A recognition of Calgary’s finest business leaders BY MELANIE DARBYSHIRE

T

o be a business leader is no small task. The responsibility, dedication and vision demanded by the job is something few people can bear. To be an exceptional business leader – one that can steer a business and its people through both the good and bad times and still emerge a success – is an achievement worthy of praise. In its 10th year, the Leaders Awards are a celebration and recognition of Calgary’s great business leaders. And many great leaders there are. As in past years, the nominations for this year’s awards included an impressive number of individuals from a variety of sectors including media and entertainment, real estate, health care, consumer products, pharmaceutical and insurance. The task of sorting through the nominees and determining the 20 award recipients fell this year to Trevor Winkler, regional managing partner at MNP LLP; David Allwright, dean of the Chiu School of Business at Bow Valley College; and Myron Feser, vice president, sales, at ATB Business & Agriculture. “Despite the current economic times, we still need to take time to acknowledge and recognize people and businesses in our community that are doing great things,” says Winkler. “These awards are a prime example of doing so – there are still a lot of great things happening in this city.” Indeed Calgary’s economic climate has been a challenge for all of the recipients, many of whom are seasoned survivors of down cycles. “It’s important that business leaders in Calgary get the recognition that they deserve, particularly the ones that are able to weather the current economic conditions,” says Allwright.

The Judges

“A lot of these people have been through this before – they’re examples of how you survive the boom-and-bust economy.” Regardless of which industry they’re in, each of the recipients displayed one thing in common: “What truly stood out was each leader’s unwavering resilience in the face of challenging times,” says Feser. “Each of their stories was inspiring and it showed just how important strong leadership is to make it through a variety of trying situations.”

TREVOR WINKLER

DAVID ALLWRIGHT

Another standout quality: what the recipients do for their community. “I was really impressed with the commitment that each nominee has made to make Calgary an even better place, through community involvement and philanthropic activities,” says Feser. “It’s evident that these leaders aren’t just passionate about their business, they’re passionate about Calgary and all of its diverse communities.” Winkler also highlights the impact the recipients have on their own business teams, particularly future leaders. “Their mentorship and leadership will no doubt lead to more and more successful leaders for generations to come.” In his fourth year as a judge, Allwright continues to be impressed by all the nominees. “Every year the judging gets tougher because the range of applicants gets better. It’s a very rewarding experience to be able to do something like this – because you do hear a lot of doom and gloom. It’s nice to learn about businesses that are not only doing well but are thriving and have been through this more than once.”

I had a new home to pay for and a wife I needed to support and I knew at that moment I was on my own to make my success a reality. Ayn Rand and her book Atlas Shrugged has been my greatest inspiration and her teachings helped structure the personal and financial success I have today. I know that if I give people good value, they will come back again. ~ Wayne Henuset, Owner

Lynn Donaldson - LD& A | 2016 Leaders Alumni

MOVING FORWARD AS LEADERS IN CALGARY’S DESIGN-BUILD INDUSTRY In 2016, Lynn Donaldson & Associates was pleased to be a Leaders Award winner. Since then, the family-owned design firm has rebranded, has a new logo, and new leadership. The company is now known as LD&A.

Lynn has plenty to be proud of as she plans to scale back on her time as the face of the company. LD&A has won numerous awards and Lynn herself has been recognized twice as a leading female entrepreneur, in addition to being a 2016 Leader.

“Lynn Donaldson & Associates is just too long,” founder Lynn Donaldson smiles as she explains about the new LD&A branding. “Also, while I am still around, the company has progressed beyond me. My son, Neil Bailey, is actively managing the company. Our senior designer, Amy Adams, has returned from maternity leave. Despite a slow start to the year, we have several projects on the go.”

“I was very honoured and proud to be part of such a prestigious group,” she says of her Leaders award. “These awards give credibility to everyone.”

Lynn launched the company in 1988 from her basement, but it didn’t take long for the custom design-build firm to become a huge success. Now, a full team of interior designers, carpenters, custom cabinetmakers, and project managers design, build, and renovate, bringing clients’ visions to life. Neil Bailey started at LD&A by assembling and staffing a fabrication shop, building on his years of experience as a certified carpenter. He’s excited about furthering the mission, values and reputation of LD&A, and enjoys working on unique building projects that combine technology, science, innovation and creativity.

As the founder reflects on her career, from working out of a basement office, moving to a commercial location, becoming recognized as a premier design-build firm in Calgary, and watching with pride as her son takes over the reins, she cites “Creating an environment specifically for each client and watching their delight at the results… we are great problem solvers!” as what she loves the most about her professional journey. “Have the courage to get out front and lead!” Lynn says to other entrepreneurs and would-be Leaders. “Plan and forecast. Know when to step back.” It’s great advice from a businesswoman who has demonstrated what it takes to be a true Leader every day. Plenty has changed in a year, but as the team at LD&A point out, they are the “same remarkable team, same outstanding services, just easier to say.”

Frank Lonardelli - Arlington Street Investments | 2016 Leaders Alumni

Frank Lonardelli ARLINGTON STREET INVESTMENTS While it seems to some that Arlington Street Investments (ASI) came out of nowhere to become a leading real estate owner and developer in the city, president and CEO Frank Lonardelli has certainly paid his dues and studied his craft. He has been in the real estate development and investment business for the past two decades. He built three companies from the ground up and spent a great deal of time over the past 10 years sitting on boards and restructuring real estate assets.

It will have an 8,000-square-foot retail presence on the main floor featuring unique retailers that will significantly service the trade area. The vertical structure will be home to 34 unique, high-end residential units, making it the perfect retail/residential mixed-use development in this high-profile intersection. ASI has focused on this highly-trafficked pedestrian-friendly corridor with the intention of increasing an amenity-rich environment for Calgarians who live, work and play there. “Now that we have secured the right locations we have a responsibility to develop unique projects. In doing so, these developments will create an ecosystem which will attract more people to the area and significantly increase our brand presence,” he says.

“I guess we’ve been an overnight success that has been 20 years in the making,” Lonardelli says. This innovative entrepreneur is showing why he won a Leaders Award in 2016 with the creation of his latest real estate portfolio on the 17th Avenue corridor. The ASI team has taken a focused approach to this area, defining seven potential development sites five years ago. But to make it happen ASI had to acquire approximately 40 buildings. To most people, especially in the development community, that would be an impossible undertaking, but Lonardelli was up for the challenge. “That portfolio took three years to put together, 24-7. That three-year time frame actually equates to investing 15 years’ worth of energy to accomplish the results we’ve been able to achieve,” he says.

“I guess we’ve been an overnight success that has been 20 years in the making,”

And now the fruits of that hard work are about to ripen. ASI is breaking ground this - Frank lonardelli fall on the first of seven high-profile developments that will assist in defining Calgary’s 17th Avenue corridor much in the same way Robson Street is to Vancouver and Bloor Street is to Toronto. The first project is called The Fifth, aptly named given its location on the northwest corner of 17th Avenue and 5th Street SW.

And that is what Lonardelli is doing. With the support of incredible strategic partners and the nine employees at ASI, he is turning his vision into reality. And that vision is what makes Lonardelli stand out in the crowd. He approaches every project as an entrepreneur – he manoeuvres the company through the short-term threats but operates according to long-term, quantifiable trends. Lonardelli surrounds himself with a highly-ambitious, intelligent and agile team that has the confidence to pursue innovative and challenging projects while maintaining an openness to new ideas. This mode of operation allows ASI to quickly pivot when plans need to change. That adaptability, competence and drive by Lonardelli and his team has helped ASI prosper in a downturn and become a benchmark in the industry.

Frank Lonardelli is a proud entrepreneur, a proud Canadian and a proud Calgarian dedicated to making his city a vibrant, exciting one. With the 17th Avenue corridor portfolio and two new geographic areas targeted for growth, Lonardelli and Arlington Street Investments are well on their way to doing just that.

Summit Kids Changes the Face of Childcare By Rennay Craats

ancy E. Klensch decided that just OK childcare wasn’t OK at all. She felt strongly that her son – and every other child – deserved to be engaged, captivated and involved in his community, but she couldn’t find a suitable program. Klensch was so disappointed by the lack of quality childcare programming that she changed her life completely to make it better. “I quit my corporate job and opened Summit Kids in 2009. The driving force behind what we do comes from my son, and the compass I use is ‘would I want this for my own child?’” says Klensch, founder of Summit Kids. The result is a revolutionary childcare experience for children from 12 months to kindergarten-aged, as well as after-school and spring break and summer programs for elementary students. Summit Kids offers a holistic, child-centric approach to childcare and education-enhancement programs that are delivered by a highly-qualified, inspired staff.

Nancy E. Klensch, founder of Summit Kids.

Summit Kids delivers incredible specialized programs including performing arts, cooking, textiles, computer science, robotics and photography while at the same time incorporates community initiatives like being the Calgary Stampeders Kids Club sponsor that allow Klensch to give back and the children to be involved in the community around them. Summit Kids exposes children to a wide range of activities that reach far beyond the scope of the average childcare centre, and this gives Summit kids an opportunity to tap into their interests and skills at an early age. “We’ve been successful at moving away from traditional arts and recreation and taking it one step further,” she says. “Summit Kids lives at the intersection of school and home, and we take pride in being able to give children experiences that they can’t get from school or home.”

“That will provide the opportunity for multigenerational programming, and bringing those populations together has such a great synergy,” Klensch says. This unique relationship will be fantastic for young and mature participants alike, and Klensch is excited to bring this innovative idea to Calgary. The bright businesswoman is clearly the right person for the job. Klensch recently received the Alberta Women Entrepreneurs Upsurge Award and is a nominee for the EY Entrepreneurial Winning Women Program. She is elevating the profile of childcare businesses while being recognized for the hard work and success of Summit Kids. And she knows the best is yet to come. “Keep your eyes open and watch for us because we’re just getting started,” Nancy Klensch says.

For the past eight years, Summit Kids has grown to serve more than 700 children per day with 80 qualified staff members and 14 campuses. It has also expanded to include sister programs with valued partners that will allow Summit Kids to continue providing the very best. Summit Start is the first of many new daycare programs, one of which launched in Chestermere in May. This program is also partnering with a senior’s residence and will establish a daycare within the senior’s facility next year.

WESTMAN VILLAGE The Pride of Mahogany Lake BY RENNAY CRAATS For the past 37 years, Jayman BUILT has done it all. As one of the largest builders in Alberta, Jayman has built more than 25,000 multi-family and single-family homes in some of the best communities in the province. So when Jay Westman, Chairman and CEO, says he’s excited about the company’s newest project on Mahogany Lake, people sit up and listen. “Mahogany is an award-winning community. It’s one of the finest communities I’ve ever had the opportunity of building in,” says Westman. With a 63-acre lake, 40 kilometres of walking paths, and an abundance of amenities, Westman Village on Mahogany Lake is like no other development in North America. Jayman is proud to be part of it, with 20 buildings and 864 condominium units making up the Westman Village development. The development boasts four unique home types, each designed with living in mind and offering choices of finishing levels that will suit everyone.

library, demo kitchen and fitness centre with spin and hot yoga. It also boasts a theatre, half-court gymnasium, crafts room, woodworking area, golf simulator, and a wine locker. In addition, Westman Village will feature 40,000 square feet of retail space featuring niche establishments like coffee shops, boutique wine stores and barbershops. There are two feature restaurants as well; Headquarters will serve delicious and healthy food while Chairman’s Steakhouse will offer high-end dining in a beautiful lake-front location. “We have every amenity you can think of. Everything is right out your door,” says Westman. The first units will be ready for possession summer 2018 while the entire project will be completed in 36 months. Until then, interested buyers and renters can visit the two show suites at the Jayman offices and three show suites on site at the presentation centre at Mahogany Lake to check out the amazing plans for Westman Village for themselves.

For the first time, Jayman is offering units for rent but with the service and customization for which the builder is famous for.

Jay Westman is thrilled to be part of this development, making Mahogany an even more incredible place to live and play.

“We’re treating rental customers like new-home buyers. We’re offering up to 10-year leasing and we’re letting them customize their homes just as if they were buying the property,” says Westman.

“There’s nothing like this community anywhere,” says Jay. And from a man who has done it all, that’s saying something.

Westman Village also has for-sale condominiums that are surrounded by incredible landscaping—water features, green space, enormous decks, and interlocking paving stones throughout the community. There is a wing for seniors and retirees as well as a building with for-sale luxury condominiums right on the lake. With price points in the development ranging from $220,000 to $1.4 million, there are incredible opportunities for everyone. Jayman has thought of everything, and the amenities of the development are mind-blowing. The 35,000 square-foot Amenity Centre will house a swimming pool, waterslide,

David Wallach - Barclay Street Real Estate Ltd. | 2015 Leaders Alumni

A

Business in Calgary Leader in 2015, Barclay Street Real Estate Ltd., a Calgary-owned full-service real estate brokerage and property management firm, is once again being recognized for its leadership – and there isn’t any question why: David Wallach, CCIM, president and broker, Barclay Street Real Estate, hasn’t stopped pushing the company to greater and more challenging heights. David used his innovative leadership style and strong entrepreneurial spirit to turn the small, Calgary-based establishment into one of the most prominent and respected commercial real estate brokerages in Alberta. Joining a group of senior negotiators who had bought an established real estate firm, David was quick to show his knack for leadership. Assuming the role of president in 2003, and with a rigorous growth plan in mind, the company began to grow. In 2004, the brokerage was rebranded as Barclay Street Real Estate, and in 2007, property management was added to Barclay Street’s portfolio of services. The division has grown dramatically ever since. Barclay Street now manages properties throughout Alberta; however, its local expertise has done anything but stay local. Ever since David established the company’s partnership with TCN Worldwide, a consortium of independent commercial real estate firms that serves a network of over 1,200 commercial real estate firms globally, Barclay Street’s then-national reach has gone global. When it was last awarded for its leadership in 2015, Barclay Street’s property management division was in management of close to 2.3 million square feet of commercial properties, and

the company hasn’t stopped growing since. Today, the company manages over 4.2 million square feet, a fact that David attributes to their employee’s dedication and drive to lead by example, to continually learn and improve, and to figure out how to make their clients’ experiences better. That’s what has allowed Barclay Street to continue to serve businesses throughout Western Canada – and now the world – for more than 40 years. But its accomplishments don’t stop there. Barclay Street Real Estate was recently selected as the 2017 Consumer Choice Award winner in the category of Real Estate-Commercial for southern Alberta. This is the fourth year the company has been selected for the award, and that is the result of employee loyalty and their dedication to walk the extra mile for Barclay Street’s clients. Beyond striving to provide the best real estate expertise to businesses across the globe, part of David’s dedication to leadership involves his community. Barclay Street is continually finding new ways to give back by supporting causes, such as numerous local and national charities as well as foundations. David and the Barclay Street team have pushed the company miles (or rather square feet) ahead in their dedication to making communities and businesses better places for everyone – at home as well as across the globe – and that dedication is part of why Barclay Street continues to find so much success as it strives toward the highest levels of personal, professional and financial attainment.

Bob Robinson - Westcor Construction | 2013 Leaders Alumni

BOB ROBINSON

Westcor Construction

By Rennay Craats When Bob Robinson was given a Leaders Award in 2013, the business world was a very different place. Since then, the downturn has affected every industry and eroded the Alberta economy. True leaders are those who find a way to get through the down times and out the other side stronger, and Robinson has proven he deserves the title. Robinson weathered the downturn with continued dedication to quality and customer satisfaction as well as a commitment to the company’s future. As a full-service general contractor and construction manager, Westcor specializes in commercial, institutional and industrial work throughout southern Alberta and has nurtured solid, long-term relationships with clients. Clients can trust projects will be done on time, on budget, and done right, and Westcor takes pride in delivering. Over the past few years, Robinson has focused on getting Westcor Construction’s strategic plan in order, and the result has been a stronger, leaner company that exceeds customers’ expectations in all areas. The process allowed Robinson to nail down where the company is going and how to get there, and more importantly why they are doing it in the first place. “We’ve never done that before. We could always explain what we did and how we did it but to answer why took a while, and what came out was eye-opening,” says Bob Robinson, president and CEO of Westcor Construction. It turned out Westcor was in business for a lofty reason: to build a better world for clients, employees and the community. Robinson and his team do this through their commitment to integrity, quality, and innovation as well as a collaborative approach where one plus one equals so much more than two. Westcor is a large construction company that maintains the personalized service of a small one, making customers feel as though their project is Westcor’s only project.

BOB ROBINSON, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF WESTCOR CONSTRUCTION.

The corporate philosophy of people before profit has the company walking the talk by supporting a large number of charities and causes. This culture of engagement, empowerment and integrity has gone beyond just serving clients and supporting causes. It has also changed how Westcor looks at and conducts its business. “The culture is driving the business now where back in 2013 it was me driving the business. It’s a powerful thing to see the culture take over,” says Robinson. Westcor’s business is now modelled on an inverted pyramid, which encourages valuable contributions from the employees working in the field in order to implement changes that truly improve service levels. Employees from the top down are expected to look at their contributions to achieving the corporate vision and see if there are ways they can do better moving forward. After all, Westcor Construction builds more than buildings. It builds relationships. It builds a foundation on which the future company can sit. And it truly is building a better world, one project at a time.

We know Victor as a trailblazer who has completed the last 12 Boston Marathons, stared down the barrel of a Soviet tank, grown a small business headquartered in his garage into a thriving machine shop, and created a technical leader in the world of directional drilling with Mostar. Not content with introducing the world’s first patented Dual Telemetry MWD system, Victor has continued to adapt to the changing needs of the market by pioneering new technology and delivery models. Victor has launched a cementing services company to ensure Mostar’s directional clients a consistent level of unparalleled service, and has opened Mostar in Texas to bring even more customers the Mostar advantage. Greg Keller - Bon Ton Meat Market | 2010 Leaders Alumni

Bon Ton Meat Market By Rennay Craats

A

lot has changed since Greg Keller, owner of Bon Ton Meat Market, was presented with the Leaders Award in 2010. They moved from the Stadium Shopping Centre into a 7,000-square-foot store in Crowfoot Crossing to accommodate the shop’s growth. Along with the meats on display, Bon Ton now offers ready-to-eat foods like ribs, chili and cabbage rolls prepared inhouse, delectable desserts, and a full-service deli with preservativefree meats. Business is booming and Bon Ton has swelled to a staff of 26 to serve customers better. With all that change, nothing has changed at Bon Ton Meat Market. “Through all the ups and downs and trends and economics, we haven’t changed a thing,” says Keller. “We’ve stuck to our core principles and it has paid off in spades.” Bon Ton has won Calgary’s Consumer Choice Award for Business Excellence for 16 straight years. The reason is simple. Keller refuses to do anything that jeopardizes the company’s 96-year commitment to quality and service. He stocks the cases with hormone-free, antibiotic-free pork; the finest AAA Alberta beef; local lamb; and free-range chicken and turkey. Bon Ton butchers can customize the cut and quantity to suit customers’ preferences and are on hand to answer questions and offer suggestions. “With the explosion of cooking shows, people are getting very creative with food and that’s our strength. We have it all and if we don’t, we can get it. We can customize it to whatever you want,” he says. Bon Ton sells only the highest-quality meats, has an incredible selection, and friendly expert staff both behind the counter and behind the scenes. Keller hires only the best meat cutters in the business, and he operates only the one store to guarantee that the quality isn’t compromised by spreading these skilled employees too thin. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t want to service the whole city. In the past year, the store started offering home delivery for a small flat fee. Customers can place an order by 2:00 and it will be delivered anywhere in Calgary, Cochrane or Airdrie the following day at a time that is convenient for customers. Delivery orders meet the same high standards of quality as in-store ones, and Keller makes sure

each order is perfect and that clients get exactly what they wanted. Corporations are also taking advantage of delivery for their events, ordering anything from beef on a bun and pulled pork to cooked turkeys and roasts. Bon Ton Meat Market remains committed to quality, service and a positive atmosphere just like when it opened in 1921. Keller is proud to give Calgarians an experience when they come into the shop. “Every day is grand opening. It has to be the same level no matter what day or time you come. We’re keeping it very old fashioned,” Greg Keller says. Quality products and old-fashioned personalized service never go out of style.

Our friendly experienced staff are always around to help make sure any customer will be a returning customer.

Over the past 11 years, his company EnviroShred Inc. has become the largest independentlyowned shredding company in Canada, offering clients the peace of mind knowing their confidential papers are being disposed of securely, correctly and in an environmentally-responsible way.

After all, local is important to Olynyk.

And EnviroShred delivers on all counts. It is a mobile shredding company so everything is collected and shredded on site in one of the company’s 12 state-of-the-art shredding trucks.

“We are locally owned and our profits stay in Alberta,” he says. “We try to do business whenever we can with local providers to support our economy.”

“It’s far more secure and most professional organizations and government agencies require on-site shredding,” says Olynyk. “On-site shredding is the only true way to ensure your material is destroyed properly, with less material handling and liability risks for clients.”

EnviroShred supports the local community as well through its involvement with charitable causes and youth sports teams, and it takes pride in its superior local staff. The well-trained employees work hard and are treated like family in return.

Each truck can shred between 5,000 and 9,000 pounds of paper per hour. With a customer base of around 3,000 clients serviced by branches in Calgary, Edmonton and Medicine Hat and 7,000 workplace shredding bins it equates to a lot of paper. EnviroShred conducts nearly 45,000 annual visits to clients ranging from small one-person operations to large corporations and recycles all shredded material – more than 3,300 metric tons of paper per year. The company has grown organically since it began in 2006 and it is in the process of expanding beyond security shredding to include organics and broader recycling. It also offers

“We remunerate our employees better than our competitors do, so we pay a bit more but we expect a bit more too,” he says. These high expectations mean EnviroShred drivers will be on time, professional and do a great job for clients. And clients recognize that giving EnviroShred the nod with consumer awards for performance and service. For more than a decade, EnviroShred Inc. has offered Alberta clients an efficient, cost-effective and secure way to destroy data on site. And as the company realizes its vision as it grows, EnviroShred will continue to be the one to blaze a trail for others to follow in the industry.
