BURNETT COUNTY—Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College (WITC) has partnered with Softec to bring a technical college to Burnett County. WITC President John Will, came to the County Supervisors meeting to explain what the college offers, how they operate and what their vision is for the new facility at 25070 Hwy. 35. The building is just north and across the street from the Government Center in Meenon. A few weeks ago they had their sign installed and began offering classes. Will said that the course they had was called Human Resources for Non-human Resources People and had nine students attend. WITC offers one-year degree programs in welding as well as two-year degree programs in accounting, machining, nursing, and many more. Early in the presentation Will stressed that in the past technical and traditional four-year degrees were two separate paths and now that is not necessarily the case. “It is now easier for students to transfer from a technical school to a more traditional university in the UW-System or Minnesota,” Will said. “Some students can start a short-term program and then go on to full four-year schools. They do not have to choose between the two anymore.” He explained that students now have the ability to start at WITC and end up with their educational tract wherever they would like. Will said that WITC does offer liberal arts classes and general education classes, also referred to as 100 level college courses. He said they offer these courses as another incentive for potential employers. “We have an advisory committee and SEE COUNTY BOARD, PAGE 2
The Forty & Eight have been busy throughout the winter helping families who have lost their valuables in fires over the last couple of months. “Families will lose everything in these fires and that is where we step in and help anyway we can,” said 40/8 Director of Child Welfare for Voiture 236 Bob Blomgren. La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux or Forty & Eight has over 35,000 member Voyageurs worldwide. They are dedicated to child welfare and Nurses training. Bob Blomgren has been in the Forty & Eight for 33 years. He initially could not recall how long he’s been in the group so he goes to his wallet and pulls out his membership card. “This one is for 2019 and says 34 years of service,” Blomgren says with a grin. “So in 2020 it’ll be 35 years with the Forty & Eight.” The Polk-Burnett County 40 et 8 Voiture 236 gathers SEE 40/8, PAGE 2 SUBMITTED
BE HAPPY! Earlier this month, Webster students took part in Happiness Day. A day where students stood outside and spread the word of happiness and positivity throughout the community. The message quickly spread to Siren and hopefully other schools.
