Hey! I’m Beth and I’m a second year Modern Languages student studying French and Spanish. As one of your Head Freps I’m really looking forward to welcoming you to our college! Feel free to ask me any questions or get in touch over the summer or during Freshers’ Week, I’m always happy to help. No question is too small! I’ve loved the chance to get stuck into college life this year and can’t wait to carry on doing so next year. I’m currently head Christian Union Rep for Butler and a member of Butler Netball and Arts Comm.

I love Butler because it’s a really welcoming friendly community with space to explore everyone’s hobbies and interests. Can’t wait to show it all off to you in October!

Heya, I'm Tom and I'm a second year Geography (BA) student and also one of your Head Freps! I'm heavily involved in Butler's sports teams, and you may see me through the year captaining the rugby side, playing mixed lacrosse, indoor and outdoor cricket or even leading a dodgeball social.

Beth and I are leading the amazing Frep team in creating (hopefully) a great Freshers' Week for you all. Do feel free to ask us any questions - not just during the week but during the whole of your Fresher year.

You've already made your best decision of the year by choosing Butler. That self-catered, en-suite, single room life is the perfect combination to give yourself freedom within your first year, and allow you to settle perfectly into college anduniversity life.

Welcome to Butler!

First of all, congratulations on getting into Durham and you have certainly made the right choice of college! I’m Dan and I have been elected to be your JCR President for the coming year having graduated in July after three years at Butler. This means that I work full-time for you, organising the general activities of the JCR and trying to ensure that you have a brilliant year! There really is something for everyone here, and hopefully this booklet will give you little taste of what to expect when you arrive here and ease any nerves you may have. I’m massively looking forward to meeting you all when you arrive and I’m sure you’ll all have a brilliant time studying and living in Durham.

Hey gang, I’m Sally and I’m the Student Community Development Officer 2016-17. I graduated in June with a degree in Geography and now my job is to work in the JCR office, with Dan, helping with anything and everything that involves developing the student community - from JCR events to sponsorship and alumni relations.

You’re surrounded by opportunities to #getinvolved at Butler. It might just be coming up to have a drink and chill in the bar, or it might be by trying that sport you think you’ll suck at, or signing up to the society you think is totally ‘not you’. College life is the type of thing where you really get out what you put in so branch out, try new things, and meet new people – you won’t regret it!

During my time at Butler I took the opportunity to try cheerleading, rowing and organising events like the Fashion Show and Summer Ball.

These were things I’d never really had the chance to do before and it turns out I loved them all (minus the 6am rowing outings).

With the college’s 10th Anniversary this year you are a very special intake of Freshers, so congratulations and I look forward to celebrating with you when you get here!

Hi! I'm Jess, a second year student studying History. At college I'm involved in STAB (Society of Theatrical Arts at Butler), I work in JBs in the coffee shop, and I'm JCR ViceChair. On a university level, I write for HerCampus Durham, I'm involved with the SCA through their tutoring scheme, and I'm a member of History Society. I would recommend getting involved in activities on a college and universitywide level, as it gives you the chance to meet so many new people, and get the most out of your university experience.

Butler is a very special college, as it has a great sense of community and the college welfare system is fantastic. I love being a part of Butler College; there's always so much going on - it's hard to keep up #GetInvolved!

Hi I’m Rachel. I’m from Newcastle, so local to Durham University! I take part in a range of societies at university level, including being Treasurer of Durham University Scuba Diving Society and Secretary of Durham University Voices Choir. I have found this is a great way to meet a variety of people outside of college and my course. Don’t get me wrong, college societies are fab too! I do Butler Rowing, having never rowed before! College sports and societies are a great way of participating non-competitively, at a variety of levels - it’s all about trying new things and having a laugh. My favourite thing about Butler (it’s so hard to choose!) is the sense of community. As you walk around college, everyone is open with a smile and a friendly “hello”. We are like one big, happy family! The support on offer is great, there is always someone available to chat to with any problems or queries. At Butler you are never alone.

Hey, I'm Matt and currently the Vice-President of the JCR and a third-year Physical Geographer. During my time at Butler I have been the coPresident of the Croquet Society, as well as the Green Comm. Rep. I've also helped organise the celebrations for the college's 10th anniversary, which will continue throughout this year. What I most love about Butler though is our unmistakable spirit. Whether that's chanting PR2, dominating Klute or having everyone's faces coated in the college colours; it's everywhere, it's contagious, and I love it!

Hey guys, my name's James and I'm your JCR Chair! In a nutshell, I'm in charge of overseeing the elections of student-led positions within the JCR. Whether you want to run for Mole-Master, Charities Coordinator, or Summer Ball Chair (Amongst many many more!), I'm the guy who sorts it out! I strongly recommended you #GetInvolved as there will be positions open to Freshers at our first JCR meeting which will take place on the Sunday before lectures begin.

At Butler you'll find an inclusive environment, with a strong 'I'll give it a go' attitude. You have by far the nicest student flats in the whole of Durham, and you're away from the hustle and bustle of town (Which is a huge + around essay/exam season!). At university, what you put in is what you get out, so #GetInvolved and welcome to Butler!

Hey guys I'm Toby and I'm the treasurer here at Butler which means I'm in charge of overseeing how money is spent within the JCR. I'm a third year Computer Scientist and in college I row for the boat club and am on the dinner staff for JBs. What I love most about Butler is the flat and blocks system which make it so easy to socialise right from the first day!

Hi, I'm Laura, a third year history student and your welfare officer. Myself and my four assistants will be around all week if you have any problems, so come find us if you need a chat. I also chair welfare committee on Friday evenings at 6.30pm who will run a series of campaign weeks throughout the year so if you want to get involved come along and join in. Outside of welfare I'm also a cox for the college boat club and involved in Charity Committee. My favourite thing about Butler is how much is always going on. There are several events every week in the bar, right on your doorstep if you live in college. Also, by joining societies and committees you get to be involved in running all the events which is hugely satisfying when they go down well.

I am third year geography student who loves to get involved with Butler life.

Firstly, I am part of the Butler exec team as the role of Service Officer. This is a joint role with my beautiful college wife Holly Stevenson. Together we run JB's, the colleges' kitchen and coffee shop. Last year I was Butler Basketball captain and rolling that position into third year but again as a joint role with my trusty other half Stevo! I love butler because of the massive family community spirit it holds. You can always get involved with something across college life, even if it’s just a couple pints in the bar.

Hi guys! I'm Holly and I'm a 3rd year BSc Geographer. I've been involved with college from the off, taking up the role of basketball social sec in first year. I got a job in the kitchen in second term and made some great friends being in and around the bar. At the end of second year I went for the role of services officer in order to get more involved with college. I'm very excited for the challenges third year will bring, if you have any questions about basketball, the kitchen or geography feel free to ask.

Hi, my name is Rosie! I'm a 3rd year Computer Scientist and your Societies Officer for this year, so you'll probably see me around the Butler Fair looking slightly manic. I'm also President of Jazz Band (I warn you, this is all I ever talk about), Butler's Live Music Coordinator and social secretary for the Durham University Computing Society.

What I love about Butler is that there is so much opportunity to do anything you want, like take up a sport you've always wanted to try, or sing in an acapella choir and live that Pitch Perfect dream.

Honestly though, what I love most is the Butler chicken burger. It's a GOOD burger.

Hi, my name is Jess and I am a third year politics student and bar steward at Butler! In college, I'm involved in the Butler Tigers Cheerleading squad and have previously been part of Democracy Comm. As Bar Steward, it is my job to act as a point of contact between the JCR and college staff in the running of the bar, and to introduce new ideas and events that people want to see! As well as this, I am involved in the staffing of the bar and supporting our student-run bar team. A massive advantage to having a student led bar is that it can be flexible and responsive to what people want to see, so it is very much worth becoming involved in! For me, the best part about Butler College is by far the people- in my opinion Butler is by far one of the friendliest colleges in Durham with perhaps the best bar (although I am biased).

I'm Heather, a 3rd year Biologist and JCR Sports Officer for 2016/17. As Sports Officer I am responsible for effectively running college sport, ensuring that all sports are accessible to you, the JCR. I co-ordinate sports teams within Butler, liaise with team captains and act as a link between Team Durham and Butler. I organise and co-ordinate Sports Socials, the Butler Fair, Sports Formal and York Varsity. I ultimately ensure that your sporting experience at Butler is a positive one, with equal opportunities for everyone to get involved.

At college I'm involved with the women's football team, which I captained last year and the Butler Tigers Cheerleading Squad. I'm also an active member of the university Biological, Biomedical and Biosciences Society. The thing I love most about Butler is the sense of community and integration between all the year groups and the friendly and welcoming atmosphere the college has.

Hi I’m Holly, a third year biologist! I am also your livers out officer for the 2016/17 academic year and swim for the university too. I cannot imagine what my university experience would have been like if I had not been a member of Butler. I can honestly say I’ve had the best two years for my life and know that my third is only going to get better! Hi, I'm Tanja, a second year Natural Scientist doing the joint-honours route in Biology and Psychology. I'm also your Social Chair for the coming year. This means that I'm charge of planning and organising all sorts of events going on in the JCR, such as Formals, Bar Events, Refreshers' Week in January, Newcastle Night Outs and Day Trips. I'm also running Social Comm (Butler's most fun committee) where we usually discuss ideas relating to all the above mentioned events. We also host a termly social, an outing not to miss. I love Butler mainly because of the amazing people I've met here and how easy it is to get involved. In my free time I enjoy playing lacrosse, singing for AccaPitches and sometimes you can spot me in the gym. Most importantly, however, you can usually find me in Klute every Friday.

Hiyaaaa! I am Sudhan Raja, your International Officer for this year. I am third year Economics student and I am heavily involved in various sports, societies and JCR activities in Butler… after all getting involved is our motto! Not sure how it works, but Butler always gets the most friendly, loving and fun students and that's what I love about our college! The ensuite rooms; sharing kitchens; our sick bar; our £10/annum gym; our mound are a few things that makes Butler the place to be!

What is a FREP? Frep is short for Freshers’ Rep. They will be the first people you see as you arrive at Butler, clad in bright yellow t-shirts, full of enthusiasm and are there to lend a helping hand all week! Initially they will help you move into your room, before a designated Frep comes to your flat to give you information and help guide you through your first week. They have all been in your position before and will be more than happy to help.

What is a Welfare Assistant?

The Welfare team are on hand throughout the week to listen to any of your concerns. The welfare mobile will be on every night during Freshers’ Week if you need someone to talk to (07902292931). The welfare team are completely confidential and non-judgemental and will be able to signpost you to the right place.

What is a proctor?

Proctors are Butler students in their later years that are also living in college.

They have been there, done that and got the t-shirt (literally, it’s maroon). Your flat will be assigned a proctor who you can contact throughout the year with any questions surrounding life at Butler. They will occasionally pop round just to make sure you are getting on alright and let you know about what is going on around college!

Hey, I'm Abi, a second year maths student. I'm involved in lots of sport at uni.

This includes playing hockey for the uni, which has been a great way to make friends outside of college. Also, I am the captain of the Butler hockey team and play mixed lacrosse for college. Before uni I had never played lacrosse and found the college team a great way to meet people as well as to try something new. I love the college community at Butler, whenever I leave the flat I always bump into someone I know. I've loved Butler from day one and I hope you do too. Enjoy the rest of your summer and I look forward to meeting you in October.

Hey! I'm Abby, a second year Criminology student at Butler. Butler has so many opportunities available for you, I attend BodySoc weekly as well as Art and Social Comm, which allowed me to meet new people and experience new activities I have thoroughly enjoyed. I also work behind the bar and have found this to be a great way to get to know faces and a way to feel involved in Butler College. I can't wait to get to know you all over the next year and hopefully I can make your first week as enjoyable as I found it. See you soon!

I'm Blaise, and I'm now studying Economics having just finished a Foundation Year. You may recognise me from the Post Offer Open Days, or from my tragic appearance in the Open Day video! I am the new Social Sec of Butler’s male acapella group “Pitch, Please!”, as well as a member of the Butler Rugby and Darts teams, so you can expect to see me throwing some questionable dance moves in Klute on a regular basis. You're all lucky enough to have been placed in the best College at Durham, Josephine Butler. Other colleges may mock us for being far away from town but I assure you we're not. Also, we have pods unlike the rest of the colleges, which you will come to love and cherish. You also get to cook for yourselves, meaning you don't have to have a diet that consists solely of potatoes! But most importantly, you are now part of a family of Butlerites that will support you and ensure you have the best University experience imaginable.

I'm Callum, I came to Durham last year from Belfast to study languages (French, Spanish & Italian) and have really enjoyed Durham life.

Durham has provided so many opportunities, last year I played in the League-winning Butler A Men's Football Team, played in a very successful Butler Futsal Team, worked as part of a great JB's coffee shop staff team and enjoyed the community of Butler and Durham Chrtistian Union. Josephine Butler college allows students to get involved in it's community in whatever way and to whatever extent they want to and I'd thoroughly encourage you to get as involved as you can as this will become your new home and family for the next few years! Josephine Butler is a lively, homely college, so enjoy becoming part of this home!

Hi, my name is Connie! I study English Literature and am currently a member of Butler F Team Pool as well as BodySoc, an aerobic work out class on a Sunday morning. Life in Durham and especially at Butler is described by many as a 'bubble' and you will slowly sink into a way of life centered upon our tiny, beautiful city. This is perhaps fostered by the collegiate system which is helpful in providing a small tight knit community. In particular, Butler offers an extremely welcoming, inclusive, and accepting environment in which everyone can engage and enjoy. Butler has been my home for the past year and the fondness I hold for it will continue throughout my time at university, I am confident that at the end of your first year you will feel the same.

For me, the best things about being part of Butler are the opportunities and the sense of community that comes with it- it's so easy to meet so many friendly people and there will always be someone to chat with in collegeyou'll never be short of friends!

As an English literature student, I came to university expecting a lot of stick for my degree choice. I wasn't wrong, but fortunately I found that at Butler, diverse in both academics and personalities, this wasn't a problem; realistically, everyone pokes fun at everyone's degree, and it's this affectionate banter that is so characteristic of Butler, and one of its greatest assets. Being part of Butler college is great because it not only accommodates all types of people, but welcomes them. If you want to play in team sports, get a part time job, get involved in societies varying from tending allotments to Marvel appreciation, you can. Or if none of those tickle your fancy, or you're the type to fluctuate in certain interests, like me, you can go to the gym, socialise in the bar, and occasionally dabble in societies from time to time. The great advantage of Butler is the variety of things you can get involved in, and the control you have in just how much you do so. Also, you will always have the bragging right of self-catering, single rooms and your very own pod in your arsenal against rival colleges. And don't forget to go up the mound, it's every bit as great as every Butlerite will tell you.

I'm Georgie, a second year BA Geographer. In college I'm involved in Arts Comm and BodySoc, and am also a member of the University's Welsh Society. What I love most about Butler is the fact that there are so many different opportunities available and ways to get involved in college life, wherever your interests lie, there will be something for you! I love the friendly atmosphere here and hope that you experience it upon your arrival! I hope that you have an amazing time during Freshers' Week, enjoy it! Hi, I'm Grace, a second year Education and Sociology student. I'm Butler's Green Committee Rep, encouraging college to promote its green values through awareness campaigns and by organising locally sourced cheese & wine evenings! I also attend Welfare Comm., Media Society and volunteer at a local primary school through SCA. I love Butler's community atmosphere, it's incredibly inclusive and encourages everyone to get involved and to try something new!

Hi, I'm Hannah, a second year Psychology student. I have really enjoyed my first year here at Butler and love the atmosphere and community we have as a college. My favourite thing about living in college has been the communal kitchens that provide a place for you to meet and hang out with friends: a factor many people from other colleges are envious of!

The diversity of the college also means that all interests are catered for and there is always someone there to help you out. I am part of Butler's netball team and have also been a member of Durham's charity committee, DUCK. The chance to take part in both college and university wide societies and sports means that you have the opportunity to meet a lot of different people, which is great to find people who are interested in the same things as you.

Hey, I'm Hannah! I'm a second year Theology student and around college, I take part in both Social Comm and Arts Comm. This means I get to help out organising and setting up for formals, as well as taking part in creative projects around college and with the wider community.

You'll probably hear a million times that 'first year doesn't count so make the most of it', but honestly, get involved in as many of the opportunities around Butler as you possibly can! Come and find me in Freshers if you have any questions or just to say hey!

Hey I'm Jamie, and I'm from West Yorkshire! Studying PPE has helped me understand how and why political and economic decisions in this country are made (well, most of them‌). I'm currently the President of Table Tennis at Butler, I play as a striker in the JBCFC ‘A' team, and I also play tennis at a more casual level. JBCFC won the 2nd division last year, winning all 12 of our matches, and we are hoping to win the Prem this year! As President of Table Tennis, I organise events, and make sure that matches and training go smoothly. If anyone would like to get involved, come and find me! One of the best things about Butler is of course the self catered aspect - being able to eat what you when you want should never be underestimated. If you want to have instant noodles for lunch at 4pm, there's no one to judge you!

I'm a really happy and positive person, and I get involved in college loads with different stuff like cheerleading and also working behind the bar. Butler is the BEST college because we're so welcoming and inclusive; it's really easy to make friends with people in other year groups as well as first years. Friday nights in Klute are the 'Butler' night out so that's a really fun way to see everybody away from the butler bubble, and get to know familiar faces! I went on the uni ski trip which was really good - I've never skiied before so uni is definitely the time to try something new!

Hi! I'm Jisu (Jay-su) and I'm a second year anthropology student. When I'm not reading about my fave man Malinowski, I keep myself busy mainly with DU Troupe, a hip-hop/street dance team that perform at fashion shows, balls and other college/uni events. I'd say I was a pretty outgoing, sociable person, never one to say no to an FNK. What I like most about Butler is that it doesn't pride itself on being a flashy college as cheesy as it sounds, it's all about the people and the friendships you make!

I'm Joe, I'm a second year theology student! In addition to being one of your Freps this year I will also be one of your Assistant Social Chairs! This means I'll be helping to plan and run a lot of your social events, formals and trips throughout the year - hopefully this means you'll be seeing a lot more of me! My name's Joyie and I'm a second-year PPE student! I am currently the Business and Sponsorship Officer of the university's Malaysian Society, where I have been suggesting and carrying out ideas for fundraising as well as planning future events. I'm also a member of the PPE Society and at Butler, I enjoy attending the Debating Society.

Butler College creates a very welcoming environment where all students soon feel at home and thus more comfortable to #GetInvolved and extend their horizons. Freshers' Week, and university on the whole, is such a valuable experience and the Butler community makes it even more memorable by providing a platform to explore your passions, along with the opportunities to grow as a person, whilst also offering the right support when needed.

Hi, I'm Lucy and I'm a second year from Yorkshire. I have loved studying Anthropology so far because the course is so diverse and relevant to the modern world. Beside my subject, my biggest hobby is music, especially singing. I am a member of the University A Capella group, Northern Lights, and loved performing in loads of gigs with them last year, and even travelling down to London for an international competition! In college, I sing with the Jazz Band and I'm a member of Social Committee. I am also taking up a new role this year as the Editor of the college magazine, The Mound. I make regular use of the college gym and also go to Body Soc, which is a student run exercise class. I also love the modern approach of the college, and how active the JCR student body is. I promise you have an amazing year ahead of you!

Hi I'm Maria, I'm from North London and am a 2nd year law student at Butler. In my first year I joined Butler Tigers cheer squad which was the single best decision I made as a fresher. I had so much fun, made friends for life and had the best few nights out of the year. I am now joint social sec so will be organising all the fun this year... The best thing about the collegiate system is that you don't have to be experienced in a sport to get involved and represent your college. Aside from cheerleading I was on DUCK (Durham University Charities Committee) events team, and helped DUCK raise over ÂŁ100,000 for different charities in 1 year. It was a lot of fun and so rewarding. You will soon realise you've chosen well as Butler is by far the best college; everyone you'll meet is down to earth and friendly and the self-catered/en-suite life is ideal.

I'm Phil and I'm in my second year studying English Literature. I'm involved with a lot of sport at Butler, including cricket, pool, table tennis, and badminton. For me, my favourite thing about Butler is the versatility of our college bar. It holds lots of live events, you can get lunch or dinner there, there are pool tables and dart boards, and the drinks are very cheap. But what I grew to appreciate most about Butler as I went through first year was just how friendly every else is at college. There's a real community there, a strong network of support, and plenty of opportunities to find the people and places that make it a home.

Hi guys, I'm Shivani and I studied Maths, Physics and Chemistry (Natural Science) in first year. I love being at Butler because it is a small college so you get to know everyone pretty quickly. When you walk around college you're almost certain to bump into someone you know for a chat. Once at Butler I joined the college tennis club and the Social Committee and did origami and took a yoga class and attended a range of different shows; the Uni has so much to offer, it's impossible not to find something you enjoy. But my favourite times in Butler was spent exploring the Botanic Garden next door or sunbathing on the field with my flat. Hope you all enjoy Freshers' Week and see you soon!

Hey I'm Hannah and I am an international student studying Ancient Medieval and Modern History. For an Australian who lived in Hong Kong, Durham was a massive change but I have loved every minute of it and wanted to get super involved. I joined Green Committee, Poker society, Basketball and Accabutler and met some amazing people. I think Butler offers such fantastic opportunities to get stuck in and make the most of life at uni. Hi, I'm Abby, I'm a second year History student from Bristol. I am involved in college in a variety of different ways from working on the bar to playing in A Team Lacrosse. You will probably see me during Freshers' Week in the chilled/welfare section taking care of you and running tea and toast- the perfect midnight snack. Butler is a brilliant social community with a great variety of people. I love how it is able to function as a modern college with self catering modern buildings as well as retain its traditional feel through formals and celebratory events.

Hi I'm Harry, I am technically a fresher also as I progress into my first year of studying Education and Psychology after completing a Foundation Year. As one of your Assistant Welfare Officers I'll be around college a fair amount, not just in Freshers' Week but throughout the coming academic year running various events. I'm involved with Butler table tennis and pool; you'll probably find me in the bar trying desperately to pot a few and pretend I can actually play.

Butler is a fantastic college with a great atmosphere with the bar being the main social hub, a great place to get out of the flat and chill. I'll most likely see you in Klute on all the cheesy nights!

I love Butler because (as you'll find out for yourself soon) it is genuinely so welcoming and inclusive, you're never far from a friendly face. Being selfcatered is also amazing- not only because you can choose what and when you eat but because other people's cooking (and your own mistakes) always provide a good laugh (top tip - you can't cook nachos in a frying pan).

I'm Nick. I'm a second year, and an Assistant Welfare officer. I'm involved in college life through societies including the recently formed Marvel and DC society, in which I'm the Social secretary and helped organised the society social at the end of the last term. I'm also very active in the social side of college life. As an Assistant Welfare officer, I am involved in planning, organising and running the various welfare campaign weeks throughout the year. I love the friendly and social side of Butler. Through living so close to everyone else within college during the first year there is always something to do, the community spirit and inclusiveness of Butler also really helps to add to this. I also love the bar, which often acts as a social hub in college throughout the year, and provides a very reasonable price on a pint of beer.

I am currently in my third year of studying biomedical sciences. I believe myself to be a happy, humorous, quirky being who is slightly shy and not very sporty, but that's just my opinion. I have been a part of many societies including pudding and Disney, as well as being social sec for Butler Rock and alt society.

Additionally this past year I have been assistant quiz master and helped with raising money for charity comm. Butler has allowed me to get involved in activities I never thought I would and made me feel included in the community. As even when I tried out for a sport, and decided I didn't like it/wasn't very skilled at it, I was still able to take part in the social side of things and made some good friends. Also you can take part and help out with activities put on by societies and committees without making any commitment to join, allowing you to get a feel for what you enjoy. I know everyone enjoys being a part of Butler as much as I do, if not more.

Balancing being a uni student and a local is never easy, especially with the usual Saturday night clashes, but some how I have managed to negotiate life at Butler. Through completing a Psychology degree I have learnt that as long as you can keep up with deadlines there is no way you can't make the most of all the sports and societies and events! At Butler I have been able to take part in sports I have enjoyed since high school and those that I would never have imagined I would get involved with, doing a short stint as a Butler Tiger. And even though cooking is definitely not my area of expertise becoming involved in Pudding Society as social sec gave me the chance to organise socials and enjoy free cake on a weekly basis! Being a member of Butler with the reputation as having the sort after rooms and the biggest bar is certainly something to shout about. But what I love most about belonging to Butler is the fact that you rarely go in the bar without seeing a familiar face!

Choosing Butler was one of the best decisions I have made at University and now you get to experience all of the things that make it the best college at Durham. Getting involved with as many things as possible is so important, currently I am the president of Croquet Society (that you will soon learn is 100 % social and involves very little croquet) and a member of the Butler Netball team, so there is definitely a sport or society (silly or serious) for all your needs! Hi, my name is Matt and I am a fourth-year modern languages student from North Wales. I study German and have just got back from a year abroad in Berlin, Dortmund and Munich. In my first two years at Butler I was heavily involved in college life. I have been an Open Day rep and a Frep, captain of three different sports teams (football, darts and pool), and president of Golf Society. Outside of Butler, I was Social Secretary for the DU Welsh Society and had a weekly show on Purple Radio with a couple of friends. This year I will be president of the college football club, JBCFC. I think Butler is an amazing place to live because of the unbelievable accommodation and facilities we offer here. The whole college feels like a very close-knit community, which is helped a lot by the many sports and societies we have. It is an extremely inclusive college and it is very easy to get involved in anything that takes your fancy.

Dan, Daniel and Ben will be your techies for Freshers’ Week. We will be providing lighting and audio for all of the events in the bar. Dan and Daniel are (rather tall) tech directors; Daniel is an engineer and has past experience of many different engineering and IT projects, whereas Dan is a mathemagician who likes gaming, both of whom mainly like to play with the lights. Ben is shorter with a propensity for pyrotechnics and likes to bake, unicycle (badly) and do photography. He does lights, sound, repairs and is usually engineering some new project.

Technical Committee are working behind the scenes at most events and activities that go on within Butler. Being a new College, we have loads of modern equipment and for larger events, such as Freshers’ Week, we hire equipment to supplement our own.

Shoes for a night out (aka Klute Boots; shoes that you don’t mind getting a bit worn/are robust enough to handle the dancefloor) Notice board pins/tacks (everyone has a notice board in their room, and it can be very effectively used as an extra decoration space with the aid of notice board pins) Speakers/wireless speakers/a radio (having music in the kitchen creates a more relaxing environment, especially when you don’t know each other that well yet. Speakers are really useful; a surprisingly few people seem to bring them, so they’re in high demand for pre-drinks and parties) White tack (you’re allowed to decorate your room as long as you don’t leave any marks on the wall, so white tack is essential. You’ll be an instant saviour in your flat if you have it!)

Sleeping bag and roll mat (for if any family, or friends from home or other colleges, crash in your room. You’re allowed a few visitors, as long as you sign them in at college) Empty folders (you’ll be inundated with paper, especially from your subject, and having folders already so that you can start a filing system really helps you to get settled) Ear plugs (Butler is not a noisy college, so your neighbours are not likely to be noisy at all, but pack these just so that you have peace of mind) Alarm clock (you can use your phone instead, but make sure you have some way of waking yourself up) Decorations and home comforts (we recommend bringing decorations and things from home, as it helps you settle into your new environment faster if you personalize your new space)

In order to file them so you can revise from your notes effectively, a hole punch and a stapler are essential

Don't get too worried about missing home, it's so easy to get involved in college and university life. Everyone is in the same boat, just be yourself and you're sure to make some great friends. No-one will judge you for doing something you like. If you're a secret Disney fan let it out! (Or Let It Go?)

How cheap and good the bar is as a social area and that it allows for you to experience a different social space other than your flat. Also it is a great place to go as a revision break or for tasty food!

Durham Slang The weird and wonderful vocabulary of Durham University and Butler College can baffle even fourth-year linguists… but fear not, you’ll soon learn the lingo!

Al-Qasimi – Main politics building, which houses the admin, staff and tutor rooms.

Bailey – Where the older colleges live, near the river, such as Cuths and Castle Butler Bullet – Each college has its own drinks… and this is one of ours. Drink at your own risk!

Buzzfeed – The reason you will never do any work. It is a website full of top ten lists and quizzes, basically the ideal place to procrastinate.

Cardiac Hill – The hill on the Science Site to several departments. The name refers to the danger faced when battling this obstacle. Let’s just say it’s a lot nicer on the way down, apparently…

CLC – Abbreviation of Calman Learning Centre, where many lectures on the Science Site are held Comm – Abbreviation of committee. We have lots of them at Butler!

TOP TIPS We asked our team for their top tips in making the most of Freshers’ Week

Bring a doorstop for move in day, you'll seem much more friendly and engaging.

Try something new! College life encourages everyone to get involved, whether you have experience or not. So make the most of the societies, sports and committees college has to offer

Go into the week with an open mind, not too high expectations and a considerable supply of caffeine.

Throw yourself into the fancy dress nights... the ones who look stupid are the ones who think they are too cool to join in!

Keep track of what's going on throughout the week. Have a copy of the arrival booklet handy for reference to the timetables, and check social media for any updates. This will minimise the chance of you missing out on any fun activities.

Always get cash out when you're in town (it's a long walk if you need some)

Klute’s floors are notoriously sticky, so buy a separate pair of shoes for Klute Fridays, I ruined my brogues :'(

Don't be afraid to take part in activities on your own, it will be a great opportunity to meet people other than your flatmates.

The events during the day are just as fun and important for meeting people as the nights out, so don't sleep through them

TOP TIPS Pace yourself throughout the week. Believe it or not, there is more to Freshers' Week than simply the drinking - if that's your thing, you've got 3 years of that to come, so don't get too fixated on it during the first week.

Freshers' is a fantastic time to meet people (it can be said that alcohol assists this...), sign up to sports and societies (at both college and uni level) and also a time to set you up for your first year of your degree – prepare yourselves for a hectic week!

Make sure to try out the array of societies on offer at College and University level, not only is it a great way to meet a variety of people but you may love an activity you have never tried before and never dreamed you would be good at.

Revise the lyrics to all the best (and worst) 90's pop songs in preparation for Klute...

You don't need to be nervous about making friends because everyone is freaking out about it just as much as you are.

Don't fill your fridge with food on the first week of uni, there is always so much food about and you'll end up wasting it!

Keep gap year references to a maximum of three a week‌ #foundyourself

Oranges are incredible - you'll probably want a voice during the first couple of weeks of term, and they may help prevent freshers' flu... Also great for the morning after a rogue Sunday Night Klute.

Be yourself and don't panic.

Important FAQs What is Freshers’ Week for?

The main purpose of the week is to welcome you to Durham University and to Butler College, and our Freps will be working day and night to ensure that this is a reality.

Freshers’ Week marks a new start: a perfect opportunity to explore a new place, try lots of new things like sports and societies, and meet many new people along the way. Hopefully, and to the great sadness of your parents, you’ll be starting to refer to Butler as ‘home’ by the end of the week! However, it’s important to remember that there is much more to your first year than your first week. There is loads going on throughout the whole year (check out the wall planner in your kitchen), and in many cases people don’t work out who their closest friends are until later!

Do I have any serious commitments in Freshers’ Week?

Yes, some. Academically, you will have to go to course inductions and module registration. Each department has different talks at different times, but we’re here to help put you on the right track. You will also have to attend your official enrolment to your College and university, called ‘Matriculation’, which will happen at both Butler College and Durham University.

In terms of preparation, each department differs and some require you to start reading/buy books beforehand, whilst others do not. The department will contact you if you do have a reading list, or if you’re impatient, look on DUO when you get your login details.

You will find out you room number and future flat mates when you arrive - sorry, you wont be able to Facebook stalk them prior to moving in! There are six Butlerites per flat, with an en-suite each, and a shared kitchen. After completing the online questionnaire, College will try and place you with like-minded people. But don’t worry, this isn’t the be-all-and-end-all: you have neighbours on all sides, so don’t worry if you don’t necessarily share a flat with all of your best friends (you can always live with them in second year)!

How do I get internet access at Butler?

There is Wi-Fi all over the college, but for those who prefer their internet on Usain Bolt levels, then each bedroom is provided with an Ethernet port, which speeds up the already fast internet. You can access the Wi-Fi with your university log-in.

Before your computer can access the internet, you will be asked to scan it to check it meets the minimum requirements of the uni (aka has an up-to-date anti virus). You can pre-emptively scan your computer here https://www.dur.ac.uk/cis/esol/remotescan/.

Don’t worry if it doesn’t work: we’ll have a few trained Freps on hand who should be able to sort out your problems.

Butler has nearly 400 ensuite bedrooms, organised into flats of six with a shared kitchen. You will be sharing with five other first-year undergraduates, although Butler is home to undergraduates and postgraduates of all ages.

Bedroom: computer network point and cable, television aerial socket (but remember: if you have a TV, you’ll need a TV license), desk with drawers, swivel chair, desk lamp, single bed (you can bring a bedside table), wardrobe, and - one thing that sets our rooms apart from other colleges - your very own ‘pod’, or ensuite! Here are some measurements we’ve collected for you keen beans: Bed to desk – 118cm Bed to pod – 75cm Shelves – 71cm wide Wardrobe to door – about 200cm You are not allowed, however, any appliances such as kettles or mini fridges in your room (unless for medical purposes).

Kitchens: sink with communal cupboard space underneath, oven, microwave, toaster, kettle, individual top and bottom lockable cupboards for each member of the flat, a fridge and freezer with a shelf for each person, table and chairs (cooking for each other and eating together saves money, energy and is good fun), comfy chairs, recycling bins and a bin for other rubbish, iron, ironing board, vacuum, first-aid kit Can I decorate my room?

Yes, please do! The only rule is that you cannot mark the walls, so use white-tac instead of blue-tac, pretty please. Each room also comes with a notice board which you can decorate to your heart’s content.

Decorating your room will help it feel more like home and is a great way to avoid home sickness. No candles though please!

Where’s the nearest supermarket?

There is a Tesco Metro in the centre of town which is handy, especially if you have lectures nearby. There’s also a Sainsbury’s Local along North Road. Tesco Extra is about a 10-minute carjourney from Butler, or a bus ride away. There is also a large Sainsbury’s outside of Durham. Many students get Tesco/Asda/Sainsbury’s deliveries which charges between £1-£5. If you share a delivery with your flat, this works out even cheaper! Durham Markets has lots of fresh food at a very good price, has a student discount, and delivers fresh fruit and veg and meal packs to Butler! .

Important FAQs Where will I do my laundry?

Butler has a laundry room on site which is equipped with plenty of washing machines and tumble dryers. Most machines dispense detergent, but you can still bring your own if you prefer. You will receive a laundry fob with your keys, which can be topped up with cash outside the bar. It costs £2.50 for a wash and 50 pence for a dry.

Can I get a part time job in Durham?

There are plenty of opportunities to get a job. The university offers some e.g. telephoning alumni, and there are jobs available in town at local bars, restaurants and cafes. Butler offers jobs in JB’s Kitchen, Coffee Shop and Bar with flexible shifts. Bear in mind that the university advises you that you work no more than 10/15 hours a week.

What’s the weather like?

Studying in the north of England is not usually going to be a tropical experience. The climate can vary from snow to beautiful sunshine, which usually comes in the exam period, but it’s great in the 4 week relaxation period that follows exams. In early October the average temperature will be around 13 degrees, but remember: in Michaelmas term it will only get colder! Therefore, consider investing in a waterproof, a warm coat, gloves, scarf, blanket, thick duvet, wellies/boots with good grips for walking up and down Durham’s hills, and maybe even thermals!

Should I bring a car?

First years are not allowed to have a car unless there are exceptional circumstances i.e. medical, a disability, and family reasons. This shouldn’t be a problem though as most places are within a 30 minute walk away.

How long does it take to walk places?

The university has departments right across the city so walking time does differ. Here are the approximate timings for the main areas.

Important FAQs Ergh, what if I don’t want to walk?!

There is a Park and Ride facility on our doorstep, which operates an all-day ticket (7am7pm) for £1 with a student card. There are stops at the Science Site, Elvet Riverside and Town. If you don’t want to catch the bus, Butler has a bike rental scheme. For just £15 you can hire one of our bikes for the whole year. This can provide useful in getting around the city (as long as you don’t mind cycling up hills!) with bike lock-ups dotted around the city.

How much shall I bring?

There is no real answer to this. Some people have luggage restrictions, while some seem to bring their entire load of possessions! We’d advise against bringing too much, since it’ll just make your room overcrowded. Prioritise: pick pens and paper for lectures over something like a microwaveable omelette maker (we don’t even know what one of those would look like. On second thoughts, bring one to show us, stuff the pens).

‘Freshers’ flu’: truth or myth?

Unfortunately, it’s true that Freshers’ flu is real and affects many of our newcomers each year! This week is possibly one of the most hectic you’ll ever experience so it’s normal to end up feeling a bit run-down. However, this is nothing to worry about. You can keep your doctor at home, but most students change to the University Health Centre. To do this, you must complete Medical Registration in in your welcome pack before you arrive. If you are not registered with the University Health Centre you can still visit a walkin centre. At Butler there are also many people who can help you out when you’re not feeling at your best: the welfare team, proctors, resident tutors, mentors, college staff and Freps. You may want to bring some headache or vitamin tablets or cold and flu medication like Beechams…

What clothes shall I bring?

Again, it’s hard to say how many to bring, too many can be hard to fit into your room, but too few brings a new urgency to washing! The clothes you bring may depend on the term. After all, there’s no point packing jumpers in the summer. Do bring: • Dresses/suit, tie, dinner jacket and bow-tie for Durham’s regular formal events (in our College we have a formal every fortnight), get a gown (new or second-hand) on arrival. There is a formal in Freshers’ Week, and you will also have to dress formally for matriculation.

• Shoes: good grip –- yes. Heels – no (cobblestones). At least not for daily wear, though you may want some for formals and to make the shorter men amongst us feel emasculated.

• Fancy dress – big in Durham, throughout the year. Look at the timetable on the back of this booklet to see what fancy dress you may need for Freshers’ Week in particular.

Important FAQs What should I wear for Matriculation?

Matriculation is your formal ceremony welcoming you to Durham. As Butler is a gowned college, freshers wear their gowns to the short service and are expected to dress smartly; generally suits or dresses. Flat shoes are a must, we walk to the cathedral and there are many cobbles and hills! We will also be having a Freshers Formal during the week which will be gowned and require similar attire to matriculation.

Can I leave things over Christmas/Easter?

At Christmas, you should be able to leave your things in your room. For Easter, however, some of you will have to clear your room for those staying over for the Post Application Open Days in March. However, beds are fitted with bed boxes underneath which are lockable and fit a reasonable amount of stuff.

What’s the nightlife like?

There are quite a few clubs in Durham to manage to cater to all tastes. Klute is world renowned (don’t Google it) for its cheesy music playlists all week long, whereas Loveshack, generally visited by Butler students on a Wednesday, is more of the typical chart music. There are themed nights aplenty at Studio and Loft; Fabio's provides an alternative scene and live music on various nights too.

If you don’t fancy Durham, Newcastle is only 12 minutes away on the train, with a typical taxi to the Toon costing anywhere between £25-40 one-way as well as a Nightbus service from Durham to Newcastle that costs around £5. College also run Newcastle Nights Out a few times a year if you fancy going on a scheduled trip. If clubs aren’t your thing, along with all the pubs and bars in town, being a collegiate university means access to all College Bars.

When can I arrive?

Our international students arrive on 28th September, while our home students arrive on 2nd October. You can arrive anytime from 10am to give yourself plenty of time to unpack, register and meet your flatmates. Our Freps will be on-hand to help move you into your room. Parents are invited to talks at 12 and 3 o’clock and there are evening events for you to enjoy.

Can parents stay over?

While they’re welcome to stay overnight (especially for those coming from abroad/Plymouth), College does not provide any accommodation for parents. There are plenty of hotels around Durham and the surrounding area, ranging in price. It would probably be best to book as soon as possible, simply because of the amount of Freshers starting at Durham this year.

Important FAQs When will I receive a reading list?

Each department differs, some require you to start reading/buy books beforehand, others do not. The department will contact you if you do have a reading list or look on DUO (Durham University Online) when you get your login details.

What are formals?

Butler formals are roughly every fortnight on Mondays, and involve a reception in the Bar, a three course meal and entertainment in the Bar afterwards. As a College, we are relatively laid back with some traditions; our formals reflect this, with some being gowned, black tie and even fancy dress If formals aren’t for you, do not fear, as aside from the Freshers’ Formal, you can attend as many or as few as you wish. They cost about £11, so it is great bang for your buck.

Is it normal that I haven't heard from Durham or Butler ever since the automatic reply from AS12 plus the UCAS congratulation thingy?

Happens every year, pal. Just sit tight! The university is processing several thousand freshers’ at the moment which, understandably, takes a while. You’ll get your welcome pack and other stuff, like username and password, coming through soon.

Do I need to buy tickets for freshers’ week events?

Not for the events at Butler but if you want to go to the University Freshers’ Ball you need to buy a ticket through the DSU. Pray tell, what is DUO? Durham University Online. It’s a digital learning platform where your lecturers will upload your lecture slides, reading lists and assignments. Don't’ worry if it looks scary or confusing at the moment, you’ll get very used to it very quickly!
