For the Ando ver Central Jaguars, they’ve been here be fore.State runner-ups to a private school. Just like last time, they have an opportunity run it back. As if it’s written in a book, the same thing is happening. They’ll have to replace a lot of key pieces to that state ti tle game run if they are going to return toTopeka.TheJaguars are re turning only three players on each side of the ball heading into 2022.They’ll also have to replace Bronx Wood, who has transferred to Rose Hill. He was expected to be a key piece to the offensive line for the Jags. Not many teams in the state can say theyhave as reliable of a kicker as Isaac Saye but Central can saythat. He made 56 of 60 PATs last season and made four field goals, leading the Jag uars with 68 points last year. He averaged nearly 40 years andwith nine of his 28 punts ending insidetheLook20. for senior Jace Rees to step into the starting running back role. He split timewith his brother in backing up AshrongBarkdull last season. He finished the sea son with 247 yards, while scoring twotouchdowns. He’s a fast, shifty player who if given the space, willtake it to the house. The Jaguars willlook to Braden Bar scewski to step in as the next quarterbackat Central. The bar was set very high last season by Kai Kunz, who’s now at KU play ing football. Don’t be surprised if you were to see Jace Jefferson, a sophomore take a few reps at QB. It’s going to be nice for whoever is runningthe offense to see Ta bor lined up outside. He’s an honorable mention all-state re ceiver who had more than 1,000 all-purpose yards last season. He’s as fast on the gridironas he is on the baseball field. The offensive line is replacing four start ing offensive linemen from last year’s team.Ayden Tommer, Ken dall Diller and RileyReimer will be tasked with replacing the O-Line.Onthe defensive side, the Jaguars are replacing a lot but they’re liking what they have Sanchezback. alreadyholds colleve offers and will be a solid linebacker this sea son. Diller is another one who saw time last year that can step into an expanded role as a junior. In the secondary,Tabor and Mason White will make it tough for opposing defenses. They’ll see 5-star

After losing to Haysin the 5A regional last season, they lost a slew of players to graduation. Players like Max Middleton, Tayton Klein, Chan dler Goodnight, and Max Rudy will be hard to be replaced but yousaw some of the tran sition last season. Nik Pai came on strong in the second half of the season. Pai, really filled in thatrole who was created for Ashton Ngo the year before. He took it and—literally —ran withLookit. for Pai to see an expanded role inthe offense this sea son. Last year he ran for 300 yards, scoring a touchdown. The Augusta Orioles are re turning a ton of talent from last year’s 6-win team and expecta tions are high. You can tell the Orioles know it. Practices are full of energy and players seem more moti vated than in year’s past. In 2020, they were the talk of DIII with a chance to poten tially push McPherson for theleague title. They tripped out of the gate, losing their first two and struggled to recover. Fast foward, they’re back and one difference is how toughthey are this season. As long as they stay healthy, many thinkthe Orioles could be a dark horse in 4A. With junior quarterback, Gavin Kiser, back this season, the Orioles have their show man under center. His ability to dicate the offense, paired with his accuracy, makes the Orioles offense, the flexbone, unpre dictable. He’sbigger and stronger af ter playing baseball all summer long. A year under his beltstarting varsity will help. The Orioles will be tested right away with Chanute, McPherson and Mulvane. The Orioles have an O-Line that’ll protect everyone. With Dylan Slusser, Gabe Kant, Zander Erwin, Cooper Jay just to name a few, they’re big upfront and not afraid to hit a de fense. We saw that last season as they were seventh in 4A inrushing yards per game (234.9). Cooper Jay is garnering some college interest. Something towatch for this season. Isaiah Blackwell, Markus Ter ry and Caden Stillwell growingin their roles it will be a dan gerous offense. We haven’t even mentioned Kaden McDaniel, a 6-foot-5 wideout and stellar defender.McDaniel, Terry, CalebMarin and rankeddefense.onOrioleswanttheirpassThey22of 32 teams in Class 4A in passing yards allowed. The streak has reached 21 consecutive losses for the Bluestem Lions.Ifyou talked to the coaching staff, they are very confident this is going to be a much improved year. After only scoring 24 points total last season, it can only be looking up.It starts with new head coach Ethan Baker. He has the kids believing in the change. You can tell in practice and the way theyattack it. Baker was on the staff last season and knows what to fix. He also has the support of the community from hearing peoplerave about him al ready. For Baker, it helps he has a mas sive returning groupthat has a lot of ex perienece.Thatstarts withse niors Kolby Hebband Gavin Wor rell. The two line man that will play bothsides of the ball have size and strength to help get the Lions back on track. Brody Mohr, the 6-food-1 QB seems to have grasped theoffense and is really figuring it out. Then, there is sophomoreAyden Mashaney, who saw plenty of playing time as a freshman. He’ll be asked once again to carry the load at running back. Malachi Jimenez is a 6-foot-4 defender that can use his size to help attacking opposing offenses, while Mashaney may not be the biggest end at 5-foot-6, he’s fast and can get off the ball quick.Aname we’ve come to know is Tucker Gibb. He was thrown into the fire as a freshman and has made some plays over histime at Bluestem. He’ll be looked to as a leader on both sides of the ball as a junior. The schedule has its lumps with teams like Sedgwick but thereare opportunities as they drop down to 1A. Games against Rem ington and Marion make the schedule a little easier than Garden Plain.Keep an eye out for the opening week game against Neodesha and Week 2 against Fredonia as the Lions prepare to get back on the winning ways. Week 8 will have a big rivalary game against county foe, Dou glass on Oct. 21.The Lions travel to Remington Sept. 30 for another in-county match up.

It was heart break in close games for the Bulldogs last season. They dropped an over time, weather-delayed game to Remington Week 1, in which they held a late fourth quar ter lead. The following week, they dropped a tough one to Marion, where they were tied at halftime. The next week, Wichita Trinity knocked them off by a point when the 2-point conversion failed. This season, the Bulldogs know they need to turn those losses into wins. It’s just that extra that could’ve turned a 2-win season into a 4 or 5-winTheyseason.open the season with Belle Plaine, a school they are 20-5 against since 1992. Then, they travel to Ellinwood. To say those at Douglass are excited would be an Alexanderunderstatement.hasgone right to work and he has a nice group of returning players that could make his first year a successful one. The Bulldogs will be without their star run ning back Dalton Hilyard who graduated in the spring, but they will be boosted by the return of senior Wade Morgan who shared backfield duties with Hilyard last year. Alex ander will also be counting on sophomore Ky ler Moore and junior Brock Stiner to replace Hilyard’s 2021 production. Morgan ran for over 500 yards last season and scored five touchdowns playing thunder to Hilyard’s lightning in the backfield. Jace Pichler, a sophomore pitching superstar could see time in the backfield. He’s 5-foot-9, 190 lbs., solid size for an eluding back. Brock Stiner, the leading receiver from a year ago, had 16 catches for over 200 yards and a touchdown. Last season, if you would have told the Circle T-Birds they were going to win six games and win their first playoff game in over 40 years, they’d believe you. They knew it was possible and those around the pro gram knew it. The only people who were surprised, were the ones who hadn’t been paying attention to what was being built in Towanda. Under head coach Logan Clothier, the T-Birds last season won as many games as they did the previous four They’re not done yet. That’s why, even though they lost their two-year starting QB, Luke McGinnis, the T-Birds are flying high heading into 2022. With the return of Cannon McCormack at run ning back and Ty Smith outside, the T-Birds have two home run threats at skill positions and that’s going to make Cooper Chadwell’s job much easier. Leading us to your new QB at Circle. Well, not exactly new. He’s started a couple of games in place of injured McGinnis. However, fast foward to this year and he’s finally ready to take the reins on this offense that is full of big offensive linemen and tal ented skill players. Add in Bonner Jeffries, a 6-foot-1 race care and 5-10 Dylan Foes in the slot, the T-Birds are ready to go. As explosive as their offense can be, they’re pretty fired up about their defense. With McCormack putting on 20 lbs. of muscle ac cording to the coaching staff, he’s primed to lead a de fense that was better thant he stats led you to believe. Adriew Tien and Tony Berryman lead a talented ju nior class linemen for Circle. They’ll team up with Gar rick Wright, the 6-2, 235-lb. lineman who plays both sides of the ball. The schedule is favorable for Circle. They play Labette, who hasn’t had a winning record since 2017. They also get Abilene at home, whois riding a 25-game losing streak heading into 2022. They also will travel to Wel lington. Another team who hasn’t seen a winning season in a few years. Don’t tell this to Circle. They know what it’s like being looked over. They’re not doing it to anyone. Buhler game in Week 2 and then travel to Mac in Week 4. Big time rivalry game against Augusta in Week 5 after the T-Birds went to Augusta, winning 42-35 last sea son. Returning starters

Gannon White returns as quarterback once again. The four-year starter has 10 career wins in his first three seasons. It’s the best 3-year span for any quarterback at El Dorado for more than 20 years. Levi Wittenberg moves from center to the backfield and Jalen Rice, who was original ly going to play only defense will line up on the offensive side. Adam Cavallaro is due for a break out season. In years’ past every time he touched the ball, you held your breath waiting for a big play. Trace Fowler is another name you should get used to hearing this season. Cole Rickard, Rice and Wittenberg make up a three-headed linebacking core that will be tough to defend. They’re strong, fast and they’re smart. Wittenberg and Rice have col lege offers and are invited to a national all-star game. Rickard, only a junior, should start see ing the same attention if he has a big season. Collin Scott on the offensive line with Aid en Mays and Michael Riddle should help overcome the loss of Gavin Bell to the colle giateTheranks.Wildcats open the season at Clearwater and then host Wesley Fair, K-State commit, in Week 2. Then, they travel to Andale before playing Augsta at home in Week 4. That will be a rematch of a game last season in which the Orioles won in El Dorado, 21-14. A new league opponent in Rose Hill on Oct. 7 and they end the regular season on the road in Independence, a place where they started the year last season. It had been a long time since the Flinthills Mus tangs had experienced a playoff game. Last season, though they only one three games, it felt like a win ning season for the Mustangs. Heading into the second year of his tenure as the head ball coach at Flinthills, Chase Casteel is ready to take the Mustangs to the next level. Casteel returns a good chunk of a senior class that has helped turn around this program. A school that had only seen four wins since 2015 saw three lastHunterseason.Lowmaster, who’s finally a senior and feels like he’s been at Flinthills forever, will man the offense under center. Last season, he accounted for more than 60 percent of the total offense, in cluding 11 touchdowns. They’ll have to find a way to replace Brandon Gleason, who was a fullback who could barrell throw the line and was a game changer with his strength. Kendal Pinkerton graduated and was the leading rusher last season. Taste Leslie and Wyatt Osborne are two receiver you should keey your eye on. Leslie saw time last year and as a junior, Osborne will be counte don for his catching ability. Mason Randall and Levi Beard are two freshman the Mustangs think will contribute immediately thisIsaiahseason.Fulkerson and Tiler Slaughter-Scott will both play the Tight End position and maybe could find their way into the running back position if needed.TheMustangs will get a rematch against Oxford, a team they beat 70-68 last season in four OTs. The win over Oxford ended up being the deciding factor in getting into the playoffs for Flinthills. It’s not always about who you beat at the end of the season. Week 2, they will travel to Burden and then to Udall for Week 3. The Mustangs clinched the play off spot with the win over Udall last season at home. After losing to Cedar Vale-Dexter by 38 in 2020, Flinthills returned the favor, winning 48-0 last sea son. This year, they’ll host the Spartans in a rubber match.Tough games to ened the season against Yates Center and perinnial power Sedan are on the dock et.
CLASS: 8-MAN I HEAD COACH: Chase Casteel, 2nd season (3-6) (74-24)
One last hurrah for a senior class that has helped turn around a football program that could never quite get it going consistently. They haven’t seen a coach stay more than two years before Wes Bell stayed... for three. However, what has been implemented is a way to win. They experienced what a winning season was like and that’s driven them to have one more great year as senior. These 13 seniors have seen the highs and the lows. Many have been playing varsity since their freshman season. This season, as they drop down to Division IV in the AVCTL, they will see a new crop of schools and once again, will fight to get back into the upper echelon of Class 4A teams. Under new head coach Brandon Wise, the Wildcats will continue their flexbone offense that has seen them be one the most dominat ing run teams in 4A over the last few years. In 2020, they were the No. 1 rushing offense in the state. In 2021, They were a platry second best (307.0) behind Paola (307.6). The Wildcats will use a varation of differ ent running backs this season, easing the load which they’ve put on the one-back they’ve been loading up on the last few years.

In terms of returning talent, there may be no one more suited for a break out year this season than Rose Hill. They have more than 13 players returning from a team who lost in the first round of theTheyplayoffs.return a lot of experience of players who were thrown into the fire after a large graduating class the year before. This season, it’s about improvement. For coach Lee Weber, that’s all he wants. That’s going to start up front for the Rock ets, who 27th of 32 teams in Class 4A in terms of offense. That should be much improved with a more seasoned team. The offensive line with Milan Olvin, Kolton Richwin, Chase Williams, Keegan Tayor, Kalen Higdon, Easton Sears, a Wichita Southeast transfer , Dawson McNaul and Andover Central transfer, Bronx Wood all vying for time on the line This will give junior quarterback Connor Wallis time to throw and use his targets wisely. He’ll return Boeden Whitted, the senior running back ran for over 400 yards last season with six touchdowns to lead the Rockets. He’llline up in the backfield with Pierce
Probasco, a 6-foot presence with his speed and size for most 4A DBs, he’s a mismatch. Luke McLaughlin, a WR/Safety combo is getting serious college offers. The two could be a scary duo if Wallis can find his footing at QB. McLaughlin was second on the team in receptions and had one of the four TD passes last season. Teagan Cobb will be a weapon for the Rockets this season. The footballer, now turned full-time american footballer, will use his leg to help the Rockets win some games. They dropped some close games last season due to injuries and no special teams at that Jaydentime.Jones at LB and Tyler Kiser at DE provide the Rockets a boost on defense. While the league hasn’t too much as they’ll still play all the teams in AVCTLIV, they’ll still play Mulvane. After two tough weeks to start the season, Rose Hill hosts Clearwater and then travels to Abilene, a team who’s struggled to win very many games this decade. Now only rivals instead of divisional foes, Mulvane hosts the Rockets on Sept. 30. Since 2012, Rose Hill is 3-9 against Mul vane.

REMINGTON
OFFENSE: Multiple Spread DEFENSE: 3-4 Multiple One of the most successful season classes in Remington’s recent memory is gone and now it’s time for the young guns to step up. Remingto had their first winning sea son since 2010 and made it to the Class 1A regiona, where they ran into the always tough, Smith Center. Braden Scribner, a Butler County Play er of the Year nominee is at Southwestern. So is Duke Kinley. Sterling Lies has trans ferred to Sedgwick. The one thing besides the mammoth offensive line is the return of sophomore running back, Kole Klaassen. As a freshman last year, he was sensa tional. He was the leading rushing for the Broncos with more than 370 yards last sea son. He also scored four touchdowns. Also caught some passes as well. He was a doit-all player. He even made his mark defensively. He had nearly 40 tackles as a linebacker. He’ll be looked upon to carry more of the offensive load as they break in a new quarterback. Sophomore Isaac Jury is the future at QB. He’ll step in and McKee and staff seem confident in his abilities. The real strenghth will be the offensive line for Remington. Angel Lopez, garning multiple college and Rodolfo Vargas, not far behind, the two make up a stron gof fensive line that gives Klaassen semi-truck sized holes to run through. They’re seasoned, too. Having started for multiple seasons and gone through the fire to come out the other side with a successful season just fuels a desire for more wins. Sam Entz is a 6-for-3 tight end and his size makes him a large presence at linebacker. Him and junior Carson Jarvis should help keep the momentum with how good the Bronco defense was last season. The always tough HOA league will pro vide a challenge with Inman and Sedgwick. However, getting teams like Marion, Blue stem, Belle Plaine and Hutch Trinity, pro vides some potentially winnable games and learning times for this young Bronco team. The goal is to be up there with the Sedg wick’s and get back to where they were in 2005, when they advance to the Class 3A semifinals.Fornow, they’re focused on Sterling on Friday night.
Then in Week 6, the Rockets host new AVCTL-IV school, El Dorado. Rose Hill is 11-1 all-time against the Wildcats (2015, 14-7).They round out the season with a trip to Buhler and home against Wellington for Senior night. The schedule sets up nicely if they win the games they’re supposed to, the Rockets could be seeing a couple of home games in the playoffs come November.

CLASS: 5A HEAD COACH: Lee Weber, 5th season (13-24), 22nd overall (91-105)

Arguably the best defender on the team coming into this season. Butler has always had solid and even great defenders but Massey has a chance to be up there with the best of them. The preseason all-american from JCGridiron was a first team selection. He was the only Grizzly cho sen on the first team. Last year, he had a couple of sacks and about 15 tackles. This season expect that production to jump. If Massey and the stellar LBrs can step up and play the way the coaches know how, the Grizzlies will go from unranked to title hunt quickly.Ifthe LBrs struggle, we might as well start thinking of next season already.

The transfer from Miami (FL) or better known as the ‘U’ should help boost Butler’s offensive line that saw plenty of Gettingdepartures.aDivision I bounceback from Miami (FL) is a big get for Brice Vignery and staff but how will Walker do? That’s the ultimate question we have to keep an eye on. Walker was a 4-star, top 160 recruit in the nation out of high school. Originally committed to the University of Florida, he transferred to the rival school in May 2020. While he didn’t play a down at Miami, he entered the transfer portal and is now at Butler. Jake Wolff returns at QB this season and we’ve talked about it a lot but his position in the offense is so important, we have to keep harping on it. How Wolff reacts and is ready for this sea son will decided how the Grizzlies do this season. If he is a gun-slinger as we saw at the beginning of last season, the Grizzlies are going to be in very good shape this sea son. He’s a sure fire FBS QB next season if he comes out and plays the way we know he can.If he struggles, don’t be surprised if we see Jacobi Myers, the kid from Florida who committed to NC State in high school step in and try to give it a go. With how fast this offense wants to go, it’s all about what Wolff can do for you.
