Grantsburg fifth grader finishes in second place in DNR contest The Wisconsin DNR received over 200 submissions and Kaiya Davis, Grantsburg, was chosen as the second-place finalist amongst all fifth grade students. Their Keep Wildlife Wild poster contest is in its inaugural year. She is in Ms. Hoefs fifth grade class and recieved a letter in March stating she was a top finisher. Kaiya’s mother, Thyra, is extremely proud of what her daughter has accomplished. “I was blown away when I heard about it,” Thyra said. “She was chosen second in the whole state. That made me extremely proud of her and her talents.” Kaiya’s poster is split in two sides. The left side says “It can get to the water itself! You don’t know what it eats,” reads Kaiya’s caption under big bold red letters stating, “Leave it.” Kaiya describes a story of when her family had turtles and they had to let them go into the wild for a plethora of reasons. A story centered around WWI Veterans living in an old soldiers’ home in France in the late 1950s is the story coming to the American Legion Hall in Grantsburg during Memorial Day Weekend. “The story goes on and Rod Kleiss the audience finds out – do they have one more mission left in them?” Rod Kleiss, of Grantsburg, said. Kleiss, along with his other two co-stars will be showing off their acting chops in a production called Heroes May 24 and 25 at 8 p.m. The shows are free to veterans and $10 for nonveterans with tickets available at the door. The play, a comedy, revolves around three WWI veterans living in an old soldiers’ home
in 1959. Heroes originated from Le Vent Des Peupliers by Gérald Sibleyras written in 2003, it was then translated and adapted for English audiences by Tom Stoppard in 2005. The three soldiers - Henri, Phillippe and Gustav - are planning their escape from the institution in 1959 under the watchful eye of Sister Mary Madeleine, one of the many nurses watching over the soldiers. Kleiss, playing the role of Gustave, has taken every opportunity to act over the last 30 years. He started at the Park Square Theater in Saint Paul. He has played Mathew in Anne of Green Gables, Chief Beatty in Fahrenheit 451 and Salieri in Amadeus. Pat O’Brien plays Henri. He points out that people of a certain age (no one under the age of 30) will recognize him from playing math teacher, Mr. Dewey, on the show Saved SEE HEROES, PAGE 2
Successful Earth Day Cleanup of the Gandy Dancer State Trail POLK/BURNETT COUNTY—Friends of the Gandy Dancer State Trail (Friends Group) and many volunteers hiked portions of the Gandy Dancer State Trail in Polk County Saturday, April 27, picking up seasonal trash to celebrate Earth Day 2019, the start of the 25th year of the Gandy Dancer trail and the 49th anniversary of Earth Day. This is not the first time the Gandy Dancer had a cleanup, but it is the first time the entire trail had an Earth Day trash
pickup. Trash and recyclables were collected from the trail near Danbury, Webster, Siren, St. Croix Falls, Centuria, Milltown, Luck and Frederic. In addition to finding loads of plastic bags, cans, and wrappers there were some interesting finds such as an inflatable hot tub, a toilet, tires and windshield wipers. A total of about 50 contractor size bags were filled from about 16 miles of the trail nearest the villages. About 80 people helped at var-
ious points along the 47-mile trail between St. Croix Falls and Danbury. The Gandy Dancer State Trail opened for use in the fall of 1995. It is managed with an agreement between Polk County and the trails owner, the WI DNR. The 48 miles in Polk and Burnett Counties were surfaced with crushed limestone SEE CLEANUP, PAGE 2 SUBMITTED
