Master of Enterprise (Science) The Master of Enterprise (Science) aims to create skilled leaders and managers who generate value in their organisations and society through effective management, particularly of science and technology.

This innovative degree provides advanced knowledge in the modern organisation as well as the opportunity to develop specific skills in innovation and entrepreneurship in technology intensive organisations. This degree will address the knowledge required to bring science and technology projects to commercial fruition, and to realise these innovations effectively in organisational settings.

Program outline The Master of Enterprise (Science) consists of 12 subjects comprising four core enterprise subjects, four core science subjects, two capstone subjects and two electives.

Who is it for?

The program is designed for individuals with an undergraduate degree in a science or technologybased discipline who are currently working in middle to senior management positions across a variety of sectors and industries.

Small class sizes facilitate the development of valuable relationships with fellow students from a wide variety of industries.

Program details All core subjects are offered in intensive mode and are taught over one or two weeks. Participants can elect to complete either one or two subjects in each block. The final capstone subject is taken over the course of a semester.

Parkville campus Entry requirements: >> An undergraduate degree in a science or technology-based discipline, and at least three years of documented relevant, professional work experience; or >> An honours degree in a science or technology-based discipline, and at least two years of documented relevant, professional work experience; or >> A master degree in a science or technology-based discipline, and at least one year of documented relevant, professional work experience; or >> A doctoral degree in a science or technology-based discipline. and >> Personal statement; and >> English language proficiency (Minimum Band 6.5).

CORE SUBJECTS Students must select four Core Enterprise subjects from the following list: Behaviour and Leadership in Organisations This subject develops knowledge of theories of human behaviour in an organisational setting, and leadership theories and practices. Topics covered include: Strategic human resource management; Human resource management and performance; Effective leadership; and, Improving business performance.

Financial and Performance Management This subject provides the financial analysis and other methods that managers need, in order to lead organisations, monitor and control operations and allocate resources. It also provides an understanding of specific non-financial measures and metrics associated with long-term sustainability and business success.

Managerial Economics This subject provides the core concepts of price theory, and economic policy and management for professional managers. It provides students with the knowledge of rational microand macro- frameworks that are necessary for professional managers to be effective in decision making and resource allocation.

Marketing for Managers This subject introduces the basic theoretical framework of marketing including segmentation, buyer behaviour, product management, market communications, channel management and pricing decisions.

Students are also introduced to basic concepts in market research, management or marketing programs and marketing ethics.

Production and Operations Management Topics include the role of operations; the link between strategy and operations; productivity; decisions in the operations area; planning and control of inventory, projects and the transformation process including Total Quality management, Just-in-Time, kanban and ‘lean production’ systems.

Students will understand the principles and practice of factors which influence the capacity to compete effectively in manufacturing and service operations.

Quantitative Analysis for Managerial Decisions This subject involves skill building in statistical and decision analysis methods for managers, including probability, decision trees and linear programming, and correlation and regression techniques.

Leadership and Management This subject provides the concepts and skills of leadership and management, including the perspective of the CEO and business unit manager, and introductions to the major topics of strategic leadership, business/ organizational behaviour and strategy and competitive and effective performance outcomes.

Students must complete the following Science Core subjects: Commercialisation of Science (MoE) Successful commercialisation of scientific discoveries and new technologies occurs in a unique business environment where scientific and business interests and personalities must productively interact. The subject will develop a critical understanding of the context in which the commercialisation of science occurs, and the opportunities and challenges encountered.

Communicating Science Effectively (MoE) We know that employers value communication above all other skills in their employees. In this subject students will have multiple opportunities to practice, receive feedback and improve both their oral and written communication skills.

Data and Decision Making (MoE) The basis for decision making is often the analysis of data. In order for these decisions to be reliable data must be correctly collected and analysed. To control costs data should be efficiently collected and it needs to be properly stored and managed.

The interpretation of an analysis requires some knowledge of basic statistical ideas and techniques and the results will often be communicated to a non-specialist audience who will make decisions based on the presentation. Alternatively decisions may be made from the analyses and interpretations of others. This subject examines the whole process of data collection, analysis and decision making.

Project Management in Science (MoE) Projects drive most modern science organisations. Learn how to plan and manage projects, and to relate to a client, team members, and to other stakeholders. The subject covers the processes and tools / techniques in project management as well as the ‘soft side’ of managing people in projects.

Students must select both of the following Capstone subjects: Strategy, Ethics and Governance This subject examines the nature of strategy in organisations and the role that organisations play in society by exploring their impact on the people who work in them, the communities that surround them, and other stakeholders.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship Project This research-focussed subject will draw together, and enable students to apply, the knowledge and skills they have acquired in the Master of Enterprise program. They will undertake a practical investigation of an entrepreneurial challenge or an innovation issue and develop a plan for solving this challenge/issue.

Within a specific innovation or entrepreneurship domain to be chosen by the student and agreed by the subject coordinator, this subject will require investigation of all major aspects of the commercialisation potential of the innovation, and the resources and entrepreneurial activities required to bring it to fruition.

ELECTIVE SUBJECTS Students must complete two elective subjects from the University’s graduate level offerings, approved by the program director as relevant to the innovation interests of the student.

Possible subject areas include: social entrepreneurship, biotechnology, information technology or sciences.
