Second K9 gets approved JONATHAN RICHIE EDITOR@BURNETTCOUNTYSENTINEL.COM

The Public Safety committee approved purchasing a second K-9 unit to help get drugs off the streets of Burnett County. Sheriff Tracy Finch was surprised with how fast the Burnett County Law Enforcement Citizens Auxiliary or BCLAEC raised the funds.

Charlie and Lisa Slater of the BCLAEC have been fundraising for a second K-9 since Sept. and it has been worth it. “We just want to thank Lisa and Charlie for all their help with this process,” Finch said. She added that the K-9’s food and veterinary care will be donated to the department at no cost. The public safety committee was first approached by Finch a couple of months

ago and had no clue the money would be raised this fast. About $20,000 is needed to find the dog, in Slovakia, then train the dog for police work with a hand-selected trainer from the sheriff’s office. They will be using the same trainer as they did a few years ago for the K-9 Tracker, a purebred German Sheppard SEE K9, PAGE 2

Extend the life of your Christmas tree KAYLA CASEY SENTINEL STAFF

If you haven’t yet placed a Christmas tree in your home and are looking to cut your own or purchase one from a

tree lot, here are some tips and tricks to help extend the life and the freshness of your Christmas tree. WHEN BUYING A TREE • Don’t hesitate to ask the

tree lot owners where the trees came from and how recently they were cut down. Trees are typically cut down from mid-November to mid-December- try to purchase a tree that was cut down within the last

week if possible. • Before purchasing, run your fingers along the branches of the tree. Feel for soft, flexible needles that are a deep green in color. If the tree’s needles are dry, stiff or brittle, it’s

not going to pull up as much water as it should and will dry out and die quicker. • Pick up the tree and give it a good shake. If a lot of needles SEE CHRISTMAS TREES, PAGE 2
