2022 BOOST CONFERENCE

About BUSINESS TODAY Business Today is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded by Steve Forbes in 1968. For the past 53 years, our goal has been to bridge the gap between influential business leaders, from all industries, and top undergraduate students from across the world. BT creates a dynamic forum in which students from all backgrounds can be educated and inspired.

BOOST Boost is a program within Business Today that aims to elevate the voices of Black undergraduate students in conversations of business and leadership through meaningful engagement with Black leaders, mentorship opportunities, and career planning. The 2021 Series will mark the event’s inaugural year.

Director’s Letter Dear Attendee, Welcome to Business Today’s 2022 Boost Conference! We’re thrilled to welcome you to our second annual conference - and our first ever in-person conference - and we can’t wait to meet all of you. From a pool of over 200 applicants from across the country, your accomplishments and insights stood out in the application process. We’re eager to learn more about each and every one of you.

This conference is the result of many months of hard work from our all-volunteer staff of 17 Princeton University students. I continue to be impressed with the vision and effort I witness from this team, and I’m extremely grateful for the dedication everyone has shown to making this the best conference it can be. Please be sure to thank the Boost team members you meet this weekend!

There are many important conversations to be had about the state of our professional world: how work and the employer-employee relationship will look post-Covid, the role Black talent can play in advancing equity and equality in our society, how ethical and moral principles play into our career choices. With this conference, you have the opportunity to discuss these and other issues with professionals and peers alike. I’m eager to hear where these conversations take you.

This weekend, I can only ask that you seize the opportunities in front of you. Take advantage of every aspect of the conference. Ask executives whatever questions come to mind, and be sure to thank them for their participation; introduce yourself to your fellow attendees; enjoy the city! There are many ways to appreciate the conference, and you may be surprised how many of the most valuable experiences you gain may come from outside of the conference rooms.

You represent the next generation of Black leaders, whether in business, politics, non-profit work, or elsewhere. We can’t wait to see what all of you do, and we hope this conference can play a role in helping you find the resources, insights, and confidence to reach your fullest potential.

Abigail Bossa is a junior at Long Island University. She will be graduating in 2023 with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and Psychology. She is very passionate about medical research and hopes to one day work in the biotechnology business industry. Abigail enjoys learning about science & business and hopes to combine her love for both into her dream career. She has completed and worked on multiple research projects within her university and through internships. She is now learning more about business opportunities (Biotechnology, Real Estate, Construction Development) and hopes to be successful and excel in this industry.

Aiza Coulter is a senior from Tucson, Arizona majoring in Marketing and minoring in Film & Television.

She is serving as the president of the Eller African American Honorary, a club dedicated to advocating and advancing the black community at the Eller College. She is also serving as the president of the Business of Entertainment Club. She is also working as a Front Desk Assistant at the Eller Undergraduate Programs Office as well as a Post-Production Assistant for Seelie Studios. In her free time, she enjoys watching Wes Anderson films, reading historical fiction, and listening to Sudan Archives.

Aimee Howard is a native of Birmingham, Alabama and is currently enrolled as a first-year at Harvard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Aimee plans to study government with a secondary in economics in hopes of one day becoming a Civil Rights Lawyer and Real Estate Agent. On campus she is involved with the first-year black table where she serves as social chair, the black pre-law society, and holds a part-time job at the Harvard Shop. Outside of the classroom, Aimee enjoys her Sunday morning walks to church, attending dance classes, and exploring the greater Boston Community.

I am Zara, an American-born, Nigerian-raised, freelance Creative Director and student at the Fashion Institute of Technology. My goals for the future include using the power of storytelling and art to stimulate conversation and eventual change.

I am a member of FIT’s Presidential Scholars Honors Program, as well as its honors society, ’. I am an ambitious and relentlessly driven person and have paved a path for myself ever since. I enjoy art fashion and philosophy but I believe that art should be a reflection of our society so politics, business real estate, and finance also interest me greatly.

My name is Aliya Byrd and I am a freshman Computer Science major and Art minor at Spelman College from Maplewood, New Jersey. I graduated from Columbia High School in Maplewood, NJ as an AP and Honors scholar. I was a member of the National Honors society, the Achieve Foundation, as well the leader of many arts and social justice related clubs. At university, I am a member of the Spelman Programming Team, a member of Code House, and I am on the publicity committee for SKIRTS (Sisters Keeping It Real Through Service), a volunteer based organization at Spelman. I have always enjoyed learning about innovation and technology, and my skills in tech range from the knowledge of programming languages and softwares.

2022 Andrea Bossi is a senior at Harvard from Chicago.

She studies psychology, neuroscience, and African American studies. Outside of class, she is involved in programs related to advocacy, poetry, and journalism.

After college, she plans on being a music, fashion, and beauty writer.

2023 Anthony Eduafo is a Junior at Soka University of America concentrating in Social & Behavioral Sciences. He’s originally from Ghana, West Africa and is interested in economic development especially on the continent of Africa. Anthony is passionate about improving access to healthcare in deprived communities and is currently working on a program named DiaPrep, to help provide free diabetes treatment to women from impoverished communities in Ghana. Anthony spent his last summer with the Healthcare Investment Banking Group at Bank of America in New York and will be returning this summer. He serves as Vice President of Vassar Sustainable Investment Fund and coheads Soka University of America’s African Students Association, which he founded a year ago. In his free time, Anthony is an avid reader and writer of non-fiction, a fan of Fireboy DML’s music an amateur pianist and weightlifter.

Asia Gray is a freshman from Prince George’s County, Maryland studying Computer Science at Columbia University. At Columbia, she is on the board of the Black Preprofessional Society, Science Review, and the Black Student Organization.

She is also a apart of several computer science mentoring programs on campus. In her free time she adores listening to Solange and reading poetry.

Bethany Beru is a sophomore at the University of Rochester currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Finance and a minor in Legal Studies. Beru strives to create stronger, more close-knit communities on campus by serving as the events and programming chair in the Pan-African Students Association, and as the captain of a dance group called Axum. In her spare time, she likes to listen to podcasts, go to the gym, and enjoy time with her roommates.

On Howard’s campus, she serves as Miss Afrique of Howard’s African Students Association. She is also on the Steering Committee and a Team Leader for Alternative Spring Break, an organization that allows students to serve during their Spring Break. She is also the Social Media Coordinator for Howard’s Official Dining Page.

In her free time, Peace enjoys reading, volunteering, watching Netflix shows, and making YouTube/Tiktok videos for incoming and current college students.

Charlotte Petty is a first year at UC Berkeley with intentions of majoring in Environmental Economics and Policy with a minor in French. She enjoys being a philanthropist in her local community and partakes in youth projects in her free time. With intentions of becoming a strong advocate for environmental crisis, she hopes to incorporate that into the world of economics and business. She is a member of HUBBA (Haas Undergrad Black Business Association) and CALPRIG, which is a club for environmentalist. When she’s not busy with school or extracurriculars she loves lounging around and/or calling her five sisters!

Elizabeth is a rising senior and international student at the University of Rochester majoring in Public Health. She is passionate about public speaking and helping low-income community college students receive academic support and funding to excel and complete their college education. This passion led her to found her own organization, which she is currently developing through the Innov8 startup program.

On-campus Elizabeth is currently serving as the Vice-President of the Douglass Leadership House. She is also a Forbes Under 30 Scholar, Forte Foundation Rising Star, member of the Duke DPT Summer Discovery cohort, and Up To Us Campaign Team Leader.

2024 Emmanuel Fiagbe is a sophomore from Ghana majoring in Economics at Soka University of America. He is currently on the Student Advisory Board of Hive Diversity, an organization that connects the next gen of diverse talent to companies and is a member of D.E Shaw Group’s Momentum Fellowship. He spent his past summer doing an Economic Research program at Uchicago’s Becker Friedman Institute and an International Finance Scholar’s program at IE Business School, Spain. He would be joining Jefferies this summer as an Investment Banking Summer Analyst. He is passionate about sustainable fashion and enjoys movies in his free time.

Emmanuella Nsiah is currently a fourth year at the University of Virginia majoring in Commerce with a concentration in Information Technology. She is on the exec board for the Black Commerce Student Network and is passionate about promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion around campus. She also mentors historically underrepresented students and helps provide them with resources to help them succeed in their academic and professional careers. Outside of the classroom she enjoys eating out with friends, listening to music, reading, and playing with her cat Peach who she adopted during the pandemic.

He is passionate about the intersectionality of geopolitics and the financial markets as well as the fashion industry. On campus, he is involved with the Baker Retailing Center as well as the Emerging Markets club where he sits at the Private Equity and Real Estate committee board. For fun, he likes to write short stories and take meditative walks along the Schuylkill River while listening to Alan Walker.

Francesca Raoelison is originally from Madagascar and a senior concentrating in Sociology, through the Organizational Studies Track and Entrepreneurship at Brown University. She is a founder of Omena, a non-profit organization committed to increasing emotional abuse awareness starting in her home country Madagascar’s educational system by providing tools for students to combat and stand up to abuse Their work has been featured by MTV, The Boston Globe, supported by the Clinton Foundation and Forbes Under 30.

Francesca is a TEDx speaker and was named RI Inno’s 25 under 25.

At Brown, in addition to working with Nelson Center for Entrepreneurship, she is a Social Innovation Fellow with the Swearer Center and the Social Enterprise Greenhouse (SEG), a Social Entrepreneurship TA, and also works as a community dialogue facilitator.

In her free time, you will catch her enjoying singing or outdoor activities such as hiking, going to the beach, or biking.

George Birikorang is a freshman from Accra, Ghana majoring in Computer Science and Energy Resources Engineering at Stanford University. Enthusiastic about entrepreneurship, George has been the Youth Organizer for “Beginning-The-Year-Right Summit,” a business-inspired conference that draws in entrepreneurs and community locals to talk about venture-capital and financial management, since 2019. He is currently involved with Stanford Real Estate Club, Stanford Global Entrepreneurs, and Stanford Black Scientists and Engineers. George is a FLEEF Scholar at Ghana’s Future Leaders Educational Empowerment Foundation and a Leland Scholar at Stanford. In his free time, he binges on Suits, dances to Afrobeats, and plays soccer.

Ghaicha Aboubacar Ahe is a sophomore from Niger majoring in Economics and International Studies, and minoring in Data Science at Macalester College. She is the Co-chair of Afrika!, a student organization that aspires to support and empower African identifying students at a Predominantly White Institution. She is also involved as a Resident Advisor as well as an International Economics Preceptor on campus. She speaks five languages and is working on drawing a children’s book to represent the people in her hometown. In her free time, she enjoys drawing, watching documentaries about different places and cultures, and listening to Afro Beats.

He is currently a software developer at NUSolar, a student-led Northwestern organization aimed at designing, manufacturing and racing the next generation of solar powered electric vehicles. He is also working with a startup team as a cofounder and an app developer for Airyder, a company which mainly serves as a student marketplace for buying and renting vehicles on campus. He loves binge watching anime and also listens to all kinds of music.

Jeremiah Pouncy is a third-year Animal Science student, with a dual-minor in Entrepreneurship & Chemistry at North Carolina A&T. His passion in life lies within nature. From animals to plants to humans, absolutely everything about nature fascinates him. He is also the creator of the podcast “Thru Jeremiah’s Eyes”, which stems from his belief that everyone has a unique voice and unique interpretation of life. Additionally, he is interested in Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) and is currently in the beginning stages of curating a consulting business to educate and integrate this technology within various businesses models.

2023 Jordanella Maluka is a 3rd-year Economics, Data Science, and Global Health student at Macalester College. She aims to become an exemplary global leader contributing to economic development and growth.

Jordanella voices her ideas with clarity and confidence.

This led her to her first TEDx-talk about the mineral conflict in the DRC, to her being invited to attend the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in 2018, and to her position as President-elect of her student government, elected with the uppermost responsibility and trust to represent and advocate for her peers. She is excited to meet and learn from everyone at this conference!

Kaira Mack is a sophomore from Philadelphia, PA majoring in Psychology and minoring in Environment, Economy, Development, and Sustainability at The Ohio State University. She is involved in a number of student organizations such as the Undergraduate Student Government’s Black Caucus where she serves as the Associate Vice Chair specializing in Policy on administrative levels. She currently works as an intern with Energy Services & Sustainability on her campus where she supports a variety of projects including zero waste.

Outside of her studies, she enjoys taking care of her plants, listening to R&B, and scrolling through TikTok. Through participating in the Boost Conference, she hopes to share her unique perspective as a creative, learn more about the world of business, and contribute to the empowerment of Black talent.

2024 Kidanewold Demesie is a sophomore student at La Salle University double majoring in Computer Science and Economics with an interest in FinTech. He is the chair of professional development at Ethio-Philly Young Adult Association, a community club helping Ethiopian and Eritrean immigrants in Pennsylvania.

He is also involved on-campus at La Salle as a subject tutor for computer science, math, and economics classes. Moreover, he is also a career peer at La Salle Career Center. In his free time, Kidanewold enjoys watching soccer, going on a roller-coaster ride and listening to hip-hop.

Mark’s desire to learn and explore new experiences took him to live across North America, Asia, Africa, and Europe. In his free time, he plays tennis or reads a non-fiction book.

Maya Harrell is a Sophomore from the Chicagoland area majoring in Biomedical Engineering and minoring in Spanish at Georgia Institute of Technology.

She has been the Philanthropy chair for the Society of Women Engineers for 2 years and has planned volunteer events and organized successful fundraisers and a gala for 70+ students. She is also a residential assistant, an incoming Sophomore Summer Business Analyst at McKinsey & Company, a mentor for students in her living-learning community, and an active member of NSBE. In her free time, she enjoys watching thrillers on Netflix, listening to Masego and Doja Cat, and weightlifting.

“Melvin is a senior Finance major and a Managing Director of Relations for Hillside Ventures. He has been previously involved in the Finance Society while also helping create a financial literacy club at UCONN targeting underprivileged youth. He serves as the President of Business Leaders of UCONN where they hope to foster community amongst BIPOC students within the Business School. Aside from Hillside VC and BLU, he spends his time working out and meditating. He’s an avid history geek who loves cultures and hopes to see all the world one day. Melvin will start his post-graduate career at CITIBANK as an HR analyst and hopes to eventually work for a non-profit organization.

Natnael “Nate” Azmera was born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and came to the U.S. this past August.

He is a sophomore at Pitzer College double majoring in Data Science and Economics-Accounting. Nate is very interested in the intersection of modern technology with economics and finance, and will be joining Meta (previously called Facebook) as a Data Science Intern over the summer. He’s also heavily involved in CTP, a non-profit organization which aims to help Ethiopian high school students apply to U.S. universities, and is now working in the finance section of the leadership team.

Nicholas Black is a sophomore from Henrietta, NY majoring in Politics at Pomona College. He is the Co-President of Divest Claremont Colleges, an organization advocating for Pomona College to divest from fossil fuels and reinvest into clean energy sources. He also serves as the Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Team Lead for Sunrise Claremont Colleges, a group that organizes students to advocate for pro-environment legislation. He enjoys getting outdoors, listening to alternative music, and thrifting.

Nixon Chege is a Kenyan entrepreneur, environmentalist and management enthusiast. He is a sophomore at the University of Rochester pursuing his Bachelor’s degree in Business with a minor in Organizational Psychology. He has had vast experience in management and leadership, including being the CEO of Umfana Global and Strategic Planning Manager for Union for Business and Entrepreneurial Development in Africa (UBEDA). He was selected to be a 2021 Forbes 30 under 30 scholar and is also the recipient of the 2019 Diversity Award presented by the African Leadership Academy. For leisure, Nixon enjoys curating creative works, writing and mentoring others.

A proud Chicago native, Nneka is a Posse Foundation Scholar and senior at Agnes Scott College studying political science and business management. Nneka serves as a Student Member on the Board of Trustees, Legislative Aide at the Georgia House of Representatives, and President of Agnes Scott’s chapter of IGNITE -- motivating young women to become the next generation of political leaders.

Nneka’s interests lie at the intersection of politics, business, and empowerment as evidenced by her public speaking platform, civic engagement, and mission of including those who have been excluded and hearing those who feel they no longer have a voice.

Noelle Fall is currently a senior at The University of Alabama pursuing an undergraduate degree.

She is majoring in Marketing and minoring in her self-designed minor, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Intending to develop skills related to DEI, she hopes to create spaces where everyone feels they are more than just a number in a statistic. As a student of color, her end goal is to empower the people who surround her by truly creating a sense of belonging in those spaces.

2025 Perri Jackson is a freshman from Prince George’s County, Maryland majoring in Computer and Information Sciences at Spelman College located in Atlanta, Georgia. She has been obsessed with technology for the majority of her life. She graduated high school with a 4.2 GPA and was an active member of Black Girls Code, National Honor Society, and National Society of Black Engineers. At her university, she is an active member of CodeHouse Scholars Initiative and Girls Who Code. She enjoys statistics and coding and in the future, she plans to use her degree in the field of data science.

2024 Phyia Walker majors in Communications/Advertising as a Marist College sophomore. From Brooklyn, New York, Phyia’s a fearless young woman that isn’t afraid to try new things. She participated in the Women’s Rowing team, while also being a Resident Assistant for a freshman dorm. Outside of school, Phyia enjoys self improvement in every aspect of her life which includes mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally. She believes in building yourself up before presenting yourself to the world. Despite her interest in self development, she never forgets to build up those around her with her positive and uplifting energy.

Roy Nwogor is a sophomore from the Metro Atlanta area majoring in biomedical engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Within his university, he is one of the lead student-tutors for the Georgia Tech Athletic Association, where he teaches precalculus and calculus to student-athletes involved in a variety of sports at the university. Roy is also involved with the Georgia Tech African Student Union, and the Georgia Tech Society of Black Engineers. In his free time, he enjoys weightlifting, playing basketball, listening to Rod Wave, and watching his favorite sports teams lose almost every other night.

Sean Summers is a freshman from the Richmond area majoring in Finance at Georgetown University. He is a board member for Blackgen Capital Hoyas, Georgetown’s Premier Investment Fund. He is an analyst in Georgetown University Student Investment Fund while also founding Georgetown’s PC Club.

Victoria Hopkins is a senior international business and marketing major with a minor in Spanish at the University of South Carolina. Currently a marketing consultant for Lionsgate, Victoria has also worked as operational and instructional staff for the Carolina athletic and pep bands. She is interested in a career in the performing arts and spectator sports industries, particularly orchestra and sports administration. Victoria is an active member of Kappa Kappa Psi, national honorary band service fraternity, having served as treasurer for the 2020 session.

Tiasia Saunders is a sophomore majoring in Media, Journalism, & Film and minoring in English at Howard University. She currently work for the Hilltop as a staff writer and the Truth Be Told Newsletter as the editor-in- chief. She longs to become an accomplished author of several books one day and to be the editor-in-chief of any kind of publication. She has always loved writing and won the Young Author’s competition three years in a row in elementary school and was selected as one of the three students to participate in the VHS writing competition in high school. She enjoys reading, writing, and crocheting.
