What does Trading Standards Approved mean? Trading Standards Approved is the accreditation that qualifying businesses have achieved having been vetted by Trading Standards Professionals and undergone a check by at least one Trading Standards Service. Businesses must have satisfied the requirements of the code established by the Local Authority Assured Trader Scheme Network (LAATSN). Businesses that have achieved the standard and have agreed to abide by the code are issued with a certificate of their Trading Standards Approved status. Only those businesses that are committed to treat their customers fairly and in accordance with the accepted code of practice are listed. The Business Approval Register is supported by Local Authority Trading Standards Services and we employ Trading Standards Professionals to assist

businesses and consumers should they need advice on current consumer protection laws.
Do we monitor our members? After a business has been accepted and approved, we provide them with Customer Charters and Customer Review Forms. It is a requirement of membership that these are made available to their customers. Business performance is monitored and all feedback is verified and reviewed to ensure it is positive and customers are satisfied. All members have committed to deliver excellence in customer service and resolve any disputes should they arise.
What if I am not happy or if things go wrong? In the first instance, we ask that the customer approaches the business and provide them with an opportunity to

provide a remedy. This will in almost all cases result in the problem being resolved. If, however, the customer is not completely satisfied, one of our appointed Trading Standards Professionals will approach the member, with your consent, to discuss it. The member has committed to resolve all justified problems and we offer mediation to assist both parties.
The Directory The directory has a shelf life of 6 months from the date of printing but it must be remembered that it is subject to change during this time. Businesses may be removed or choose to leave and new members won’t be listed. Not all of the trades offered by businesses are listed either. Therefore, we recommend that you refer to our website or contact us to check the businesses featured are still members and to find more. If you can’t find a business in our directory that can supply the goods or services you require, we may be able to help. Please contact us before using just anybody and we will check them out. Beware of the Doorstep Sellers Doorstep crime appears to be targeted at older people. Analyses of victims of doorstep crime by the National Trading Standards Tasking Group, in January 2014 found that: 85% of victims were aged 65+, 59% were 75+, and 18% were aged 80 to 84. With 62% of victims living alone.
People are far more susceptible to becoming a victim of crime committed by traders selling in the home. Any one of us can be vulnerable to rogue traders and scammers if caught off guard or conned by clever selling tactics. The pressure to buy is much greater in this type of setting but attempts to bring in legislation to ban ‘cold calling’ have failed and so it is still perfectly legal for someone to cold call or sell at your home.
Know your rights and be better prepared Knowing your rights when someone is selling at your home and being ready to say ‘NO’ to doorstep callers will protect you. The law is on your side and Regulations give you rights that apply to everyone selling in your home, whether invited or not. Following our advice and tips will help.

Display a ‘No Cold Calling’ notice where it is clearly visible to anyone visiting your home. If a trader knocks on your door, when requested not to do so, they may be committing a criminal offence. We have a notice available which should do the trick – please pick one of our No Cold Calling signs up from one of our partner Trading Standards Services.

Subject to some exemptions businesses selling “off trade premises”, which includes your home, must provide you with a written notice stating you can cancel the contract and give you 14 days in which to do so;
• Never pay cash up front. If you do enter into an
agreement at home, for large jobs, agree stage payments and pay as the work is completed to your satisfaction;
• Don’t be tempted by unrealistic claims and never take a
traders’ word for it that they are doing other work in the area. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is;
• Don’t be tempted to buy from the first person you speak to, always obtain more than one quote for work to be sure you are getting a competitive price;
• Beware of traders who do not provide you with a full address for the business;
• Beware of traders that do not provide you with any paperwork;
• Beware of traders who recommend that you call a telephone number to check their credentials;
• Beware of traders who push you to have work done
straight away. A reputable trader will give you plenty of time to get more than one quote;
• Beware of traders offering cheap prices or offering big
discounts. You may not be getting good value for money;
• Beware of traders offering lengthy guarantees as they can be worthless.

Shoppers Guide Knowing what you are entitled to when something goes wrong with an item you have bought from a business isn’t always that simple. This is a basic guide that explains some of your rights that might better protect you or help next time you encounter a problem. Buying Goods Whether what you have bought is new or second hand you will still have rights. This might be a repair, replacement or a refund. Goods must be of ‘satisfactory quality’. This means it should be free from faults, safe, usable and as described. You have 30 days in which to reject the goods (in some circumstances this may be extended) if they are not of ‘satisfactory quality’ but after this, the longer you own them will have an impact on the remedies that are available to you. You won’t have any legal rights if you buy something and then change your mind unless: You have purchased from a shop and they have a returns policy; Your purchase is made at a distance, for example by mail order, over the phone or from a website; or you buy from someone selling at your home or place of work. Under these circumstances
you will normally be entitled to a 14 day cooling off period starting from the day after delivery. You won’t have legal rights if what you have bought was damaged by wear and tear, an accident or misuse or you knew about the fault before you made the purchase.
Buying Services If you have purchased a service, the service must be performed with a reasonable level of care and skill. This means you are entitled to expect a reasonable level of competence from the service provider. If the service is not performed to a reasonable standard you are entitled to repeat performance. This means you can ask the trader to come back and resolve any snags or issues, at no additional charge. Any goods supplied should also meet the standard of satisfactory quality as set out above.
