PRESTIGE TRUCK BODIES Leading the way in truck body building The demand for Prestige truck bodies grew as word soon got around about the new manufacturer delivering a superior product.

“We were in a small factory and needed to expand so we rented the building next door which doubled our manufacturing space,” Paul said.

“Within the year we were again looking for more space and moved to a 10,000 sq ft factory in Carrum Downs.”

Demand for Prestige truck bodies meant the company was quickly on the move, this time renting a 25,000 sq ft factory, again in Carrum Downs.

“We bought the vacant block next door to this factory but realised in 2005 this was not going to be big enough for our expansion plans,” Paul said.

“We decided to buy a bigger site and build a new manufacturing plant with everything under one roof.

To coincide with Prestige Truck Bodies’ 10th anniversary, the company has moved into a state-of-theart manufacturing facility at Carrum Downs in Melbourne’s south-east suburbs.

Built on a 1.6 hectare secure site, the new building includes streamlined manufacturing lines for building truck bodies, a spare parts warehouse and ample storage of finished vehicles on-site, including a 0.4 hectare of undercover parking.

Carrum Downs has been the home to Prestige Truck Bodies throughout its 10 years of existence. Located on the busy industrial area of Carrum Downs, just off the Peninsula Freeway, the site gives easy access to all areas of Melbourne.

Prestige Truck Bodies was founded by Paul Williams who spent 14 years in the industry before deciding to branch out with his own business.

“I started in the industry as an apprentice to a truck body builder in June 1982,” he said.

“The large site has also meant there is room to store vehicles waiting for bodies and finished trucks awaiting collection.

“There is also room for further expansion.”

“This gave me the experience and knowledge to build all types of vehicle bodies and after my apprenticeship, I spent four years building buses and specialist four-wheel drive coaches.”

The desire to produce a better product led Paul to start Prestige in 1996.

“I didn’t feel my competitors were building the best bodies to suit what companies wanted and that led me to build a few truck bodies,” he said.

“I started building bodies for onetonne vehicles as well as some van bodies.”

PRESTIGE TRUCK BODIES Truck body manufacturing The new Prestige Truck Bodies manufacturing facility at Carrum Downs has been built to achieve maximum efficiency while delivering top-quality bodies.

Production of a truck body starts at one end of the factory as a flat sheet of metal and progresses through the building, finally being mated to the customer’s truck.

Initially sheets of metal are cut and folded to the customer’s requirement in the initial production area.

These cut sheets are loaded on to trolleys to be pushed to the fabrication area.

Here the components are welded together with one of the 25 MIG welders to create the basic structure.

One innovative feature of this area is

service gantries that are positioned around the body to enable Prestige workers to access the top of the bodies safely.

Prestige is building rigid truck bodies from one tonne to 14-pallet rigid bodies and all these sizes can be handled in the new spray booth.

“It enables the workers to fit the capping to the bodies while they are upright which is more efficient,” Prestige Truck Bodies managing director Paul Williams said.

Finally, the finished body is matched to the customer’s vehicle before being driven to the quality control inspection area which is under cover on the site.

“The body can then be moved to the next stage by one of the four overhead five-tonne cranes.

“The factory is designed to keep the bodies moving down the production line which means we can build more bodies at the end of the day.”

The final inspection includes checking that all of the customer’s specifications have been met and also that the body has been manufactured to Prestige’s high internal standards.

“If there is something we have missed or is not quite right, we will correct it at this stage before driving the vehicle to the delivery area,” Paul said.

The bodies are then fitted with accessory items such as steps, tail-lifts and door fittings before being painted.

The state-of-the-art manufacturing facility at Carrum Downs means Prestige builds a body every two hours.

Prestige has installed a state-of-theart spray booth that handles the finished body.

After completion, the finished trucks are stored securely on-site awaiting delivery.

The manufacturing facility has been built to achieve maximum efficiency while delivering top-quality bodies.

PRESTIGE TRUCK BODIES Custom creations Prestige Truck Bodies builds custom-designed bodies to meet client’s particular needs as sometimes a standard truck body is not always the best solution.

“The client comes in with a wishlist of what they want the truck body to do and we turn that into reality,” Prestige managing director Paul Williams said.

“We also have to make sure what is wanted will meet with all the road safety standards around Australia.”

A custom-built body passes through the extensive manufacturing facility the same as a standard body.

The same high standards of construction and finishing are applied to the body and a final quality inspection ensures the finished product exactly meets the client’s specified requirements.

Advantage options When Prestige Truck Bodies builds a rigid body for a client there is a wide range of extras that can be fitted during manufacturing.

Many of the extras are designed to speed operations to deliver greater efficiencies and cost savings from the operator’s logistics’ fleet.

PRESTIGE TRUCK BODIES Service and repairs Prestige Truck Bodies undertakes repairs and refurbishment of truck bodies at its Carrum Downs facility.

“We handle all repairs and refurbishment on-site in Victoria and use service agents in other states,” Prestige Truck Bodies managing director Paul Williams said.

“All work is undertaken to our specifications and inspected at the end of the job to ensure the work is to the highest standards.”

Some refurbishment work is undertaken on truck bodies that have been traded in against a new unit.

Paul said sometimes an operator found that a truck body was no longer suitable for a particular contract, but they did not want to sell the truck.

“So they will have a new body fitted that meets their operational requirements and we then sell the old refurbished body to another operator.”

PRESTIGE TRUCK BODIES Parts Prestige Truck Bodies has an extensive spare parts warehouse at its new Carrum Downs facility.

On average the warehouse holds about $50,000 worth of spare parts at any one time.

“The warehouse operates 24-hoursa-day, seven-days-a-week,” Prestige managing director Paul Williams said.

“We hold all the usual selection of parts an operator may want urgently such as door locks, handles as well as brackets and nuts and bolts.”

The company will deliver spare parts to anywhere in Australia, normally within the working day, depending on where the customer is based.

The warehouse operates 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week.
