s healing, especially children’s, from trauma through art.
We achieve our vision and mission statement through the following strategies:
Capacitate and support CAFs to deliver art therapeutic classes to children in disadvantaged and under-resourced communities.
Coach and support selected CAFs in establishing and strengthening their autonomous initiatives, including social enterprises. 1 2 3 4 5
Demonstrate the BAP Method at ACV, providing art therapeutic after-school and other specialised sessions to beneficiaries from various communities.
Provide a specialised Love Bugs Programme to improve the stability of severely neglected children and build a healthy rhythm and routine through art to enable them to function in a formal school environment.
Design and deliver an annual art campaign to explore a contextual topic, culminating in an annual art exhibition.
We implement our strategies through the following programmes:
Community Art Facilitator (CAF) Programme
Heart For Art Programme
Love Bugs Programme
BAP has been on a wonderful journey of consolidation and expansion during 2023 We have successfully ensured depth and quality in all our programmes, while partnering with other organisations to bring Community Art Facilitator (CAF) training and mentoring to other sectors and another province In 2023, twelve CAFs who work with youth in the field of life skills and vocational training were trained in partnership with the Kolping Society of South Africa Eighteen CAFs working in organisations serving children and youth were trained in the Northern Cape Province in partnership with Rural Development Support Programme. Two more CAFs based in the Gauteng Province joined Project Cocoon and received specialist coaching and training to support them in establishing and strengthening their own community art organisations. Five CAFs based in the Gauteng Province attended our Michaelmas Conference.
In June 2023 we tragically lost our lead Love Bugs Facilitator, Faika Green, who played a key role in developing our effective Love Bugs Programme model Faika will always be remembered and honoured by all at BAP for the skill, passion and commitment she brought to her work with the Love Bugs We were fortunate to have a strong team of two skilled CAFs, trained by Faika, to continue Faika’s work in the Love Bugs Programme The second half of 2023 was a time of mourning and adjustment for the BAP Team
There was also much to celebrate in 2023 The Cruelty and Compassion Art Campaign culminated in an annual exhibition showcasing over 300 children’s art works which was held at both the Garden’s Shopping Centre and The Westin Hotel at the foreshore in Cape Town
The Michaelmas Conference on the theme Celebration of Life was attended by 64 Community Art Facilitators, BAP Partners and BAP Team, who together explored the importance of remembering that life and people are full of beauty and wonder The Westin Hotel partnered with BAP for their Mandela Day Programme and fully refurbished the interior of our Art Centre in Vrygrond We completed a Train the Trainer Programme, led by BAP’s founder Angela Katschke, with five people trained as Early Beginnings CAF Foundational Training Module trainers. We hosted CAF Excursions & Networking events at the Iziko Museum and Zeitz Museum for Contemporary African Art. We partnered with the Vrygrond Community Development Trust to provide additional support for Love Bugs in accessing legal documents and school application assistance and Love Bugs Alumni with school essentials through the generosity of a new funding partner. In December we hosted an end of year celebration for all the children who attend programmes at our Art Centre Over 260 children attended the day of fun, laughter, games, delicious food and treats
2023 was a year of many opportunities and some challenges which tested the resilience of our BAP Team and showed us what a creative, strong and adaptable team we are
In this Annual Report we want to do more than just report on our work – we want to share our work with you We have included four Art Therapeutic Activity Sheets in the centre of this Annual Report –two suitable for children and two suitable for anyone 14 years and older We invite you and the children & young people you know to explore the exercises in these Activity Sheets so you can get a feel for what we do Enjoy the experience!
Regards
Jane, Gardie, Zaid and Dirk
2023 was a year of many opportunities and some challenges which tested the resilience of our BAP Team and showed us what a creative, strong and adaptable team we are.
Leadership and Management Team
As the outgoing Chairperson it is my pleasure to reflect on the past year but also touch on several key areas of work that goes beyond the current year under review
The leadership transition process
I am pleased to report that the transition process has been completed and the new Director has continued to build on the legacy of the founding Director, Angela Katschke. One of my key tasks was to ensure an effective leadership transition and whilst I cannot say it was all smooth the end result is a well functioning organisation that has a clear plan for its future growth and sustainability. BAP’s contract with Angela Katschke as an Agiomondo Development Worker providing consultancy support to BAP during the leadership transition ended at the end of 2023 BAP thanks Angela for all she did to support the work of BAP during the leadership transition
The leadership succession plan
The organisation had the foresight to put a clear leadership succession plan in place as well as a structure to support the leadership transition I am pleased to announce that this process has been completed Jane De Sousa brings her own brand of leadership to the organisation and has put systems and processes in place to serve both the work and the people who drive it She has set and achieved targets consistently and despite the tough funding environment has steadily increased the number of funders and partners In 2023 BAP raised sufficient funds to meet all budget requirements and this is in due in large part to Jane’s tireless work
The BAP Board has been firmly established and has its full complement of members who bring relevant expertise to the organisation and who are passionate about the work.
Although funding has been an ongoing concern the organisation has shown a consistent upward trend in terms of bringing new partners on Board. There is a clear fundraising strategy in place and the current Executive Director and Management Team have already secured 72% of the total budget required for 2024.
The organization continues to receive clean audits for the use of all funds and under the good management of the Operations Director Gardie Judge and Finance & PMEL Manager Dirk Stassen and the watchful eye of BAP’s Treasurer, Karen Morris, I have no doubt that this will continue.
It has been a privilege serving as the Chairperson of an organisation that serves the children of this country and working with the amazing people that make this happen through their commitment, passion and compassion It is my fervent wish that the organisation continues to flourish and grow in all parts of this beautiful country
Lastly and most importantly I want to acknowledge the work of Angela Katschke, the founder of BAP for her dedication and passion for this work I know that the team will continue to build on your legacy and take BAP to new heights
Dr Rama Naidu, Chairperson

The Butterfly Art project is a registered Non-profit, Public Benefit (Section 18A) and BBBEE Level 1 organisation We support people’s healing, especially children’s, from trauma through art, and helping to build communities of healed people, with resilience, stability and creativity, who fulfil their potential, while creating spaces for others to do the same BAP trains and supports Community Art Facilitators (CAFs) to provide art therapeutic classes to children in under-resourced communities in the Western Cape, Gauteng, Northern Cape and KwaZulu Natal Provinces Children in underresourced communities experience higher levels of stress and are at higher risk of experiencing trauma and require help in learning how to process stress and heal
Children and youth living in under-resourced communities in South Africa have limited access to art which can impede their creative development and experience multiple vulnerabilities Art supports creative development, essential for the healthy development of fine motor skills, hand eye coordination, problem solving and decision making skills in children Art has powerful healing qualities, particularly when provided by capacitated facilitators in safe learning spaces, and assists children and youth to process stress and heal from trauma in healthy ways. BAP's methodology enables children and youth to explore and experience their creativity, while facilitating stability and healing through art.
At our Art Centre in Vrygrond, we work directly with children and youth, both testing and showcasing our methodology Our Heart For Art Programme provides after school art classes with a therapeutic element to children from Grades 3 –12 Our Love Bugs Programme stabilises severely neglected children not in school aged 5 – 12 years old, increasing their school readiness
Through our Community Art Facilitators (CAFs) Programme we support through training and mentoring the growth and strengthening of a CAF movement in communities in South Africa, providing CAFs with the skills and resilience they need to facilitate art classes with a therapeutic element with the children and youth in their communities
BAP´s Theory of Change illustrates the journey towards stability through art for both the children and adults with whom we work

Express your emotions through art with just a pen and markers. No skill needeD just let your feelings guide your hand. Suitable for 14 years and older
Find a quiet space Take a deep breath and tune into your emotions Use a pen/fineliner to freely doodle on the paper, letting your emotions guide the lines and shapes (you can keep your eyes closed if you like). Using colour markers or kokis, fill in any shapes and colour in your doodle, choosing colours that reflect your emotions or what they mean to you. Add layers and details to your doodle, embracing imperfections as part of the process. Step back and observe your creation. Reflect on how it represents your emotions
