Welcome to the Boston University Division of Materials Science and Engineering Annual Report Highlights. In this brochure you will see the astonishing growth of our program since its inception seven years ago. Here also is a small sampling of the amazing breadth and depth of research being done in Materials Science at Boston University, ranging from studies of the mechanical properties of human bone to nanomechanical devices working at the quantum limits to deep UV sources to provide enough clean drinking water for the world’s thirsty inhabitants.

Researchers at BU are pushing the frontiers of science and engineering and in doing so creating technologies that are positively impacting the lives of people around the world, and making the world a better place for us all.

Post-bachelor’s PhD Post-master’s PhD Through coursework, collaborative training projects and dissertation research, MSE PhD students learn to apply analytic and advanced computational methods and the latest techniques to current problems in biotechnology, nanotechnology, electronic and photonic devices, energy processing and more. Research areas include clean energy, solid-state lighting, photonics and fiber optics, biomaterials and soft tissues, and MEMS and bioMEMS applications.

Over the last decade exciting developments in materials-based technologies range from lab-on-a-chip devices to drug delivery systems to novel engineered tissues.

The non-thesis Master of Engineering program is suited to industry professionals who wish to further their careers by acquiring deep technical knowledge, supplemented with business fundamentals and critical management skills. The degree program can be completed in as little as one year of full-time study (part-time study is also an option), and students may concentrate in biomaterials; materials for energy and environment; electronic/photonic materials; or nanomaterials.

Any masters student interested in the With Engineering Practice option must apply and complete an approved internship integral to their program of study. This degree option allows a student to develop additional technical and professional skills.

NANOMATERIALS research is concentrated in areas such as coatings, composite materials, photo-acoustic microscopy, nanoscale materials, and multi-scale modeling. Research, often conducted with industry partners, spans a range of application areas, including mechanics and fluid dynamics at the nano-scale, and developing enhanced materials processing capabilities for opto-electronic applications, advanced engines and power systems.

MAJOR RESEARCH AREAS

The Materials Science and Engineering Core Facility was officially commissioned in June 2012. Since that time, it has grown to house multiple core pieces of equipment for the Materials Science & Engineering and Photonics Center Community. These include a materials processing area with two Salare hoods dedicated to acid and base processing; two Bruker X-Ray systems — the N8 Horizon and the D8 Discover for small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS and WAXS), respectively; a Zeiss Xradia 410 Versa system for x-ray micro-tomography at submicron resolution; an AFM-FM microscope being retrofitted with Raman Spectroscopy for enhanced tip capability; a new Renishaw Raman microscope system with a heating/cooling stage and multiple wavelengths for Raman observation; a FEI Quanta 3D FEG FIB with dual SEM and FIB capabilities, and a FEI Tecnai Osiris S/TEM with EDX and EELS capabilities.

DID YOU KNOW? OUR FACULTY IS DOING EXCITING RESEARCH...

• Gauging newborn malnutrition, kidney disease and more: Professor Mark Grinstaff and his students have engineered a polymer sensor that indicates if breast milk has sufficient calories for nursing newborns.

The sensor could be tuned to detect surface tension changes in other biological fluids—blood, urine, saliva and more—that may serve as indicators of a wide range of medical conditions. User-friendly and powerfree, such sensors could be deployed at the point of care, including in the home.

• Cancer care — faster, better, cheaper and closer to home: Professor Catherine Klapperich leads the Center for Future Technologies in Cancer Care (CFTCC) in efforts to shift advanced technologies away from large, specialized facilities toward smaller, local clinics and patients' homes—and return test results within minutes rather than days—replacing high-cost imaging and late-stage cancer care with earlier, smarter care and prevention. In its first three years, the CFTCC has funded 12 projects, two of which have produced devices that are now being commercialized.

• Mechanical stimulation contributes to bone healing: Professor Elise Morgan, director of the Orthopaedic and Developmental Biomechanics Laboratory, is investigating how mechanical factors contribute to the development, adaptation, failure and regeneration of bone and cartilage. Current projects include the use of mechanical stimulation to promote bone regeneration, the biomechanics of spine fractures and bone healing, and non-invasive diagnostics of bone healing and inflammatory bone loss.

• Innovation in energy extraction and environmental stewardship: Professors Xin Zhang and James C. Bird have each received the first Schlumberger-Boston University Research Fellowship grants to pursue research in technical areas that have the potential to positively impact oil and gas extraction and environmental stewardship. Professor Zhang proposes the use of a mid-infrared microfluidic sensor to enable rapid chemical analysis with very small sample volumes, which would not only benefit the oil and gas industry but also aid in environmental monitoring and remediation. Professor Bird seeks to improve the accuracy and rapidity of industry tests that measure the wettability of rock in a reservoir, to better guide engineers in determining the most efficient oil recovery procedures for a given well.

• Making nanomanufacturing viable: Professor David Bishop and Dr. Matthias Imboden are exploring three potential pathways to high-speed, low cost and scalable manufacture of nanoscale devices ranging from integrated circuits to biosensors. As reported in Physics Today, the three strategies include resist-based nanolithography, commonly used today in the manufacture of semiconductor devices, nanoimprinting, a process akin to using a nanoscale rubber stamp, and a direct writing technique, controlling the placement of atoms with nanoscale precision. Nanomanufacturers of the future may place different technologies on a chip that can be activated at different times to achieve different purposes.

• Containing Ebola with nanotechnology: Professors Selim Unlu, Bennett Goldberg, and John Connor have developed a rapid, chip-scale photonic device that can detect viruses, including Ebola, on site. As reported in Forbes magazine, the device known as the Single Particle Interferometric Reflectance Imaging Sensor (SP-IRIS) detects pathogens by shining light from multi-color LED sources on viral nanoparticles bound to the sensor surface by a coating of virusspecific antibodies. Based on the team’s current rate of progress, a field-ready instrument could be ready to enter the medical marketplace in five years.

• Computational modeling for advanced energy systems: Professor Emily Ryan received a Hariri Institute Junior Fellowship this year for her work on developing computational models that focus on investigating degradation in high temperature fuel cells, the operation of advanced battery technologies, and the design and operation of post-combustion carbon capture technologies, all addressing the need for cleaner, more efficient and cost-effective energy systems.
