MTN Chief admits 5G licence not realistic this year The Chief Executive Officer of MTN, Selorm Adadevoh, has conceded that the application for 5G license is not attainable this year as anticipated by the telecommunications company. MTN has already modernised at least 1,322 sites in readiness for 5G rollout and have been engaging regulators on it to have started a pilot. Speaking at a virtual MTN Stakeholders & Media Forum 2022, the MTN boss underscored the need for the 5G licence which he reckons would make the technology centre more competitive in the sub-region. “Yes, we state that we are hoping to do a 5G pilot before the end of this year, is slightly different from securing 5G[license], we are still in discussion with the regulator, I don’t think that timeline is realistic at this point because a lot of things need to happen, certainly an area of interest for us as a business. Our primary reason is we have seen the significant demand for digital services and we also see the lack of high-speed internet in the homes, and what people are trying to do as far as digitisation within the homes is concerned. //MORE ON PAGE 2
