UHDB celebrates its first birthday with ‘Good’ rating We’re absolutely delighted to be marking our first birthday in style by celebrating with a ‘Good’ rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Our staff have shown an incredible commitment to making our new Trust the best that it can be for our patients since UHDB was formed on 1 July 2018. We’re thrilled that the CQC has recognised this following its first inspection of the Trust.

The healthcare regulator inspects services to assess whether they are safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. The report found us ‘Good’ overall and each core service, including Medical Maternity and Critical Care, was rated ‘Good’ for caring.

It’s now been a year since University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust was created on 1 July. It’s been a time of challenge and change but with real progress made in delivering on the promises we made to improve patient care as a result of forming our new organisation.

We’ve recently been awarded a ‘Good’ rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) which recognised much progress since previous inspections at the two former Trusts. Thank you again for all of the hard work that went into the inspection from so many of you. This was our first inspection as UHDB and it started just six months after our merger and in the middle of a busy and challenging winter.

A CQC rating is the very best indicator of how an NHS trust is performing, given the depth of their scrutiny. On behalf of the Board, the Governors and our members, which represent the communities we serve, I want to thank each and every one of our people for this achievement. This gives us a great foundation on which to build and improve our services further.

In creating UHDB, we wanted to achieve three aims. We wanted

to sustain important local services at Queen’s Hospital Burton, to provide Royal Derby Hospital with a bigger population to help support and grow our specialist services, research and education interests, and also to make best use of our community hospitals in Lichfield, Tamworth and Derby by working together with our partners across Staffordshire and Derbyshire.

Over the year, there has been good progress in achieving these aims. We’ve seen services strengthened at Queen’s Hospital Burton, with improvements, for example, in Renal and Urgent Care and recruitment into key posts in specialities, such as Imaging, Cardiology and Acute Medicine. There’s also the capital work to expand the Treatment Centre and progress with the Outwoods development and the multi-storey carpark. For specialist services, we’ve brought back complex cardiology work from other regional centres, created an

integrated Breast Service and have plans for improving our stroke services in Staffordshire. UHDB consultants are now working in the Samuel Johnson Community Hospital, in Lichfield, Sir Robert Peel Community Hospital, in Tamworth, has more specialist clinics and at London Road Community Hospital, in Derby, we’ve further developed our rehabilitation and outpatients offer too.

I was delighted this year that so many colleagues took the opportunity to get involved in our ‘Big Conversation’, which started when 1,000 colleagues met to discuss our long term vision for UHDB; our values and how we should behave with each other and our patients and what ‘big ticket’ actions we wanted to take together. In the end, we had over 70,000 comments and suggestions and these have all helped form the basis of our UHDB strategy, which will be launched at the Public Board meeting on 9 July.

Through all of this, we recognise how tough a challenge this has been for our people. Delivering the opportunities presented by the new Trust will take time and although we should be proud of our achievements to date, we must also recognise that these are still early days in our journey.

That said, congratulations on what you’ve all achieved! Thank you for helping us make our first big steps to deliver ‘Exceptional Care Together’.

Community hospital integral in ‘Good’ rating Our staff at Sir Robert Peel, London Road and Samuel Johnson Community Hospitals have played an integral part in making our first year as UHDB a success. We have achieved our ‘Good’ CQC rating because of each of our 12,500 staff, with colleagues from across all five of our hospitals celebrating this fantastic recognition in style.

Our areas of outstanding practice We were delighted to see the CQC highlight a number of areas of outstanding practice across our Trust.

Here’s six reasons for us to be proud to be #TeamUHDB.

Louise Wood, Critical Care Sister, plays a huge role supporting patients after they’ve been discharged from Queen’s Hospital Burton’s Intensive Care Unit and High Dependency Unit.

We’ve significantly improved levels of recruitment and the retention of staff within our A&E at Queen’s Hospital Burton.

Our patients are invited to attend a follow up clinic to ask any questions about their time in hospital, while Louise also runs a support group twice a year for patients to discuss their feelings.

Sairah Akhter started her career with us as a newly qualified nurse seven years ago but has since gone on to progress to the role of A&E Senior Sister and now helps teach and develop our student and trainee nurses.

Our End of Life Care Team at the Royal Derby Hospital ensure that the final days of our patients’ lives are made as special and as comfortable as possible. The ‘Pop-Up Bedrooms’ project improves the atmosphere of a patient’s room by introducing a large screen by their bedside depicting a range of different landscapes from around the world. We also offer comfort packs for friends and relatives and recently opened a Healing Garden for staff and patients to remember their loved ones.

The Royal Derby Hospital’s A&E runs a number of initiatives to help improve access to healthcare for our Deaf patients and hospital visitors. More than 500 frontline staff have received Deaf awareness training, we have faceto-face interpreters and also have an onscreen video interpreting service SignLive set up on an iPad within the department.

We offer tours of our mortuary at the Royal Derby Hospital twice a week. The tours last for up to two hours, with clinical members of staff and stakeholders given an access all areas tour of the facility and the chance to witness a post mortem examination to help them understand the process so they can explain it to patients and relatives during times of bereavement.

Our Maternity services at Queen’s Hospital Burton and Samuel Johnson Community Hospital have been rated as ‘good’ in all domains for the services they provide to women and their families. The rating has improved since the last inspection in 2015 thanks to the hard work and commitment of staff working within the department. The CQC also commended the team for responding well to patient feedback.

Integration Update

Integrating services to benefit patients Our merger proposal was built on integrating services to improve the care we provide to our patients.

We’re focusing on six new areas of clinical integration, below is an update on our plans:

Vascular

Critical Care

Dermatology

Patients undergoing complex and noncomplex vascular surgery will be repatriated to UHDB from Stoke, providing care closer to home, with the development of vascular outpatient departments in Burton and Tamworth.

We will design a sustainable model of staffing supported by a fully modernised estate and IT systems, as well as harmonising policies and patient monitoring across all sites.

Our Community Hospitals will offer patients care closer to home for dermatological conditions, with our people working across all sites to ensure exceptional care together.

Head & Neck (ENT, OMF & Audiology) We will review ENT and Audiology services to identify areas where we can provide a single, seamless service to patients, in order to reduce multiple attendances.

Gynaecology

Ophthalmology

We will align services and pathways and make better use of our estate and people to create equity across UHDB. We will strengthen nurse led services and pathways for uro-gynaecology services and identify national best practice opportunities.

We will work with our partners through the Staffordshire and Derbyshire Sustainability and Transformation Programmes (STP’s) to create a seamless patient journey and ensure patients receive the right care in the right place at the right time.

Merger benefits continue as cardiac care offered closer to home Patients in Burton and the surrounding areas are now benefitting from receiving cardiac care closer to home, another example of the benefits being provided to patients one year on from the creation of UHDB on 1 July 2018.

Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI), commonly referred to as a coronary angioplasty or stent insertion, has previously been carried out at hospitals in in other parts of the region for patients from South Derbyshire and Staffordshire, but these services are now available to them at the Royal Derby Hospital after the merger.

Since the service commenced in March 2019, 29 patients have already received the care they need closer to home, with 15 further patients booked in up until July 2019.

Dr Aftab Gill, Consultant Cardiologist at UHDB, said:

Burton. This will increase our capacity even further and will mean that even more patients will be able to be treated closer to home. It will also mean that patients only need to have a single admission rather than coming to Burton for one part and then travelling to Derby for the procedure to take place.

“Patients feel more comfortable being treated closer to home.

Coming to the Royal Derby is less intimidating than going to a hospital further away that they’re less familiar with.

“It’s less stressful for our patients as it can be a bit of a trek to get to these other hospitals for their appointments. When you consider that most people that have PCI procedures are more than 50-years-old, it can sometimes be difficult for them to get around. Some patients have had to stay in hotels the night before, which is not ideal.”

Dr Gill anticipates that the service will grow in Derby, but there will be further growth at Queen’s Hospital Burton in the coming months.

The Trust is currently applying for BCIS (British Cardiovascular Intervention Society) accreditation for the Burton site, meaning that interventional cardiology procedures will be able to take place at Queen’s Hospital, bringing care even closer to our patients.

Dr Gill added: “The service will grow at both Derby and

Dr Gill explained: “This would also have benefits in terms of recruitment as it will mean that we can attract more nurses, technicians and other specialist positions, and it will also be a boost for the reputation of the Trust and Queen’s Hospital Burton.

“It’s also good to be able to say to those who are thinking of applying for roles that we carry out the procedures here in the Trust rather than elsewhere.”

UHDB Chairman John to retire in July 2019 On behalf of the entire Trust, we’d like to say a huge thank you to UHDB Chairman John Rivers, CBE, who will be retiring in July 2019.

John has played a hugely significant role in making our Trust what is today during more than 10 years of NHS service.

As well as overseeing the successful birth of UHDB, there has also been a transformation in care during his tenure, with the Royal Derby Hospital opening in 2010 and our Trust growing to become one of the largest university teaching hospitals in the UK. Dr Kathy McLean OBE has been appointed as the next Trust Chairman and will begin

the role on 1 August, having previously held a national role as a member of the Board of NHS Improvement as Executive Medical Director and Chief Operating Officer.

Maura Teager, UHDB Lead Governor, said: “I should like to place on record our thanks to Chair John Rivers. We shall be celebrating his contribution to the Trust when he retires this summer, but we would wish to recognise the work, dedication and leadership he has given for the benefit of all of our patients, communities and staff over the past decade.”

Maternity Open Day Our Maternity Unit at Samuel Johnson Community Hospital opened its doors to expectant mums and partners.

Over one hundred people flocked through the doors to be part of their Maternity Open Day. The open day was enjoyed by new parents, mumsto-be and lots of families, while it gave them a great opportunity to have an in-depth look at our Midwiferyled unit and meet the team who are based there.

Facilities at the unit include an active birth room and two birthing pools, while patients are also given 24 hour access to a midwife.

Meet Belle

Queen’s Hospital Burton Midwife Belle is one of our fantastic midwives at Queen’s Hospital Burton and is currently enrolled in the Trust’s preceptorship package. The programme provides support to newly qualified midwives while they work in different clinical areas across our Maternity department, such as the antenatal ward, post-natal ward and the delivery suite. Belle is currently on her six month rotation in our Antenatal Clinic and has told us why she loves working at UHDB. She said: “Being part of the preceptorship programme has been fantastic for my development, with my current rotation really helping me enhance my skills in antenatal care.

As part of my role, I see patients every day; I do scan reviews and work in the vaccination clinic and with doctors in the consultant clinics as well. My colleagues at Burton have been really lovely ever since I started working here. There’s always someone to lend a hand if you need it and it’s a really lovely atmosphere to work in.”

UHDB surgeons leading the way for gynaecological cancer treatment UHDB is leading the way nationally as a provider of life-saving surgery for patients with gynaecological cancers.

The Royal Derby Hospital is one of the top centres in the UK for laparoscopic “keyhole” surgery in gynaecology and also for ultraradical open surgery for patients with advanced ovarian cancer.

UHDB has pioneered the use of ultra-radical surgery and is now one of the most established centres anywhere for the comprehensive surgery, which can be used to treat patients with advanced ovarian cancer and involves all visible cancer tissue being removed, including from other surrounding organs, like the spleen and liver.

The Trust has become one of the biggest training centres nationwide for keyhole surgery in gynaecology, with around 250 laparoscopic hysterectomies performed each year and the Trust hosting on-site training sessions on the specialty.

treated using keyhole surgery, which involves surgeons making several small incisions, instead of one large wound, and has a number of benefits over traditional open surgery, with patients spending less time in hospital and recovering quicker.

Cancer surviving toddler reunited with doctor who saved her life We were thrilled to reunite three-and-a-half-yearold Ruby Richards with the life-saving doctor who spotted an undiagnosed cancer in her kidney.

Back in November 2017, a little over two weeks after Ruby’s second birthday, her parents Katie and Ashley brought her to the Children’s A&E at the Royal Derby Hospital.

Dr Catherine Barton treated Ruby for what her loved ones had originally thought to be nothing more than a bad cough, before feeling something strange when examining the toddler’s stomach.

This led to a series of tests, before Ruby’s parents were given the shocking news in December 2017 that their daughter had Wilm’s tumour, a type of cancer that originates in the kidneys.

Mum Katie said: “Ruby’s tummy is something that had never been picked up on before, and after all of the scans and tests were done, that’s when we discovered a mass on her right kidney.”

From there, Ruby underwent five months of treatment, including chemotherapy, before having surgery to remove her kidney on 18 January 2018.

Katie added: “She’s bounced back now and we got the all-clear in March 2018, so we celebrated a year of being cancer-free by going to Disney World in Orlando.

It’s not something we ever expected, but we managed to catch it early and Ruby’s doing really well now and that’s just great.

“It’s been a whirlwind but we’re just hoping that it’s all in our past now. She’ll just keep having regular scans and we’ll just take it from her that she’s healthy and happy now.

“Without her, even now, it may have been missed, so we’re very, very thankful to Dr Barton.”

Dr Barton, who also met up with Ruby during her treatment, said that she’s thrilled to see how

well she’s doing now: “It’s not something we ever expected, but we managed to catch it early and Ruby’s doing really well now and that’s just great.

“I did see Ruby when she was undergoing some treatment and she didn’t have any hair. She was doing well then, but now she’s doing so much better, so it’s really nice to see that she’s well now.

She’s cancer-free now, which is amazing, and I just hope that everything stays that way.”

Landmark 2,000th prostate patient screened Two of our Burton-based clinicians who run a voluntary prostate cancer health check programme in their free time have recently checked their 2,000th patient.

Miss Jyoti Shah, Macmillan Consultant Urological Surgeon, and Sarah Minns, Macmillan Urology Advanced Nurse Practitioner, have been carrying out checks for prostate cancer in the community since 2016 and have now screened 2,000 men, diagnosing 69 cases of prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer among men, with the lifetime risk of developing prostate cancer in Caucasian men at one in eight, with more than 47,000 men diagnosed with the condition in the UK every year.

Miss Shah explained: “There is a stigma, embarrassment and fear around prostate cancer and mens’ health in general. If you present with Sarah Minns and Jyoti cancer when it Shah is too late, it is much harder to treat. Receiving the news that you have got cancer is very difficult to take.”

Nevertheless, the 26 screening sessions have attracted huge numbers of men to attend, with many more currently on waiting lists.

“We would encourage all men to get themselves booked in for a check.”

Sister Minns added: “We never realised how much we would achieve and how popular the campaign would become when we first started out. It really is quite an achievement. It’s nice that we’ve had lots of people come back and give us such positive feedback.”

In addition to working closely with local organisations, including Burton Albion FC, Chesterfield Town Football Club and Chesterfield Golf Club, as well as working with Rotary Clubs, Freemason Lodges, Derbyshire Police, places of worship, the duo will be holding their first session at Rolls-Royce in Derby in July, which they have described as a “huge accolade”.

State-of-the-art toilet improving our patients’ hospital experience

Consultants try Pulmonary Rehab Some of our Consultant Respiratory Physicians donned their lycra to take part in a Pulmonary Rehabilitation class at London Road Community Hospital in June.

The classes are held for patients with lung problems and aim to reduce the sensation of breathlessness, increase strength and confidence in patients through a series of resistance and cardiovascular exercises.

Queen’s Hospital Burton has become the first hospital in the region to open a Changing Places washroom for disabled patients.

The state-of-the-art facility provides extra equipment and much more space than a standard disabled toilet to help aid people visiting the hospital to use the toilet safely and comfortably.

In addition to providing a changing area with space for one person and up to two carers, the room has a hoist system and a height adjustable adult-sized changing bench, so that visitors don’t have to change their loved ones on the floor.

UHDB has been able to provide the new facility on site at Queen’s Hospital, thanks to donations raised through Derby & Burton Hospitals Charity.

There are currently only 58 Changing Places toilets in hospitals across the whole UK, with

Lichfield campaigner Tony Clough, whose sister Julie has cerebral palsy, insisting the facility will benefit a lot of families in the area.

He said: “Changing Places toilets provide much-needed assistance and, more importantly, help protect people’s dignity. A lot of us take toilet facilities for granted but these rooms can literally be life-changing for a lot of people, so I’m really grateful to UHDB and Derby & Burton Hospitals Charity for recognising this is an important issue.”

The brand new Changing Places washroom can be used by people of all ages with multiple learning difficulties and physical disabilities and can be found on the ground floor of Queen’s Hospital, opposite the x-ray department.

To gain a better understanding of what their patients have to do in the classes, some of our Consultants decided to put on their sweat bands and get involved in a class themselves!

Dr Ruth Alridge, Consultant Respiratory Physician, said after the session: “It’s been very good and really informative.

It’s been quite hard, but I think I’ll be able to explain things far better to my patients after this.”

Pulmonary Rehabilitation class at London Road Community Hospital

Royal Derby Hospital consultant honoured with MBE We were so proud to see UHDB Consultant Miss Susie Hewitt awarded with an MBE in the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Miss Hewitt first took up a Consultant post in Emergency Medicine with a special interest in the care of children and young people at the Derby Royal Infirmary in 1995 and has been with us ever since.

In addition to being the first woman to ever be appointed into this position at our former site 24 years ago, Miss Hewitt also became the

youngest ever Consultant appointed at the hospital and has gone on to make a huge impact at our Trust.

Miss Hewitt led on the 10 year project to redesign the new build A&E, played a key role in safely relocating acute services to the Royal Derby Hospital and helped develop a rapid assessment “pitstop” in the department – the first in the UK of its type at the time.

She said: “I have worked with many outstanding people during my career and this honour recognises the team work and commitment involved in delivering high quality and compassionate emergency care.

“I am incredibly proud to be recognised in this way and that I have been able to make a difference.”

Kate and Sukh provided an outstanding example to all of our staff by perfectly demonstrating the values that we pride ourselves on.

Joanne is a dementia keyworker at London Road Community Hospital and was recognised for always going above and beyond to provide exceptional care to patients living with dementia.

IT Analyst Kate, and Sukh, who is a Database Developer, showcased fantastic compassion when comforting someone in distress at the Royal Derby Hospital and received our Chief Executive Award as a thank you.

The duo played a crucial role in supporting a member of the public who was suffering with their mental health and stayed with them for a number of hours until they could be reunited with their carer.

She was nominated for the Excellent Employee Award by her colleagues in recognition of her dedication to making going to hospital a less frightening experience for our patients.

Joanne has taken ownership of the day room on Ward 6 and continues to make it an engaging space for patients to relax and partake in ‘normal’ daily activities like washing pots, polishing and sweeping the floor.

Royal Derby Hospital nurse Shazia’s commitment to helping our patients and fellow colleagues saw her presented with our Excellent Employee Award.

Our Antenatal Sonography team at Queen’s Hospital Burton won the first Team UHDB Award as a reward for consistently going that extra mile for patients.

The Ward 405 Sister received 19 Making a Difference Awards nominations from colleagues and one from a patient who she helped while she was off duty.

The team provide an absolutely invaluable service to ensure all of our expectant parents get the support that they need, with Chief Executive Gavin Boyle surprising the team by handing over their award personally.

Colleagues have praised Shazia for being an “exceptional leader” and a “supportive colleague” in her role as a ward sister, while also being such a strong advocate for inclusion and equality across our Trust.

Volunteers mark 1,170 years of service at our hospitals

Our team of volunteers are a massive part of everything that’s good about UHDB and so it was a real pleasure to be able to honour some of them.

We were able to celebrate the fantastic loyalty of 96 of our helpers by presenting them with awards at our two Volunteer Long Service Awards.

The celebrations saw staff honoured for completing anywhere between 5 to 35 years of volunteering across our five hospitals, with our volunteers clocking up a combined 1,170 years of service in total.

Christine Luxford also celebrated reaching 30 years at Samuel Johnson Community Hospital, with Christine deciding to continue helping patients through her work with the Friends of Samuel Johnson Committee, following a career working at the Victoria Hospital, in Lichfield, for 12 years.

Around 600 Trust volunteers currently work across Queen’s Hospital Burton, Royal Derby Hospital and Samuel Johnson, London Road and Sir Robert Peel Community Hospitals, offering vital support to patients and staff alike.

UHDB was shortlisted for Nursing Associate Training Programme Provider of the Year for the work that has been put into bridging the gap between theory and practice, while the others were for Student Placement of the Year: Hospital and Student Experience for the Practice Learning Support Unit (PLSU).

Premature babies to benefit from UHDB-led national trial Neonatal clinicians from UHDB are leading a national trial investigating the best way to feed premature babies.

“We also want to gather more robust evidence about the risk of infection and gut problems in babies who have earlier milk feeding. Simultaneously, we will find out more about parents’ feelings about how their baby is fed and the impact of premature birth on breast-feeding.”

The FEED1 trial will involve around 40 hospitals across the UK and will test the benefits of introducing milk at the earliest opportunity to babies born between 10 and 7 weeks prematurely.

Around 2,000 babies born between 30 and 33 weeks and their families will take part in the clinical study over the next four years, including at the neonatal units at both the Royal Derby Hospital and Queen’s Hospital Burton.

The £1.6 million NIHR-funded study is being led by neonatal experts from UHDB and the University of Nottingham and will instead investigate the benefits of introducing milk early, as opposed to the current practice of feeding premature babies small amounts of milk intravenously and slowly increasing.

them fluids through a drip can reduce infections and help them go home sooner. We also aim to help mothers to start expressing breast milk as soon as possible after the birth. We will give this milk to the baby first and then give extra milk if needed.

Most premature babies are currently fed intravenously and when stable are only given small amounts of milk through a feeding tube into their stomach, with the milk then being slowly increased until they are fully milk fed.

Babies included in the research will either receive normal feeding intravenously from birth and gradual introduction of milk feeds at a later stage, or receive milk feeds via a feeding tube from birth.

The amount of milk given will be increased over a few days and the babies in this group will get all of their fluids as milk, unless they are struggling with this and showing signs of sickness.

‘Life-saving’ scanner donated The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Derby Hospital received a new heart scanner worth £73,000 thanks to the wonderful generosity of the charity Friends of the Baby Unit (FOBU).

The new Echocardiology Heart Scanner will be used to identify and stabilise babies who are born with congenital heart defects – which are problems or anomalies in the structure of the heart. These are often detected soon after birth in new born and premature babies.

Thanks to the donation by FOBU, the capacity of the paediatric cardiology service at the Royal Derby has now been increased. The service already sees around 1,600 patients each year in the outpatients department, with around 600 of these being new referrals for the assessment of heart disease.

What’s more, the charity managed to raise the £73,000 to purchase the scanner in just four months of fundraising.

quickly the money came in during these months. Donating this equipment to the hospital will see more and more babies get the best care and the best start to life they possibly can.”

It’s a lifesaving piece of equipment as it helps us to get better quality images of the heart, enabling us to get patients the best possible care in a timely fashion.”

Making UHDB the best workplace it can be for our doctors We were delighted to receive a commendation from the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) for making UHDB a great place to train for our medical registrars and junior doctors.

The Trust has established a number of different projects across the Royal Derby Hospital over the last two years that have further enhanced both staff training and morale.

From redesigning rotas so that doctors are able to work in the same areas for longer, to pairing up registrars with core medical trainees as mentors, the Trust has introduced a number of key measures to keep frontline staff’s spirits high.

This has led to a reduction in staff sickness, improved patient care and increased morale, with 100% of registrars that took part in a recent staff survey revealing they enjoyed working at the

Redesigning the staff rotas has allowed the Trust to deploy doctors in the same areas for a longer period of time to build stronger relationships with colleagues and their patients.

This has also been applied during night shifts, with an additional doctor of a higher tier being made available overnight to before, meaning patients can be seen sooner and there’s also less pressure on clinical staff.

NHS staff survey results show staff would recommend UHDB UHDB staff would recommend our hospitals to their loved ones and think the Trust is a great place to work, according to the latest NHS national staff survey.

The Trust’s score was found to be above the national average in a number of different categories, including staff engagement and opportunities for career progression.

According to the findings, 79% of our staff would be happy to recommend our hospitals to a friend or relative if they need treatment.

The Trust’s scores are also above the national average for several other important measures of staff experience,

including morale, and for providing a safe culture and environment for staff.

Dr Neil Pease, Executive Director of Workforce & Organisational Development, said: “These results are pleasing, bearing in mind that our staff were completing the survey only a few months after the new Trust came into being, following the merger of two hospital trusts. I’d like to thank our staff for their continued dedication to meeting the needs of our patients.”

Over 4,500 UHDB staff took part in the national survey, one of the largest of its kind, giving their views about their experiences of working in the NHS.

Summer Fair Sir Robert Peel Hospital Our League of Friends at Sir Robert Peel held a funfilled Summer Fair. They had over 40 stalls for staff and public to enjoy, including representations from local charities and organisations.

At the Summer Fair, the Tamworth League of Friends kindly presented a cheque to our Trust of £8,000 . This £8,000 cheque completes the pledge of £20,000 which Tamworth League of Friends made last year to our hospitals.

The £20,000 will fund a brand new Consultation Room and Unisex Toilet Unit in the newly refurbished Colonoscopy/ Endoscopy, Surgical Unit at Sir Robert Peel Hospital.

New Healing Garden opens

UHDB duo are appointed onto new NHS Assembly We are extremely proud to have seen two of our staff selected to appear on a national panel tasked with helping shape the future of the NHS. The NHS Assembly has been set up to advise, challenge and support the delivery of the NHS Long-Term Plan – which has mapped out the key changes needed to improve the health service over the next 10 years.

As part of Dying Matters Week, we opened a brand new Healing Garden at the Royal Derby Hospital.

The garden, located outside the Coronary Care Unit, provides a peaceful area for staff and patients to remember loved ones who have sadly passed away at one of our hospitals.

There are willow weaved birds which were created by Emma Parkins, who also created the badger set in the main hospital courtyard, and plenty of lovely flowers creating a serene space for reflection.

Our Air Arts Team worked hard behind the scenes to secure £14,000 of funding to help make the garden a reality.

Staff and patients will be invited to attend planting ceremonies, which will take place every four months, with the first one due to take place in September 2019. This will ensure the garden always remains in bloom throughout the year.

Our CEO, Gavin Boyle, opened the garden and had the honour of planting the first plant, joined by Sister Elizabeth Mason from Ward 204, whose Nana and Father-in-law were both cared for at the Royal Derby Hospital before they died.

Elizabeth said: “It’s a really lovely idea and it will bring a lot of colour and joy to the area.

“It will be nice for members of the public to use and to know that we as a Trust do not forget about our patients and that they’re always in our thoughts.”

If you would like to attend the next planting ceremony, it will take place on Saturday 28 September, 12pm-1pm.

Improving the hospital journey for patients with learning disabilities Specialist nurses based across UHDB are playing a vital role helping ensure that our patients with learning disabilities receive the best care for them.

Learning Disability Liaison Nurses work closely with the families of patients to identify any changes that can be made to improve their loved one’s time in hospital.

These adjustments can include arranging for family members to stay overnight, identifying quieter waiting areas ahead of appointments, and ensuring inpatients are able to wear their own pyjamas.

The specialist nurses don’t provide clinical care but instead act in a supporting capacity by building relationships with patients to ensure any specific requirements they might have are put in place before they attend hospital.

Attending hospital can be very confusing for patients with a learning disability, so our role is all about providing that reassurance and making them feel as comfortable as possible.”

He said: “I have a real passion for ensuring patients with a learning disability receive the best care possible. This role allows us to build relationships with the patient and become a friendly face, so that we can get to know what they like and don’t like and make any changes accordingly.”

13 Not all patients are suitable for this treatment, and a CT scan is required to determine whether the blood flow to the prostate is adequate. This treatment is also not used for the treatment of patients with prostate cancer.

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic and carried out as a daycase. A small incision of around 1cm is made in the patient’s groin to allow a catheter to be inserted into the groin artery, before being guided through the blood vessels until it reaches those supplying the prostate.

Then, tiny plastic particles are injected, cutting off the blood supply to the prostate which causes it is to shrink gradually over 10-12 weeks, easing symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate for patients.

UHDB is leading the way for benign prostate treatment UHDB is proud to be one of the leading providers in the Midlands of a new, innovative non-surgical method for the treatment of benign prostatic enlargement.

Prostate artery embolisation was made available at the Trust in April 2019 and offers a minimally invasive treatment option which has fewer side effects than surgical options.

Dr Waleed Al-Obaydi, Interventional Radiologist, said: “It’s fantastic news to be able to offer this treatment to patients”.

“Patients are admitted in the morning before having local anaesthetic for the procedure, which usually take about two hours. Then, patients are sent to a daycase ward to recover for a few hours before being sent home on the same day.

“There are so many benefits to the patient with this treatment.

The recovery time after the procedure is minimal and there should be no impact on the patient’s sexual function, which can happen as a result of having surgery. It is also a more proven method in terms of its effectiveness, as opposed to treating it with medication, which may or may not work for some patients.”

Benign prostatic enlargement affects more than one third of men over 50 and 80 per cent of men over 70. Although it is not life-threatening, an enlarged prostate can press and affect the ability to pass urine and may cause men to need to take frequent trips to the toilet.

Patient raises money to thank team who saved his life A former Royal Derby Hospital patient who faced the prospect of never being able to walk again has run a half marathon to thank those that helped him get back on his feet again.

Dean Salt initially thought he had a cold when he was rushed to hospital in February 2016 but was instead faced with the devastating news that he had Guillain-Barre syndrome and could soon lose the ability to walk.

He spent a total of three months recovering at the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), with his darkest moment seeing him question whether he’d make it, as the debilitating condition left him unable to speak or move from the neck down.

Amazingly, Dean managed to overcome the odds thanks to the fantastic care provided

by staff in the unit. After an additional six weeks of intensive rehab at London Road Community Hospital, Dean was able to get back on his feet and make a full recovery.

Dean said: “At one stage I thought I was going to die, but luckily all of the fantastic staff were there to save me and tell me not to give up and put everything I had into getting better.

“I really cannot thank the wonderful staff at the Royal Derby Hospital enough for what they have done for me and my family.”

Now that he’s back to full health, Dean decided to fulfil a promise he made from his hospital bed to thank those that helped save his life, by tackling the Manchester Half

Marathon to raise money for the Derby & Burton Hospitals Charity.

Dean added: “When I was in hospital, my friends came to visit me every day and I always said that, if I ever got out of this, I’d do something to say thank you to the NHS. I thought, what better way to celebrate being healthy again than by challenging myself to run a half marathon. I received the best care you could wish for and it is thanks to all their hard work that I am here to take on this challenge.”

I’m extremely proud to be able to represent my colleagues and to be that link between our staff on the shop floor at Queen’s Hospital Burton and the Executive Team.

“Working as a Staff Governor gives you another perspective on what’s going on across our Trust. Our biggest priority is providing quality patient care but there are so many different ways that we can influence that; whether that’s through new equipment on the wards or providing extra car parking spaces at our hospitals. There are so many things that go into running a hospital and being a Staff Governor allows you to see some of that.

Rob Bradley is a Charge Nurse on Sunflower Ward at Derbyshire Children’s Hospital and has been a Royal Derby Hospital Staff Governor since 2016. Rob has told us what it means to him to be able to represent his colleagues and why other UHDB staff should consider putting their names forward.

He said: “I am extremely passionate about patient safety and doing everything in my power to enhance patients’ treatment journey by providing them with a positive hospital experience. By being a Staff Governor, I am able to have this impact, by passing on the opinions of my colleagues on how we can continue to improve our service.

“After going through an election and being voted in, people know you as a Staff Governor and come to you with any issues that they may have. We then signpost colleagues to the right people to provide assistance and then bring any issues up at board level. Being able to represent other staff members is fantastic and the Executive Team really do listen to staff’s feedback.
