Little Free Library If you take a wander along the footpath off Green Lane, or on the footpath through the woods off the old line, you will find the Little Free Library. Along with the Tree of Knowledge Sculpture, the library was officially opened on Monday 23rd October by chainsaw sculptor Richie Barnsey Barnes (pictured right) The Library was the brainchild of Jennifer Deary and has been installed on her land for everyone to use. Books can be borrowed from the library and donations of books can be left for others to read. Thank you Jennifer! We’re sure people will enjoy discovering and using the Library.

Burnhope Parish Council Hello everyone, it’s been a busy year in Burnhope. As this is going to be the last issue of the Burnhope Wheel produced in 2023 I thought I would let you know a bit more about what the Parish Council do and some of the things we have been involved in rather than focus on the ongoing issues which we tend to see repeating themselves over the years.

Your Parish Council is made up of a group of Councillors who volunteer their time to attend meetings where discussion takes place about issues within the village and requests for funding from external groups are considered.

We meet on the first Thursday of each month at the Community Centre at 6pm and minutes of all previous meetings are available to view on the Parish Council Website at www.burnhopeparishcouncil.com.

Solar Farm We also look at planning matters, with the most contentious issue this year being the vast Solar development by Lightsourcebp which was approved by Durham County Council despite a large number of local objections, including an objection raised by the Parish Council. There are now further issues involving closure of footpaths which are ongoing.

New Play Equipment The provision of new play equipment at the play park located next to the Cricket Club at the end of South View is now out for procurement, and work will commence in 2024

External Funding Members voted to give the Junior Section of the Cricket club £500. We have also agreed to support the Heritage 100 Walk for Burnhope (further information in separate article). We have also refurbished one of the coal wagons by the pit wheel which had fallen into disrepair.

Anti-Social Behaviour We do continue to see some instances of anti-social behaviour within the village, including issues with quad bikes, we urge you to keep reporting these problems by phoning 101 Police rather than posting on social media, as it’s important that there is an official record kept which will help with any future police investigations.

Christmas Tree The Christmas Tree will again be lit up this year, we’ll try to let everyone know when we have a date for the official switch on.

80th Anniversary of D Day County Durham District Councils will be co-ordinating a commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of the D Day Landings with a lighting of the beacon in the picnic area. This will be a joint venture with Lanchester Parish Council on 6th June 2024.

Mid Durham Area Action Partnership AAP Hello residents of Burnhope. There are a few things that the Area Action Partnership (AAP) is looking to fund or support in Burnhope and we hope you will appreciate them when they come around.

The newly anticipated play area that the Area Action Partnership helped fund, is currently ‘out for procurement’, which means we are asking prospective manufacturers to bid for the job of building this for the community.

We have recently supported a bid from the Community Centre to continue their work with younger children, so the clubs currently in operation can continue for a further year.

We are also looking to support the primary school in renewing their climbing frame for the early years children.

At the time of writing this article we are also scheduled to meet with representatives of Burnhope Cricket Club whom we know have a big role in your community. They are keen to improve their practice facilities and cricket nets, so we will be discussing where we may be able to support that venture with some of our funding where possible.

Corporately within the Council, you may know they/we are facing significant financial challenges and the council’s budget consultation has been taking place. There is a second round of consultation as earlier financial forecasts have changed and there is a need to find even more savings. For the latest round of consultations, please search...

www.durham.gov.uk/consultation to have your say on the Council’s Budget This highlights some savings impacting on AAPs, or ‘Local Networks’ which is what AAPs will become in 2025.

Finally, and am not sure if you will receive this information in time but Lumiere is returning to Durham City on Thursday 16 November through to the Sunday.

Search your web browser for ‘Lumiere Festival’ for more information. We have been able to secure tickets (tickets are free) in advance for more vulnerable groups and those less likely to attend because of disability or illness across our AAP area.

News from your...

County Councillors & MP As we start to look toward the winter, Christmas and the end of the year, County Councillors Mike McGaun and Doug Oliver continue to work closely with Richard Holden, our Member of Parliament, and people from across the village to ensure that Burnhope is heard both across the County and nationally.

A particular initiative we are backing at the moment is to seek to change the Durham County Council ward name of “Lanchester” which Burnhope sits in - to include Burnhope’s name. The Boundary Commission is reviewing ward boundaries for the County Council at the moment and as part of this, we have encouraged groups in the village - like the Parish Council and Burnhope Partnership - to join us in our push to change the ward name to “Burnhope and Lanchester” to reflect the village’s distinct identity. We should find out if we have been successful at the end of the Autumn.

At County Hall, a priority remains to work to raise concerns about the solar farm that was approved north of the village in March of this year.

We are working with some residents who are continuing to oppose the application, but we are also keen to ensure feedback about footpaths, visibility and access is escalated to the highest levels and we continue to do this.

In terms of planning, we are working to ensure that the Greenwood Avenue site is developed – albeit in a positive way that reflect resident needs, including recreation space for residents. The Government provided key funding for this a couple of years ago, and in July we convened a meeting with the Council officer leading the project, as well as the Cabinet member responsible and we were grateful that Alan Gibson from Burnhope Primary School governors joined us in support.

As County Councillors, we know how important it is for people to feel safe at home and around the village. Whilst Burnhope remains a great place to live, we have developed a close relationship with our local Police Community Support Officer, Paige, and the team at Consett Police Station to help with the concerns of residents. This has included feedback about things like noise, vandalism and animal welfare from time to time. If you are aware of a criminal offence, please do report it on 101, but if you would like to share confidential information with us, please do so.

Nationally, our MP Richard Holden continues to be very busy with his job as Minister at the Department for Transport and his particular focus which includes buses and roads – as well as things like driving licences, lorries and local transport issues which includes work with the Mayor of London.

As Councillors we have been very impressed by the £163m Bus Service Improvement Plan, but we are continuing to push for extra transport funds so they are not just used by the big cities on Tyneside and Wearside.

In terms of local roads, we are in close contact with the Highways team at the Council about road repair and sorting out various potholes in and around Burnhope. We were pleased that some work has recently been done, but we welcome feedback from residents on other work.

Anti-social behaviour has increased within the area and targeted patrols are going to be taking place to monitor what is going on and identify the youths involved. If youths are caught causing issues and being a nuisance action will be taken and they will be spoken to in front of parents. There has been no other issues within the village.

Burnhope Carpet Bowls Club AN EXCUSE FOR A GOOD NATTER Hi everyone, my name is Julie Gorman-Cliff and I'm the new Wellbeing Coordinator based at Burnhope Community Centre.

We bowl on a short carpet, much easier to be sociable than on the full size competition arena at Stanley or an outside crown green. Our bowling isn’t competitive, it’s an excuse to sit together and have a good natter. We cheer when anyone manages a good shot, even when they knock your ball away.

IT’S ABOUT FUN NOT WINNING We’re an inclusive club, our eldest is in her late 80s our youngest in her early teens. Several have health issues, everyone enjoys taking part, there’s great bonhomie. Some bring family who sit and natter. Our coffee break is usually more than 20 minutes, consuming several biscuits!

EVERYONE WELCOME A bit about my background: I moved to Burnhope 4½ years ago from Tudhoe. I have lived in County Durham for 14 years and am originally from Staffordshire. I have two children, Clara (5) and Bartie (3) and am married to Marc.

I'm a qualified therapist with many years of experience of assisting others to overcome their mental and emotional difficulties. As well as professional qualifications, I bring a wealth of lived experience and wisdom at overcoming adversity. I am passionate about empowering others to live happy and healthy lives.

We’ve two carpets, between four and eight people can bowl on each carpet.

We’ve fourteen members with six to eight regularly bowling twice a week.

Wednesday 6 to 8pm and Friday 1:30 to 3:30pm at Burnhope Community Centre.

We collect £2 for each session and use it to pay for outings. We’ve been to Stanley bowling twice, Washington 10 pin bowling twice, afternoon tea, an event every few months.

COME AND HAVE FUN WITH US AT OUR COMMUNITY CENTRE

Leading by example is an important value to me and I enjoy promoting self-awareness, self-care, and compassion for others.

We have recently run a successful mindfulness course at the community centre, which will continue.

Please watch this space for the launching of a support group for those with Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, MS, ME and other fatigue and chronic pain conditions.

With the winter months around the corner, it is important to remember that we take care of ourselves and those around us. I'm going to leave you with the ‘5 ways to wellbeing’ - steps that we can take to look after our wellbeing.

Burnhope Community Centre Christmas Fayre stalls including tarot, crafts and Sunday 26 November from 2 – 4pm much more plus a visit from Santa!

COMING SOON - LIVES BUILT ON COAL COLLECTION On permanent display at Burnhope Community Centre, Langley Avenue, Burnhope, DH7 0AG The Lives Built on Coal Exhibition, held at the Community Centre in May, was truly a monumental success, with over 300 visitors in one weekend.

Building on the depth of interest generated, Cindy Brockington has been cataloguing all the photographs and written words that have been so generously donated, in an effort to create a collection which will be available to the public.

Organised into categories featuring Mining, Living, Shops and Businesses, Leisure, Schools, Church and Chapel there should be material of interest for everyone.

It is hoped that the archive will grow with more and more material gifted to the project.

Please consider giving any photographs, certificates, articles etc to the collection so that a full history of the little mining village of Burnhope (which did not exist until the 1840’s) can be shared with future generations.

I pose the question, “Where is the evidence today of the past life of this village?” Acting now to preserve memories and heritage means that, “The village that refused to die,” will, ‘be caught in time.’

The collection will be housed in a lockable cabinet at the Community Centre. Anyone wishing to browse through the contents or even to do some research of their own, will be able to have access on Thursdays at the weekly coffee mornings and at other times by contacting either Cindy or Dave Brockington on 01207 775069.

The Centre can be opened, specially when other activities are not taking place, for individuals and groups to view the display boards and collection.

It is hoped that in the future recorded conversations, capturing memories of living and working

in Burnhope will be made readily available, also the Community Centre website will feature articles about the project and eventually the catalogued material will be available as an archive on the internet.

If you have precious photographs or the written word please be assured that all items can be photocopied and the originals returned.

Burnhope Primary School Learning to play, learn and discover together

This term we have fully immersed ourselves in all things Autumn.

We’ve been on a conker hunt, collected blackberries to turn into paint and, of course, saved enough to bake a delicious apple and blackberry crumble!

Spending time outdoors has helped us to learn all about the changing seasons and we decided to create our own pumpkin patch to explore how pumpkins grow, where seeds come from and find out just how large or small pumpkins can grow.

This month we have also been on our first trip of the new school year, visiting Wharton Park on the hunt for a terrifying dragon from ‘Room on the Broom’- a story written by one of our favourite authors, Julia Donaldson!

The children made clay monsters, created nature soup and constructed a new broomstick for the story characters.

Rounding off the first half term, we decided to take inspiration from another Julia Donaldson book (The Scarecrow’s Wedding) and challenge the whole school to a Scarecrow making competition!

We used excellent teamwork, planning and communication to bring our designs to life and the results were amazing!

Finally, a huge thank you to all who dropped in to see us at our EYFS Open Day in October! We thoroughly enjoyed meeting you all and playing in our classroom and gardens together.

The Nightmare Man by Lily H (Class 4) Claudia had been panic-stricken ever since she moved into her own room. Kim (her sister) knew; she made her life a living hell. Darkness.

Every time the sun went down, she would beg to just to have at least the hall light on. Anything to delay Claudia clambering up the stairs (on the inside she was wailing with terror). Anything to delay the horrific, dreaded walk from the light switch to bed.

One moment the room was brighter than the sun; the next what felt like half a second, and the room was isolated in one of the most remote parts of the house. The lamp in the corner looked like a giant, about to crush you with just one breath. The bag on the back of the door looked like a monkey on a swing, getting ready to attack. Both of them were waiting, preparing for the moment when just one of her eyes slightly closed and they would turn around and turn her room upside down.

Claudia lay on her bed. Covered, surrounded, strangled by her own terror. She squinted at the monkey and the giant. Neither of them ever even attempted to move a muscle but she was sure that when she started to doze off, her room would look like a tornado had hit it. But the thing that was in her top ten scariest things ever was…The Nightmare Man. Claudia had seen him more times than she can count, examining her soul like she was his mortal enemy – the most giant, unilluminated, dark shape with a moth-bitten cloak billowing out behind him and two admiral eyes that flickered. She had spent the rest of the night concealed below her sheets, waiting for the morning. She wouldn’t dare tell anyone in case they thought she was delusional. Since the night of seeing The Nightmare Man, she made sure that every night the shutters were closed and the wardrobe covered the windows.

The night of the storm, Claudia was trembling. She was shaking so much that the glass of water on her night stand and Terry the turtle’s tank on the dresser almost crashed to the ground. Without warning, all of a sudden, the clouds turned ash-grey. The sky turned obsidianblack when the clouds claimed the moon with its titanium arms – the moon was suffocated.

There’s no way The Nightmare Man would ever step out of his house on a night like this, right? Claudia just needed to know. Body tensing, she crept from the bed, pushed the cupboard out of the way, opened the curtains and peeked out of the window. It was both horrific and uncomfortable. More uncomfortable than lying on a bed of nails to stand there. She saw The Nightmare Man clinging onto the second story window with his identical, twin-admiral eyes staring right at her.

The View and Meadowfield fundraising for the community!

The View would firstly like to thank all the community from the bottom of our hearts for all the continued support as without you all we could not have had so many successful community events recently.

Since the last Burnhope Wheel, the View was part of the Summer Fayre and what a fantastic day it was, thank you to everyone for their dedication in organising this event as it is not an easy task. The View raised an amazing amount of £285.00 which was given to the Burnhope Partnership to continue their fantastic work (see photo right).

The View’s Halloween bake sale was an outstanding day also, so many of the community come to celebrate with us, which was lovely to see. We raised a further £258.50 which was given to the Burnhope Community Centre to hire a disco for their Halloween event so all the children and young people in the village could enjoy themselves.

In December we will be supporting The Bridge School based in Lanchester with their annual Christmas Fayre on Friday 1st December 2023 between 10:00-12:00, all money raised will be donated to the Willow Burn Hospice. One of our team members works at The Bridge and everything they do for their children and young people is just incredible, so we are excited to support them for the first time.

In March 2024 for St Patrick’s celebrations the View and Meadowfield will come together for another community bake sale, with raffle and tombola prizes to be won.

All the money raised from the St Patrick’s event will be donated to Burnhope Primary School to contribute to the children and young people’s school trips.

Thank you to those who took part in our Halloween trail, the night was an amazing success, we were blown away by your spooktacular Halloween costumes and lots of terrifyingly terrific fun was had by all. The entries to our pumpkin carving competition were brilliant and we can not thank you enough for all of your efforts. A total of £111.67 was raised for the Burnhope Partnership and we know these funds will be put to good use within the community.

As always, the View love seeing all the community coming together and we will continue all our fundraising to make sure this happens.

Solar Farm update

Burnhope Residents granted Judicial Review

As most residents will be aware, Durham County Council approved the application by Lightsourcebp for the installation of a solar farm alongside our village. This will result in the loss of all our safe and level walking areas.

The beautiful countryside would no longer exist and it would be replaced by an industrialised area of glass, metal and cables. The landscape and the wildlife which inhabits or nests in those areas would no longer be able to do so.

In spite of our great disappointment at this decision, a group of residents and concerned neighbours of our village decided to take action.

We have engaged the services of a solicitor and subsequently a barrister with great experience in matters similar to this.

It is our belief based upon the plans submitted by Lightsourcebp that the output will be significantly in excess of that which Durham County Council (DCC) has the authority to pass. It also appears DCC have not themselves checked what the output of the solar farm will be and have trusted the information provided by Lightsourcebp.

In view of this and with our barristers believing we have grounds for an appeal a request was made to the High Court of England and Wales for a judicial review. High Court Judge, The Hon. Ms. Justice Lang, has granted permission for a Judicial Review stating that we have raised arguable concerns that warrant this.

The Judicial Review will be held in Leeds on 17th January 2024.

It is a significant achievement for our case as only a very small number of appeals, approximately 5%, are considered to have demonstrated sufficient grounds to be allowed to go to Judicial review.

We have tried to raise awareness of this through Back to Black, Keep It Green, with leaflets delivered to all residents.

An article has appeared in The Northern Echo.

Practice News Autumn/Winter 2023 THE HAVEN SURGERY Feeding Families Feeding Families is about bringing communities together. In challenging times when families struggle to make ends meet, they link donors to families who need help. The practice is taking part in Feeding Families again this year. There is a box in the reception area for donations. The practice would like to thank you all for your continual support.

Patients Eligible for FLU Vaccines everyone aged 65 years and over everyone under 65 years of age who has a medical condition including children and babies over 6 months of age all pregnant women, at any stage of pregnancy all children aged 2 and 3 years (provided they were aged 2 or 3 years on 31 August before flu vaccinations starts in the autumn) all children in primary school some secondary school-aged children (Years 7 to 11) everyone living in a residential or nursing home everyone who receives a carer’s allowance, or are the main carer for an older or disabled person all those living with someone who has lowered immunity due to disease or treatment all frontline health and social care workers

Dr Yewande has a partnership at a practice at Darlington, Ashleigh has moved to another practice and sadly Susan has now retired.

We welcome new staff and have a new GP starting this November Dr Saadia Rehman who many of you may have met before as she has covered at the surgery as a Locum for many years now.

Kathryn Pomphrett is our new Health Care Assistant and has been with us since September 2023.

We are currently looking to recruit a new dispenser/receptionist.

Susan's Retirement After 17 years working at The Haven Surgery, Susan retired from the practice on the 31st October 2023.

Susan will be a huge miss to both the practice and our patients, and we wish her every happiness in her retirement.

If you are eligible for a free vaccine and would like to book an appointment at the surgery, please give us a call. If you do not want to have these vaccinations but are eligible, please inform the surgery so we can update your records.

Staff Changes We have sadly said goodbye to 3 members of our staff in October. Dr Yewande, Ashleigh Bell and Susan Lightfoot have now left the surgery.

Dr Yewande has a partnership at a practice at Darlington, Ashleigh has moved to another practice and sadly Susan has now retired.

The practice no longer accepts repeat or acute prescription requests over the telephone. To order repeat or acute medication can be done using the online service where you will need to first contact the practice to request your username and password and then log on through the Haven Surgery website

Alternatively use the NHS app which is easy to navigate. We also have a box located at the entrance of the practice to drop off your repeat slip and for an acute medication request write your name, DOB and medication required on a piece of paper. Please don’t hesitate to contact the surgery for further advice regarding repeat prescription orders.

No orders will be taken over the phone.

Continuation of Vulnerable Adults Weekend Service The Frail and Elderly Weekend Service is still in service for this winter period. This service offers GP intervention and assessments of vulnerable patients over the weekend.

Extended Hours Extended hour appointments are available from Tanfield View Medical Group in Stanley.

Appointments are available on an evening from 6.30-8:30pm and Weekend Sessions are 9-1.30pm. These appointments can be booked through The Haven Surgery.

Patients Eligible for COVID Vaccines The following people are eligible for an autumn Covid booster: Residents in care homes for older adults All adults aged 65 years and over People aged 6 months to 64 years in a clinical risk group frontline health and social care workers.

News from the Pews A few THANK YOUS to go out this time round and in no particular order!

Thank you to those of Burnhope community who came together to rescue St John’s Churchyard. The grass was looking like a scene from the film ‘Out of Africa’! But with your hard work, enthusiasm and dedication it was soon back to how it should look.

Another thank you to Carol and Cyndy who donated the takings from their craft stall at the Fun Day to St John’s Church.

Lastly, but not least, thank you to all who came along to support the Pie and Pea Supper held at the Community Centre in aid of St John’s. Burnhope has a great community spirit and you are all proof of it!

As winter is approaching, we are continuing to have our Lunchtime Social in the Community Centre at 12.30pm every Wednesday, excluding the 1st Wednesday of the month. We offer a warm welcome, a free warm lunch and a chance to meet old and new friends for a chat and a catch-up.

Didn’t really what to mention the ‘C’ word – Christmas!

We are busy preparing for St John’s up-and-coming Christmas Fair on Saturday, 9 December 2.00pm – 4.00pm. There will be stalls to kick start your Christmas Shopping or grab a last minute bargain, tombola, raffle and not to mention everyone’s favourite – the cake stall and loads more. Pop along it would be great to see you all there.

Christmas service times will be posted on the St John’s Facebook page and Christmas cards showing the information will be delivered to everyone in the Village in December.

Walking & stories on the The Heritage 100 walks The Heritage 100 is a series of 100 circular, collectable walks with accompanying stories based in County Durham. The idea is to create a series of walks people can collect like the Wainwrights in the Lake District. We may not have the mountains, but we have a diverse and beautiful landscape in County Durham that is grievously underrated.

Alongside the walk we have the story of each area to be written by author David Willem. David has written historical books on St Cuthbert and Black Rood.

We want to produce stories that come from the community. Narratives that give a sense of place through anecdotal stories, keeping alive those oral histories.

We also want to attract commerce to the area to support businesses such as The Garage Bar & Grille who can certainly help feed hungry walkers!

The story will also become a focus for resources we can give to local school and we intend to take out selected children and staff to teach them their local H100 walk.

We would like Burnhope to be one of the Heritage 100 and I have met with the Parish Council on a few occasions to discuss our plans.

With the support of a number of residents we have devised a route for the walk. We need DCC permission to install the route at this time and we are working on the funding to write the story and install the walk. Each walk's beginning and end is marked by a grandfather clock shaped oak post with the H100 logo and a scenic engraving to give it a bespoke finish.

When we've installed the walk, I will come and walk with the community to help familiarise them with it. We will look for community custodians, people who will keep an eye on it and report any damage to us. David, our author will come and interview anyone wishing to contribute to the story, most likely over a cup of coffee at the Garage Bar & Grille.

A project like this is only good as the support it gets from local communities. To this point we have had excellent support from Burnhope Parish Council and in particular Sarah McCormick, Caroline McCulloch and David Brockington.

We are looking forward to delivering a H100 walk for Burnhope and we thank you again for your support.

Juniors Cricket Club News

by David Selby As you are reading this Burnhope CC Juniors will have had their annual presentation evening at Lanchester Social Club celebrating yet another successful year.

A successful start to the junior season, saw our Under 13’s side winning their first ever game, By a contest at home against Burnopfield. As the season went on, the young side David Selby showed continuous development, going from strength to strength culminating in a close fought battle with local junior cricket giants, Hetton Lyons.

A 3rd place finish in the Tyneside League for the Under 11’s, showed exactly what three years of hard work can achieve. As one of the oldest sides in the competition, the junior hopers will see 5 players move up into the Under 13’s bracket. A season highlight was the standout win at home against eventual league winners Shotley Bridge.

Our most successful side for the calendar year were our Under 9’s. The newly established team had success in winning the Burnhope Mask Plate and the East Rainton Under 9’s Plate at their respective festivals. Throughout the year, the team facilitated first time games for 11 new members with a major positive being only two players will advance to the Under 11’s, leaving Burnhope with a strong development base in the Under 9’s.

2024 will see a new project led by Durham Cricket as Burnhope CC will become a Super 1s Hub for children with disabilities to enjoy our wonderful game.

Our young female age groups showed promise, with hardball victories at Under 11’s and 13’s levels. This is a great sign for the future as our women’s and girls sections continues to grow.

Additionally, the club ran successful national programmes, with All Stars and Dynamos providing young people from a variety of different backgrounds a chance to play on the Burnhope turf.

Huge thanks must go to our three major sponsors this year Stephenson MOHL, Cestria Land Ltd and Derwentside Funeral Services. They all played key parts in keeping the juniors running throughout 2023.

Little Free Library If you take a wander along the footpath off Green Lane, or on the footpath through the woods off the old line you will find the Little Free Library along with the Tree of Knowledge Sculpture which was official opened on Monday 23rd October by chainsaw sculptor Richie Barnes, who created the amazing sculpture.

The Library was the brainchild of Jennifer Deary and has been installed on her land for everyone to use. Books can be borrowed from the library and donations of books can be left for others to read. Thank you Jennifer! We’re sure people will enjoy discovering and using the Library.
