SPRING 2024

MY REDBIRD STORY

Andrew LaFrence | ’84

On September 14, 2023, Drs. Jomo Sankara and Maddy Trimble went to Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) with nine students. The students met with several ADM professionals for job shadowing opportunities and participated in a meeting with ADM executives for detailed information about the different ADM business units. Students attending stated that they really enjoyed meeting with the ADM executives and the job shadowing experiences.

STUDENTS JOB SHADOW AT ADM CAREER FAIR PREPARATION

On September 8, 2023, the department hosted an Accounting Career Fair Prep Day. Students were introduced to faculty, Registered Student Organization presidents, and Early Program Achievers, as well as given a brief overview of the profession. Then, students attended three breakout sessions of their choice from the following topics: career fair prep, graduate programs, internships, CMA/private careers, audit, tax, and Business Information Systems/technology. The panelists consisted of faculty and professionals. The event helped the approximately 50 students in attendance be better prepared for the Accounting Career Fair, which took place a week later.

Andrew LaFrence ’84, came to Illinois State University in 1981. He started at Peat, Marwick and Mitchell (now known as KPMG) in Peoria. Andy transferred to the KPMG office in Minneapolis in 1986 and became a partner in 1996. Since retiring from KPMG in 2010, he has served as a Chief Financial Officer of several Life Sciences companies, including three public companies. Andy currently serves as Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President of Nortech Systems (NASDAQ:NSTS). He also serves on the Board of Directors and Audit Committee Chair of both American National Bank (Omaha NE) and Insitu Biologics, a drug delivery start-up, as well as Board Chair of the University Enterprise Lab, a Life Science Incubator with roots at the University of Minnesota.

Andy loved his experience at Illinois State. In addition to the academics, he enjoyed the full college experience, which developed his critical thinking. When he was an auditor, this led to asking not just what, but also why. Outside of the accounting classes, he enjoyed his Speech, Asian Studies, and Political Science classes.

While a student, Andy spent time as a graduate assistant. Occasionally, he had to teach the class. Andy says that helped overcome his fear of public speaking. One of the other surprises he experienced when he graduated was the amount of reading and writing he had to do, skills that were enhanced during his time at Illinois State.

In 2014, Andy and his wife Kim Chapman LaFrence started the LaFrence Family Scholarship in Honor of Andy’s father Bert LaFrence ’76, his mother Ann LaFrence ’78 (medical records administration), and his wife Kim. Kim was a flight attendant, and just before 9/11, decided to change careers and went back to school to get a Juris Doctor and become a lawyer. Bert also paused his career to earn an accounting degree from Illinois State University, graduating in 1976. The scholarship was created to provide financial support for students who are willing to take a risk later in life to earn their accounting degrees at Illinois State. Last year, two students received scholarships. Andy encourages the scholarship winners to maintain contact in a mentor relationship after they graduate.

In 2024 Andy was inducted into the College of Business Hall of Fame.

Giving Back to the Community

ISU’s Accounting Honorary Society, Beta Alpha Psi (BAP), partnered with The Pack Shack and 9/11 Day to educate the public about and raise funds to fight food insecurity in the BloNo community. Did you know 40% of students are food insecure (the condition of not having access to sufficient food, or food of an adequate quality, to meet one’s basic needs)? BAP and partners raised $20,430 for the cause, that was then used to purchase food and supplies.

On September 30, 2023, 134 volunteers of students, staff, and faculty came together for an intense 2-hour Feed the Funnel (FtF) party. Volunteers packed 50,714 delicious, healthy meals with the purchased supplies. The meals were delivered to local nonprofits, including School Street Food Pantry, Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Tinervin Family Foundation, and Home Sweet Home Ministries.

A big THANK YOU to the BAP students and faculty advisors for making a difference in the community! BAP is a small and driven group of accounting students that is continually looking for partners that allow them to take on these challenging projects. If you or your company are interested in partnering with BAP in the future, please reach out to Liesel Mitchell (lmitch2@ilstu.edu).

BRINGING HOME THE HARDWARE STUDENT AWARDS

Congratulations to Lacey Bordewick for winning two major awards this year! She is a recipient of The Pantagraph’s 20 Under 40 Awards, which recognize young professionals in Central Illinois for making a difference in the community through leadership, services, and career excellence. More than 250 people attended the ceremony, hosted by the McClean County Chamber of Commerce, to celebrate the event. Among many roles, Lacey is actively engaged in the community as a member of the St. Mary’s Bloomington Finance Council. She serves as the Live Your Dream Award chairperson for Soroptimist International – an organization helping women achieve financial independence. She also volunteered at and spoke to the parents of ambassadors at the Illinois CentralSouth Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership seminar.

Lacey received her Bachelor’s degree in 2006 and Master’s in 2008, both from Illinois State University. In 2013, she returned to our accounting department to teach various accounting courses, such as the Introduction to Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Cost Accounting, Business 100, and the Honors Mindset Seminar. Through her dedication to student education and support, she was voted by our students as the winner of the 2023 RSM Faculty of the Year Award!

In her free time, Lacey enjoys reading and traveling with her family. Her goal is to visit all 50 states by the time she is 50, and she only has five left!

Brandi Tate was selected as a recipient for the 2022-2023 Jimmie Smith Student Leadership Experience, given by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA).

As a winner, she was able to take part in three activities: participating in the IMA Committee on Ethics meeting, attending Volunteer Leadership Committee monthly meetings, and attending the 2023 IMA Annual Conference.

Brandi shared her reactions to each of the activities. “We could vote on the winner for the ethics case competition and discuss our opinions that led to our vote with the ethics board! It was truly like we were a member of the board. The monthly VLC meetings were a great opportunity to experience the planning and collaboration in the ‘background’ of an organization like IMA. The IMA conference was a fabulous opportunity to network, connect, and learn about various companies collaborating with IMA.”

Brandi offered further insight into her experience as an award winner. “Through this experience, I made connections with professionals I can still talk to and learn from! To mention a couple, I still connect with Dan Butcher, the editor of Strategic Finance and a member of the Ethics Committee, and I also still connect with Dalton Lewis, who I met at the IMA conference - he will be coming to campus to speak with the RSO I am a part of - Beta Alpha Psi. Being a recipient and involved in these experiences was truly an honor.” She also built lasting friendships with the other award winners, Keith Lim Eng Kian (Singapore Management University) and Charles Csaszar (University of Scranton). Congratulations, Brandi!

OPPORTUNITIES FOR GIVING

Alumni support of Illinois State University is tremendously important for many reasons. Gifts received from alumni provide the “margin of excellence” in our programs. Additionally, outside organizations view alumni giving as a measure of “customer satisfaction.” For example, the percentage of alumni who give to Illinois State University factors into the US News and World Report’s “Best Colleges” rankings. While the number is only a small factor in the overall ranking, Illinois State University stands well behind the institutions we strive to emulate. For these reasons, your annual gift is extremely important. Your gift, no matter the size, can make a real difference to Illinois State University students.

The students, faculty, and staff of the Department of Accounting thank all those who have supported the department and the university. This significant support is testimony to the enhanced sense of mutual responsibility to ensure quality education in accounting and business information systems. Last year, the Department of Accounting had 238 individual donors and 35 corporate donors totaling $535,019 Many of the recent donations have been to create endowments for scholarships.

Thank you to all of you for your support.

YOU CAN HELP THE DEPARTMENT REACH ITS GOAL ONE OF TWO WAYS.

One way is to make the donation online using this QR code to right and checking the “Department of Accounting” box at the link.

The other way to donate is to mail a check payable to:

Illinois State University Foundation Office Campus Box 8000 • 1101 N. Main Street Normal, Illinois 61761
