While at Butler, Art + Design and English double major MEGAN TRUE had the opportunity to complete three internships—one at the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites—and the other two at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields. She also conducted research during the Butler Summer Institute, and later presented the research at several conferences and was even published in an academic journal. She’s now pursuing her Master’s in Museum Studies at The George Washington University in Washington, DC. “My internship experiences played a key role in my admission to my master’s program. And my experiences at Butler in general without a doubt helped get me to where I am today.”

Whatever you’re interested in, there’s no teacher like experience.

That’s why we stress the importance of internships and hands-on learning. In fact, more than 75 percent of Butler students complete one or more internships for academic credit, and all business students complete two. That way, when you find your dream job, you’ll have the valuable experience— inside the classroom and out in the field—that employers desire most in a job candidate.

There are colleges where you can spend four years and not know there’s a world outside campus. Butler isn’t one of those places. We’ve built community into the curriculum. Both our Indianapolis Community Requirement and Social Justice and Diversity courses give you a deeper look into your home in Indianapolis and encourage connection with the people and places throughout the city. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself volunteering long after these classes are done. Because when you get to know Indy, you’ll want to be a part of it.

100% of Butler students actively engage in partnerships in the Indianapolis community through the Indianapolis Community Requirement that is part of Butler’s Core Curriculum. 6

Math Education major Maddie Jacobson completed her Indianapolis Community Requirement (ICR) as a firstyear student through a class called Making a Difference in the World. Through that class, she volunteered at A Caring Place—an adult daycare center—and quickly enjoyed spending time with a group of elderly people who had physical and cognitive impairments. After finishing her course, she continues to volunteer at the Center, and now serves as an Advocate for Community Engagement, helping to coordinate students’ volunteer hours and facilitating the relationship between the Center and Butler.

“My experience with the ICR greatly impacted growth in my personal confidence. The participants at A Caring Place made me feel welcomed, loved, and appreciated. They served me as I was serving them,” –Maddie Jacobson

SAM ROYAL, EROMO ALIGBE, KAMERON LEISURE, GERALYN MILLER, AND MAYA GRANDSTAFF all enrolled in the Engineering Projects in Community Services (EPICS) program, which allows students to form teams and develop cutting-edge software for local non-profit organizations. This team, paired with Butler’s Theatre Department, worked to develop a website where users can search for specific garments by size, color, and style while finding the garments’ locations in the tall hanging racks. Directors, show designers, and outside clients looking to rent costumes can access the massive inventory from anywhere. And, Royal says that while he didn’t expect sifting through costumes would help his career at first, a recent job interview proved otherwise when the recruiter was particularly interested in his EPICS work.

Whatever your major, you’ll have many opportunities to conduct real research and participate in experiential learning opportunities. Astronomy majors peer into space from our own Holcomb Observatory and from telescopes in Chile and the Canary Islands. Psychology students present their research alongside professors at national conferences in Washington, DC, and some students travel all the way to Panama to study tropical marine biology with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. Never stop asking questions, because at Butler, you’ll be able to explore whatever fascinates you.

What will you discover?

MIKAYLA EATON ’19

ALUMNI

Butler wasn’t on Mikayla Eaton’s radar until the winter of her senior year of high school when she heard about the University from a friend and decided to come for a campus tour. “As cliche as it sounds, I fell in love with Butler halfway through the tour. I could picture myself there for the next four years, and that’s when I knew I had to enroll.”

Her experiential learning opportunities didn’t stop there. Eaton also completed a sales co-op with Johnson & Johnson in Chicago during the fall semester of her senior year. While there, she helped develop and launch digital microsites for Walgreens Beauty Advisors, created sales dashboards, and analyzed data to build sales stories.

As a Marketing major with an emphasis in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Eaton served as the CEO for two student-run businesses through the Lacy School of Business’ First-Year Business Experience and Real Business Experience. “I had the opportunity to develop leadership, sales, and presentation skills that set me up for real-life business scenarios.”

Eaton earned a full-time job offer with Johnson & Johnson during her senior year after finishing her co-op. She now lives in Chicago and works as a sales analyst for the company’s top consumer brands: Neutrogena, Aveeno, Listerine, and Johnson’s Baby.

“I have so many memorable experiences from my time at Butler, and it really does fly by so quickly. I tried to take every opportunity I was given, and know that all of it—my experiences in the Lacy School of Business, my involvement in various student organizations, and even all-night study sessions with my best friends—contributed to my success post-graduation.”

PROFILES

NICK HUANG ’18 Nick Huang decided on Butler, due to its emphasis on experiential education and real-world experience. “The fact that I could take an internship early on in my academic career was a game changer for me,” he says. Huang completed five internships during his time at Butler, including participating in the Butler in Asia summer internship program and interning with a senator in Washington, DC. He also studied abroad in Southern Africa through Butler’s Global Adventures in the Liberal Arts program. Those domestic and global experiences prompted Huang to research and pursue the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, an extremely competitive program that funds American citizens to study, conduct research, or teach English abroad. After a lengthy interview process, Huang was

awarded the Fulbright and served as an English teacher in Macao. After finishing his Fulbright experience, Huang moved back to the States and secured a job at Google as a Product Manager, where he helps develop features for Google Voice Assistant.

“I can’t tell you the number of courses I had at Butler that required me to get in front of class and present, speak to large audiences, or collaborate and problem-solve with different people. Butler’s emphasis on teaching those soft skills—along with its focus on experiential learning and a true global education—has really made the biggest difference in my career.” CROSSROADS of YOU
