SKÅNE

Find the Skåning in you! Skåne is one of Sweden’s best-loved provinces, framed by four seas, hills, cliffs, forest and plains. It’s southerly location and history have made Skåne a country within a country. Swedish. Danish. European. But most of all Scanian.

ABSOLUT Vodka® from Skåne water, and juice from Skåne apples! Locally produced organic food is served in traditional inns and gourmet restaurants around Skåne. Life quite simply tastes better in Skåne.

Good soil

Skåne’s soil and climate have also led to unprecedented growth in our nature and gardens. Small garden oases and grand castle gardens – the splendour is everywhere. The conditions for passionate golf are also unique, all the year round, on our 72 courses – a concentration only surpassed by that of Florida.

The mild climate and fertile, black soil have led to favourable growing conditions and an unparalleled abundance. Nowhere in Sweden are the conditions for first-class produce as good as those in Skåne! Asparagus and new potatoes are grown as delicacies; pasta is made from our own durum wheat, wine from local grapes,

Growing power

Close to everything Many have discovered the wonders of Skåne. This is where it’s happening! The distances to Denmark and the Continent are short. Skåne’s shopping centres are close together, and there are farm shops, well-stocked shops on lively shopping streets, and studios selling exquisite handicraft all over Skåne. The international atmosphere of the cities, led by Malmö, offers a wide range of experiences for all tastes. A warm welcome to Skåne to enjoy our special places! Some are so taken they stay permanently.

Northwestern Skåne fits an amazing amount into a small area. With 25 golf facilities and 31 courses, this part of Skåne has the world’s second highest concentration of golf courses, only Florida has more! The varied nature is perfect for experiences, discoveries and creativity, and along the coast, cultural centres and restaurants enjoy ringside seats by the water. Kullaberg, Hovs Hallar and Söderåsen National Park offer captivating drama. The varied nature is also striking on the little island of Hallands Väderö outside the picturesque Torekov and by the sung-about Backafallen on the island of Ven.

Inland, the moss-clad forests, attractive lakes and peaceful rivers are perfect for relaxation, fishing and swimming. There are also many beautiful gardens to visit. Sofiero Palace Gardens in Helsingborg are an experience at any time of the year and breathtaking when the 10,000 rhododendron bushes flower at the start of spring. The gardens of Fredriksdal and Norrviken are also famous for their beauty.

Famous nightlife in Helsingborg As soon as the sun sets, life hots up in Helsingborg. A pub or bar crawl is a good start to a fun evening. Helsingborg has hundreds of metres of bar counter – from genuine pubs to exclusive bars with cut-glass chandeliers, casino and music. a Helsingborg Helsingborg is known as the “Pearl of the Sound”! The sea air and big ferries that sail right into the heart of the city give it a special atmosphere. Above the centre of Helsingborg is one of Sweden’s finest open-air museums and an ecological garden paradise. Walk around Skåne in miniature with a unique collection of Skåne flora and native breeds. There is also a wonderful open-air theatre where Eva Rydberg gives humorous performances. In summer 2010, a new adaptation of the classic farce “Gröna Hissen” (The Green Lift) will hit the stage.

The biggest cultural centre in southern Sweden is located by the Northern Harbour in Helsingborg city. It is a meeting place for Swedish and international art, city and cultural history, concerts, theatre, young culture, events that lead to discussion and much more.

Southwestern Skåne is dominated by the region’s biggest city, Malmö, which offers a wide range of shopping, entertainment, culture and restaurants – just as a city should. Malmö also sticks its neck out with the unusual, unique and special. Several shops and restaurants have taken the organic route, and the many cultures that have gathered in the city have left exciting impressions. Malmö has a clear historic vein that pulsates in time with future visions. A recent investment was in the area of the Western harbour with exciting architecture, ecological thinking and the spectacular building Turning Torso. Only a bridge away is the neighbouring country of Denmark with the city of Copenhagen in the heart of the expansive Baltic Sea region.

City of Ideas – Lund Just north of Malmö is the cultural city of Lund with its cathedral, one of Sweden’s foremost sights. Lund also has a university and many companies that invest in research and development.

Fertile and soft This part of Skåne offers fertile plains, top-quality golf courses and Falsterbonäset in the far southwestern corner. Here you can enjoy velvet-soft sandy beaches, picturesque villages and rich birdlife: ornithologists from around the world gather here to watch the flight of migratory birds. Along the coast of the Baltic Sea, you can look for amber, and if you’d like to experience real Viking life, you can visit Fotevikens Vikingareservat in Höllviken or Trelleborgen Castle in Skåne’s southernmost town of Trelleborg.

The twin towns are located on the isthmus in southwestern Skåne. They are classic seaside resorts with 10 km of soft sandy beach and quiet inlets, family swimming and places to party. We warmly recommend a visit to Skanörs Gästgifvaregård (inn), and maybe a stop at Skanörs Fiskrökeri (fish smokehouse) in the harbour. SKANÖR FALSTERBO, www.vellinge.se

In 1947, there was an architecture competition for a new civic hall in Eslöv. Hans Asplund won with his house in late functional style, with assembly halls, an auditorium, restaurant and small museum. Hans Asplund designed all the fittings himself. In 2001, Eslöv Civic Hall was renovated, and in 2007 it was awarded third prize by the EU’s cultural heritage organisation Europa Nostra. A gem for design enthusiasts!

MEDBORGARHUSET i Eslöv, Södergatan 29, Eslöv www.medborgarhuset.com

The massive Viking fortress of Trelleborgen is a reconstruction of the 10th-century castle that was in what is now the centre of Trelleborg during the Viking Age and gave the town its name. Outside the castle is a Viking farm, a museum with a shop and a restaurant.

i Ängavallen Farm

Skåne’s biggest and one of the world’s oldest open-air museums is located in Lund. It has about 30 houses, typical of the time, with gardens and settings from the Middle Ages to the modern day. Exhibitions are held here all the year round. A visit at the exotic Botanic Garden is another must when visiting Lund.

Ängavallen is a place of sensual experiences. The kitchen of the big 17th-century Skåne farm uses 100% organic produce. The setting on its own is worth a visit. There is a picnic park, dairy, bakery, restaurant, café, herb garden and farm hotel. “Organic Restaurant of the Year 2008” in the White Guide.

k Moderna Museet Malmö Moderna Museet Malmö opened in December 2009 and is one of Europe’s leading museums for modern and contemporary art with a worldclass collection. In 2008, the City of Malmö set up a branch of Moderna Museet in Stockholm in the electricity board’s premises from 1901, one of Sweden’s most beautiful exhibition halls. Now, you can see the result: a high-quality museum where the most prominent contemporary artists and modern classics alternate with selections from Moderna Museet’s big collection from the 20th century onwards. MALMÖ – open to different views Malmö is a city of continental contrasts. Here, tradition meets trends and the whole world leaves its mark on the street scene, the range of food, fashion and culture. Take in Malmö at the restaurants, in the parks, the shopping streets and along the harbour promenades.

Great shopping

Malmö makes a big investment in children and youth

24

© Tourism in Skåne – www.skane.com

Take your time on your shopping trip in Malmö. There is a wide range of chain stores, shopping centres and shops with unusual, unique and trendy products, not least with regard to the

popular Danish brands. Ingrid af Maglehem is one of the boutiques that concentrates on ethical fashion. There are also several Fair Trade and eco-shops around Drottningtorget Square. At Davidhallstorg, a haunt for the young and trendy crowd, as is the Fersen District. There, among fellow craftsmen, vintage shops, antiquarian bookshops and galleries, Li Aronsson runs his combined textile studio and shop, selling a variety of articles.

Coffee in Malmö

Popular oases The squares Gustav Adolfs Torg, Stortorget and Möllevångstorget teem with life, shops, coffee bars and restaurants, and you can enjoy a coffee at one of the many outdoor restaurants from early spring to late autumn. Lilla Torg with its mediaeval charm is one of Malmö’s most popular meeting places. Many of the shops around the square sell handicraft and Nordic design.

Food from around the world The many restaurants and delicatessen shops in Malmö offer an exciting range. The city’s most cosmopolitan square, Möllevångstorget, bustles with life, market trade, restaurants and food from the four corners of the world. Take a culinary journey around the square and encounter new scents and tastes. Malmö is renowned for the wide availability of organic products. Restaurant Haqvin

Berger is located in a 17th-century house in the St Gertrud District. It is small, beautifully decorated and focuses on local and organic produce of high class. A stone’s throw from here in Humanitetens Hus, Café Henrietta serves organic coffee, and a world shop sells ‘fair trade’ products. More goodies can be found at the neighbouring Dolce Sicilia ice cream bar with organic and homemade delicacies.

Enjoying life Malmö has parks for activity and tranquillity. Folkets Park, the leafy park in the city centre, has outdoor restaurants, clubs and a funfair. The parks Slottsparken and Pildammsparken are of historic interest and lovely to idle away time in, and Stapelbäddsparken in the Western Harbour attracts a younger audience with Europe’s biggest outdoor skating park. and if you fancy a swim there is the Western Harbour, the centrally located Ribersborg Beach, also known as Malmö’s Copacabana, or Sibbarps Beach not far from the bridge abutment. Do as Malmö’s inhabitants: swim, BBQ and watch the sun set over the Sound Bridge!

Cool entertainment The range of entertainment and culture is citysized and varied with something to suit all tastes. Debaser, one of Sweden’s biggest clubs for pop and rock as well as KB have attracted worldclass rock and pop performers for many years. Malmö Opera puts on high-class opera and musical theatre for all ages, and Malmö Symphony Orchestra offers high-quality music. Jeriko is at the forefront of world music and jazz, and the multi-arena Malmö Arena hosts sporting, entertainment and cultural events of world class. © Tourism in Skåne – www.skane.com

There is something almost magical about Österlen in southeastern Skåne. There, the landscape undulates like waves, and a journey along the country lanes when the rape fields spread out like a sea of gold is unforgettable. Many an artist and designer has found inspiration there and works in the studios and workshops. Everywhere in this southeastern part of Skåne, the apple plantations spread out and factories make drinks from the fruit, and in September, it’s time for the annual apple market in Kivik, which boasts the world’s biggest apple picture.

Where the land meets the sea, the idyllic little fishing hamlets lie close together. Go for a stroll along the cobbled lanes and enjoy a delicious meal, maybe made with local produce from the land and sea at restaurants with a personal touch. In Simrishamn, you can walk among the pastel-coloured houses along the twisting lanes. North of the town, Stenshuvud National Park with its legendary mountain offers vertiginous viewpoints, fantastic nature and exciting ancient remains.

Ystad and film In Ystad, film production has gained a foothold and the popular films based on Henning Mankell’s stories about Inspector Wallander are shot there. Outside Ystad, and other parts of this southeastern coast, the sandy beaches stretch for miles and are great for walks all the year round.

There are dense forests, open meadows, beautiful ridges and watercourses that are great for fishing and canoe trips. The biosphere of Kristianstad Vattenrike (wetland area and eco-museum), which has attracted international attention, consists of lakes, rivers and wetlands with unique flora and fauna, eco-certified game fishing, guided safari tours with the “Nature’s Best” label and lots of opportunities for excursions with or without a guide. Eel and schnapps The area around Kristianstad is often knows as the centre of food and drink in Sweden. Enjoy meals based on tradition and new ideas. And talking about tradition: along the 40-km sandy beach on the east coast, eel feasts are held every autumn in the culture-historical eel huts. The delicacies are enjoyed with tall tales, song and festive spirit. During the summer half of the year, the beach and town of Åhus is the place for swimming, partying and a variety of events. One of the world’s most famous spirits – Absolut Vodka® – is also produced in Åhus.

Tradition and innovation in the county of food

Foto: skane.com©Gunnar Magnusson

THE SOIL IS SPROUTING Skåne makes the most of its favourable growing conditions. Most things thrive in the fertile soil and mild climate. Together with the catches from our waters along the coasts, the local produce has created a rich and varied food culture for generations. Curiosity, inventiveness, proximity to the rest of the world and meetings with other cultures, also at home, have taught us to try new things and to experiment. Our skilful producers turn apples into spicy chutney, sweet raspberries into full-bodied mulled wine, and in the potato districts of northwestern Skåne, traditional potato varieties become colourful, high-quality snacks. Take a journey through the food county of Skåne and enjoy pickled herring on black rye bread, egg cake with bacon at a traditional countryside inn and fresh hot falafel at a restaurant in the centre of Malmö.

Skåne is in the process of becoming Europe’s new wine district. Our now often long and warm autumn months have favoured Skåne’s wine-growing pioneers who are growing in number. For most, wine growing is still a hobby, but a growing number of enthusiasts have succeeded through hard work to turn their interest in wine into a growing, commercial business. Many of Skåne’s wines have already caught the interest of Swedish and foreign wine writers who have been surprised and amazed at the high quality. Many Skåne growers have joined forces to create their own Route du vin, according to the French model. Follow Skåne’s wine route for an excellent opportunity to discover much of our beautiful and varied landscape, from Idala on Söderslätt to Kullahalvöns Vingård in northwestern Skåne. Many Skåne vineyards also offer activities and courses, as well as restaurants linked to the vineyard.

NEW SHOPPING PATTERNS In Skåne, the countryside shops are close together. Growers and producers around the province have opened farm shops selling their own vegetables and berries, as well as produce and products from other farm producers in Skåne. The product development is impressive and varied. First-class raspberries from Söderslätt are made into 25 different and exciting products, the deer farmer’s game is turned into tasty sausages and pâtés, the fruit from the apple orchard becomes hot sauce or spicy jelly – but then Skåne’s culinary artists have won prizes for their food. At Mathantverks-SM 2009 (Swedish food championships), as many as ten medals went to companies in the southernmost part of Sweden. A visit to a Skåne farm shop can be an excellent opportunity to learn more about our domestic produce. Walks through apple orchards and herb gardens are arranged during much of the year. In northwestern Skåne, the new potato is celebrated every year on “Pärans Dag”. Asparagus has its own season and festival, and in the autumn, a festival is arranged in honour of the apple and there are harvest festivals around Skåne. An events calendar with many of our culinary events can be found at www.smakapaskane.se where you can also read about our skilful food producers, what is in season in Skåne and what you can make with it. Enjoy your meal!

Holiday rentals on the southern gold coast. Family-friendly holiday village with 106 fully equipped Swedish coast homes. All located in Havsbaden, Ängelholm. The 6 km shallow, sandy beach is very child friendly. By June, the water is warmer than in any other bay in Sweden. In the forest there are bike, walking and jogging trails. You can paddle slowly down Rönneå river, go out in a fishing boat early one morning, or just enjoy a quiet evening rowing right into the sunset. Go to Torekov and Halland Väderö or from Landskrona over to Ven. Clusters of small wooden houses are gathered around narrow lanes, all oriented around the village street with its venues open to the community, while cottages offers guests all the peace and privacy they might also seek. The area offers 12 golf courses within a half hour drive. And it’s not just golf, but the tennis, windsurfing, horseback riding and much more that make Klitterbyn a real vacation paradise.

In Skåne the accommodation is an experience in itself with everything from idyllic rural settings to a designer hotel with a cool city pulse. Turn a night’s sleep into something special by booking one of our fairytale castles. Personal Bed & Breakfasts are everywhere, and many have nature round the corner – just imagine waking up to birdsong and the smell of home-made bread! There are cottages, holiday villages, youth hostels and campsites for those who want peace and quiet and for those who want to fill their days with activities. Skåne also has accommodation for the ecologically aware as well as next door to relaxing spa facilities. And those who dream about that truly unique place can stay at the Viking Reserve or in a cave village, with Skåne´s biggest zoo as their nearest neighbour.

You’re never far from a good spot for walks in Skåne. A great place to start is Skåne’s Naturcentrum Fulltofta, located between Höör and Hörby, which is suitable for both young and old. You can find more suggestions for good walks and activities at www.strovomraden.se.

Region Skåne finances some twenty walking areas, which are managed by Stiftelsen Skånska Landskap.

Campsites on the sunny side Skåne provides all a camper needs. In Swedish province Skåne, you may camp next to the Skåne Zoo with majestic elks as your closest neighbours, at coastal campsites with great beaches and fun for the whole family or in the lush, calm inland. If you would rather raise your tent in the Swedish archipelago as seen on TV, this is found as well – in the north-east of Skåne! If you are in the mood for fishing, try your luck at one of the several fishing camps. Would you prefer to visit Sweden at another time of year than summer? Perfect! In this southernmost province of the country, you may indeed conveniently camp all year round. Skånecamping is an association of 30 Scanian campsites. Pay a visit to our homepage www.skanecamping.com for more information. You can order the camper’s guide to Skåne for free at www.skane.com. Very welcome to Sweden and Skåne!

Wine spectator award 2009

Duni Top Table Award 2009

Årets medvetna krog 2009

Allt Om Mat:s stora pris 2009

AT ÄNGAVALLEN, ENJOY AN EXPERIENCE FOR ALL THE FAMILY. ALL YEAR ROUND.

You won’t just find us at the heart of some beautiful countryside; we actually live in harmony with it. For more than 20 years now, we’ve been faithful to our ecological approach and everything we sell and serve is 100% eco-friendly. Most of it comes from our own land. We make dishes that are every bit as delicious as the fantastic ingredients that go into them. As a result, we’re the proud holders of the title of Eco-Restaurant of the Year for 2008 (White Guide), given us the Duni Top Table Award, earned us “Årets Medvetna Krog 2009” (most conscientious restaurant) and “Stora Matpriset” (the big food prize) from the Swedish food magazine Allt Om Mat. If you’d prefer not to eat in the restaurant, you can enjoy the picnic menu in our 19th century park – weather permitting. Or else you can buy food from our farm shop.

We also have lots of things to do for all the family. For instance, you can make cheese, bake bread or stuff sausages together. For our smaller guests, who might not always be too keen on a four-course meal, we can offer an animal safari. This is usually very highly rated by everyone. Our hotel has everything from double rooms to rooms for people of all shapes and sizes. So everyone can enjoy comfort at night as well. Take a look at our website – www.angavallen.se – to see our menus and some handy ideas on what you and the family can do when you visit, both on the farm and outside it. Welcome! The Nordström Family
