A Legacy of Land and Community

As we reflect on four decades of community, growth and resilience at Burnie Brae, we acknowledge this milestone is not just a numerical achievement, it’s a testament to the unwavering spirit that has shaped this remarkable place.

The Hamilton family, deeply rooted in Burnie Brae, began this journey. Ian Hamilton, a descendant of the owners of the original Burnie Brae, recently shared the rich history that defines this community.

In the mid-1800s, Andrew Hamilton bought 20 acres at Downfall Creek. The family started in a small hut in Dead Man’s Gully. By 1873, with Thomas Hopkins, Andrew began building Burnie Brae, a house named for its hilltop location. Despite Andrew’s passing before its completion in 1897, the house remained a family treasure.

Andrew’s vision extended beyond their home. He acquired more land along Gympie Road, establishing a coachbuilding, wheelwright, and blacksmith shop to serve Brisbane’s growing population.

Today, Burnie Brae is a living tapestry woven by countless lives. It’s about laughter, friendships, and a resilient community. As we celebrate 40 years of the Hamilton legacy, we honour the past while embracing the future. Burnie Brae remains a beacon where stories intersect, memories are made, and hearts find comfort. We extend our gratitude to our staff, volunteers, members, sponsors, and supporters. Your unwavering support ensures Burnie Brae’s legacy endures for generations.

Thank you for making four decades possible and for calling Burnie Brae home.
