Welcome to the 2021 BSHG Beer Festival In 2021 our Beer Festival makes a welcome return to the calendar following a year off in 2020 due to the pandemic. This is now the 6th festival we have held, and each year it just gets better.

As we did in 2019, we are picking our ales locally. That is to source 20 different beers, all from local breweries, within an approximate 30 mile radius of the Burton Parish, while also selecting a greater variety of beers to suit everyone's taste.

As in previous events we are also including a range of delicious ciders for those with a sweeter tooth. From classic traditional apple ciders to more exotic and fruity flavours.

And don't worry if your friends or family members won't drink any of this stuff or are driving or too young to drink at all, there is always the pub to fall back on for soft drinks, wine and the usual beverages. As we have seen in the past, this is a family friendly event where all are welcome to enjoy the beer garden and atmosphere.

Burton upon Stather Heritage Group are a voluntary community group initially concerned with uncovering the rich heritage of this riverside parish. From revealing the secrets of the WWII amphibious vehicle testing site on the Trent, to the past industries of the Stather such as the brickworks and the nineteenth century shipyard, much of which is documented on our website.

In time we branched out into organising events which would both raise funds and bring the community together for days they will remember. Events have included Family Fun Days, Raft Races, Carol Services, Armistice Day Services, Historical Lectures, Regular Pub Quizzes and of course the Beer Festival. In addition we attend and support other events in the region including 7 Lakes Rescue Day, Winterton Show, Winterton Steam Rally, Crowle 1940s Weekend and Burton in Bloom.

Funds we raise are invested back into the community through our own projects, such as the War Memorial, as well as being shared with numerous charities and good causes both locally and nationally. These have included:St Andrews Church Tower (repairs), Thealby Play Area, Burton Play Group (repairs from fire damage), Help for Heroes (Raft Race 2011), The Poppy Appeal, Macmillan Cancer Support (Raft Race 2015), Burton Firework Display, Burton United FC (children’s team), Burton War Memorial (new iron benches), The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, Rescue Day charities (½ our profits from boat rides), Lindsey Lodge Hospice (in memory of former member Steve Earnshaw) and the new Flixborough Nypro Memorial.

How This Works

Experience has shown us that newcomers to the festival often don't understand the system we use, coming straight to bar the with cash and no glass, expecting a pint, like you may in a normal pub. But because the festival can get very busy we employ a different system to maintain a fast turnover during busy times.

Before The Bar Before proceeding to the bar visit the desk at the entrance where you can purchase half pint beer tokens and collect your glass.

The half pint tokens are priced at £1.80 each. Please consider how many tokens you want to buy as unspent tokens cannot be reimbursed. This is particularly important to consider on the Sunday when stock is likely to be running low or if drinking cider which generally runs out fast. Once you have beer tokens and a glass, you can then proceed to the bar and choose a drink.

Choosing a Drink This guide lists the drinks we ordered for the festival, but be aware that the drinks listed in this guide were correct at the time of going to print, we cannot account for unforeseen changes such as a let-down in supply. Also it is not practical or financially viable to have an inexhaustible supply of every beer. Beer does eventually run out, some faster than others, so it's possible the one you are looking for isn't available. If in doubt, look what's on the bar, we usually remove the pump badge when a beer goes off. If you see it, we probably have it. If you don't see it, we probably don't have it!

As a guide finding your choice on the bar we will attempt to put the pumps in the same alphabetical order, left to right, as printed here to make them easier to locate.

Getting Served Once you know what you want, ask one of our bar staff and hand them your glass.

Note that we only server half pints at our festival. The reason for this is efficiency, some cask ales can be very lively and can take some time to pull and settle. When busy it simply isn't practical to spend that much time pulling one drink, while pulling a half into a pint glass leaves ample space without having to wait.

This isn't a bad thing for you as our halves tend to be on the generous side, meaning you get more beer at better value and faster.

Please don't ask our staff to pull you a full pint, it holds everyone up and you will get less value in the long run, you can always come back for seconds.

Pay for a half with a token. Again the reason for using tokens is for efficiency. The volunteer bar staff don't have to worry about dealing with cash, tills and change, so they can focus their attention on pulling your ale to perfection!

Fancy Another One? When returning to the bar for another drink, we kindly ask that you hold onto the same glass you were given at the start for as long as possible.* The festival can get extremely busy with hundreds of drinks sold, there simply aren't enough beer glasses on the Stather for everyone to have a new glass for every drink and glass collectors/washers are not able to keep up with demand. *Offenders may be rewarded with a plastic one, you have been warned!

Colour Strength

49 Squadron Best Bitter is a pale amber Amber bitter. It is a bittersweet well balanced tasting beer of malt, fruit and citrus hop 3.8% flavours.

Atomic Blonde With Pilsner and Munich malts, the Goldings Blonde hops lend a British bitterness while finished Don Valley with Cascade to deliver a floral and citrusy 4.3% aroma and that important punk undertone.

Bomber County Bomber County is a deep red premium bitter Deep Red with a perfect balance of earthy hops, fruity Lincolnshire malt tones and citrus notes which emerge in 4.8% Craft the mouth with a subtle roasted bitterness.

A traditional Bitter. This beer has sweet malt Pale Butturley and honey on the palate, followed by a Ossett Copper moderately bitter finish. The delicate hop 3.8% aromas can be described as floral and spicy.

Fido Best Bitter is a pale amber bitter. It is a Pale Fido well balanced tasting beer with a fruity hint Amber Ferry Ales and a background of citrus hops.

A golden coloured IPA lending undertones Golden of sweet caramel. Mosaic hops with tropical citrusy aromas deliver the American punch 5% finishing this Anglo-American collaboration.

If visiting the festival by car, be sure to have a designated driver and please park responsibly. The pub has limited parking spaces for an event of this size which on the day will be limited to staff access and disabled parking.

Street parking is also limited with many Stather residents not having off-road parking. Brookside Caravan Park have kindly allowed us to use their land for festival parking. Please show consideration for local residents and use the parking area provided.

We do not accept cash at the bar. Please buy tokens first.

Unspent tokens cannot be reimbursed. Buy a realistic number.

We do not have glasses at the bar. Please collect your glass from the reception.

We only serve half pints. Please don't ask our staff to pull you a full pint.

We only have so many glasses. Please reuse the same glass for as long as you can.

Our beer supply is not infinite. It's possible the beer you want may have run out.

Our bar staff are all volunteers. These people have given up their free time, unpaid to serve you and make the event a success.
