Whether you’re here for the short sprint of 7 miles or the marathon journey of 67 miles, safety is our top priority to ensure a fun and injury-free experience for everyone. Follow these essential safety tips to keep your ride smooth and enjoyable:
Gear Up: Before you hit the road, make sure your bike is in tip-top shape Check your brakes, tires, and gears. Don’t forget your helmet—it’s not just a safety device; it’s a lifesaver.
Know Your Route: Familiarize yourself with your chosen path beforehand. Each route offers its own set of challenges and scenic views, so knowing what to expect can help you prepare mentally and physically Keep a map or GPS device handy in case you stray from the path
Stay Hydrated and Energized: The excitement of the ride can make it easy to forget about hydration and nutrition. Carry water and energy-boosting snacks, especially for the longer routes. Remember, staying energized is key to enjoying the ride from start to finish.
Ride in Groups: There’s safety in numbers Try to stick with a group that matches your pace Not only does it make for a safer ride, but it’s also more fun to share the experience with fellow cycling enthusiasts.
Obey Traffic Laws: Our routes may cross roads and intersections where local traffic laws must be respected Signal your turns, stop at stop signs, and always give way to pedestrians
Be Weather Wise: Check the weather forecast before setting off Johnson County is known for its beauty in all conditions, but being prepared for the unexpected will keep you comfortable and safe.
Emergency Preparedness: Carry a small repair kit for unexpected bike repairs and have your phone fully charged Know the emergency contact numbers provided by the tour organizers and have them readily accessible
Respect the Environment: Keep Johnson County beautiful by not littering. Carry out what you carry in, and stay on marked paths to preserve the natural habitats.
Listen to Your Body: Choose the route that matches your fitness level There's no shame in taking it easy or picking a shorter route if it means you’ll have a safer, more enjoyable ride
In the picturesque town of Burleson, Bobby Woolard, the nowretired jeweler formerly at the helm of Woolard Jewelry, reminisces about the days when the open road called to him, not through the roar of an engine, but through the quiet whir of bicycle tires.
According to the Cleburne TimesReview, Woolard's journey into the world of cycling began in the late 1980s, a passion kindled by his then-girlfriend, now his wife, Caryl. It was a shared interest that not only brought them closer but also introduced Woolard to a community of like-minded enthusiasts. In the mid-1990s, with the spirit of a
pioneer, he proposed the idea of the Honey Tour to the Burleson chamber, marking the beginning of what would become a steadily growing interest in cycling within the community.
Woolard observed the expanding appeal of cycling over the years, advocating for the sport as not just a means to fitness but as a unique way to connect with the outdoors. "Cycling allows you to experience the world in a way that's simply not possible when you're enclosed in a vehicle or even jogging," Woolard shared. "There's something about covering ground on two wheels that offers a perspective both intimate and expansive."
For Bobby and Caryl Woolard, cycling was never about the pursuit of speed or setting records. Their approach to riding was more contemplative, seeking out the solitude and beauty of the roads less traveled. They found joy in the simplicity of being outdoors, the companionship of fellow cyclists, and the freedom to explore far from the hustle of city life.
"There's a certain tranquility in being able to clear your mind, with nothing but the sound of your tires on the pavement for company," Woolard reflected. "It's a form of
escapism, a way to find peace and enjoyment in the simplest of pleasures."
Woolard's story is a testament to the transformative power of cycling, not just as a physical activity but as a way to forge deeper connections with nature, with others, and with oneself. His encouragement to those yet to discover the joys of cycling is a reminder of the adventures that await on the open road.
Every year, Woolard Jewelry created and donated a gold-and-diamond bicycle pendant to help promote the
bike ride. Bobby Woolard marks the routes of the Honey Tour Bike Ride every year, ensuring riders know which roads to follow.
This year’s carnival will be at the Chisenhall Sports Complex. The event, with free parking and admission, will celebrate the fun, festive, family atmosphere that is Burleson with live music featuring a variety of bands. Throughout the event attendees can enjoy novelty entertainment, carnival rides, arts & crafts vendors, two entertainment stages, food, and plenty of FUN for all!
