August Things to do Naas, founder of WidenI-77.org, at Newsmakers Breakfast Aug. 13 Kurt Naas, founder of the Widen I-77 anti-toll movement, will speak at Cornelius Today’s Newsmakers Breakfast Aug. 13 at The Peninsula Club.

The Cornelius resident launched WidenI-77 three years ago when the conventional wisdom was that tolls were the only way for the NCDOT to add capacity to I-77 in the foreseeable future.

WidenI-77 has filed suit to block the public-private partnership between NCDOT and Cintra, an American subisdiary of Ferrovial, an international company based in Spain. Naas is familiar with virtually every aspect of the toll plan, and has worked closely with Sen. Jeff Tarte in his efforts to defund the plan legislatively.

Tarte, however, says his bill in Raleigh

is all but dead, shining the spotlight on the WidenI-77.org lawsuit and other administrative avenues, including the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization.

The Newsmakers Breakfasts are an open forum, complete with breakfast and focused discussion on a timely topic.

Habitate with humanity: We're all in this together A conversation with the head of Our Towns Habitat for Humanity

By Dru Willis “Rent is crushing the American dream for more families in the U.S. than ever before,” Jeff Porter says.

The executive director of Our Towns Habitat for Humanity here in Cornelius cites a Time Magazine article which states more than one in four renters in the United States have to use at least half their family income to pay for housing and utilities. This statistic is just as relevant in Cornelius, according to Porter, as the cost of rent here continues to rise because of simple supply and demand economics.

“We are in a very populated area, a growing area, so landlords can charge more,” Porter says.

According to 2013 US Census data, of 26,898 citizens in Cornelius there are approximately 2,300 people below the poverty line. It is for these 8.5 percent that Cornelius-based Our Towns Habitat for Humanity strive to do something.

Porter and the rest of the Habitat family do not use the term “affordable housing” for the remedy. Instead Habitat aims to build quality and affordable “workforce housing,” because the people who live in the affordable homes are those who represent the workforce itself—school teachers, police officers, medical technicians. People, Porter says, that the community sees and works with every day.

“Because the working class needs an affordable place to live,” he states.

The basic qualifications for a Habitat home are 1) the need for decent, affordable housing, 2) ability to pay for the home, 3) willingness to partner with Habitat.

Our Towns Habitat for Humanity recently merged with Habitat for Humanity of Iredell County, doubling the service area of Our Towns Habitat to now cover Cornelius and all of northern Mecklenburg County plus now all of Iredell County. The total population in the Habitat footprint is now about 250,000 people, Porter says.

“The good news is that Habitat International is doing great. We’ve served over a million families and we are really reaching worldwide. Habitat Charlotte is phenomenal," Porter says. Habitat Charlotte and Our Towns Habitat are

two of 14 Habitats in the country who were awarded the Affiliates of Distinction.

The hope for 2015 is to serve 45 families this year, building 13 new homes and repairing 32 homes. Since 1980, Our Towns Habitat has built 52 homes in Cornelius alone, with five of the 13 under construction in 2015 in Cornelius.

“We are going to really be pushing it. We have never done this amount before,” Porter says.

This will come as the average mortgage for a new Habitat home is $400, far lower than the average rent of $800 in Cornelius and the area, according to Porter. The average mortgage payment of all the homes in the Our Towns footprint is $244 per month because the mortgage relies on building costs at the time of construction and construction has occurred for three decades.

Habitat is pushing itself so hard because there is a great need for the work to be done.

“We are in a growing area. And it’s good to be a growing area. But along with growth comes need. Every year

there are more and more people in need of affordable housing. So we are continuing to try and meet that need of providing affordable housing for everybody,” Porter explains.

Reaching out to donors is not a burden because of the reputation Habitat for Humanity has built over the four decades since Millard and Linda Fuller founded the organization in Georgia.

“Since 1976 we have proven that we use people’s money wisely. And so, because of the reputation of Habitat, people trust us and there is also tangible evidence,” Porter says. “Some nonprofits, you are not able to see some of the tangible evidence. But you can actually see 13 houses in nine months.”

Harder for Habitat is showing people the value of one family—why people should donate and provide money or time that only one family will benefit from. The truth is, however, that one family is not the only benefactor of repairs to an existing home or the building of a new home.

Last year, property taxes from Habitat homes generated $51,000 in tax revenue for Cornelius, Porter says, taxes

which directly affect schools, roads, emergency services, and other things.

Plus, after 10 years, the homeowners can—if they wish—sell their home and then have equity for a new home, or in 20 years have their home completely paid off.

“And we say that it’s a permanent solution to a chronic problem,” Porter says.

The equity helps break the poverty cycle so the owners can send their children to college, have money for a new home, or find other financial stabilities.

Plus, people who own their homes are more involved with the community and community organizations, making neighborhoods that much safer because people know their neighbors longer, Porter says.

“The reason Habitat values home ownership is because it breaks the poverty cycle...because it helps the home owners build equity,” Porter explains.

“Most folks in our country have found that home ownership is the basic way they go about helping increase their financial strengths. It appreciates in value over the years”

Mayor Chuck Travis outlines achievements, goals Mayor Chuck Travis, who is running unopposed for a second term at the head of local government, says fixing the aesthetics of the Exit 28 bridge, providing lake access for residents and planning an arts center are among his goals during the next two years.

Travis says achieving those goals "will help with economic development and the quality of life for residents."

He outlined a number of achievements during the past two years, all of them accomplished while Cornelius maintained "the lowest tax rate of any municipality of comparable size and service levels in the state."

A nationally renowned architect, Travis lives on Mollypop Lane with his wife Janice. He is the founder of Housing Studio in Charlotte. In May he was elevated to Fellowship in the American Institute of Architects, the highest honor bestowed by the organization.

He served two terms on the Town Board before running unopposed for mayor in 2013. We asked him the following questions as the campaign season gets under way: Q: What are you proudest of in terms of your service as Mayor of Cornelius.

• Transitioning the first response 911 calls for Lake Patrol from Charlotte/ Mecklenburg Police to the Cornelius Police Department. This will provide 24/7 response to issues on our lake and protect our residents year round.

• Implementation of the first release of Bond dollars for transportation improvements, greenway construction and park improvements and much needed park maintenance.

• Updates in our 911 call center to improve efficiency and levels of service from our first responders.

• Purchasing a new ladder truck for our Volunteer Fire Department, and training/fitness equipment to keep our firefighters at their best.

• Expanding our Community Garden.

• Continuing to build sidewalks to promote walkability.

• Working with the County to finally have public swimming back in our Town at Ramsey Creek.

• Refurbishing fishing ponds at Robbins Park from essentially “dead ponds”.

• Expanding our public arts program.

• Being fiscally responsible with our town budget.

Q: Top four goals for your next term • Fix/complete the bridge aesthetics to create a true gateway to our town.

• Successfully plan a new Arts Center for the historic part of our town and prepare for the next bond release, in the 2019 time frame.

• Invest in the renovation of Main Street to encourage economic development along the corridor that connects our town to Davidson and Huntersville.

• Public access to our lake for all residents.

Q: Grade Cornelius in terms of economic development • Our entire region is falling behind in attracting new businesses. A lot of it has to do with the current situation with our failing interstate. Connectivity is key, not just to Charlotte, but to all of our towns in the North Meck Region.

• As you know, undeveloped land is a premium in Cornelius. I think great opportunities lie in redevelopment. We have aging and empty big box shopping centers that will transition to new uses – new commercial development that includes retail and office space that will ultimately help our community be selfsustaining.

• I think we have untapped opportunities with NASCAR that need to be ex-

plored – we should explore synergies with the teams, owners and drivers who are located and living in our town.

• In addition, the craft brewers in our town are taking off with great products, tasting rooms and opportunities to create attractions/destinations for visitors.

Q: How does economic development here play a role in relieving congestion on I-77 south to Charlotte?

• I think we will experience a decrease in property values, loss of business development and a reduction in the quality of life, if we do not successfully fix our interstate. We need to invest in upgrading

the parallel transportation routes within our region that offer alternative routes to the interstate, both Highways 21 and 115. In addition, we need to build a new Parkway for North-South connectivity between Huntersville and Mooresville as well as improve the East-West connectivity in all of our towns.

• The more we can become a self-supportive community, the less we have to depend on daily commutes to other areas in the region — both north and south.

Cashing in on grocery store competition

brought down prices at Harris Teeter, which also spruced up even before Florida-based Publix invaded the Charlotte market two years ago. Meanwhile, Kroger bought Harris Teeter in a $2.4 billion deal. Bi-Lo is long gone, as is Lowe’s Foods.

Across the Charlotte region, both Food Lion and Harris Teeter have about 20 percent of the market. Upstart Publix, according to the Chain Store Guide’s 2015 Grocery Industry Market Share Report, has 5 percent. In Cornelius, we’re guessing it’s higher.

So there are three big chains in good ol’ 28031.

Some items at Publix seem to come and go (eggplant parmigiana and hummus with beets). Speaking of beets, the

Attention Cornelius shoppers: Now that there are three major grocery chains in town, are prices down? Has service improved?

Yes, and yes, according to our secret shopper, Mrs. Cornelius T. O’Day. Many people remember the days when Cornelius had two Harris Teeters within a mile of each other. “Why, I remember when I could purchase animal feed at the Bi-Lo,” O’Day said.

Of course years ago, there was Cashion’s Grocery where the muchbeloved owner would say hello to shoppers.

But with the arrival of Publix earlier this year, there has been a seismic shift in the local shopping experience.

Competition from Publix has Mrs. Cornelius T. O’Day, with Buster and Gidget

salad bar at Harris Teeter is hard to beat. And parents of young adults with different abilities will always appreciate the progressive approach to hiring at Harris Teeter. The fried chicken at Food Lion is the best.

We sent Mrs. O’Day to all three supermarkets to compare prices on the same 13 items and provide her impressions of all three shopping experiences.

• All three are clean, pleasant places to shop.

• Harris Teeter and Food Lion seem to have wider aisles.

• Fellow shoppers were the nicest at the Food Lion.

• Customer service at Publix is very friendly, while Harris Teeter is catching up fast. Not so much Food Lion.

Regarding Mrs. O’Day’s choices of what to buy—she looked at Cornelius’ collective waistlines and opted for low fat and low sugar options.

“Kids being kids, I did buy Cape Cod Potato Chips but they were 40 percent reduced fat. Nevertheless, I shall instruct my children to increase their morning calisthenics,” Mrs. O’Day said.

The bottom line is that Publix was the cheapest for Mrs. O’Day’s grocery list: $43.88 vs. $44.71 at Food Lion and $45.93 at Harris Teeter.

Who knows what would happen by adding a bag of potatoes, prepared food, lunch meats or ice cream.

Regarding the food: Mrs. O’Day made much-appreciated deliveries to Loaves and Fishes and Angels & Sparrows. The editorial department ate all the potato chips; sales ate two boxes of Triscuits. Mrs. O’Day, with bathroom tissue in her arms, was dismayed when it was explained to her that there will not actually be toll booths on I-77 which she can TP during low traffic periods.

A note about Mrs. O’Day’s shopping list: She avoided sale items to make the comparisons as fair as possible.

Fresh Market

If your house manager has the day off and you must shop for groceries, you will likely find your way to Fresh Market. Located in a former Harris Teeter store on Torrence Chapel, Fresh Market carries everything from Audubon Society bird seed ($4.99 a bag) to locally farmed zucchini ($1.99 a lb.). There is a great selection of olive oils, as well as nuts in bulk and fresh flowers. An 8.82 oz. box of Cipriani spaghetti is $7.99, jumbo shrimp (26-30 count) was recently $16.99 per pound. — Rev. Tony Moreau For a while at least, life for a new associate pastor was a three-ring circus.

Literally. Rev. Tony Moreau of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, once worked for Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

Of course he wasn’t an acrobat— Moreau still has the build of a powerful nose guard from his high school football days—but he really did work for the traveling circus, managing inventory control for them as well as the American Gladiators Live Tour.

This was all before he decided to commit himself to God, enroll at Duke Divinity School and become an ordained minister.

Rev. Moreau, 50, is one of three pastors at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, one of the largest and oldest churches in North Mecklenburg County. He and his wife, Erin, and their two boys live in Caldwell Station, just down Hwy. 115 from the 1,750 member church.

After graduating from high school in 1983 and a stint in the Marine Corps, Moreau attended college off and on, going for a semester or two at a time for 20 years—along the way working on oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico and for a newspaper in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

“After meeting my wife, I determined that I would finish school. I went back to college to become a high school

teacher and coach. To be honest this was a compromise I made with God. I had known since I was a teen I had a calling on my life, a sense that I was supposed to make a difference in the world,” Moreau says.

He approaches life and theology with a certain amount of ecumenicism. He was raised Baptist in Louisiana, where Catholicism is more or less the order of the day. “Being raised Baptist with a Pentecostal background in a Catholic area…you had this mixture of theologies and approaches,” Moreau says.

Nothing quite “felt like home for me,” until he met Erin, a “cradle Methodist.”

“I fell in love with the combination of the big tent, people on the extreme left of politics and extreme right of politics.

It seems to coexist and you can feel at home,” Moreau says.

He finished Duke Divinity in 2008, and pastored Rehoboth United Methodist in Henderson for the next two years. He went on to Nesbitt’s Chapel United Methodist in Fairview, and then Salem United Methodist near Forrest City, from 2013 to 2015 where he was senior pastor.

His exact title at Mt. Zion is associate pastor, pastoral care and adult christian education, which means congregational care, visiting people in the hospital or meeting with those who seek spiritual counseling.

New industry brewing in Cornelius When Bottled & Tapped opens on West Catawba next to the Waffle House in the next few weeks, will be fulfilling part of a dream. The new craft beer and bottle shop gets him a step closer to one day opening a micro-brewery.

“We like Cornelius in general because of the proximity to the lake. This shop is about the right size, the traffic in terms of just being noticed is good and it is a cool place,” says Johnson.

The 49-year-old was born and raised in Colorado—Mecca in the craft brewing world—and spent most of his career in construction and construction consulting, and brewed beer at home for years.

So when he and his wife Shelly Stevenson were looking to start a new chapter in their lives, they came to Charlotte. “We looked everywhere, Charlotte, Weddington, Pineville, Matthews and Mooresville,” Johnson says.

Johnson and Stevenson are spending $50,000 to open Bottled & Tapped in an intimate 1,000 square foot space.

If you get the feeling there are a lot of new beer establishments in Cornelius, you're right. Going by names such as Ass Clown, Bayne Brewing and Cornelius Draft House, these cozy pubs— most are on the order of 1,500 square feet—offer a wide range of fresh and unique tasting brews, some made right on the premises.

There are five in Cornelius alone, and it looks like more are on the way.

They take one of two forms: a microbrewery, where the beer is prepared on the premises, or a bottle shop, which is a retail craft beer store where a tasting area is provided for beers brewed elsewhere. It's an increasingly popular concept in the evolving world of liquid libation. There are over 500

microbreweries and brewpubs in the United States.

Wes Lucas, co-owner of Cornelius Drafthouse, has that heady feeling of any new entrepreneur in spades. Locals hop over from nearby neighborhoods like Jetton Cove and Magnolia Estates.

He stocks more than 200 varieties of beer right now, although the watering hole opened in June.

While Lake Norman's economic development news seems to be centered in Huntersville, beer is big business.

According to the U.S. Brewers Association, small and independent American craft brewers contributed $33.9 billion to the U.S. economy in 2012. Since then the craft beer business has exploded.

According to the Boulder, Colo.based Brewers Association, the overall beer production grew just .5 percent last year. Craft beer consumption grew 14.6 percent in 2014.

Business is good locally too. D9 Brewing Co. on Treynorth Drive will soon distribute their brews in Raleigh thanks to a new agreement with Mims Distributing Co. The 10-barrel microbrewery is releasing its first bottled beer, a limited release of Viking Fraoch Scottish Sour.

Although microbreweries are a hot commodity today in the US, their popularity actually began in England during the 1970s, and then spread to the US and other countries. In some instances the breweries also feature a limited number of food items, though the "suds" are clearly the main attraction.

There’s a heady optimism among local pub owners. “North Carolina is getting where Colorado has been,” Johnson says. “Critical mass is happening, where people become sophisticated about the product, and where people push the frontiers of beer.”

Cozy Italian eatery will open in Jetton Village Trattoria, an “old school” Italian restaurant, will open soon in Jetton Village under the ownership of Sam Marshall, the former manager at Peninsula China Bistro.

This is not much of a leap for the 40-year-old South African. She worked virtually all her adult life in Italian restaurants before going to the Bistro.

She’s been in the U.S. since 1998.

“This will be all house-made, old school Italian,” she says. “I’ll be using as much local produce and product as possible. Think of those small cozy European-style restaurants, like on a side street in Italy, lights on the patio, music.”

Marshall is taking over 1,400 square feet of space recently occupied by the Original NY Bagel which is moving to Magnolia Plaza Shopping Center.

“I love food and I love feeding people,” she says. Marshall is investing more than $10,000 in the new enterprise.

Trattoria will share an outside patio, complete with table and chairs, with the Cornelius Drafthouse. In fact, beers will come from their neighbor, which opened in June. Wines at Tratorria will

be Italian vintages.

She says price points will be right in the median, “not $8 and not $20. The most expensive would be veal, $18 for dinner.”

The average pasta will be around $12. There will be vegan as well as glutenfree options.

Vandalism at Confederate Monument July 20. The 105-year-old Confederate Veterans Monument in front of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church has been vandalized. Cornelius Police covered the monument with a blue tarp around 7 am today.

The monument, which is not on church property, was vandalized almost exactly a month after the shootings at historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C. One of the phrases on the monument said: “Stop honoring white supremacy.”

The church does not own or maintain the monument, which was erected in a different day and time.

According to the Commemorative Landscapes of North Carolina web site,

the monument stands in front of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church “where local men enlisted for the Confederate war effort and commemorates the local Confederate dead.”

The soldier stands at parade rest, facing north with his rifle resting on the ground.

According to the website, the “column is mounted on a dark, polished square granite block that is inscribed on the front face. This structure rests atop a capped granite plinth which has a bas-relief image of a cannon on the front face, bas-relief inscriptions on the sides, and the bas-relief image of crossed swords on the rear face. The entire monument structure sits on three-step base of rough cut stone.”

The monument cost $10,000 in 1910.

The monument to Confederate soldiers on Zion Ave. has been a community landmark in Cornelius since 1910. It was built by contributions from across the community and it is on private property.

Our heart breaks at racial injustice or antagonism whether it is in our front yard or far away. Because the longstanding characteristic of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and United Methodist faith is a welcome for all, it was very sad to discover words of racial tension on neighboring property.

The next step to restore the damage to the monument is in the hands of community leaders. On behalf of the church, it would be our hope and prayer that the whole community will join us in modeling relationships of mutual respect, concern and care for all.

Mayor Travis running unopposed; only seven people running for five seats on Town Board July 17. Mayor Chuck Travis will run unopposed for another term.

Filing for public office closed this afternoon, with four incumbents and three political hopefuls running for the non-partisan board of commissioners. Incumbent Bruce Trimbur, who was appointed to the board when John Bradford went to the NC House of Representatives, is not running.

The incumbents who are running again are Jim Duke, Dave Gilroy, Thurman Ross and Woody Washam.

The three who hope to be elected for the first time are Denis P. Bilodeau, a first-time candidate, and Michael F. Miltich and J.R. Mount, both of whom ran in 2013. Miltich came in sixth in a crowded 10-candidate contest.

Tolls, of course, will be a major issue. There are nuances around tolls—the issue isn’t just for tolls or against them. This toll plan, though, is viewed as an accident waiting to happen for Cornelius. Express-toll lanes apparently bypass Catawba Avenue.

“The I-77 toll issue and this plan is ver y bad for the businesses and threatens the quality of life in Cornelius. With the momentum I see in this grassroots effort, I certainly would not want to be a candidate for the local election in November on the wrong side of this issue,” said John Hettwer, a former chairman of the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce.

Meanwhile, Mayor Travis said that he is requesting that Cornelius Town staff submit two projects to the

Technical Coordinating Committee of the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization by the end of July. He is calling for: • General purpose lanes for I-77 from Exit 28 to Exit 36 (this project will most likely be included regardless) and • General purpose lanes for I-77 from Exit 28 to I-485 / Exit 19 (a project that has never received ranking).

The TCC will make recommendations to the CR TPO to send to the NCDOT to begin the ranking pro-

cess in November, 2015.

“Initial results will be provided in March, 2016 and released for Public Comment in April, 2016,” Travis said.

“I firmly believe that our interstate is broken and that it needs to be fixed. No one disagrees with this premise. Saying ‘no’ to tolls must come with another method that is viable to fund the improvement in a timely manner,” Travis said.

Gov. McCror y has publicly stated this week that his proposed Transportation Bond will not include I-77 improvements.

“The option that I am proposing is the best option we have for consideration. I stand with my board and I will continue to work with them to find solutions to fix I-77 for our Town and Region,” the mayor said.

The process will ultimately rank these two projects for funding if the P3 Toll Lane does not move for ward.

News-e Cornelius family hosts exchange student from Spain July 24. The Wells family from Jetton Cove played host to Iker Garcia de Vicuna, a 14-year-old exchange student from Bilboa, Spain. The Wells were one of three local families in the Lake Norman area housing teens from Spain as part of the Hi5-Linx exchange organization. For Iker (pronounced eake-er) it was a fascinating month.

“I found the people here very friendly,” he said during an exclusive interview with Cornelius Today. “We had great fun at the pool, the park, and in the lake too.”

Iker said the one aspect of Cornelius life which took him by surprise was the fact that “people need a car to pretty much go or do anything.” With twin sisters and a brother back home, he will be telling them about the “delicious pizza” at Brooklyn South. “We never have pepperoni pizza like that back home.”

His stay was an equally rewarding experience for the Wells family. “Our son, Alec, is about the same age so that worked out real well” said Gina Wells.

Bilodeau gets Rotary’s first Cashion service award July 22. The Rotary Club of North Mecklenburg has announced the winner of the inaugural Robert T. Cashion Community Service Award: Denis BILODEAU Bilodeau, a North Meck Rotarian since 2006. He is the president of Aquesta Insurance Services and a candidate for the Cornelius Town Board.

Bilodeau was president of the club in 2010-2011. In addition to being service chairperson, he is a member of the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce board, as well as a Cornelius Parks, Arts, Recreation and Culture commissioner. He is also is a long-time supporter of Big Day at the Lake.

The award is named for the late Robert T. Cashion, the retailing entrepreneur who was also a charter member and past president of the Rotary Club of North Mecklenburg.

According to Melissa Pinto, program coordinator for the Hi-5 outreach, that’s done on purpose. “We match the students with host families that have children around the same ages with similar interests. Besides learning about the cul-

ture and maybe a few Spanish words, we are hoping to build lifelong friendships that cross borders and oceans,” she said.

Lake Norman was the site of the largest junior tennis tour nament in USTA North Carolina’s history. Over the past few days, facilities in Cornelius, Davidson and Huntersville hosted 600 junior players who prepared to compete in the 2015 Junior Team Tennis (JTT) State Championship. Ninety-two teams across nine age/skill levels registered for this year’s state championship. Players ranged from an 8 & Under category to kids 18 & Under. The host site for the tournament was River Run Tennis Club in Davidson. Matches were also be played at Holbrook Park, Hopewell High School, Hough High School, Jetton Park and North Mecklenburg Park.

The championship match was held on Sunday.

Renovation dream team transforms historic home

Before While not perfect, the Burton family decided to purchase their 1947 home in historic Dilworth because of its desirable location and because they had vision and immediately saw the home’s renovation potential, a gift not all buyers possess. Rather than starting with an architect first, this family selected a team to work with and renovate the house into their dream home. Their team consisted of architect Don Duffy, Henderson Building Group (licensed general contractor), and interior designer Kristen Enwright to collaborate and address the homes short comings and bring their vision to life.

Problem: The original kitchen in this home was extremely small and compartmentalized from the rest of the home. The Burton’s desired a more open floor plan with more space for entertaining. The original home had three bedrooms and an addition was done to the home in the 1980’s to add a second floor that included three more bedrooms and a bathroom.

Solution: The Burton’s remodeling team came up with a brilliant plan to reconfigure the floor plan by converting two of three bedrooms on the main floor into a new open concept kitchen/ living space and converted the former 10x15’ kitchen into a mud room and

laundry space conveniently located next to the home’s exterior entrance.

This new floor plan is much more functional and their general contractor was able to utilize their existing plumbing from the former kitchen to plumb the new laundry space.

Taking the team approach to renovate their home served the Burton’s well. It was a smart renovation because the team was able to collaborate during the design process and not after plans were already drawn, which resulted in less changes and re-design time in the end. The team was also able to save the homeowners money by utilizing existing fixtures when available. Renovations are intrusive and homeowners need to do their homework and choose their team members wisely. Reach out to friends and family who have gone through similar projects and be your own advocate to ensure that the transition goes smoothly.

Muy bean: Dee Gilroy’s soup is hearty, good for the heart

What could be better than a hearty, healthy soup, fresh bread, a little wine and dinner with the family on the deck?

Not much, according to Dee Gilroy, the subject of this month’s Cornelius Cooks.

The UNC-Charlotte Spanish profes-

sor, husband Dave Gilroy and their four girls are an active bunch, but eating well is a family passion. “I get passionate about food and causes,” says Dee, whose real name is Diane. Her mother is famed muralist Diane Voyentzie, whose work is part of the New York

City art scene.

Dee, who supports Purple Heart Homes with a passion, paints life in broad strokes. Treating injured veterans is “absolutely” the right thing to do. Fighting toll lanes on I-77 is another passion: “We will fight until the end.” Indeed, she’s on the board of the Widen I-77 anti-toll group. “I love to read and travel, but more than anything I’m an activist,” she says.

The Amherst grad has two master’s degrees and worked in international business before going on the faculty at UNCC almost eight years ago. She’s traveled to 32 different countries, but raising a family in Cornelius and entertaining at home are special joys.

She likes to serve a good Spanish wine from the Rioja region, or a Mal-

bec with her five-bean soup. The fun thing about the soup is that it’s ripe for creative interpretations. Try different types of lentils, more Parmesan cheese, more kale, less kale, etc. “Be creative,” Dee says.

How did you come up with the recipe? “I just made it up myself.”

What do you like about it? “It’s a full meal, it’s great for weight loss. It’s packed with protein and fiber.”

When do you like to ser ve it:?

“Year-round; lunch or dinner.”

How do you like to entertain? “On the patio, very casual.”

How long to does it take to make?

“Let the beans soak for a couple of hours or overnight. Simmer in a large pot for at least 90 minutes.”

Five Bean Barley Soup 'This is a soup for creative cooks. If you are extremely methodical and need exact amounts of everything, this is not the soup for you. Let your Bohemian, artistic friends make it!

Makes enough soup to feed an army! You can cook it at the beginning of the week and it lasts up to a week or longer in the refrigerator.'

Ingredients • 2-32 oz carton containers of vegetable stock

• 5 or 6 cups of water

• 16 oz. package of garbanzo beans

• Salt- sprinkle high quality flavored rock salt to your taste- I buy pink Himalaya

• 3/4 cup lentils • 1 cup red lentils (Fresh Market has a nice selection of interesting lentils) • 1 cup French green lentils • 3/4 cup northern beans • 3/4 cup barley

• Kale- about a cup or to your taste

• Spices such as Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme (a certain generation will understand relation to song) • High quality grated parmesan cheese for topping (domestic shredded Parmesan from Fresh Market is delicious)

Preparation Soak all beans and barley in a large pot of water overnight or for at least 3 hours. Empty contents of both cartons of vegetable stock in very large pot such as a Le Creuset. Heat vegetable stock until it boils. In the meantime, have beans rinsed thoroughly so that you can place immediately in pot of boiling stock. Pour beans into pot. Add 4 cups of water. Let soup mixture come to boil again. Let simmer and gradually add enough water so that mixture is not too thick. This could be up to 2 cups more. Add all desired spices to taste. This is the creative part. You can really have fun with different spices. They can be either fresh or dry. Let simmer for at least an hour. When beans are soft, add several pieces of kale for the amount of soup you will serve that same day. This kale only cooks for 10 minutes. You can add more kale for each time you reheat the soup. Top with freshly grated parmesan cheese. Enjoy!

Place entire pot in refrigerator with left overs. The next day, the mixture will be extremely thick because the beans will absorb all the water. You can toss a few large spoonfuls in a bowl and microwave with enough water for your desired consistency. Also add some fresh kale and top with parmesan cheese. If you plan to serve more people. Scoop several large serving spoons into a medium sized cooking pot. Add more water to desired consistency and add salt and spices to taste. Finally, top with parmesan cheese. Enjoy!

Old Town Jazz Festival at Smithville Park

The afternoon rain cooled things off but didn’t keep anyone from enjoying a beautiful night filled with fun family events and local jazz musicians.

From Hula Hoops and balloons to cool jazz stylings and craft beer, the Old Town Jazz Festival was a big hit July 18 in Smithville Park.

Hundreds of people attended the first-ever jazz concert in the park. The Smithville Community Choir, with the indomitable 92-year-old Lula Bell Houston on vocals, was a big hit, along with Shades of Brown, the Brian Burton Trio and Exodus.

The Smithville Community Coalition hopes to make this an annual event, according to organizer Lisa MayhewJones. Proceeds will help fund the new Kiwanis splash park.

“We really need public access to the lake,” said Mayhew-Jones. “So in order for the kids to have access to water, we jumped at the idea that the splash pad would be a wonderful thing.”

Right now it’s called the Lake Norman Kiwanis Splash Park at Smithville Park, but the name will likely be shortened.

While the Town of Cornelius is initially funding the $150,000 splash pad, the Lake Norman Kiwanis Club will raise the money to pay the town back.

Construction is under way.

John Aneralla of the Lake Norman Kiwanis Club said that they have raised around $75,000 so far. The splash pad should be completed by Labor Day. The Kiwanis originally budgeted five park benches for donations of $5,000 each. “The response has been so good, we’re looking at eight,” Aneralla said.

Meanwhile, Kiwanis has more fundraisers planned: In August: Annual Golf Tournament at Cowan’s Ford Country Club Aug. 17 In September: Octoberfest at Harvey’s in Huntersville Sept. 19 For more info on the splash pad and how to donate to the project, visit www.

Aquesta plans stock repurchase Aquesta Financial Holdings has announced it will buy back up to $500,000 of Aquesta Common Shares (AQFH) on the open market. Stock in the Cornelius-based financial institution is thinly traded and trades below book value.

At the same time, Aquesta appears to be more aggressive about its plans to grow in Charlotte.

“We do not believe [our stock] has received the recognition our consistent profitability and growth would seem to warrant. As a result, our board believes it’s in the best interest of the company and shareholders to institute a stock repurchase plan,” said Aquesta CEO Jim Engel. “We believe limited repurchases will help improve the book value per share and earnings per share of remaining shareholders while also providing a boost to liquidity of shareholders who may be forced to sell due to personal reasons.”

Aquesta went public at $11 a share.

It’s most recent trade was around $8.25.

The company declared a 20 percent stock dividend two years ago, which means the basis for the original shareholders is $9.16 a share.

Aquesta recently expanded into the Charlotte market with the purchase of a CertusBank branch in SouthPark.

Engel said Aquesta will continue to expand in the Charlotte market. “Exact locations have not been determined.

Aquesta also announced strong earnings for the quarter just ended. Operating income for the second quarter was $590,000 vs. $446,000 during the same quarter last year.Total assets increased to $269.1 million at June 30, compared to $263.6 million at year-end.

Total loans increased to $184.1 million at June 30, vs. $172.2 million at the end of 2014.

“Our strong loan growth has allowed Aquesta to continue to show solid earnings growth both comparing quarter over quarter and year over year figures,” Engel said.

“This quarter represents a record for Aquesta with our best return on shareholder equity since our formation in 2006. With loan growth that dramatically outpaces peers; we believe Aquesta is really starting to hit its stride,” he said.

Business Spotlight Planet Fitness franchisee says plans to open in Cornelius are working out Entrepreneur Doug Letendre is opening his eighth Planet Fitness location in the Charlotte region in his new hometown, Cornelius. "We will shoot for opening in the fall," he says. Demolition at the old Salvation Army store— which was the old Bi-Lo store—is under way.

Build-out will be about 10 weeks, and includes all new heating and air, plumbing and electrical.

"It's a complete gut-job," the 47-year old former owner of a snow board shop in Vermont says. He bought his first Planet Fitness franchise in 2007; now he has more than 120 employees. With seven locations all around Charlotte, he particularly likes Cornelius.

"It's definitely a strong market; a lot of building going on up here. People in Cornelius kind of stay up in Cornelius," he says. Letendre recently moved to the Norman Island neighborhood near Community in Christ Lutheran Church.

Planet Fitness will occupy 25,000 square feet on West Catawba Avenue; another 15,000 square feet remains to be leased in the shopping center which once housed a Blockbuster Video location and UPS Store.

Choplin's Restaurant and Thai House are neighbors as well as Podium Multisport.

The fitness industry is in good shape: Statista says it is worth $72 billion a year.

"Fitness coming into the general area is a good thing, it gives everyone an opportunity to choose what they're looking for," Mike Coursen, manager of Podium Multisport. Podium opened in March.

John Jones, a broker with Gibson Smith Realty, said fitness operations are strong prospects when it comes to repurposing old grocery space in small shopping centers. Gibson Smith brokers the space in Bi-Lo Plaza.

Planet Fitness is one of the largest and fastest-growing franchisors and operators of fitness centers in the United States by number of members and locations.

It just broke through the 1,000 franchise mark nationwide.

The company is known for a welcoming, non-intimidating environment, which they call the Judgment Free Zone.

Aquesta reports higher second quarter Aquesta Financial Holdings today reported record operating income for the second quarter of 2015: $590,000 vs. $446,000 during the same quarter last year.

Total assets increased to $269.1 million at June 30, compared to $263.6 million at year-end. Total loans increased to $184.1 million at June 30, vs. $172.2 million at the end of 2014.

“Our strong loan growth has allowed Aquesta to continue to show solid earnings growth both comparing quarter over quarter and year over year figures,” said Jim Engel, CEO. “This quarter represents a record for Aquesta with our best return on share-

holder equity since our formation in 2006. With loan growth that dramatically outpaces peers; we believe Aquesta is really starting to hit its stride,” he said.

Aquesta recently completed the acquisition of a branch in the Southpark area of Charlotte. Engel said the branch acquisition is “just the first step” in the bank’s Charlotte growth plans.

Aquesta has a branch in Davidson, two in Cornelius, a branch in Huntersville and two branches in Mooresville.

Phone calls that p make you want to kill "Some friends and I are getting multiple calls a day over weeks from a number in Mt. Holy, Mich., saying it's the second and final call to lower interest rates on a credit card and reduce debt.

Annoying enough that after a while I waited to talk to a representative who hung up on me as soon as I said "I'd like to be removed from ..." I didn't even get to finish the sentence. So now I'm pissed and call the number back.

Bikes part of the solution "Do you know that the United States adds 1.5 million people every year? At this rate, how efficient do you think it will be for us to continue to count on the automobile to get us from Point A to Point B? In cities like Copenhagen and Amsterdam the first choice for transportation is the bicycle, second is public transportation, then walking and then the car. We need to think about Charlotte a little more like we tend to think about Minneapolis or Portland, where they are doing things to encourage less congestion on their roads by building safe bike lanes to public transportation lots or to major cities, colleges, and recreation areas. There are people out there that our city managers can meet with to discuss how to implement these things to make our city more cutting edge-and less dependent upon the car. We could put our money into a system such as this, adding bike garages and parking lots and bike 'roads' that will pay off much more than any toll road. No matter how big and fast you make a road today, we will outgrow it before we can bat an eye."

Don't block handicap p "Never fails that some golf cart owners in Crown Harbor feel the need to block the handicap ramp violating the American Disabilities Act. Buddy buddy, you need patience "In the Volume 10 Number 10 July 2015 version of Cornelius Today another individual shared their thoughts regarding the ‘No Turn on Red' This individual is not thinking clearly in any capacity. They stated that this was an easier right turn than any other intersection in town. WHAT??? The right turn off of 77 South is very dangerous as you can not see vehicles coming from the rear left area where the wall is. In the early stages of this DDI I witnessed many close calls that could have been terrible accidents because you cannot clearly see what is coming. As an insurance claims professional for 15 years, I was very happy to see the No Turn on Red signs. A few seconds/minutes of wait time is worth the safety. To the individual with the complaint: You lack good judgment, patience and common sense. Drive safe buddy and enjoy the wait!"

Stamp out poor flag etiquette "The Cornelius Post Office flag should either be raised and lowered each day, lighted if left up, BUT IT'S NOT! I'm sure we all visit the Cornelius Post Office regularly, but few may notice the flag there at night. It's left to fly, but not lighted at night, EVER! While the USPS code doesn't call for the traditional lighting of the American flag at night explicitly, it does call for the flag to raised and lowered, each day. See the following excerpt, and reference web site below. Let's get this fixed and show the proper respect for our nation's flag."

Speed limit signs needed "Who can address the lack of 35 mph speed limit signs when you turn southbound on Statesville Road from Catawba Avenue? There is only one speed limit sign when you first turn onto that road and it’s above the Watershed sign on the same pole. The watershed sign is not valuable information, but how fast I can go is. It should be reduced in height to a more visible level. There is not another sign present until you get to the 45 mph sign near the animal hospital, but on the northbound side of Statesville Road there are about four signs, so what gives? Thank you."

View from the right "To the disgruntled person who didn’t take kindly to the new ‘No Right On Red’ signs recently posted: They were needed.

There may have been times where you sat at the light after exiting southbound I-77 and experienced no oncoming traffic, but I can tell you on several occasions I almost wound up in a vehicle’s rear quarter panel as I was crossing over from the left and because they chose to go when I was already coming through the intersection. I do agree that a left turn on red makes more sense because you can see the oncoming traffic and the site line is not obstructed. I am relieved the signs were posted."

More about danger on Jetton Road

"In order for those of us who live on 100 Norman Drive to go east on Hwy. 73 (Sam Furr), we have to make a Uturn at the median in front of HarrisTeeter. The eastbound traffic on that road has increased exponentially in the past six months to the point where waiting for an opening can take five minutes or more. Believe it or not every now and then some gentle soul will slow down and blink their lights so we can proceed. God bless them! For those who speed up to close the gap, God bless you too! For those coming out of the Harris-Teeter parking lot, that is a stop sign!!"

"I commend Mayor Travis for his concern about the risk to youngsters riding bikes on the sidewalk of Jetton Road ("Jetton Road at Old Jetton has a bad left-hand punch," July Cornelius Today). Of equal concern should be the safety of those careless individuals who choose to park on Jetton Road between W. Catawba Avenue and Liverpool Parkway. This street is too narrow to safely accommodate two lanes of traffic and vehicle parking on both sides of the street. We have to assume that the office buildings along that street had to include adequate off-street parking for their tenants in order to get a building permit. It appears that most of those building tenants are too lazy to use the rear parking lot. It is alarming to watch those times when there are vehicles in both traffic lanes and some mindless driver, who has just parked along the street, opens the driver’s side door and steps out into the lane of traffic. It is a tragic accident waiting to happen! Come on Cornelius it ain’t that difficult to solve the problem. Two lanes of traffic, with parking on only one side of that narrow street. Do it now before someone gets seriously hurt!"
