o be a business leader is no small task. The responsibility, dedication and vision demanded by the job is something few people can bear. To be an exceptional business leader – one that can steer a business and its people through both the good and bad times and still emerge a success – is an achievement worthy of praise. In its 10th year, the Leaders Awards are a celebration and recognition of Calgary’s great business leaders. And many great leaders there are. As in past years, the nominations for this year’s awards included an impressive number of individuals from a variety of sectors including media and entertainment, real estate, health care, consumer products, pharmaceutical and insurance. The task of sorting through the nominees and determining the 20 award recipients fell this year to Trevor Winkler, regional managing partner at MNP LLP; David Allwright, dean of the Chiu School of Business at Bow Valley College; and Myron Feser, vice president, sales, at ATB Business & Agriculture. “Despite the current economic times, we still need to take time to acknowledge and recognize people and businesses in our community that are doing great things,” says Winkler. “These awards are a prime example of doing so – there are still a lot of great things happening in this city.” Indeed Calgary’s economic climate has been a challenge for all of the recipients, many of whom are seasoned survivors of down cycles. “It’s important that business leaders in Calgary get the recognition that they deserve, particularly the ones that are able to weather the current economic conditions,” says Allwright.

The Judges

“A lot of these people have been through this before – they’re examples of how you survive the boom-and-bust economy.” Regardless of which industry they’re in, each of the recipients displayed one thing in common: “What truly stood out was each leader’s unwavering resilience in the face of challenging times,” says Feser. “Each of their stories was inspiring and it showed just how important strong leadership is to make it through a variety of trying situations.”



Another standout quality: what the recipients do for their community. “I was really impressed with the commitment that each nominee has made to make Calgary an even better place, through community involvement and philanthropic activities,” says Feser. “It’s evident that these leaders aren’t just passionate about their business, they’re passionate about Calgary and all of its diverse communities.” Winkler also highlights the impact the recipients have on their own business teams, particularly future leaders. “Their mentorship and leadership will no doubt lead to more and more successful leaders for generations to come.” In his fourth year as a judge, Allwright continues to be impressed by all the nominees. “Every year the judging gets tougher because the range of applicants gets better. It’s a very rewarding experience to be able to do something like this – because you do hear a lot of doom and gloom. It’s nice to learn about businesses that are not only doing well but are thriving and have been through this more than once.”

MOVING FORWARD AS LEADERS IN CALGARY’S DESIGN-BUILD INDUSTRY In 2016, Lynn Donaldson & Associates was pleased to be a Leaders Award winner. Since then, the family-owned design firm has rebranded, has a new logo, and new leadership. The company is now known as LD&A.

Lynn has plenty to be proud of as she plans to scale back on her time as the face of the company. LD&A has won numerous awards and Lynn herself has been recognized twice as a leading female entrepreneur, in addition to being a 2016 Leader.

“Lynn Donaldson & Associates is just too long,” founder Lynn Donaldson smiles as she explains about the new LD&A branding. “Also, while I am still around, the company has progressed beyond me. My son, Neil Bailey, is actively managing the company. Our senior designer, Amy Adams, has returned from maternity leave. Despite a slow start to the year, we have several projects on the go.”

“I was very honoured and proud to be part of such a prestigious group,” she says of her Leaders award. “These awards give credibility to everyone.”

Lynn launched the company in 1988 from her basement, but it didn’t take long for the custom design-build firm to become a huge success. Now, a full team of interior designers, carpenters, custom cabinetmakers, and project managers design, build, and renovate, bringing clients’ visions to life. Neil Bailey started at LD&A by assembling and staffing a fabrication shop, building on his years of experience as a certified carpenter. He’s excited about furthering the mission, values and reputation of LD&A, and enjoys working on unique building projects that combine technology, science, innovation and creativity.

As the founder reflects on her career, from working out of a basement office, moving to a commercial location, becoming recognized as a premier design-build firm in Calgary, and watching with pride as her son takes over the reins, she cites “Creating an environment specifically for each client and watching their delight at the results… we are great problem solvers!” as what she loves the most about her professional journey. “Have the courage to get out front and lead!” Lynn says to other entrepreneurs and would-be Leaders. “Plan and forecast. Frank Lonardelli ARLINGTON STREET INVESTMENTS While it seems to some that Arlington Street Investments (ASI) came out of nowhere to become a leading real estate owner and developer in the city, president and CEO Frank Lonardelli has certainly paid his dues and studied his craft. He has been in the real estate development and investment business for the past two decades. He built three companies from the ground up and spent a great deal of time over the past 10 years sitting on boards and restructuring real estate assets.

It will have an 8,000-square-foot retail presence on the main floor featuring unique retailers that will significantly service the trade area. The vertical structure will be home to 34 unique, high-end residential units, making it the perfect retail/residential mixed-use development in this high-profile intersection. The ASI team has taken a focused approach to this area, defining seven potential development sites five years ago. But to make it happen ASI had to acquire approximately 40 buildings. To most people, especially in the development community, that would be an impossible undertaking, but Lonardelli was up for the challenge. “That portfolio took three years to put together, 24-7. That three-year time frame actually equates to investing 15 years’ worth of energy to accomplish the results we’ve been able to achieve,” he says.

ancy E. Klensch decided that just OK childcare wasn’t OK at all. She felt strongly that her son – and every other child – deserved to be engaged, captivated and involved in his community, but she couldn’t find a suitable program. Klensch was so disappointed by the lack of quality childcare programming that she changed her life completely to make it better. “I quit my corporate job and opened Summit Kids in 2009. The driving force behind what we do comes from my son, and the compass I use is ‘would I want this for my own child?’” says Klensch, founder of Summit Kids. The result is a revolutionary childcare experience for children from 12 months to kindergarten-aged, as well as after-school and spring break and summer programs for elementary students. Summit Kids offers a holistic, child-centric approach to childcare and education-enhancement programs that are delivered by a highly-qualified, inspired staff.

The process is simple for clients. They can schedule their visit frequency according to their needs or book a purge appointment for a one-time shred. Regular clients use the shredding bins provided and clients can even watch their materials being shredded thanks to closed-circuit video monitoring in the trucks. Each truck can shred between 5,000 and 9,000 pounds of paper per hour. With a customer base of around 3,000 clients serviced by branches in Calgary, Edmonton and Medicine Hat and 7,000 workplace shredding bins it equates to a lot of paper. EnviroShred conducts nearly 45,000 annual visits to clients ranging from small one-person operations to large corporations and recycles all shredded material – more than 3,300 metric tons of paper per year.
