It was a somewhat inauspicious beginning for Mary Hawkins (née Lee).

Mary was born premature at five pounds, so her mom, Flora Lee, kept her baby girl warm by nestling her in a shoebox in their wood stove oven. “Poor little thing, she’s not going to make it,” she said, according to family lore.

“I’m still here,” Mary quipped in an interview this week.

Indeed. On Thursday, June 4, Mary celebrates her 100th birthday. On Sunday, family and friends will gather at Hart House for lunch.

It won’t be her first time at the heritage home on the shores of Deer Lake. After all, she often used to play with the Moore kids, whose family bought it from the Harts, and her Brownie troupe used to hold its meetings there.

Mary was born at home on Percival Avenue. “It had two

rooms, an outhouse and a well.”

Any new payday loan outlets in Burnaby would require a rezoning process, including a public hearing, under proposed changes endorsed by council Monday.

The change itself will require a public hearing before it’s finalized.

The move comes in response to a February 2014 delegation to council from social justice group ACORN. The group had asked for ways city hall could control the influx of payday lenders in low-income neighbourhoods where the most vulnerable live.

“I’m pleased because we at ACORN have been working to try and prevent more payday loan operations from getting going,” said Rick Erb, co-chair of the organization’s Burnaby chapter.

“And we recognize low and moderate income citizens are affected negatively from getting into debt problems with the payday lenders.”

Erb himself was once caught in a cycle of debt caused by payday loans. “You get called a lot by collection agents and they harass you. It’s very unpleasant.”

A century later, Mary still has many memories of her childhood.

She remembers the seemingly constant haze in the air.

“There were lots of fires, people were clearing [the land].”

They’d swim in Deer Lake in the summer and skate on it in winter.

The extensive Interurban tram system was the best way to get around longer distances, but when she didn’t have money for tokens Mary used carrot slices cut to size.

Her family grew much of their own food and kept rabbits. The closest store was about a mile away and occasionally she’d be sent off alone to buy a loaf of bread or tobacco for her father’s pipe. Neither scenario would likely happen to most five-year-olds today.

High school was at the old Burnaby South secondary on Kingsway, now the Alan Emmott Centre. “I had an hour to walk to high school with a big hill to climb.”

She once tried to shave some time off her commute by cutting through the Oakalla Prison Farm.

“They didn’t like it, the alarm went off,” Mary said.

“They thought it was a prisoner escaping. I was going along the shores of the lake.

“I didn’t take that shortcut again.”

The principal at Burnaby South at the time was none other than Clifton Brown, the C.G. Brown the pool is named after.

“He called me Mabel. I said, ‘my name isn’t Mabel, it’s Mary.’ He said, ‘you look like a Mabel.’” And he kept calling her that, much to her chagrin.

In the 1930s during the Great Depression, there were protests by masses of unemployed workers. One time in Downtown Vancouver, Mary happened upon one such scene.

“The police were cracking whips. I remember I had to duck. It was quite scary.”

Mary’s talent for drawing and painting led to her earning a scholarship to the Vancouver School of Art, the precursor to what is now Emily Carr University of Art and Design. One of her classmates was none other than local art legend Jack Shadbolt.

Mary met her husband, Channing Hawkins, literally on a dare. As Mary’s daughter, Carell Goldney, 69, tells it, as a teenager, Mary was always being paired off with another fellow when invited to social gatherings. She really didn’t want to spend the rest of her life with him so her friends dared her to ask out the paper boy.

The paper boy turned out to be Channing, who was rather mortified at the invitation. Miffed, Mary said to her girlfriends, “That’s the last man in the world I ever marry.

“And he was.”

Mary said with a smile, “He was shy.”

the Sears store in Burnaby. He and Mary married and had three daughters, and it was while one was attending the parent-participation preschool at South Burnaby United Church that Mary found her forte.

All parents were expected to help out so she offered to create the sets and backdrops for the puppet theatre.

Before long, other parents would drop out and she ended up making the puppets, performing with them, writing the shows and songs —it became a one-woman show.

For the next 35 years, starting in 1954, she made a career out of it. Calling her company Fun Time Puppets, she played to groups of up to 200 people.

Oomak the Eskimo, Rascal Raven, Willy the Whale and Joey the Clown were mainstays of her shows.

“It’s nice to be able to do things you enjoy and get paid for it,” Mary said of puppeteering. “And I got paid quite well.”

Goldney recalled that as a young adult, she’d come home and hear her mom had gone off to England to perform, and even spent some time working with Jim Henson of Muppets fame in California.

Such details of her long life have faded from memory, but put one of her puppets on Mary’s hand and she can clearly sing the songs she wrote without missing a beat.

“I’m Oomak the Eskimo I like ice and snow My favourite dish Is a little fish I’m Oomak the Eskimo.”

Goldney remarked while looking through her mother’s scrapbook of newspaper clippings that the character’s name changed to the more politically correct “Oomak the Inuit” by the end of her career. Unfortunately, that meant the songs no longer rhymed.

Nevertheless, Mary retired at age 75 in 1990 to give her more time to travel.

By then, Channing had passed away in 1970. And Mary had her own bout with breast cancer in the late 1960s. But despite that, she still lives in the same home in Burnaby’s South Slope area that she bought with Channing in the 1950s.

She expressed surprise that she doesn’t feel stiff and sore like she expected she would in old age.

“I don’t feel it,” she said of her reaching the century mark. “I can’t believe I’m that old.”

Her longevity appears to be in her genes.

Her mother, Flora, lived to be 101. Her mother’s cousin died at age 105. Her older sister lived to 93. And on Sunday, luncheon guests will include cousin Audrey McArthur (née Pontifex), and Channing’s brother, George Hawkins, both aged 98.

Now also grandmother to four and great-grandmother to three, Mary doesn’t have any secrets to living a long life.

But she offers this: “I don’t spend time worrying ... I think it’s a waste of time.”

RCMP lawsuit in court Women who say they were harassed and discriminated against during their service with the RCMP are in B.C. Supreme Court this week attempting to certify a class action lawsuit against the force.

The certification hearing began Monday and the proposed class action would include 362 current and former officers and civilian employees across the country.

The case was launched in 2012 by Janet Merlo, a 19-year officer with the Nanaimo RCMP who was among the first officers to go public with allegations.

Lawyer David Klein said the common thread among the complainants is harassment, bullying and discrimination over an extended period of time.

More women would be able to join the case if a judge agrees there was a systemic problem and certifies the class action.

Carol Wang still remembers how she was introduced to the traditional art of Chinese knot-tying at age 10.

She was visiting family in Taiwan. “My college-age cousin was given the task of entertaining the 10-yearold. She gave me a book on Chinese knots and some string,” said Wang with a laugh.

“It worked. I was quiet and didn’t bother anybody.”

Now 47 and living in Burnaby, Wang is a web consultant who spends her spare time practising the craft and promoting and preserving the knowledge online. She’ll be at the Vancouver Mini Maker Faire (makerfaire.ca) at the PNE Forum this weekend, on June 6 and 7, with displays of her work and opportunities for people to try it out.

Back in Taiwan as a child, she was transfixed.

She couldn’t read Chinese, but the book had enough pictures and arrows that she figured it all out.

“I like the structure of the knots. You tie it and it looks like a great big mess, and you do a little tightening and it just falls into place, like a crystalforming kind of thing.”

It was an aspect of her Chinese heritage that she didn’t know about until then.

Indeed, for generations it was mainly an oral tradition and it wasn’t until the early 1980s that the first book was written, by Lydia Chen, or as Wang calls her, “the patron saint of decorative knotting.”

practised knot-tying and the resulting books helped revive interest in the art, Wang said.

“This is my cultural heritage. The idea that this would die because of the lack of distribution of that information was kind of offensive.”

So she decided to do her part, by starting one of the first webpages devoted to the art in the mid-1990s (chineseknotting.org).

Today, she helps keep those skills alive with her blogs (knottynotions. com and plus.google. com/+Knottynotions), by attending events such as the Maker Faire, and sharing ideas with fellow members of the UK-based International Guild of Knot Tyers and its Pacific America branch.

There are 11 basic knots and thousands of variants, Wang said. Often in Chinese culture they’re hung up in people’s homes as a good luck charm, or one wishing the owner a long life.

But at their heart, “knots are a primordial thing,” she said. People started out using them to tie pelts onto their bodies, or gourds to their waists to carry water.

They were used to make snares or nets to catch prey or fish.

“Knots are an extremely primal technology for humanity.”

Yet while lots of people tie knots every day, “it becomes more and more niche,” she said. “My kids use Velcro to tie their shoes.”

Wang stressed that her personal focus is on decorative knots. Which is why she cringes when people ask her about the more practical variety.

“If you ask me how to tie your boat to the dock, I don’t know,” she said with a sheepish laugh. “I could look it up and I could tell you and you would do what I said — and then your boat would drift away and you’d be upset.” twitter.com/WandaChow

Port Metro Vancouver not seeking to ship LNG through the Fraser River A recent article described documents obtained by activists as evidence Port Metro Vancouver intends to ship LNG through the Fraser River.

To be clear, as a federally-mandated port authority, our role is to ensure whatever Canada, or the province, wishes to ship through the port is done so efficiently and safely.

We do not determine what goods are traded, nor do we decide government trade policy. We were asked by the provincial government to look into the future and recommend the height for the proposed bridge to replace the

George Massey Tunnel.

This information was needed to properly plan for the long term, and required us to anticipate the largest vessels that could reasonably travel up the Fraser, given its restricted width and depth.

We provided dimensions for LNG ships due to the province’s interest in this industry and because these vessels, along with cruise ships, require the most vertical clearance. As to what is eventually traded on the river — that is up to others to decide.

Clarifying LNG facts I am writing to respond to information published in a recent article regarding Woodfibre LNG. Woodfibre LNG Limited is proposing to build a liquefied natural gas processing and export facility at the site of a former pulp mill, about seven km from Squamish, B.C. If our project is approved and built, it would bring an LNG carrier along established shipping lanes in Howe Sound about three to four times each month, not twice per day as suggested in the article.

These LNG carriers are designed for the safe transport of LNG, including complex containment systems and double-hull protection.

In fact, in the more than 50 years LNG has been shipped around the world, there has never been a recorded incident involving a loss of containment of an LNG carrier at sea.

In addition, each LNG

carrier arriving at the Woodfibre LNG terminal will be escorted by at least three tugboats, one of which will be tethered, and piloted by two BC Coast Pilots who are experts on our coast.

TB Reach funds new, innovative ideas for fighting one of the world’s oldest diseases, whereas the Global Fund needs strong evidence that a certain approach works before they can support it. Dr. Mark Dybul, the ED of the Global Fund wrote a letter to the Honourable Christian Paradis stating why the Global Fund needs TB Reach to keep running and why. TB Reach needs a mere $120 million over the next five years to stay in the business of reaching the hardest to reach TB patients. This is, relatively speaking, a small amount and will still keep Canada well below Lester Pearson’s recommended seven per cent of GDP for international aid funding.

Burnaby RCMP offer tips to reduce break-ins The highest percentage of break-ins happen during the summer months, so as we all enjoy the warmer weather, the Burnaby RCMP would like to remind residents to keep doors and windows locked when leaving your homes.

“Our investigators and crime analysts identify patterns and monitor break-in activity throughout Burnaby’s four districts,” said Sgt. Stephane

Brossard who leads the detachment’s Strike Force, a unit dedicated to identifying those responsible for robberies and break and enters. “As we enter the summer months, we often see a rise in residential break-ins because people are tempted to keep their windows, doors and garages open.”

Burnaby RCMP is committed to ensuring residents are as safe as possible and are passing on

five top tips to the public to help reduce the incidents of break-ins this summer.

• Increase deterrents: use an alarm system, add a security motion detector or surveillance camera.

• Decrease opportunity: if you are away make plans to have your mail and newspapers picked up; don’t post travel plans on social media; lock and put away valuables such as bicycles and

lawn mowers and always leave ladders secured.

• Secure access points: close and lock windows/doors when you are away. Ensure your garage is locked even if you’re in the back garden. Lock and secure sheds.

• Keys: No matter how tempted you might be, never hide a key under a door mat.

• Answer your door or make a noise: Thieves often knock

on a door or ring a doorbell to target homes they believe are unattended. If no one answers, they will break in so indicate you are at home. If you are concerned about answering the door, indicate you are home by turning up your music or television set, asking them to state what they want, or if it’s in the evening, turn on the outside light.

It’s been a pretty eventful dozen years since Stuart Leamy joined the Canadian army straight out of high school.

He’s served with the Canadian Scottish Regiment in the infantry on the front lines in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

He returned to Kabul in that country to advise officers and train new recruits in the Afghanistan national army.

He planned to be a full-time soldier.

But when he injured his shoulder and faced having to make a career change, now that was a stressful time.

Normally, Leamy would have to start from square one, like he was 18 again.

He felt lost.

“I don’t think I would have had the courage to actually go back and do school,” he says today.

Thankfully, B.C. Institute of Technology provided a better option.

Since 2009, the BCIT Legion Military Skills Conversion Program has helped 400 former and current members of the Canadian military transition to civilian careers.

And it’s set to help many more nationwide.

The federal Minister of Employment and Social Development Pierre Poilievre recently announced $830,000 in funding to launch the BCIT program nationwide, expanding it to post-secondary institutions across Canada.

The key to the program is the students

are given academic credits for their military experience and advice on what civilian jobs their military skills could apply well to.

“The kind of skills you learn in the military are very relevant,” said Leamy.

“They just need to be geared toward a civilian application.”

In his case, he’s decided to pursue a career in human resources. He completed a post diploma and is on track to earn a bachelor of business administration degree.

In the case of the diploma, he was given a full year’s credit, and for his BBA, he qualified for several electives credits. It saved him about two years of schooling.

Leamy, who now serves in the reserves with the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada, noted that the program is highly structured which is “perfect for people in the military.”

Giving students direction on what sorts of career options to pursue is also a huge relief.

And BCIT officials understand what such students have done in the military, what they’re capable of, and the challenges they face in making that transition to civilian life, he said.

The news the program will be expanded is “amazing,” he said.

“Especially for people who joined at a very young age like 18, 17, they spent 10-plus years in the military then all of a sudden they have to leave for whatever reason … it’s hard for people to get their bearings again,” Leamy said. “Because honestly, they left right after high school and that’s all they’ve really known in their adult life. Maywood students get free dental exams Among those helped by annual Tooth Trolley event Wanda Chow

About 30 students from Burnaby’s Maywood elementary got a free trip to the dentist recently, thanks to the ninth annual Tooth Trolley event.

They were among the more than 200 kids to be helped through the program, which is funded

by Chevron Canada with transportation provided by the Vancouver Trolley Company.

The children were taken to Vancouver Community College’s (VCC) downtown dental clinic where students in the certified dental assistant (CDA) program and local dentists provided free dental check-ups.

Participating elementary students are generally from families with low incomes, who are immigrants or not familiar with dental care and its importance at a young age, said Margaret Dennett, CDA instructor at VCC and co-coordinator of the event.

“There’s still the belief that with primary teeth you

don’t really have to look after them because you’re going to lose them anyway.”

That’s a misperception, Dennett explained. “If a tooth decays it becomes infected and that infection can affect the overall health, but can also affect the new tooth that’s coming in.”

And if those baby teeth are lost too early, the permanent teeth could emerge in the wrong place, creating a need for expensive orthodontic treatment.

The students’ teeth were examined, cleaned, treated

with fluoride and coated in a sealant to protect them from decay in the meantime.

In addition to providing a fun experience for the children, their parents received education on oral health, including tips on nutrition.

Dennett said one mom was giving baby formula to her five and eight-year-olds in the mistaken belief it was the most nutritious choice. Not only is that very expensive, there are other foods that would be better for children that age, she said.

“This gives them the teeny tiny mouths and the realization that oh, not everyone can open as wide as I would like them to and not everyone can stay

Qian’s not so sure there should be a one-deviceopens-all approach. There are security concerns, for one, and a wide array of door manufacturers to contend with.

The meeting between the two men might not result in the development of a universal remote control door-opener any time soon, but it did lead to another connection to future possibilities. At Mulberry Parc, Qian was introduced to a volunteer who told him about the G.F. Strong Rehabilitation Centre in Vancouver. Qian is interested in volunteering there so he can get a better sense of what devices people need to make life easier. In the meantime, his short-term goal is a bit more prosaic — finding a summer job that he can fit around the courses he’s taking to prepare for the Master’s program in mechatronic product realization.

Wayne Mackie wants to open doors for Joseph Qian so Joseph Qian can find a way to open doors for him with the push of a button.

The 80-year-old Mulberry Parc resident read about Qian in a recent edition of the Burnaby NewsLeader.

Qian immigrated to Vancouver from Shanghai in 2009, but was finding it hard to find a job that tapped into his combined passions for engineering and design.

Qian’s hoping that a new Master’s program at SFU this fall will give him the Canadian credentials he needs to pursue his dream of creating devices that will help the disabled and seniors.

Ah ha, thought Mackie — Qian was just the man to turn Mackie’s idea for a universal remote control door-opener into a marketable product. He contacted Qian through the NewsLeader and the two have met a couple of times.

“The idea is to open

doors for him,” Mackie says. He wants to help Qian find a job as much as he wants Qian to work out a way to make the device.

“To find a manufacturer willing to do this is not so easy,” says Qian, after listening to Mackie describe a fob-like device that could automatically open doors at Mackie’s bank, for instance, and control who gets access to handicapped washrooms.

“However,” Qian adds, not wanting to dash Mackie’s hopes, “to develop this product involves technology which is feasible.”

Mackie knows what it’s like to return to school later in life. After a career in radio and the navy, he graduated from law school in 1980 at the age of 45.

During his studies, he had to do a paper on how public buildings should be made accessible to all residents. Thirty-five years ago, there was resistance to the idea, but look at how commonplace the notion is today, he says. Likewise, he believes that one day it will be automatically easy for

When students and staff of Burnaby South saw the devastating images of the earthquake in Nepal, they were motivated to do something — to make a difference.

History has shown that the South community has always been very generous.

Students and staff in the past raised nearly $14,000 for the earthquake in Haiti, raised $5,000 for the Rebel Food program — and now came together to raise more than $10,000 for the earthquake victims in Nepal.

The two-week Nepal in Need campaign (from May 4 to 15) organized by WE Council, one of South’s charitable clubs affiliated with Free the Children, included

many of the school’s clubs and councils, leadership, and athletic teams sponsoring different fundraisers during lunch hours, and collecting in class and during evening music performances.

An appeal was also launched directly to parents using the school website and the local community was encouraged to donate in order to meet the federal government’s deadline of doubling all funds raised by Canadians who donated by May 25.

A cheque for $10,652.74 was presented to Jennifer Wong of the Canadian Red Cross on May 21 by members of WE council and school principal LeeAnne Kristmanson.

SFU bookstores bid for Bitcoin buyers Tyler Orton

Students at Simon Fraser University (SFU) looking to buy books for the summer semester have one more payment option available to them.

Simon Fraser University unveiled three Bitcoin ATMs — or automated vending machines (AVMs) — May 26 at campus bookstores in Burnaby, Surrey and downtown Vancouver.

Mike Yeung, founder of the SFU Bitcoin club, said this is the first time he knows of a Canadian university partnering up with an AVM supplier to get the machines installed on campus.

The student union at the B.C. Institute of Technology (BCIT) installed a machine on its Burnaby campus a year ago. And Yeung hopes by getting the SFU administration involved officially, the AVMs will eventually spread beyond the bookstores and catch on with students still unsure about using cryptocurrency.

“A lot of them are quite curious and unfortunately, there isn’t at this time too many ways for them to get their hands on bitcoins,” he told Business in Vancouver.

“And even if they get them, they don’t know how to spend them.”

Yeung worked with SFU Ancillary Services for about a year to get AVMs from Toronto’s BitSent installed at the bookstores.

The outlets have been equipped with iPads that can accept the virtual currency and staff have been trained to help students use the AVMs. While banks’ ATMs conjure up images of people swiping banking cards to withdraw cash, people will use the AVMs to purchase bitcoins with cash.

Before doing so, they must have a Bitcoin wallet — similar to an email address — linked to their smartphones.

The AVM machine then scans a QR code on the smartphone that links to the Bitcoin wallet and allow users to buy the cryptocurrency with cash they insert in the machine.

Students are then able to purchase

products at the bookstore using their bitcoins, just as they would with a debit card or cash.

Banks and ATM providers typically pay retail outlets a fee to have their machine installed on a property.

Yeung said SFU and BitSent reached an agreement where students will be charged to buy bitcoins from the machine, while the school and the AVM provider split the profit.

Bitcoin’s value is derived from its limited supply, usefulness and its peerto-peer payment system that requires no transaction fees between merchants and consumers.

This stands in contrast to debit and

credit card companies that charge merchants fees when customers use those options to make payments.

“If people adopt Bitcoin, and try it out and use it more often, one of the benefits is that the retailer can opt to make a discount for people making purchases in Bitcoin,” Yeung said.

He’s still working with SFU to expand the Bitcoin ecosystem, which could include making food and coffee purchases across other campus businesses sometime in the near future.

“Once that expands a little bit, there will be opportunities, perhaps, to cut down on prices for retail purchases.”

SFU Ancillary Services executive director Mark McLaughlin told Business in Vancouver he wants to take a “phased approach” to expanding Bitcoin on campus.

“Our plan at this point is to expand it to other retail locations on campus, namely dining services, the restaurants, over the course of the next year,” he said.

As for the profit-splitting arrangement, McLaughlin said the school isn’t looking to make money off students who buy bitcoins. Rather, the “minimal” commission it brings in mostly just covers the cost of the machine’s electricity bill.

“Bitcoin is really considered the cash of the Internet, so we want to give our students an opportunity to try it firsthand.”

Emissions, revenue down at Burnaby garbage incinerator Waste-to-energy plant completes pollution control upgrade Jeff Nagel

Metro Vancouver’s garbage incinerator has cut its emissions by 53 per cent since completing a major pollution control upgrade over the past year.

The $7-million retrofit by plant operator Covanta means the plant’s nitrogen oxides emissions now make up 0.4 per cent of the total in the region, down from 0.8 per cent.

That’s just over one third of the emissions allowed under the current limit set by the provincial government, according to Metro.

The plant is still awaiting a new operating certificate from the environment ministry — Metro’s application for one was challenged by the Fraser Valley Regional District, which demanded tougher pollution controls and testing.

The waste-to-energy plant is also reporting a major drop in revenue in

2014.

It took in nearly $5.5 million from selling electricity, but that’s down from $7.4 million in 2013.

Power generation was offline for part of the year because of repairs to a failed turbine blade, and a new electricity purchase deal is now in effect with BC Hydro that pays Metro lower prices than before.

The earnings picture for the Burnaby wasteto-energy plant, run by Covanta, has deteriorated since 2010, when it took in a combined total of $11 million from selling electricity to the grid and steam to an adjacent industrial plant that has since shut down.

It also grappled with higher operating costs in 2014 to truck fly ash to Alberta because some loads had failed cadmium tests for B.C. landfill disposal.

Metro officials say the plant remains by far the most cost-effective method of disposing of garbage, compared to using the Vancouver Landfill or trucking it to the Cache Creek Landfill, which the region wants to stop using in favour of a new wasteto-energy plant.

Metro solid waste manager Paul Henderson said the disposal cost is about half the amount per tonne to haul waste inland and dump it at Cache Creek.

The existing incinerator burns about 285,000 tonnes of garbage a year and a new one – if approved – could take another 370,000 tonnes.

In 2014, the net cost of WTE disposal was $60.53 per tonne, with more than $80 per tonne in operating and debt costs reduced by nearly $20 a tonne in revenue. That net cost has nearly doubled from $33.30 per tonne in 2010 due to the rising costs and falling revenue.

The revenue doesn’t count tipping fees Metro collects from haulers that dump there.

Translink to fund roadworks TransLink is funding $6.3 million in roadworks and bike trails in Burnaby this year.

Of that, $5.7 million is for operations, maintenance and rehabilitation of roads on major arterials designated as part of the region’s Major Road Network, according to TransLink.

The work is planned and carried out by municipalities with each city receiving TransLink funding according to the number of kilometres of the MRN that are located within the community.

The transportation authority is also providing $560,800 as its 50 per cent share of capital costs for the Gilmore Urban Trail section in Burnaby of the Sea to River Bikeway.

A roomy cabin, combined with enhanced NVH properties so road noises are kept at bay make for a serene environment.

Its electric power-assisted rack and pinion steering (EPS) move the Fit in and out of tight spots with ease and little effort. Though at highway speeds, you still feel connected to the car.

Its charm extends much further than its practical characteristics. The Fit is a joy to drive and has flair in the looks department. Overall, the Fit fits well with me and I’m very happy about that.

London Drugs and Terracycle partner on pilot project Residents in Burnaby and New Westminster can do some spring cleaning while also helping out a good cause.

New drop boxes have been installed at 78 London Drugs stores across Western Canada allowing customers to recycle home cleaning waste — such as trigger heads, flip-top caps and wipes packaging — for the first time.

Once full, the boxes will be picked up by UPS and shipped to TerraCycle, an independent recycling agency specializing in diverting from landfill what municipalities deem “non-recyclable.”

“We have seen a number of great successes in our partnership with TerraCycle, and we are proud to be able to expand upon the types of items our customers can recycle,” said Maury McCausland, retail operations sustainability specialist at London Drugs.

“This program is a natural extension to our Bring Back the Pack and What’s the Green Deal? programs, so we expect to see great engagement from those who are dedicated to diverting waste from our landfills.”

The Air and Home Care Brigade rewards collectors with two cents for each item of waste shipped to TerraCycle; the money can be put toward a charity, nonprofit or school. This popular method of fundraising-via-recycling is unique to TerraCycle and applies to the London Drugs pilot program as well — all money raised from customer drop-offs will be

Making camp possible for Burnaby families Up to 40 Burnaby children from economically disadvantaged homes will be going to the arts or active living summer camp of their choice, thanks to a $6,900 grant from Westminster Savings.

The funding is part of the 2015 Camping Bureau from the Burnaby Community Services Society, which hopes to send a total of 350 kids to camp in 2015.

According to the

Burnaby Community Services Society, almost 20 per cent of Burnaby households have incomes below $20,000, primarily due to factors such as unemployment, lack of high school graduation, single-parenthood, recent immigration, and a high percentage of income spent on housing. Children subsidized for camp include troubled youth, newcomers, children from single parent families and those with physical or

developmental disabilities or teen mothers.

“Summer camp allows a child to explore a world beyond their own neighbourhood, make new friends, develop new skills, and build self-esteem,” said Stephen D’Souza, executive director of Burnaby Community Services.

“For children from lowincome families, camp is a chance to see beyond their immediate circumstances and to experience new opportunities.”

The merchants of Burnaby Heights are going Hollywood this Saturday for the 31st annual Hats Off Day Festival. The day will be filled with food, entertainment and fun for the whole family.

Hats Off Day festival goes to Hollywood Lights, camera, action — Hats Off Day is back for the 31st year with a Hollywoodthemed day of fun.

This Saturday, June 6, the Burnaby Heights merchants are taking their hats off to customers and the community in a huge, oneday extravaganza, featuring a colourful parade and street party.

“Hats Off Day is Burnaby’s favourite festival and we expect more than 60,000 visitors to take over Hastings in a massive street party,” explains Isabel Kolic, executive director of the Heights Merchants Association, the leading host of the event.

Hats Off Day starts with its annual pancake breakfast at 8:30 a.m., hosted by Burnaby Community Connections and sponsored by Community Savings Credit Union.

At 9:30 a.m., the Family Fun Dash begins with a three-block race promoting

activity, family, and fun.

There is a $5 entry fee per family team and all proceeds from the dash benefit the Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Society.

After the kids cross the finish line, a colourful main-street style parade kicks off the festival at 10 a.m.

Tourism Burnaby T-shirts help feed families Tourism Burnaby’s latest initiative launches this Saturday, June 6th at the annual Hat’s Off Day Festival in The Heights.

The project involves selling trendy T-shirts and tank tops that feature a graphic of Burnaby and its many neighbourhoods by donation at various annual events throughout the summer, including Hats Off Day, Burnaby Blues & Roots Festival and Livenation’s Deer Lake Concert Series.

The goal of the project is to promote awareness of Burnaby and the many neighbourhoods that make up the community.

“Burnaby is evolving,” said Nancy Small, executive director of Tourism Burnaby. “It has more to offer than just proximity to Vancouver.

They may be between the ages of 10 and 12, but in soccer, they’re not too young to play for Team Canada.

The Danone Nations Cup, the world’s largest U12 soccer tournament, held its B.C. provincial tryouts at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex recently to recruit players for its Western Canada Team. More than 50 kids turned out to showcase their skills, and they proved to be quite impressive to the judges.

“The level of the sessions in B.C. were the best sessions we saw across Canada,” said Dean Howie, head coach of the Canadian team. “I think it speaks volumes for the amount of work that’s done at the club level the amount of work being done by the Whitecaps and the academies. It’s fantastic.”

Every year, 2.5 million kids try out to compete on one of 32 national teams, in hopes of winning the Danone Nations Cup. This year’s final, scheduled for October, is taking place in Morocco.

Howie, who has been coaching Canada’s team for about 15 years, said the tournament gives young athletes an opportunity to believe in their dreams — and with any luck, make them come true on the field.

“When we work with older athletes and with national team athletes and provincial team athletes, I think we all get caught up in the politics of the game, the selection process, budgets, things like that,” he said. “The opportunity with the Danone Nations Cup for me as a coach permits me to see the game and kids who still hold it pure in their heart.

“It’s amazing to watch

this enthusiasm and passion for the game.”

Howie noted a number of prominent soccer stars have risen up through the Danone Nations Cup, including Toronto FC full back Ashtone Morgan.

He said the timing with the FIFA Women’s World Cup, being held across Canada from June 6 to July 5, is important as Canada is the only country in the DNC that brings girls into the tournament.

“We have a mixed team and we’re the only country that does that,” he said.

“We’re really proud about that — I think that speaks to the inclusiveness of Canada.”

Last weekend the Western Canadian team was selected with Burnaby’s Niko Sigur earning a spot.

The kids selected from across the country will be sent to Montreal later in June for a training camp, in which they’ll also get

to watch a quarter-final World Cup game.

The Western Canadian team will play against the Eastern Canadian team on June 27 at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium to determine which team will represent the country in the cup.

With any luck, Team Canada will make it far in the DNC. Howie said the tournament is great not just for how it challenges young soccer players, but how it opens them up to other parts of the world.

“The kids will deal with different cultures, meeting different teams, different styles of play, and I think that’s good for their growth in the game,” he said. “We hope that every kid that was there, every player, that we reinforce that dream of playing for Canada and representing the maple leaf on the field at the World Cup stage or at the qualification stage.”

The BC Sports Hall of Fame inducted the 2012 Canadian Olympic Women’s Soccer team and its B.C. members including Burnaby’s Christine Sinclair at the 47th annual Banquet of Champions on May 28 in Vancouver.

After overcoming a controversial semifinal loss to the U.S., Team Canada won a dramatic bronze medal in London beating France 1-0 on a late goal.

This marked Canada’s first medal in a traditional summer team sport since 1936.

Sinclair, captain of the Canadian team, finished as the tournament’s top scorer with six goals.

B.C. team members also included: Karina LeBlanc (Maple Ridge), Sophie Schmidt (Abbotsford), Brittany Timko (Coquitlam) and Emily Zurrer (Crofton).

Sinclair could not attend the ceremony as she and her Team Canada teammates were in Hamilton preparing for a friendly with England prior to the start of the Women’s World Cup on June 6.

But Timko was on hand to represent the team.

“On behalf of the girls on the 2012 Olympic Team we would like to thank the BC Sports Hall of Fame for this huge honour,” said Timko. “I’m so proud to be here tonight on behalf of the girls. We’d

Burnaby Girls Soccer Club part of Women’s World Cup Ian Jacques

Two players from the Burnaby Girls Soccer Club will be on the sidelines of BC Place at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. It’s a chance of a lifetime for the soon to be nineyear-old players who will represent their club among the 50-plus clubs across Canada who have been selected to participate in the FIFA Youth Programme.

The programme highlights the importance FIFA places on enabling children to connect with the sport from an early age by inviting them

to participate in the competition as a member of the player escort team, ball crew or as a flag bearer.

The player escorts have the opportunity to walk hand-in-hand with the players on to the pitch, and stand alongside them during their national anthems. Ball crew members are responsible for ensuring one ball is kept in play for as long as possible during the course of the match, which is a critical role for maintaining the flow of the game.

“Our club has had the opportunity over the years to host and be involved

with many players from the national team,” said Burnaby Girls Soccer Club president Tom Berry.

“Christine [Sinclair] played with our club of course, but these opportunities never get old. The two girls are pretty excited about the opportunity. It’s a big deal for them to be out on the turf of BC Place and the thousands of fans who will be there on that particular day.”

Clubs in all six official host cities — Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montreal and Moncton have been given the opportunity to be a part of the program.

The man who helped Simon Fraser University become the first, and only, Canadian school to compete in the NCAA is leaving the school.

Milton Richards has resigned as SFU’s senior director of athletics and recreation.

Richards joined SFU in November, 2011, and by the following September the NCAA had approved its full membership in the Great Northwest Athletic

Conference. The school’s sports teams had competed for the previous two years as provisional members which allowed them to play for conference championships but they couldn’t compete for national championships.

During that time several SFU track and field athletes won GNAC championships and the men’s soccer team won two conference titles.

“Milt played an integral

role in helping SFU achieve its goal of full membership in NCAA Division II as the only international university competing in the NCAA,” said Tim Rahilly, the school’s associate vice president, students.

Richards will officially end his responsibility for SFU’s 17 varsity teams and 400 student athletes on July 2. The school will search internationally for his replacement.

Burnaby Lakers’ goalie Graham Husick returned to Queen’s Park Arena Tuesday to haunt his former team.

And while Husick, who was acquired from the New Westminster Salmonbellies last Friday, came up on the short end of the 8-3 score in their BC Junior A Lacrosse League game, he likely won a ton of respect and admiration from his new teammates as he allowed those goals on a barrage of 61 shots.

The Lakers, who have only one win in 12 games, almost matched the fourth-place Bellies stride for stride through the game’s first two periods, trailing 4-3 heading into the third.

But the home team wrested control of the game in the final frame. They scored four unanswered goals and fired 22 shots at Husick, while the Lakers managed only seven shots at New West keeper Tyler Landry.

The Salmonbellies seemed on their way to an easy win over the last-place Lakers when Alex Bohl scored on a breakaway less than two minutes into the game after he picked up a loose ball just inside his own blue line and sprinted away from pursuing defenders.

But time and again Husick turned away Bellies shooters while his own mates repeatedly let the shot clock run out at the other end.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Eileen Coulson. Eileen was born on September 20th, 1926 in New Westminster, B.C. to William and Agnes Hutchinson.

She was the third of four children, pre-deceased by her parents, older brothers Bruce and Gilbert, and her younger sister, Doreen. Eileen is also predeceased by her loving husband George Allan (Al) Coulson and son Dave. She is survived by her sons Bob (DeeDee), Barry (Debbie), Ron (Carol), daughterin-law Sandra, grandchildren Gavin and Kimberly, Michael and Rachel, Christopher and

Rebekah, and Suzanne and Stuart. Eileen married the love of her life, Al, in June of 1948, and raised 4 sons in the Royal City. She was a hard-working

woman who was engaged in her community through the Hyack Festival Association, and other civic groups. She was a telephone operator with the former BC Tel, spent many years with Woodward’s Department Store,

and had many friendships she cultivated through the years.

Eileen loved to laugh, engage in family events and dinners, and was especially proud of her sons, their wives, and her 8 grandchildren. A celebration of Eileen’s life will be held at Glenbrook Amenities’ Centre, 76 Jamieson Court, New Westminster on Friday, June 5th, from

Amrik Singh Pooni, of New Westminster, BC, passed away suddenly on May 30, 2015 in New Westminster.

Amrik was born in Jindowal, Punjab, India to Kabal Singh and Tarsem Kaur Pooni on August 5, 1941. He graduated from Khalsa High School. After working on the family farm for several years, he left India in search of a new home and future for his wife and infant daughter. He established himself in Burnaby and was later joined by his young family.

Over the next few years, his family expanded to include his two sons. After working for Fraser Mills for several years, his entrepreneurial spirit emerged and he started his trucking business, A. Pooni Trucking. After a successful 35 years of entrepreneurial life, he reluctantly settled into retirement in New Westminster. Never one to sit idle, he called upon his early farming experience and became renowned for his phenomenal vegetable and flower gardens, woodworking skills and indulgence of his grandchildren. He would often be found walking amongst neighborhood parks of in search of inspiration.

He is very loved and will be missed.

Amrik is preceded in death by his parents. Amrik is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years Harbhajan, his loving children Jagrup & Harinder, Gary & Mina and Sonny & Darseen, and his 7 adoring and adored grandchildren Kyle, Tyler, Paul, Neil, Tage, Ethan and (Princess) Saphia, 2 sisters & brothers-in-law, 2 brothers & sisters-in-law, many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.

Funeral services will be held at Riverside Funeral Home, 7410 Hopcott Rd, Delta, BC on Saturday June 6, 2015 at 3:00pm followed by prayer at Gurdwara Nanak Niwas 8600 No. 5 Road, Richmond.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Amrik S. Pooni and Family Bursary, Simon Fraser University.

Commercial Trailer/Transport Mechanics (Surrey Terminal) Van-Kam Freightways requires two full-time Commercial Trailer Journeyman Mechanics and a full-time Commercial Transport Journeyman Mechanic to work out of our Surrey terminal located at 10155 Grace Road. The Transport Mechanic position would work the 11:30 pm to 8:00 am shift.

Applicants should have an inspectors ticket, a minimum of 2 years of related experience, a positive attitude and able to work in a team environment. Experience in a freight fleet environment would be preferred as this is a busy facility providing service to a large fleet of Company Owned Trucks and Trailers.
