C

ommunity Standards branch staff at the City of Edmonton are working collaboratively on a project to help educate city residents as to why they need to keep their properties clean. This spring, Edmonton City Council approved funding for the addition of five new Municipal Enforcement Officers with the goal of enhancing property standards enforcement effectiveness. This enforcement addition is a critical component of our new Nuisance Abatement initiative, whereby peace officers will be raising awareness with property owners on their responsibilities in dealing with issues such as messy properties, deteriorat-

ing structures and run-down fences. The goal of the initiative is to build and foster relationships among residents and municipal enforcement officers. As part of the Nuisance Abatement initiative, these officers will lend their support to the ‘Big Bin’ events this season by proactively inspecting surrounding residential neighbourhoods, educating citizens and informing the public of upcoming ‘Big Bin’ events. Work is currently underway to develop tailored strategies geared towards assisting aging communities in need, and to increase proactive nuisance property enforcement levels city-wide.
