Under the baton of Eric Klay, this stunning program of classical music will include Thievish Magpie Overture by Rossini, Piano Concerto No.1 by Beethoven featuring soloist – Elyane Laussade, followed by a one-off collaboration between local favourite Tracey Roberts and the Nicholas Chamber Orchestra. Tracey will be singing a collection of jazz standards as well as one of her own original compositions.

Australian Octet is Melbourne Chamber Orchestra’s new flagship chamber ensemble. Unique in Australia’s musical life, the Australian Octet is dedicated to performing music for five to eight strings. For Australian Octet’s début season, we present three very different monuments of the chamber repertoire and the first new Australian string octet in 20 years, by Batavia composer Richard Mills.

For nearly 100 years this iconic 50 piece orchestra has become renowned for an ever-changing program that ranges from the classics – Bach, Mozart and Tchaikovsky through Operetta, Musical Theatre – from Gilbert & Sullivan to Andrew Lloyd Webber – and contemporary composers such as John Williams (Star Wars) and Peter Allen. This new collaboration between two celebrated artists from different worlds has immediately established itself as a formidable force in Australian chamber music. Zoe Black has long been thought of as a violinist’s violinist, and pianist/composer Joe Chindamo’s unique musical gifts place him in a class of his own. The repertoire is an eclectic mix of radical reinventions of works by the masters, original compositions by Chindamo plus a few unlikely surprises. The programme will include works by Puccini, Chopin, Gershwin and Dolly Parton – all reimagined by the duo. Together, Joe and Zoe are creating an entirely new genre of Australian music, combining lyricism, urbane rhythms, a modern romanticism, making this music thrilling, passionate, daring and alive.

Flinders Quartet is instantly recognisable as one as Australia’s most loved chamber music ensembles. A quartet for the twenty-first century, their dynamic and stirring performances of a full spectrum of repertoire have audiences and critics articulating their esteem, and the quartet is now a highly respected force in Australian chamber music. Flinders regularly commissions and premieres works by Australian composers. In 2013, the quartet premiered Joyce’s Mob, a new string quartet by Elena Kats-Chernin, and new works by Paul Dean and Paul Grabowsky are slated for 2014. The Trio combines the versatile and unique talents of three young Australian musicians: violinist Holly Piccoli, cellist Chris Howlett and pianist Rhodri Clarke. The Australian Boys Choir is a not-for-profit organisation recognised internationally for its high musical standards. Its performance program is supported by a world-class education program designed to help boys and young men achieve their potential, both musical and personal. The Classical Tracks program will highlight the Choir’s favourite pieces from its 75 year history. The Choir has worked under acclaimed international conductors, including Zubin Mehta, Jorge Mester, Hiroyuki Iwaki, Noam Sheriff, John Hopkins, Richard Divall and Sir Bernard Heinze. Performances have also been given with the Israel Philharmonic and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras.
