Stillwell Trucks – an industry leader It’s not often that a state Premier visits a new transport business and takes part in a commemorative event to celebrate its launch, but that’s exactly what happened when Stillwell Trucks NSW first opened its doors in August 1979. By attending the event, Premier Neville Wran was confirming what company directors already knew, that this was a business that would loom large within its industry for a long time to come.

And what a year 1979 was for the transport industry. The same year that Sydney’s most modern trucking centre opened, the world’s first legal triple configuration road train was also trialled on the Adelaide to Darwin run. And in NSW truck drivers had let their voices be heard when they blockaded major highways in protest against road taxes and cartage rates.

Eight years earlier the Adelaide-based organisation BS Stillwell Ford had begun trading.

The company operated a successful Ford heavy truck dealership in the northern Adelaide suburb of Regency Park. By the end of the 1970s the dealership was so well respected within the industry that the decision was taken to replicate the business in Sydney. The new venture, Stillwell Trucks NSW, would go on to become synonymous with quality and customer service.

Today Stillwell Trucks NSW (also known as The Truck Centre), is celebrating three decades of service to the transport industry. Now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Adtrans Group Ltd, the Sydney dealership originally commenced operations in 1979 as a Ford dealer selling the very popular Louisville line of trucks, also known as the L-Series. The Louisville line of heavy-duty Ford trucks encompassed a wide range of models serving the medium-, heavy-, and extra-heavy-duty truck ranks, and would go on to become one of the most popular series of trucks Ford ever produced.

“At the time of opening we had about 25 staff,” said Henry Eggers, CEO of Stillwell Trucks. “It was probably the most modern dealership in Sydney. We had the might of the Ford Motor Company behind us, so we were not going to fail, but still we set the standard for Sydney. A lot of franchises built later actually replicated what we’d done.

“A lot of other truck dealers fell by the wayside as we grew. I think we flourished because we operated in a smarter fashion than they did.

We introduced a night shift and we were open longer and I think we just provided better customer service – that was probably the key. Customer service always was and always will be our number one priority.”

In 1998 Daimler acquired Ford trucks and rebranded it Sterling. Being affiliated with Daimler gave Stillwell Trucks access to other brands. Stillwell Trucks was also awarded a

Open for business

Stillwell Trucks officially opened its Sydney truck dealership at 20 Ashford Avenue, Milperra, on Friday, 17th August 1979. A commemorative opening event was held, with the NSW Premier Neville Wran opening the new facilities. The dealership built on the strengths that had earned Stillwell Trucks Adelaide an Australia-wide reputation as a leading light in the transport industry.

“When we first came to Sydney there were three Ford truck dealers in town but they all disappeared as time went on,” Stillwell Trucks CEO Henry Eggers said. “In the mid ‘80s we obtained the Mitsubishi truck franchise and in those days there were three Mitsubishi truck dealers in town, but in time we ended up the only one. From the mid ‘80s to current days we’ve been the biggestselling Mitsubishi Fuso dealership in Australia and probably this has been, and still is, the largest volume dealership in Australia.”

The eighties

In the 1980s Stillwell Trucks attracted some of the country’s biggest transport customers.

In the mid 1980s Stillwell Trucks acquired the Mitsubishi dealer known as The Truck Centre. The purchased business was located in the western Sydney suburb of Auburn and the site, which it had occupied for 12 years, was sold for redevelopment and the entire business relocated to Stillwell Trucks’ Milperra dealership. Today the Mitsubishi Fuso brand is still synonymous with Stillwell Trucks, which has kept the name and branding of The Truck Centre alive since then.

“For us the ‘80s was all about establishing the business and building up a customer base,” Henry Eggers said. “It worked well for us because every decade we’ve been in business we roughly doubled in size. One memorable highlight was acquiring the Mitsubishi franchise in 1985.”

In 1982 Mitsubishi Fuso had celebrated its 50th anniversary, cementing its place as a leading manufacturer of highly durable and reliable commercial vehicle products.

Some of the country’s biggest transport customers were attracted to Stillwell Trucks during this decade, thanks to the company’s flawless reputation for high levels of customer service.

1985 – Stillwell Trucks acquired the Mitsubishi dealer known as The Truck Centre.

1979 – Stillwell Trucks NSW commenced operations as a Ford dealer.

1989 – Stillwell Trucks became the number one performer in Australia for Ford and Mitsubishi trucks.

1987 – Adtrans Group Limited was formed and listed on the ASX.

“In the late ‘80s Finemores made Ford their truck of choice and chose us as a dealer because of our good service levels and our relationship building,” Henry said. “They stayed with us until they were acquired by Toll in the late ‘90s. During that period we supplied them with around 650 trucks.”

A long-term relationship with Star Track Express also began in the 1980s and still exists today. Another contract with Tip Top was first inked in the ‘80s. Rural Fire Services also buy most of their four-wheel-drive trucks from Stillwell Trucks in a relationship that is now more than 20 years old.

“We’ve also constantly built on and updated our services and a lot of that happened in the ‘80s,” Henry said. “In the mid ‘80s, for instance, we added to the workshop. In the late ‘80s we built a body shop which even now is constantly being updated. Even though we’re one of Australia’s oldest dealerships we’ve tried to stay ahead of the curve in the modern service we offer and we’ve always kept up with the times.”

In 1987 Adtrans Group Limited was formed to acquire BS Stillwell Ford Pty Ltd and was listed as a new and used car and truck retail company on the Australian Stock Exchange. The company, of course, would count Stillwell Trucks NSW as one of its subsidiaries.

Two years later, in 1989, Stillwell Trucks became the number one performer in Australia for Ford trucks as well as being number one performer in the country for Mitsubishi trucks. 805 vehicles were sold by the company that year.

The Truck Centre in the western Sydney suburb of Lidcombe, and opened additional car dealerships.

Two years later, in 1996, the first Mercedes-Benz Actros truck was released, boasting the first intelligent-automated gearshift for trucks, and the following year the Actros was voted Truck of the Year.

In 1998 Ford trucks made the transition to the Sterling brand. The final year of the decade, 1999, was notable for two achievements.

Lindsay Fox personally test-drove Australia’s first Freightliner Argosy B-double truck from Melbourne to Oberon and Stillwell Trucks was awarded the 1999 Sterling Dealer of the Year Award.

The Sterling brand was launched in Australia in 1998.

The nineties “The ‘90s was a very buoyant period and after the ‘91 recession business was terrific for the rest of the decade. They were probably our best years,” Henry Eggers said. “We just experienced steady growth throughout the decade, it was a very strong period. In 1998 Daimler acquired Ford Trucks and we became a Daimler dealer. It was a very good time for the business.”

In 1994 Adtrans Group purchased the property from which subsidiary Stillwell Trucks operated in Sydney and the following year Adtrans Group acquired the Hyundai franchise, opened

The 2000s “Since 2000 we have taken advantage of the fact that Stillwell Trucks is a very well established, mature business,” Henry Eggers said. “The other great advantage we have is that we’re dealing with the third generation of some of our customers.”

“We’ve also had very steady staff with very little turnover. There are many people here who were with us at the start – the majority of our staff would have 15 to 20 years service with us. This means the customers can come back and talk to the same person, which is a rare thing these days.”

Prestigious awards have flowed in to Stillwell Trucks since 2000, including four times Sterling Dealer of the Year and Freightliner Dealer of the Year. In 2002 the Milperra dealership acquired Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner franchises and that same year the Mercedes-Benz Actros Mark II hit the road – the model was quickly recognised by yet another Truck of the Year award in 2003.

Two years later parent company Adtrans Group acquired the business of Whitehorse Truck Centre in Dandenong, Victoria which also sells Freightliner, Mercedes-Benz and Sterling trucks.

Mitsubishi Fuso celebrated another milestone in 2007 with the 75th anniversary of the recognised brand. And in 2009 it was MercedesBenz’ turn to celebrate with the launch of the new Actros truck. A popular model offered by Stillwell Trucks, the new Actros was honoured with the International Truck of the Year 2009 award and was also acknowledged by Guinness World Records as the world’s most fuel-efficient 40-ton truck after a test-drive in Brindisi, Italy.

The Mercedes-Benz Actros is part of a new breed of trucks sold in Australia that, since 2008, have had to meet strict new emission laws that called for a sharp reduction in harmful emissions.

Finally, in 2008 Mercedes-Benz celebrated their 50th anniversary in Australia and Stillwell Trucks took out the 2009 Freightliner Dealer of the Year Award and the overall Daimler Trucks Dealer of the Year Award. n

The end of an era marks the beginning of a new one 2009 saw the ceasing of production of iconic Sterling trucks, a brand that was introduced to Australia in 1998 and built on the heritage of the popular Ford Louisville Truck.

As the transport industry has evolved there has been a consolidation and streamlining of truck brands. Although Sterling trucks are no longer in production, Stillwell Trucks will continue to provide a selection of quality used Sterling models and support owners for all service and parts needs.

Additions to the Freightliner range will be made to address market segments previously served exclusively by Sterling. This will lead to a more focused model line-up offering an even more attractive program of innovation in safety and user productivity.

Even as we say goodbye to an old friend, the future looks bright. n

CANTER. THE NOT SO SQUEEZY ONE. In the early 1980s Fuso launched the very first widecab light truck, supported by one of the transport industry’s most recognised advertising campaigns.

The advertisements featured Japanese Sumo wrestlers and the slogan ’Not so squeezy’, which cemented in the minds of consumers the unique cab space benefits of the vehicle.

Fuso’s advertising campaign was so successful that the image of the Japanese Sumo wrestler is still closely linked to the Fuso brand. Vehicle preparation centre Stillwell Trucks has a large vehicle preparation centre which fully customises every truck to ensure it fits the specific and unique needs of the client’s business. The centre has a full range of truck accessories available and handles everything from bull bar fitting to wheelbase modifications, air-conditioning and sleeper box fitting, turntables, additional axles and just about anything else a client requires. It also has full paint shop facilities.

“The trucks we sell are not produced in Australia, so often to meet the customer’s expectations we have to modify the truck they have ordered. We have to customise it ourselves. That’s why it’s so vital for us to understand their business before we work out exactly what they need.” Stillwell Trucks service manager Andy O’Keeffe said.

“We’ll often get a truck from a manufacturer that is 75 per cent of what the customer wants. We then bring that up to 100 per cent, whether it means changing the wheels or adding a sleeper cab. It must be tailored to exactly match the client’s usage pattern.

We’ll basically ensure the vehicle is a perfect match for the client.”

Cope Sensitive Freight “Why do we keep coming back to Stillwell Trucks? Well to tell the truth, we never left them,” said Dennis Morris, national manager of operations for Cope Sensitive Freight.

“I just think they’re a very professional organisation and they’re very close to their clients.”

COPE Sensitive Freight was founded in April 1989 with the sole purpose of providing a much needed specialised service to a select client who needed expert handling of their sensitive equipment. It began in the homes of the company’s managers who contacted businesses they felt had need for such a service and asked them what exactly they needed in a sensitive freight carrier.

Armed with this information COPE went about purchasing purpose-built vehicles as well as specific handling equipment. At this time the company also recruited operational personnel who’d been involved in the handling of sensitive freight for a number of years. Most importantly these people were conversant with what the customer needed and were very mindful of this in the handling of equipment.

Since then COPE has established depots in all capital cities around Australia. Depots are also located in major regional areas including Albury, Launceston and Newcastle. The company also established a regular national linehaul network meaning all freight travels with similar sensitive consignments and not with incompatible freight, which would invariably make sensitive equipment prone to damage.

COPE is now Australia’s largest independent specialist sensitive freight carrier. “We’re very selective of the vehicles we retail,” Stillwell Trucks used truck sales manager Kevin Dale said. “Customers can want to trade vehicles that are sometimes not the ideal vehicle for us to re-sell. So we hand-pick the ones that we want to retail and that we can stand behind and often sell with a warranty. We need to be sure that our customer will be able to get their job done with the equipment we sell them.”

Stillwell Trucks experienced sales staff offer an accurate valuation for the trade-in of current vehicles. A full range of used trucks are on constant display, including everything from a two-tonne light truck to Road Train spec.

Stillwell Trucks carefully selects the vehicles it retails and ensures they’re prepared to a high standard. The company offers warranties on selected units. All used vehicles undergo an extensive full vehicle history check and pre-sale inspection and reconditioning if required.

Service “Products come and go but people are what really make this business what it is, and nowhere is that more true than in our service division,” Stillwell Trucks service manager Andy O’Keeffe said. “Of course products are important but relationships are the most important. I believe if you do the right thing by a customer they’ll tell five people, but if you do the wrong thing they’ll tell 100 people.”

The Stillwell Trucks’ workshop can handle anything from basic servicing, windscreen replacements and air-conditioning installation to major component overhauls and RTA inspections.

The workshop itself can easily accommodate B-double trucks and is staffed by factory-trained mechanics and technicians. It spans 29 bays as well as a full drive-over pit and a set of four mobile hoists. Staff are trained on a regular basis by such organisations as Mercedes-Benz, Fuso, Detroit, Cummins, Eaton, ArvinMeritor, Caterpillar, Timken, TAFE, IAME and Donaldson. Staff also attend various product specific inhouse courses.

The company’s apprentices go through Automotive Group Training and besides on-the-job and TAFE training they attend the Mercedes-Benz instruction centre in Melbourne twice a year.

The industry-leading Stillwell Trucks apprentice program is a major part of the company’s commitment to the future of the industry, ensuring the brightest talent is trained to the highest standard and paid accordingly.

Repairs and maintenance are carried out on all makes and models of trucks, buses and trailers and the workshop offers sameday or next-day booking. The workshop has the full complement of Mercedes-Benz, Freightliner, Sterling, Eaton Autoshift and Fuso diagnostic programs with specialty tools required for repairs.

Stillwell Trucks operates two shifts until midnight, allowing customers to have their vehicles attended to late in the day and pick up their vehicle late in the night ready for the next working day.

The workshop boasts a RTA-accredited unrestricted inspection station with a RTA approved VIS shaker and brake roller tester. Advanced vehicle inspection and diagnostic systems assist with technical evaluations and pre-RTA inspection checks.

Stillwell Trucks has specialised in heavy vehicle repairs, servicing and fleet maintenance since 1979 so has the expertise to service and repair all brands of trucks, buses and trailers. n Stillwell Trucks service department is open Monday to Friday, from 8am to midnight and Saturday from 8am to 4.15pm. “There’s no point having skilled technicians on hand to fix the vehicles if you haven’t got the parts they need,” John Farrell said. “In many ways running a parts department effectively is about knowing your business, knowing your customers and knowing your market in order to know what parts to put on the shelf. The vehicles are constantly changing so we’re constantly looking at our stock levels and thinking about what else we have to stock.”

Tomorrow – the next 30 years There are plenty of challenges ahead in the trucking industry, including new emissions guidelines, but an environment of change is nothing unusual for Stillwell Trucks. “We have managed major changes for the last 30 years and we will continue to do so. And with challenges come opportunities,” Stillwell Trucks general manager Chris Devereux said.

One great opportunity will be presented by the fact that government and industry forecasts say the amount of freight moved by road is likely to double between 2000 and 2020, just as it did between 1980 and 2000.

“We have heard that prediction many times and hopefully that will be good for our business as it’ll mean more trucks,” Chris Devereux said.

“But government and industry are looking for more efficiency as well, and we will have to handle the continual push towards more environmentallyfriendly vehicles and the introduction of hybrid and gas-powered vehicles, such as Fuso’s Canter Eco Hybrid truck. Engines are going to become like a filter where the air going in is dirtier than the air coming out the exhaust.”

“That will put a lot of challenges on how we run our business, but that also makes it fun and interesting as the business keeps changing. At the same time, despite constant change this has

remained a good, old-fashioned type of customerserviced based business that provides value-formoney products to the customers. That is what we have to maintain going forward.”

The manufacturers Stillwell Trucks represents are also continuing to invest heavily in technology. For instance, Mercedes-Benz trucks are equipped with state-of-the-art BlueTec® SCR (selective catalytic reduction) diesel technology. This has resulted in substantial cuts in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. And in 2008 Mitsubishi Fuso launched the biggest fleet test of hybrid trucks in Europe as part of the ‘Shaping Future Transportation’ initiative. The test was conducted in London and involved 10 Canter Eco Hybrid trucks.

Fuso’s vision is for more environmentally-friendly trucks and buses that enhance safety and provide maximum driver and customer benefits.

While concentrating heavily on customer service, growth is a constant factor of the Stilwell Trucks business as it has been for three decades.

On top of that, parent company Adtrans Group will constantly seek growth through acquisition and improved performance and efficiencies.

Staff will remain a key focus as development and training keeps them at their current industryleading levels of knowledge and ability. The future of the industry will also be bolstered through

training of apprentices, something Stillwell Trucks has always taken very seriously.

“We look at our apprentices in a different way to most other companies,” Chris said. “We pay our first-year apprentices second-year money because we recognise that they do a hard job and we want them to stay in the industry.”

A can-do approach developed during decades of experience, change and learning about client businesses means Stillwell Trucks staff will always find solutions that fit. It also means the business will find ways to work smarter and will invest in new technologies to reduce costs to operators whilst lowering the vehicles’ environmental impact.

Despite all of the challenges on the horizon, some things will never change. “Our business is a simple one,” Chris said. “Customers buy our products to move goods from A to B. The vehicles and their technology will change. How we service and maintain those vehicles will change.

The environmental guidelines will change. But our customers’ expectations will stay the same. They want to buy the vehicles to do the same job that they have been doing for the last 30 years from a reliable business partner who understands their needs. That will never change.” n
