• 4 Cups water • 4 Mint tea bags • 8 Teaspoons lime juice (freshly squeezed or purchased) • 4 Half slices of lime for garnish, if • desired • 4 Sprigs fresh mint, if desired • 2 Cups sparkling water (carbonated) • Vanilla coffee syrup, agave syrup or honey to sweeten drink, if desired •

Crushed ice, if desired

Directions • Step1: Bring 4 cups of water to a boil.

Remove from heat and add 4 bags of mint tea.

Allow to steep for 10 minutes. Discard tea bags and pour tea into a small pitcher. Refrigerate for at least 3 hours or until well chilled.

• Step 2: Chill tall glasses in fridge or shortly in freezer, if desired. Add crushed ice, 1 cup of tea, sweetener (if desired) and 1 or 2 tsp lime juice, depending on how tart you like your tea. Stir. Add 1/2 cup sparkling water. Squeeze mint sprig and add to glass. Garnish with half a lime slice, if desired.

TEXAS PRESS ASSOCIATION SUPPORTS REP. JOHNSON’S CALL TO REINSTATE MINORITY NEWSPAPER GRANTS AUSTIN, TX – On August 9, 2017, Representative Eric Johnson (D-Dallas) sent a letter to Texas Health and Human Services Executive Commissioner Charles Smith regarding the Commission’s decision to eliminate the Texas Publishers Association (TPA) outreach campaign that provided funding in the amount of $100,000 to several minority newspapers to publish information regarding enrollment in the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

The campaign has been eliminated despite it being a very minor portion of the massive $80 billion HHSC biennial budget. Representative Johnson stated the following, arguing against the funding cut and urging HHSC to reinstate the program.

“There is still a high demand for minority press, and such outlets have proven to be far more effective than mainstream press and digital advertising at promoting positive health behaviors by printing health information that is greatly valued by readers,” stated Representative Johnson.

“Texas has consistently held the nation’s sec-

ond worst rate of uninsured children. This ad campaign reaches our state’s most eligible communities, including those in my district. Children across Texas have health insurance because their parents read these paper.”

“The funding provided through the campaign directly affects my youngest constituents. Continued funding for the campaign should be seen as imperative to ensuring equitable coverage for Texas’ uninsured children,” Johnson added.

Minority communities rely on their local newspapers for critical health information. With a rainfall of over 1 trillion gallons, over 15,000 people rescued, over 10,000 people in shelters, 450,000 in need of disaster aid, and nine deaths, Hurricane Harvey has undoubtedly been the worst storm that the Houston and surrounding areas have ever encountered! Many residents knew they would probably lose property due to wind and be flooded out, but they were not prepared for was the amount of rain that fell in the last week. The Houston area received half a year’s worth of rain in four days, schools have been closed since Friday August 26th, and are not going to be opening until at least Tuesday September 5th and stores are running out of food and gas. Even if you were fortunate, and you had no rain damage, many were afraid of running out of food and losing electricity. Others were restless and could not sleep because they stayed up tracking the storm in hopes of it not causing flooding and damage to their homes. Others had to evacuate and find shelter due to mandatory evacuations. Hurricane Harvey brought so many uncertainties.

Even though the rain has stopped for now, the forecast predicts more rain on Saturday. This will cause even further flooding and

Russell was a key player in building several renoun structures including the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. What makes these projects even more meaningful is that H. J. Russell employed black contractors to complete the mission.

RBCA: Way Forward

“One of the things that people are talking about is the Regional Black Contractors Association (RBCA). out the high unemployment rate and stabilize the community. Once in a lifetime you will possibly witness a mecca construction makeover of a major United States city. It is affectionately called many things. A historic opportunity, turning challenges into opportunities, keeping pace with the rapidly changing business climate, setting industry benchmarks, an era where you can literally ‘bring your dreams’. But at the top-of-the list is coalition building with college interns on deck. Without inclusion and fair play there is definitely chaos personified.

The RBCA board consist of a dedicated team of “Dallas makers” with a set goal to decrease crime, wipe

Webber Construction, a strong supporter and member, wholeheartedly joins the RBCA in their quest to hire black contractors and ex-offenders on the upcoming S.M. Wright US175 Freeway. Webber Construction has provided scholarships for youth in South Dallas and has set a high standard with other essential community programs. An alliance now co-exist with the black community and prime contractor through a Texas Live and Texas Ranger partnership on the new stadium.

Gerald Alley, principal with Con Real, a general contractor is honorably mentioned by the RBCA. Mr. Alley has personally raised the bar and the ability to hire, i.e., hauling, demolition and janitorial. Con Real has demonstrated commitment of a higher calling and more general contractors will certainly start to emulate his style. To round out the coalition building by the RBCA, we mention Dallas ISD, where the previously incarcerated is already at work on construction sites, State Fair of Texas, Fort worth SubCounty Courthouse and the massive International Inland Port,

which is a story all by itself.

The RBCA has another side. . . that of giving back to the communities they work in. Their brand is part of the X-Offender Program in South Dallas partnering with the Community Development Project. Ask about individuals with felonies.

The RBCA have answers to make you smile. This year they hosted the 14th Annual CLASSIC Golf Tournament. The home repair for senior citizens and disabled veterans is a high profile community act especially for inner city residents.

And with seniors living longer in their own homes this act of kindness is near genius, because it is a pure promotion of RBCA’s image in addition to increasing public interest.

Red Cross Mounts Massive Relief Effort as Thousands Seek Refuge from Catastrophic Floods Across Texas and Louisiana Volunteers working around the clock to provide shelter and supplies to Gulf Coast residents affected by Harvey

– The American Red Cross is working around the clock to help the thousands of people whose lives have been affected by Tropical Storm Harvey as water rescues and evacuations are ongoing throughout the region.

SHELTER Preliminary estimates indicate that at least 6,000 people sought refuge in dozens of shelters in Texas Sunday night. We believe this number to be much higher and will share additional information as it becomes available. Shelters are also open in Louisiana as the storm move to the east. Red Cross North Texas is supporting four shelters in Dallas and one in Irving, with a 5,000-evacuee capacity shelter opening Tuesday morning at the Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center in Dallas.

During a humanitarian emergency, the American Red Cross delivers help to whoever needs it, regardless of citizenship status. Red Cross workers will not question individuals about their citizenship status, nor will they request birth certificates, immigration papers, passports, social security cards or similar documents that could be interpreted as being used to identify the nationality or immigration status of persons seeking Red Cross assistance.

MASS CARE TASK FORCE The Mass Care Task Force, a coalition of four nonprofits, has activated.
