On a recent Friday afternoon, Grantsburg fourth graders learned to play the challenging game of chess in less than an hour. A new tool helped bring the ancient game to life for the 10-yearolds. The trick to engaging them was an oversized set called “Mega-Chess.” Its 24-36" pieces and 8x8-foot game board are big enough that kids can walk among the pieces. The whole class got involved. For the learning session, the game was set on the tiled floor in the Middle School commons. On nice days, the all-weather set will go outdoors for games on sand, grass or concrete, perhaps even snow. Krista Kielty volunteered her 24 fourth graders as the first class to play Mega- Chess. Earlier, she prepared her students by discussing the game’s 1,500-year history, its rules of play, and by showing a video of other elementary-age students playing chess. 65 years ago, Wisconsin patriot established Veterans Day MADISON— In 1915, Harvey Higley graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Just two years later, the life of this Marinette County native changed forever when the United States declared war on Germany, entering into
World War I. Higley, a chemical engineer, walked out of private employment and entered service in the greatest conflict the world had known. He served in France, and for the rest of his life, one of his greatest concerns was
caring for his fellow veterans. He served as secretary of veteran’s affairs under President Dwight Eisenhower, and among Higley’s lasting achievements was es-tablishing Veterans Day as a national holiday. Higley believed that the

A Frederic man is headed to California in hopes of winning a National Championship. The race is next weekend as part of the NHRA (National Hod Rod Association) Summit Racing Series National Championship. Steve Roehrs was able to out-
perform over 100 other drivers to punch his ticket to race in Po-mona, Calif. for a national title. He races in the Pro class in his 1982 Camaro. In Sept. Roehrs took his Camaro to Topeka, Kan. for the fifth division qualifying race. The Pro class has seven division qualifiers and a wildcard qualifier. Sunday, Nov. 17 is race day
and Roehrs is confident after his Topeka victory and hopes to bring home a national title. Each national champion will receive $5,000, an NHRA Gold Card, a champions trophy, and a jacket. All qualifiers who attend the Pomona race are guaranteed to receive a minimum of $3,000.
