T

he Lekki Toll Gate incident of October 2020 involving the Nigerian Army and #EndSARS protesters has attracted the attention of the United States in its “Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 2020’’. The report noted that on October 20, 2020, the security forces enforced curfew by firing shots into the air to disperse protesters, who had gathered at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos to protest abusive practices by the Nigerian Police Force’s Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). According to the report, police officers engaging in crowd-control operations attempted to disperse crowds using non-lethal tactics, such as firing tear gas, before escalating their use of force.

rmed with a new technology, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said it will resume its suspended Continuous Voter Registration from 28 June. The Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, at a news briefing on Thursday said that the exercise would last till September 2022. Yakubu announced that the Commission would replace its Direct Data Capture Machine (DDCM) introduced in 2011 for voter registration with a new technology called, INEC Voter Enrolment Device (IVED). The registration exercise took place continuously from April 27, 2017 and was suspended on Aug. 31, 2018. The suspension was “to enable the commission to prepare the data for the production of register of voters and printing of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) for the 2019 general elections’’. Yakubu said that INEC could not resume the exercise in 2019 due to litigations that followed the general elections and several offcycle elections, particularly the Kogi and Bayelsa governorship polls. He added that the CVR could not also come up in 2020 largely due to the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic.

T

he Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami made the disclosure on Thursday during a briefing that Nigerians risked between seven to 14 years of imprisonment as prescribed by the constitution if they failed to obtain the NIN registration, adding that the government would not allow citizens to enjoy services without an identified number. Further, the Minister explained that while obtaining a SIM card may be optional, NIN was mandatory, saying that many of the transactions conducted in the country were supposed to be done with NIN. However, a few hours later a tweet was released saying the minister was quoted out of context and Pantami said he did not mention 14 years imprisonment, adding that he stated that the National Information Management Commission (NIMC) has been 14 years in existence since 2007.

CAN BRANDS BENEFIT FROM CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY INITIATIVES? FEYISITAN IJIMAKINWA

M

ost times, when we hear the term, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), especially in this clime, pictures of employees cleaning the streets near their base of operation, or the donation of a renovated or newly built road by a company, or the beautification of a roundabout, or on a grander scale; donation of a hospital ward, or renovation of a block of classrooms in a school or the donation of a lecture theatre to an institution of learning, readily come to mind. All these can qualify as CSR initiatives. However, there is more to CSR than the ‘one off, photoops’ that most brands engage in, in this part of the world. Social responsibility means that businesses, in addition to maximising shareholder value, should act in a manner that benefits society. Socially responsible companies should adopt policies that promote the wellbeing of society and the environment while lessening

negative impacts on them. Companies can act responsibly in many ways, such as promoting volunteering, making changes that benefit the environment, and engaging in charitable giving. Consumers are more actively looking to buy goods and services from socially responsible companies, hence impacting their profitability. Social responsibility is not new to Nigerians but the scale and scope of CSR has gone down, to the point that consumers (public) are now resigned to seeing very few big brands engage in occasional ‘Corporate Philanthropic Responsibility’. This is actually only one of the four types of CSR initiatives, the other three being Environmental, Human Rights and Economic. These occasional philanthropic gestures are often backed with the glam of publicity, and one ends up with the impression that it is more for the cameras than for the cause. Businessday.ng

many other indirect windows, offers brands ‘indirect’ opportunities of connecting with consumers, leveraging relationships and getting the desired result of market share. In 2011, Professor Michael Porter of the Harvard Business School put forward a radical proposition to global corporations. He says, “Businesses must reconnect company success with social progress. Shared value is not social responsibility, philanthropy, or even sustainability, but a new way to achieve economic success. It is not on the margin of what companies do but at the center”. Porter’s theory of “shared value” takes the concept of corporate social responsibility further. He argues that companies should use their interactions with society – and more importantly address society’s problems – to drive new business opportunities and create a source of significant untapped profits. “Corporate social responsibility Is CSR for all brands? encompasses not only what companies do with I dare say that there are different ways to the customers’ their profits, but also how they make them,” according hearts and pockets. It can’t be gainsaid that most brand to a definition from the Corporate Social Responsibility handlers wish they had to spend little or nothing to Initiative at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. become market leaders. There is a local maxim that says “It goes beyond philanthropy and compliance and ‘you spend money to make money’ and that implies that addresses how companies manage their economic, social, every kobo spent on CSR and other marginal initiatives and environmental impacts, as well as their relationships can deliver more to the brand, on the long run. marketplace, the supply chain, the community, and the public policy realm.” Can CSR increase brand profits? Studies have shown that brands that fully integrate CSR into their operations can expect good financial returns on their investments. Brands integrating CSR have shown to increase sales and prices as well as reduce employee turnover. One of the reasons why brands increase profits when incorporating CSR into their business model is because customers pay attention to the way brands react to social and political issues, and will often boycott companies with negative values. Brands utilising CSR promote values, which ultimately increases customer traffic, thus increasing company profit. What are the benefits of CSR for brands? While it is a reality that businesses operate with the goal of maximizing profits, it is still essential that they maintain a good relationship with the social environment that they operate in. Businesses that can demonstrate reliance on society and invest in their social responsibilities seem to have a greater chance of success, which is where social responsibility comes into play.

Brands that are socially responsible are demonstrating their ethical practices in how they conduct business. Customers are highly aware of local, national and global issues, and their buying decisions are influenced by these issues, resulting in them buying more from companies that show concern and display positive actions over issues that resonate with customers. It may boost the • brand’s public image. Companies understand the importance of the public, especially targeted audiences, and having a positive perception of them as well as their social responsibility to the public. Delivering high-quality products and services at a good value, excellent customer service, after-sales support, and being involved in civic causes all demonstrate how the brand cares about its customers, and the environment as a whole. Brands with good CSR policies tend to get more as well as better media coverage, which advertises the company and improves brand image. • It c a n i m p r o v e t h e attractiveness of your business to investors. Potential investors use a company's social responsibility as a part of the criteria for deciding whether to invest in the company or not. This is important especially in this era of globalization and attracting necessary external funding. Many startups can relate to this. Last line: Corporate Social Responsibility doesn’t have to be grand but it should resonate with a message that says-clearly and loudly- “customers and the society are at the centre of all that we do.” .BD Feyisitan Ijimakinwa is a Reputation and Perception Management expert. AFFIRM!! AFFIRM!! AFFIRM!! STEPHANIE ERIGHA

M

ost of us have heard the saying “You are what you eat”. Well, I present to you: “You are what you speak”. Why is this though? The mouth is the most powerful organ of the body. Words spoken cannot be taken back and if you say something over and over again, every day, you are more likely to believe it. You can easily become your words. Disclaimer: This is not a religious piece; this is just a basic, natural life principle which has been proven to work if applied correctly. Speaking positive statements consistently to change the outcome of your actions, efforts and life in general is called Affirming. Those statements spoken, deliberately and confidently out loud are called Affirmations. Here is why it is good to affirm; 1. You can speak to anything in your lifeAffirmations work for any sphere of life including career, health, business, finances, etc. There is no limit to what you can say as long as you say it consistently and confidently. As you speak, you will begin to see changes along the way, maybe not immediately, but definitely. 2. It raises your vibration- Life will definitely throw you some lemons, but affirmations can turn those lemons into sweet lemonade. There’s a certain energy we have every day, and sometimes, you may wake up feeling low, with or without reason. Speaking positively before you start your day can change the course of the day and make you happier and pumped than if you just went with the flow. You can choose to have positive energy, all day, all week and all year just by changing what you say. 3. It is contagious- Once you start, you can’t stop. Once it works, you’d want to tell everyone about it (at least Businessday.ng

hopefully!). People feed off other people’s energy all the time, so it is very possible to change people’s energy and create a positive environment just by speaking the right words each day. 4. What do you stand to lose? - But really, what do you stand to lose? Isn’t it better to speak positively than negatively? It’s not like to can change anything by worrying or talking down on yourself. The first step to turning a problematic situation is by changing your mindset. It all starts in your mind (belief) and then is turned into reality by speaking. You don’t have to crack your head on what to say daily. There are countless resources out there, already written/ spoken affirmations that can help you. You can even customise your own affirmations. Some people even go as far as recording their own voices and speaking along each morning. P.S- It’s best to start your day with affirmations before anything else. You can find podcasts, social media posts, graphic posters and written words online that you can use to affirm. How to Accomplish your Life’s Goals – A Review of Tolu' A. Akinyemi’s Unravel Your Hidden Gems Title: Unravel Your Hidden Gems Author: Tolu' A. Akinyemi Publisher: T & B Global Concepts Limited Year of Publication: 2018 Number of Pages: 376 Category: Self Help

UNRAVEL YOUR HIDDEN GEMS T

oday, a lot of people seem to spend their whole lives dissatisfied, feeling empty and meaningless. They are hoping and wishing for their lives to improve but aren't taking any action to turn their lives around. It is why Tolu' A. Akinyemi, the author of Unravel Your Hidden Gems, asks: Why not put your gifts and talents to work?

This book, Akinyemi says, was written to inspire people, because he had seen it too often that many people do not live to their full potential. They are stuck, have the potential to be great, but choose not to be. The author begins the book with the challenges standing between you and a meaningful life and identifies the factors that influence a person’s potential. It is not as if any of this is new but, in 7 parts, Unravel Your Hidden Gems offers a variety of principles in a clear format. Akinyemi reminds readers that every person is the architect of their fortune, shouldn’t blame others for their problems and must refuse to accept defeat if they want to build your own fortune. To get the prize, you must be willing to pay the price. It is also important to recognize opportunities when they come or they will pass you by. Unravel Your Hidden Gems tells you why we must recognize opportunities, how to identify promising changes unfolding around and act to take advantage of them.

As we continue to pursue our goals and dreams, the author recommends that having faith in ourselves is not enough. Akinyemi explains that believing in oneself is essential for doing anything challenging but God can lead us to the right path where we can realize our dreams. You can sense that Akinyemi’s belief is firm but readers of Unravel Your Hidden Gem might feel that the author is trying to force his beliefs on them. And sometimes, Akinyemi makes the same point again and again in different chapters and this might stop the reader from enjoying the book. The end of this book challenges readers to stand up, shed their fears and inhibitions. All you’ve got to do is believe you have something of value go offer the world; do more and achieve more because if you don’t believe in ourselves, then who else will? This full book of essays is a perfect manual for becoming a better person capable of achieving your dreams. If the principles of the book are properly applied by the reader, then you have taken a big step in discovering a path that will lead you to living a meaningful life. MONEY

N

igeria recently joined the league of countries in a recession as it entered into its second recession in five years. As you already know, the economy has been at mercy of COVID-19 and a drop in oil price which hit the already fragile economy like a tornado, wiping away government revenue needed to grow the economy. After all the speculations, guesses and signs that it was looming, the recession finally happened thanks to the economic strain from the pandemic. The word Recession sounds frightening to most people as they see it as a period when finances dry up. However, as the saying goes when the going gets tough, the tough gets going. While a recession is something beyond our control as individuals, we can control how we respond to economic instability and ensure that we will not only survive, but come out of it stronger. There is no better time than now to keep a keen eye on your money. If living through a pandemic was not enough to keep you on your toes concerning your finances, the recession is a louder reminder. What is a Recession Before we get too far, let’s walk through what a recession actually is. A recession happens when there’s a slump in growth and economic activity for at least two quarters (about six months). The good news is that a recession does not last forever. Instead of panicking and worrying during a recession, there’s still a lot of good work you can do with your own personal finances despite what is going on in the economy. Here are a few tips on how to get your finances through the recession and even thrive through it. Businessday.ng

MANAGING YOUR MONEY DURING A RECESSION MERCY AYODELE

Keep a positive mindset As scary as recession is, it is important to stay positive during it period. On a practical level, it is hard to remain positive when you are surrounded by bad news on the recession. However, it is important to understand that your state of mind and how you feel has a direct impact on your actions and the results you achieve. You might need to minimise your consumption of the press and media and look out for good news and opportunities in a recession because there will always be one lurking around the corner. Panicking does not help during this period because it has an immediate effect on your decisionmaking abilities and adds to the

already-high-stress that everyone around you is experiencing. Boost your savings This is also a good time to boost your savings. A recession most times affects the ability to earn money because of weak economic activities. When the economy starts to dip, jobs and incomes can be put in jeopardy so it is a good time to beef up your emergency fund. While income may decline during the period, expenses will likely stay the same as you will still need to pay rents, utilities, groceries among other things. So it is time to make savings a habit. There are some great savings apps that could help

on top of your debt payments to ensure that they are not negatively compounding to the point that you need to take on even more of a financial burden. Find creative ways to bring in money

like PiggyVest, Cowrywise, Alat and so many others. Cut spending and live within your means Next, it’s time to start putting your spending plan to action. If you already have a budget that you’ve been working with, you will want to take the necessary time you need to revisit it, review it, and make sure that it’s in your best interest for these difficult times. It’s always a good idea to go through your monthly expenses and identify which items are necessities and those that are not. This may require adjustments on where or how you are spending

your money and cutting down on certain areas. If you have yet to create a budget, now is the time to start and you need to take this seriously.

A familiar saying goes “don’t put all your eggs in one basket,” and this adage could be applied to your source of income. A common occurrence during a recession is job loss. Relying on one source of income could be risky during this period, because if hard times hit your company and it results in job loss, the only source of income could be lost and this could affect your ability to meet all your financial obligations. Multiple streams of income can help during this period. Because if one dwindles, to can fall back on another to keep you afloat. You don’t necessarily have to get a second job, having multiple streams could come in different ways like renting out a room in your home, renting out a space in your garage or any other creative idea. In conclusion, remember to stay positive and look out for the opportunities in a recession. A recession does not last forever.BD

Learning how to live frugally can be a great strategy during a recession. If you can do without it for a while, maybe it is not so necessary. Minimise your debt In a recession, debts can get out of hand. However, carrying high levels of debt can be very risky, because any unexpected changes to your financial status could end up affecting your ability to pay these debts. HOW LAURA IAFRATE LEVERAGES POWER OF SOCIAL MEDIA TO EXPAND HER ATHLEISURE BRAND

S

ocial media has become a viable platform for businesses of all kinds, sizes, and demographics.

From selling an idea to a product, people from all over the world are harnessing the power of Instagram, YouTube, and other online portals to bring their work to the world. Venezuelan model Laura Iafrate is also enjoying exploring the many social media potentialities to promote and expand her sustainable athleisure brand. Athleisure or athletic wear, which doubles up as leisurewear, is the new talk of fashion town. It came into its own when the fashion industry realized that there is a group of people who wished to find cohesive clothing for their workouts, workplace, and social life. Laura, one of the early spokespersons for the trend, says, "Clothes need to suit our needs. While having a walk-in closet and wardrobe overflowing with clothes is fun to imagine, it's not easy to maintain. People who are on-thego want something versatile and can shape-shift into all aspects of

their active life."

Laura's brand of athleisure echoes her belief system, which is "creating aesthetic, practical wear out of sustainable fabrics." To do that she uses her Instagram, which boasts of 80.8K followers, sustainably. She says, "I am a professional model, and it's practical for me to post pictures of me wearing my designs. The right lighting, perfect location, and an attitude to match are the keys to keeping my followers on my trail and informing them about the benefits of sustainable fashion." Her page is professionally constructed and interspersed with snapshots of her life at home as a wife, cook, and mother. "I use my social media to create a bridge between people and me." She says, "It helps me do what I do best in the best way." BD

EASTER RECIPE: CLASSIC GLAZED HAM

Prep: 40 min Cook: 3 hr 15 min

Glaze, until glossy and well browned, about 45 more minutes.

Apple-Maple Glaze:

Ingredients

Boil 2 cups apple cider in a saucepan over medium-high heat until reduced to 1/2 cup, 8 to 10 minutes. Reduce the heat to low; add 1/2 cup each apple jelly and maple syrup, 1/4 cup wholegrain mustard, 1/2 teaspoon allspice and 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg.

1 9- to-10-pound bone-in fully cooked smoked ham (butt or shank half)

Mustard-Orange Glaze:

2 tablespoons whole cloves (optional) 1 1/2 cups Glaze

Mix 1 cup light brown sugar, 3/4 cup dijon mustard and the grated zest and juice of 1 orange in a bowl.

Directions Remove the ham from the refrigerator and bring to room temperature, about 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Trim off any skin from the ham. Use a sharp paring knife to score through the fat in a diagonal crosshatch pattern without cutting through to the meat. Insert the cloves into the ham (if using), placing them at the intersections of the cuts. Put the ham, flat-side down, on a rack in a roasting pan. Pour 1/4 inch water into the bottom of the pan. Transfer to the oven and roast until a thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the ham registers 130 degrees F, about 2 hours, 30 minutes (about 15 minutes per pound). Increase the oven temperature to 425 degrees F. Pour half of the Glaze (see below for glazes) over the ham and brush to coat. If the water in the bottom of the pan has evaporated, add more. Return the ham to the oven and roast, basting every 10 minutes with the remaining

HoisinS p i c e Glaze: Toast 2 teaspoons five-spice powder in a small saucepan over medium heat with 1 tablespoon peanut oil, about 1 minute. Add 1 cup hoisin sauce, 3 tablespoons each honey and rice vinegar, 1 tablespoon soy sauce and 1 cup water. Boil and reduce to 1 1/2 cups, about 5 minutes.

Pineapple-Apricot Glaze: Grate the zest of 2 limes; set aside. Squeeze the juice into a saucepan; add 8 thin slices ginger and 2 cups unsweetened pineapple juice. Boil until reduced to 1/2 cup, 8 to 10 minutes. Strain, then add the lime zest, 1 cup apricot preserves and 1/4 cup dijon mustard.BD

PSG LOWER MBAPPE’S TRANSFER FEE

F

rench Ligue 1 champions, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are reportedly losing patience wit h Kyli an Mbapp e's contract renewal and are willing to lower his price tag for clubs interested in signing him this summer. Mbappe's current deal runs until 2022 and in the event the two parties do not reach an agreement to extend his stay, PSG may lose him on a free transfer next summer. According to Le Parisien, PSG have grown impatient with, what is deemed, an uncomfortable situation as the two parties have yet to reach an agreement, and the club are willing to lower their transfer demands. Mbappe's asking price would be between 120-150 million euros should a club wish to make a move this summer. Meanwhile, Mbappe has recently complained over the excessive criticism he has suffered this season in France. "The most important thing is to feel good where we are and have fun every day," said Mbappe after Les Blues' 1-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina.".BD

ATLETICO FACE TOUGH SEVILLA TRIP AS BARÇELONA, MADRID CONTINUE TO CHASE

tletico face tough Sevilla trip as Barçelona, Madrid continue to chase

T h e March international break is in the past and now focus turns back to domestic football, with just 10 matches remaining in Spain’s top tier. Expect fireworks on Matchday 29 as leaders Atlético de Madrid face one of their toughest remaining tests away at Sevilla FC, while FC Barcelona and Real Madrid will meet two relegation-threatened teams battling for every point they can muster. The first of the three LaLiga Santander matches on Saturday sees Spain’s two remaining Europa League participants square off: Granada CF vs Vi l l a r r e a l C F, eighth vs seventh. It’s also a fixture that has produced 13 goals over these two teams’ last three meetings, so the nets at the Nue vo Est adio de Los Cármenes

could take a beating. Real Madrid are back in action on Saturday afternoon at 4.15pm CET, hosting SD Eibar. Even though the Basque side haven’t won any of their past 11 LaLiga Santander matches, they have been competing well in almost every match and gave the reigning champions a scare when they met earlier in the season, a match that Los Blancos ultimately won 3-1. CA Osasuna vs Getafe CF follows and this could be the match where Chimy Ávila returns from 14 months of knee injury pain. He made Osasuna’s matchday squad last time out and then took part in a friendly against Eibar during the international break. The dynamic

and talismanic Argentine forward is now ready for competitive action, and it can’t come a day too soon for Osasuna. On Sunday, the first fixture of the day sees D. Alavés host RC Celta as the home side desperately seek points following a poor run of form. Elche CF are down near the bottom too and will also give everything they have for the points on offer when they play Real Betis, but that won’t be easy as the Andalusian side boast the fifth-best record in all of LaLiga Santander for the calendar year of 2021. Later, Valencia CF travel south to spend Easter Sunday taking on Cádiz CF at sunset. The match sees Cadiz’s prolific striker Alvaro Negredo come up his former side, with whom he spent three seasons in the mid-2010s before a number of spells abroad. On Sunday night, at 9pm CET, there is a blockbuster fixture as fourth-placed Sevilla FC welcome league-leading Atlético de Madrid to the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan. This is one of the trickiest fixtures remaining for Atleti in their bid to win the title, so a victory would make a huge statement while a draw or defeat would throw the title race even more open than it already is. This fixture has finished 1-1 in the past two campaigns, but that kind of result might not be enough for Diego Simeone this time as he returns to take on his former club. FC Barcelona’s Matchday 29 fixture takes place on Monday night when they play Real Valladolid at the Camp Nou. The Blaugrana had a lot of fun on their last Monday night outing, thrashing Huesca 4-1 and scoring some great goals in the process. Real Valladolid are often a tough nut to crack, but Barça will be confident of another home win to keep up their excellent domestic form..BD Businessday.ng

ERLING HAALAND TO BARCELONA OR REAL MADRID?

E

rling Haaland's agent Mino Raiola was pictured arriving in Barcelona on Thursday, but Borussia Dortmund director Michael Zorc insisted the club have "made our intentions clear" over the striker's future amid ongoing links with the LaLiga giants. Barcelona are one of a number of elite teams to have been linked with the Norway international following a goal-laden 15-month spell with Dortmund that has seen him score 49 goals in 49 appearances. Real Madrid, Paris SaintGermain, Manchester City and Manchester United have also shown a reported interest in Haaland, who is believed to have a €75million release clause in his contract that comes into effect from 2022. But talk of a move to Camp Nou at the end of this season intensified on Thursday after Spanish outlet Sport published a video showing Raiola and Haaland's father, Alf-Inge, emerging from an airport and being driven away in a private car. It was reported that the driver is a member of Joan

Laporta's staff, suggesting Raiola and Haaland senior were on the way to a meeting with the recently elected Barca president. However, when questioned about the alleged meeting, Dortmund chief Zorc said he is "relaxed" about the 20-year-old's future and joked his entourage may have jetted to Catalonia for another reason entirely. "I spoke to Mino Raiola . We've made our intentions very clear," he told Sport1 "There's no problem if Alfie and Mino want to sun bath on the Mediterranean Sea. I am relaxed because I know what we want!" Speaking recently, Raiola suggested he was too cautious when moving star client Haaland from Salzburg to Dortmund in January 2020 and hinted the in-demand striker may seek pastures new in the next window. Haaland has scored 21 goals in as many Bundesliga games this term, adding another 10 from six games in the Champions League, a competition in which he tops the scoring charts.BD

CRISTIANO RONALDO'S DISCARDED PORTUGAL ARMBAND SOLD FOR €64,000

T

he captain’s armband that Cristiano Ronaldo angrily threw to the ground during Portugal’s World Cup qualifier in Belgrade last week has been sold to an unidentified bidder for €64,000 (£54,000) at a charity auction, Serbian state TV reported on Friday. A local humanitarian group put the blue armband up for online bidding to raise money for the medical treatment of Gavrilo Djurdjevic, a six-month-old boy with spinal muscular atrophy. The three-day auction did not pass without controversy as some participants tried to disrupt the process by putting up unrealistically huge sums. The fake bidding triggered public outrage with authorities pledging to find and punish the culprits.

angry display could lead to Fifa sanctions. “I always give and will give everything for my country, that will never change,” he said in an Instagram post. “But there are difficult times to deal with, especially when we feel that an entire nation is being harmed.” The Dutch referee Danny Makkelie later apologised, telling A Bola: “As a referee team, we always work hard to make good decisions. When we are in the news in this manner, it doesn’t make us happy at all.” BD

Moments before last the match with Serbia ended in a 2-2 draw on Saturday, Ronaldo walked off the field after his injury-time goal was disallowed. The Portugal forward dinked the ball over the Serbia goalkeeper and it looked as if it crossed the line before being cleared by the defender Stefan Mitrovic.
