Welcome to the ninth annual Governor’s Economic Summit. The theme for this year’s event is Innovate, Invest, Grow: Utah’s Ascent to the Summit. We will highlight topics ranging from workforce development to leadership, international business, and content marketing.
Even though Utah is a relatively small state in terms of population, it is among the leading states economically. Our strong spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship continue to propel us forward. Forbes and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce both have named Utah #1 state for business and careers, and everyone from the Washington Post to The New Yorker has caught wind of our accomplishments.
One significant area of growth is the increasing demand for highly-skilled technical workers in our high-tech industries. Educational institutions and businesses are working in tandem to train and re-train our students and the current workforce in an expanding array of new skills. Collaboration will continue to play a key role, as government, business, education, and the community work together to build the workforce of tomorrow and ensure our state’s lasting success.
The Governor’s Economic Summit will be a valuable experience for businesses of all sizes. I am confident you will leave today’s training sessions with new ideas to take your respective businesses on their own ascent to greater heights. Congratulations on the success you have already achieved and best wishes for maintaining that trajectory in years to come.
Sincerely,

With 85 percent of economic growth and 95 percent of customers outside of the U.S., your company needs an international strategy to be successful. This panel-- with representatives from companies large and small, emerging and seasoned, and everything in between--will help you identify how to gain access to new markets and customers around the globe. Don’t miss the chance to learn and ask questions from the pros.
ATTORNEY GENERAL SEAN REYES, DAVID SONNENREICH, CHE ARGUELLO
BRAD BERTOCH, KATHY RICCI, GORDON HOLT, BEN HASLAM
Most startups and small businesses rely on debt to start or build their businesses. When the bank says no, what do you do? Equity investment is often out of the question. Fear not! Every day revolving loan funds and other non-traditional lenders help Utah businesses raise the capital they need. This panel explores those sources of capital and will show you the tips, tricks and contacts you need to qualify.
CARRIE MAYNE, BEN HART, DAN GARCEAU, ROB GALLOWAY
Autoliv and US Synthetic have both been recognized for their ability to attract and maintain a high-quality workforce. Much of their success can be attributed to the way they engage their employees in process improvements. This breakout session will highlight their specific success stories and will feature workforce engagement insights for companies of all sizes.
Utah’s close-knit communities, low crime rate, and independent nature sometimes leads to a perspective that government regulation stifles growth. Attorney General Sean Reyes and two of the office’s leading financial attorneys and division directors discuss how regulatory oversight actually levels the playing field for all businesses and leads to greater success for those who play by the rules. When government oversight is done correctly and ethically, investors are protected, legitimate businesses flourish, and malfeasors/fraudsters/criminals are held accountable.
RISE ABOVE THE NOISE: MAKING YOUR MESSAGE HEARD IN A FRACTURED MEDIA WORLD
TOM POST
Vice Media’s recent decision to incorporate virtual reality into its site formally enshrines what we already know: that news is just a form of entertainment. “All the news that’s fit to print” (the New York Times) has morphed into “Today’s gossip is tomorrow’s news” (Gawker.com). Authority, accuracy and fairness exist only in the eye of the website visitor.
Because readers consume and share news in hundreds of different, bespoke and innovative ways, from Instagram to Twitchy, the old rules of communication no longer apply. In the Pandoric commotion that is media, how do you guide an audience to important news and insights about your business? Can you disseminate and control your message? A guide for the confused and conflicted.
Larry H. Miller believed that business had a higher purpose beyond the numbers on a ledger sheet. He instilled in the Larry H. Miller Group of Companies the mantra, “Go about doing good until there is too much good in the world.” By giving, working and serving in our communities, we enrich our lives and the lives of others. We become the very places where people want to work and where the community chooses to do business. It defines how we measure success.
2:00 p.m.
Every company hopes to increase their efficiency. In fact, some companies may even make it to the point of collecting research and data about their operations. But what do you actually do with all of that information? This panel will highlight a few local companies and will provide insights on utilizing analytics to increase your company’s performance.
KAREN GUNN, COURTNEY ANDERSON, SHAUN OLSEN
Entrepreneurs and small businesses have generated 64 percent of net new jobs over the past 15 years. They represent 99.7 percent of all employer firms, hire 40 percent of high tech workers, and produce 13 times more patents per employee than large patenting firms. Utah’s strong ethos of entrepreneurship reflects the power of small business and the need to provide an infrastructure for its growth and sustainability.
engaging content to make a difference. Most companies are either dipping their toes or winging it. This expert panel will discuss the content marketing strategies and techniques that will help you stop wasting time and start growing leads and sales. Some of the discussion points will include:
Cybersecurity requires a workforce that can meet the demands of the modern technological landscape. With representation from education and the private sector, this panel will cover the A to Z of education, procedures, compliance, best practices, mobile, and mitigating your risks so that your business, and our workforce, can become more secure.

DAN BISCHOFF, KELLY HINDLEY, MICHAEL JENSEN, TYLER KIZERIAN, PAT PARKINSON
Content Marketing is the rage right now. Everybody’s doing it, but not everybody is doing it well. Only 38% of organizations say they are effective. That’s because the majority of those companies don’t have a strategy, and don’t produce enough
