Generation WOW From the outside, the next generation Audi Q7 looks like a close relation to its predecessor. Behind the wheel, it’s a hiding a few surprises.

Building a car that’s functional enough for the school drop off, comfortable during long drives and doesn’t resemble a mini bus isn’t easy, but it’s something Audi have been working hard to achieve. Australia was first introduced to the Q7, a luxury car that included seven usable seats and all the bells and whistles you would expect to find in a high end SUV, in 2006. The next generation has just arrived on our shores.

Among the most important distinctions between the two models is the weight; the 2015 version comes in at 240 kilograms lighter and consequently, its fuel consumption is 20 per cent lower. “The all new Q7 is significantly lighter, which brings both efficiency and dynamic benefits,” says managing director of Audi Australia, Andrew Doyle. “It incorporates the very latest technology, like the innovative virtual cockpit. But most importantly, it introduces key assistance systems that will reduce the driver’s task on the long crosscountry drives that the Q7 is well suited to.”

Driver assist technology is what really sets this car apart. Together with adaptive cruise

control, traffic jam assist can automatically accelerate, brake and steer under certain conditions, while an active lane assist function guides the car in its own lane when travelling above 60 km/h. Impressed yet?

There’s more. Using a video camera and radar system, a collision avoidance system can sense impending danger, delivering a warning jolt to the driver and helping to guide the car around obstacles. It will help out with tricky right hand turns as well, with an intervention system that keeps the Q7 in its lane when travelling between two and 10km/h while monitoring oncoming traffic.

Similar systems assist when reversing into traffic and opening doors into the path of oncoming cars or bikes.

Under the hood is a 200kW V6 capable of reaching 100km/h in around 6.5 seconds, and the interior finishes are to the standard expected of an Audi. Several of the functions mentioned come standard with the Q7, or drivers can opt for the optional assistance package for the full range.

What are your tips for getting through a long day at the races?

I think it’s really important to plan ahead.

Think about the weather especially; if it’s going to be cool bring a light coat, wear appropriate tights and if it’s warm pack a travel-size perfume or deodorant. Wear fabrics suited to the weather forecast, there’s nothing worse than having to sit out because you feel uncomfortable.

Also, if you are going to have a few glasses of sparkling wine, it’s important to drink plenty of water too – it’s a long day and you’ll want to feel fresh for photos!

What do you take in your clutch to freshen up?

Blotting paper or pressed powder is a good idea for touch ups throughout the day and even if your hair is down, always pack a few bobby pins! You just never know when you might need them…

Hat, flowers or fascinator?

I favour a fascinator, I think there are plenty of adventurous, modern styles available.

Television presenter Amelia Mulcahy brings us the weather, reports on environmental issues and is an occasional presenter on SALife TV on Channel Seven, but she’s also Ambassador for the current Fashion at The Races competition. Amelia shares her tips for race day.

However, I’ve also worn an arrangement of flowers around a slick pony, and I think wide brim hats are appropriate on those hot, sunny race meets What are you enjoying about being FATR Ambassador and what do you think of this season’s entrants so far?

I love traveling to the regional Cups. It’s been so wonderful to meet the people behind the race days, and they’ve definitely given me a few tips when it comes to racing! I’ve been really impressed with some of this year’s entrants and their interpretation of seasonal trends. Over winter, I saw perfect seasonal race wear that was conservative, the girls looked comfortable and they embraced jewel tones, in particular marsala, the Pantone Colour of the Year. Now that it’s warming up, I really want to see crisp whites and bright colours. I’ve already seen a few entrants wearing a punch of colour in their outfit and it really makes a difference.

Whose racing fashion tips do you follow?

Given her racing heritage, I think Kate Waterhouse always looks immaculate at the races, so does Channel Seven’s Francesca Cumani. I look to Jennifer Hawkins and Nadia Bartel for fashion-forward race wear inspiration.

What are your favourite haunts at Burnside Village?

Mecca Cosmetica is one of my favourite places to visit at BV! There’s always a new invention that’s worth trying for a race day, I’m hooked on the Hourglass Primer and Foundation, they’re guaranteed to stay put through any race day.

Oroton clutches and small bags are timeless, and I’ll visit Mimco for earrings and bracelets. Nine West is my go-to for classic pumps and I also check out their dress wedges, which are often the best choice for trudging through racecourse grass.

DO YOU MEET THE CRITERIA? THINKING OF ENTERING THIS YEAR’S COMPETITION? YOU’LL NEED TO KNOW WHAT THE JUDGES WILL BE LOOKING FOR.

Entrants should dress with the weather in mind. For example, if it’s a Winter Cup, dress in appropriate clothing, not a summer dress. And remember you’re not going to a nightclub. Don’t forget you may be walking on a dirt track and grass surrounds so choose suitable shoes. Appropriate headwear for women is essential, as is a men’s

tie or neckwear. The judges will be looking at your total outfit including bag, shoes, jewellery and headwear which should all be complementary.

Entrants must show that they’re aware of current trends without losing their personal flair. The judges will be looking for entrants dressing with originality and confidence, so choose and outfit that makes you

stand out in a positive manner.

Finally, consider grooming and deportment as entrants will also be judged on the way they carry themselves on stage.

It produces high crop yields while simultaneously looking after the soil and its fertility, caring for the environment and our natural resources. “Biodynamic farming is a holistic system of agriculture that was conceptualised by Rudolf Steiner,” explains Jurlique International horticultural specialist Marc Intervera. “It views the farm as a living individual within the living earth and universe. Biodynamic farming is unique in that we use homeopathic preparations, which make a connection between the earth, the atmosphere and the cosmos. Preparations are made from common plants and materials with each undergoing a unique fermentation process before use.”

There are 32 species cultivated on the farm including chamomile, calendula, rose, rosemary, echinacea, marshmallow and spilanthes. These are harvested at the optimal time and air-dried. A two-in-six-year crop rotation allows the soil to rejuvenate in between planting crops of the same plant family. Legumes and cereals are planted as cover crops every year to increase organic matter in the soil. “By growing herbs biodynamically you capture the life force of the

MICHELLE TONKIN Growing up I had a strong pull toward the fashion industry and was constantly asked by friends and family to help put together outfits and to source specific items – the gratification was priceless.

Day to day my personal style is reflected by my mood and what I’m feeling. In summer I am drawn to a real boho luxe kind of vibe and in winter I veer towards sharp tailoring and strong silhouettes.

I’m a real accessories girl; they instantly update and give personality to your look. I love a hat! But staples would definitely be anything denim related, such as denim jacket, black jeans and a white T-shirt.

Fashion is supposed to be fun so stop doubting yourself. If you love a particular item then go for it.

Remember that at the end of the day you are dressing for yourself, wear what makes you happy – wear it with confidence and you will completely own it.

JULIE ZANES My style is inspired by my mood and my day. Each day I always think about the impression I wish to leave. Feeling confident is also very important. For me this means expressing who I am in any given moment and working with the body I have.

I have 25 pairs of jeans and love to dress them up or dress them down – it’s all in the shoes! A black or navy tailored jacket is a wardrobe essential and a cool look with any outfit, from casual after-work drinks to a special occasion. Of course, it must be a quality piece and well-cut for your body shape.

My black lace-up boots are worn with everything from shorts to jeans to dresses, in winter and summer. And a fedora hat is a great look when I want a bit of an edge. Rain or shine I’ll be wearing sunglasses – the style depends on my look for the day.

As a child I would select outfits for my mother, sisters and friends.

My reputation as a personal stylist followed me into adulthood. I studied to become a personal stylist in Melbourne and Adelaide, which brought my dream of becoming a stylist into my reality.

I study the mags and love street style. This gives me a reference point in forecasting upcoming trends. I observe high-end fashion files and create these looks for my clients, bringing that high-end, polished look into my clients’ wardrobe with their budget in mind.

There are at least 10 essentials every wardrobe requires – among them are a nude heel which elongates the leg, a beautifully fitted black blazer, and every woman should own a LBD. Always dress with your body shape in mind. That bit of advice allows you to make the right choices and actually saves you time, money and heartache. My final piece of advice, which is somewhat contradictory, is to throw the rules out the window. If something suits you ... buy it! I interpret that as your

As much as we all like to be up to date with current fashion trends, a tour of the Art Gallery of South Australia reveals the important role fashion plays in capturing our social history.

W

hat could an Elizabethan lady and a couple of girlfriends going to a disco in the mid-1970s possibly have in common? Apart from both being represented in artworks from the collection at the Art Gallery South Australia, the works tell us much about the society of the day. With the assistance of the curators at the AGSA we can undress history to reveal a wealth of information – all based on what we wore.

The sitter of Portrait of a lady is shown wearing a large closed white linen ruff, set in deep pleats. Her black gown seems to be of cut velvet lined with white satin, which is cut in a decorative pattern and enriched with gold spangles sewn between the cuts. The jags on the sleeves are held down with gold buttons, each set with cinques of peals. These are enriched with bracelets set with pearls and rubies. Around her neck are six enamelled gold chains. Judging from the sumptuousness of her clothing and the wealth of her jewellery, she was of high rank, and probably a lady of the court.

Centuries later, two flatmates photographed on their way to a disco at the Old Lion Hotel, North Adelaide, in 1975, came forward when the image was exhibited and revealed that each Saturday, dressed in evening gowns, they caught the bus to go to dancing. How times have changed.

Photographs capture a moment in time. Rennie Ellis took many thousands of photographs, which exist today as both a personal diary and social record of Australian culture throughout the 1960s to the 1990s.

Sometimes the photographer was an anonymous observer, while some

subjects, such as the Cosmetics’ salesgirl with the fabulous hair, were complicit in the images he created.

Artist Charles Meere is best remembered for his iconic painting of a group of men, women and children spending a day at the beach in Australian beach pattern. This work is in fact a manufactured exercise in compositional design executed in the artist’s studio, where at times he used his assistants as models. The subjects are captured mid-movement, wearing the latest beach fashions. Men are depicted in belted woollen Speedo brand trunks that were only recently legalised and two women in the foreground wear two-piece bathing suits, daringly baring their midriffs and prefiguring the post-war bikini. The women also wear rubber bathing caps, possibly preserving their perms What we wear helps us disguise ourselves and create an impression or mood. Hilda Rix Nicholas had a passion for collecting clothes and fabrics and often used costume to enhance the character and identity of her sitters. She painted The pink scarf in Paris in 1913 but the off-the-shoulder dress and hairstyle, of coils framing the ear, are both reminiscent of fashions from the 1840s. The artist’s fascination with collecting costumes and dressing up allowed her to explore and create different identities for herself and traverse outside the humdrum of everyday. Surely that’s what fashion is all about?

here’s something inspiring about someone who has found the secret to happiness – especially when she’s willing to share it! Lola Berry was raised in a health-conscious family, but a party lifestyle in her late teens saw her diet go downhill. “When I went to school, mum used to send me there with home-made spirulina balls,” she says. “But I’ve definitely had times in my life when I’ve been unhealthy – I used to be a DJ in Melbourne and be out five nights a week, and my favourite snacks were lamingtons and giant caramel koalas!”

A summertime detox (in order to look good in a bikini) saw Lola feel better in many ways – glowing skin, more energy – and inspired her to swap her arts degree for nutritional medicine. She began making short web episodes on eating well, and her approachable and enthusiastic style led to morning television guest spots. She released The 20/20 Diet and The 20/20 Diet Cookbook, based on her experience losing 20 kilograms.

Lola now runs a nutrition clinic in Melbourne, continues her blog and her online following – including Instagram – continues to grow.

Lola told The Vine that she’s excited about the release of her new book, The Happy Cookbook. “It’s about real food and it’s about

the importance of being happy,” she says.

“When you’re not happy it’s much harder to make healthy choices. So apart from recipes, this book looks at a lot of elements that affect both your health and happiness.” Lola believes making an effort to live well is worth it. “We want to live life to the fullest and in order to achieve that, being healthy is key. You want to be the best you, and health plays an important role.” Inspired by people who are living their truth, Lola simply aims to be herself – “No tricks at all, just be real” – and genuinely believes in her message. “I’m sharing my passion and heart,” she says. “And the thought of inspiring a single person is pretty magic to me.”

Lola is looking forward to being in Adelaide as ambassador for the new Nourish Festival on Saturday, October 17, at Rundle Park. The yoga and fitness festival will also feature nutrition talks, cooking demonstrations and a healthy food market. “It’s going to be so much fun; I can’t wait for some yoges, hearing people talk and brilliant food,” Lola says. “The countdown is on!”

Where do you start when deciding on your next destination?

If I decide to travel to a lesser known destination, I look at the DFAT website to check their recommendation, as this will affect the cost of travel insurance. Then I search online for more information about the country and source brochures from a travel agency. If the country has a local national tourism office, this is a very useful place to gather more information.

What is your favourite destination that you have visited so far? Why? From the 40 countries I have visited, Italy is still my favourite because of the variety of interests you can satisfy there: history (from the Roman period to the Renaissance), monuments, cities and sites (Venice, Siena, Pompei), costal drives (Cinque Terre, Amalfi and Positano), mountains (The Dolomites), beaches, plus food and wines of course!

Where do you hope to travel next?

It’s not finalised yet, but either California or Vietnam.

What is your favourite part of the travel experience?

I have two favourites: the planning of the trip and when the door of the aircraft closes ready for take off!

What do you always take with you?

A tablet (for WiFi access anywhere) and a multi-country travel adaptor.

And your number one travel tip?

BURRATA WITH BROAD BEANS, PEAS, ASPARAGUS, SPECK AND BLACK PEPPER Serves 4, as starter 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil, plus extra

to serve 1 small brown onion, finely diced 100g speck (or guanciale, or pancetta), finely diced ¼ cup shelled broad beans ¼ cup fresh shelled peas ½ bunch asparagus, peeled into ribbons Sea salt flakes Freshly ground black pepper 1 large burrata ¼ bunch fresh basil Crusty bread, to serve

Heat olive oil in a large frypan on high, add onion and speck and fry for about a minute, to gain a little colour. Add broad beans and continue to cook until onions and broad beans have softened.

Add peas and asparagus, season with salt and pepper and cook for a few minutes, until peas are just cooked through.

To serve, place the broad bean mixture in the bottom of a bowl, top with the burrata, scatter with fresh basil, drizzle with olive oil and crack a heap of black pepper on top.

Enjoy with some crusty bread.

Juice and zest of 6 lemons Juice and zest of 6 limes 1 bunch fennel fronds 2 tbsp toasted fennel seeds Creme fraiche, to serve

Pat dry the salmon fillet, to remove any moisture.

To make the curing mix, in a bowl combine the salt, sugar, zest and juices, fennel fronds and seeds. Mix to combine.

On a flat benchtop, lay down some cling wrap and evenly spread with half of the curing mix. Place salmon on top of the mix and pour remaining mix over the top. Flatten to ensure an even coverage. Place in fridge and leave to cure for 2 to 3 hours (for a stronger cure, leave in fridge overnight).

Once cured, remove the curing mix with a wet kitchen cloth and thinly slice the salmon.

Serve with creme fraiche and the apple, fennel and kohlrabi salad (see separate recipe).

Using a knife or mandolin, thinly slice the kohlrabi. Cut the slices into strips; place in a bowl of iced water with the lemon halves (after they have been juiced). Core and thinly slice apples so they have a half-moon

shape, and thinly slice fennel in large pieces; add both to iced lemon water.

Heat a small frypan and add butter; let it melt and bubble away until it turns a light golden colour. Remove from heat.

Remove the apple, fennel and kohlrabi from iced water and toss with butter and lemon juice (to taste), and season with salt and pepper.

STUFFED ROASTED ARTICHOKES Serves 6 6 globe artichokes Juice of 1-2 lemons, for acidulated water 1 cup fresh breadcrumbs ½ cup grated parmigiano reggiano 1 bunch flat leaf Italian parsley,

finely chopped 1 garlic clove, finely chopped ½ long red chilli, finely chopped Sea salt flakes cup extra virgin olive oil

Cut the tops off the artichokes so you can see all the layers of the heart (choke). Lightly tap each artichoke on a work bench so that the leaves open up. Place in a bowl of acidulated (lemon) water to prevent them from going black.

Mix breadcrumbs, cheese, parsley, garlic and chilli, and season to taste. Remove artichokes from water and stuff with breadcrumb filling, ensuring you get into all the gaps.

Place artichokes in a flat saucepan, drizzle with oil and add water until it is 2-3cm deep in the pan. Cover with lid and simmer for about 30 minutes, until the leaves are tender and pull away from the heart.

ANCIENT GRAIN SALAD WITH FRESH BRUSSELS SPROUTS Serves 6 ½ cup pearl barley ½ cup cous cous 1 brown onion, finely diced 1 garlic clove, finely diced 1 tsp ground fennel 1 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp smoked paprika ¼ tsp chilli powder ½ cup dried currants 1 tin cooked lentils ¼ cup toasted pine nuts ¼ cup toasted slivered almonds ¼ cup pistachios, chopped ½ bunch flat leaf parsley, finely chopped ½ bunch coriander, finely chopped 250g Brussels sprouts, halved and finely

sliced on a mandolin 1 pomegranate, seeds removed Juice of 2 lemons Extra virgin olive oil Sea salt flakes Pepper

Cook pearl barley in boiling water for about 40 minutes, or until tender. Set aside.

To cook cous cous, combine with ½ cup boiling water and cover for 5-8 minutes – fluff with a fork and set aside.

In a large frypan, heat a few tablespoons of oil; add onion and garlic. Fry for a few minutes, until they become translucent. Add spices and currants and continue to cook until currants pop and onion turns a golden colour.

To assemble, place pearl barley, cous cous and spice mixture into a large bowl, add lentils and toss to combine. Add the nuts, herbs, Brussels sprouts and pomegranate; dress with lemon juice and olive oil; season to taste. Toss and serve in a large bowl.

FENNEL AND ORANGEROASTED SPRING BABY CARROTS Serves 6 1 bunch spring baby carrots, washed

and trimmed (keep tips intact) cup olive oil Juice and zest of 1 orange 1 tbsp honey 2 tbsp fennel seeds, toasted Sea salt and pepper

Pre-heat oven to 180C fan-forced.

Peel heirloom carrots and cut lengthways in half and then quarters; place into a mixing bowl. Add olive oil, orange juice and zest, honey and fennel seeds, and season. Toss together.

Place onto a lined baking tray and cook for 30 minutes, until carrots are tender. Serve in a large bowl.

LINGUINE WITH GOOLWA COCKLES (LINGUINE CON LE VONGOLE) Serves 4 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1 onion, finely diced 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 red chilli, finely chopped 4 Roma tomatoes, peeled and finely diced ¼ cup white wine 1kg fresh cockles/vongole, rinsed Sea salt flakes Freshly ground pepper Flat leaf Italian parsley, roughly chopped 600g fresh linguine

Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat; add onion, garlic and chilli and cook until soft and lightly coloured. Add tomatoes and cook for a few minutes, then deglaze pan with white wine.

Add cockles, place lid on saucepan and cook, covered, for about 5 minutes, until all the cockle shells have opened up.

Season lightly (as cockles can be quite salty), grind some fresh pepper and garnish with fresh parsley.

Meanwhile, bring a large saucepan of salted water to the boil, add linguine and cook for 3-4 minutes until al dente; drain and toss with vongole.

BUTTERFLIED SPICED BARBECUE CHICKEN Serves 2-4 1 whole chicken, butterflied 4 garlic cloves, finely diced 1 long red chilli, finely diced 1 tbsp smoked paprika 1 tsp hot paprika 1 tsp sweet paprika 1 tbsp ground cumin 1 tbsp ground coriander 1 tbsp ground fennel 1 tsp dried chilli flakes

½ cup extra virgin olive oil Sea salt flakes Pepper To serve: Lime cheeks, coriander leaves and 2 sliced chillies

In a large mixing bowl combine garlic, diced chilli, all the spices and extra virgin olive oil.

Marinate chicken in mixture for a few hours, or overnight for a better result. Season with salt and pepper.

Place chicken on a preheated barbecue grill, skin-side down. Cover with lid and cook for 8-10 minutes, until golden and charred.

Flip chicken and continue to barbecue until chicken is cooked through, about 5-8 minutes.

Serve with lime cheeks, coriander and chilli.

SPRING LAMB RACK Serves 4 8-bone quality lamb rack ½ cup extra virgin olive oil 4 long red chillies, finely diced 4 garlic cloves, finely diced Zest of 2 lemon ½ bunch thyme, finely chopped 4 sprigs rosemary, finely chopped Sea salt and pepper ½ bunch parsley, finely chopped 6 brown onions, finely sliced

Pre-heat oven to 190C. Prepare the lamb rack by removing excess fat on the surface, leaving enough to flavour the lamb and caramelise. Scrape meat away from the bones to tidy up.

In a mixing bowl, combine oil, chilli, garlic, lemon zest, thyme and rosemary, and season with salt and pepper. Divide marinade into two; add parsley to one bowl and set aside for post-marinade. Spread lamb in other half of mixture and marinate for up to an hour in the fridge.

Heat a large frypan and place the lamb rack skin-side down. Cook for a few minutes to ensure the fat renders. Make a layer of onion on a baking tray and set the lamb rack on top, then bake for 25-30 minutes, or until cooked to your liking (I recommend medium rare).

Remove from oven and place into the postmarinade. Rest for 6-10 minutes then slice and serve.

village food & wine RHUBARB, PINE NUT AND CUSTARD CROSTATA Serves 6 Pastry 500g plain flour 175g icing sugar 250g butter, diced Zest of 1 lemon Seeds from 1 vanilla pod 1½ eggs Filling ½ bunch rhubarb 2 tbsp caster sugar Pine nut streusel 1/3 cup pine nuts 20g melted butter 20g brown sugar 35g caster sugar Custard 250ml double cream 250ml milk Seeds from 1 vanilla pod 8 egg yolks 100g caster sugar Grated nutmeg

Pre-heat oven to 180C. To make pastry, blitz all ingredients in a food processor; rest for 30 minutes in the fridge. Roll out pastry between two pieces of greaseproof paper and place in an oiled, rectangular flan tin (makes 2 crostata, or tarts). Prick with a fork and place baking beads on top. Bake for 10 minutes, then remove baking beads and bake for a further 10 minutes.

In the meantime, add rhubarb to a roasting tray and sprinkle with caster sugar. Bake for 10 minutes or until soft. Set aside.

For the pine nut streusel, blitz the pine nuts, butter and sugars, pour onto a lined tray and bake for 5 minutes. Set aside.

To make custard, heat cream, milk, zest and vanilla seeds. Whisk egg yolks and sugar; add cream mix and combine. Add nutmeg, then pour custard into pastry tart shells.

Reduce oven to 120C and bake for 30 minutes, or until set. Allow to cool.

To assemble, remove tarts from the tins and layer rhubarb flat across the top. Sprinkle with pine nut streusel and serve immediately.

MOTHER’S MILK BAROSSA SHIRAZ

This has garnered a bit of a cult following in recent years, which is not surprising with it funky, modern label and the fact that it’s being poured in some of our trendy bars.

It’s a typical Barossa shiraz with a bouquet of dark cherry and blackberries which follows with a soft, yet luscious palate. This well-balanced and approachable wine pairs exceptionally well with your favourite cut of steak and pomme frites.

SAINT COSME COTE-DU-RHONE

We love our local wines but, if you’re looking for something a little different and are a little adventurous, we recommend this wine.
