Cultivating Connections: Doug’s Story Doug grew up on a farm near the Gold Coast, where the simplicity of life, vast open spaces and quality time with family left a lasting impression on him. The rustic charm of rural living instilled in him a deep appreciation for nature and a strong sense of community. After many years in the steel industry and living across Australia, Doug faced the retirement question: "What brings me joy, and what will I do today?" This contemplation sparked his journey into the world of community engagement. Doug first joined our Healthy Connections exercise clinic, kickstarting his journey to a healthier lifestyle. Shortly after, he began

volunteering in the Burnie Brae community garden, cultivating plants and working alongside fellow members until he was physically unable. Exploring his interests, Doug discovered the game of Mahjong, describing it as a social activity where you can develop friendships and exercise the brain. Doug now helps to run Burnie Brae member activities, including Mahjong and card games. His fellow players nominated him for this year’s Burnie Brae Life Membership award, recognising his consistent dedication, friendliness, patience and selflessness in helping others. Beyond Burnie Brae, Doug dedicates his free time to bush revegetation around his home and spending time with his four sons and eleven grandchildren. His is grateful to still call his family home of 47 years his own, receiving care services that enable him to maintain his independence. Doug's journey is one of family, community dedication, and a zest for life that continues to inspire those around him. In his words, "I find joy and satisfaction in helping people – it's a labour of love. Burnie Brae is a wonderful organisation to be a part of, with marvellous staff!"
