Forest Family Dental Gives Back in a Unique Way
Written By DAWN KAHL
Typically, when we highlight a practice that contributes to its community, it's about donating time. However, this practice is giving back in a unique way —through fresh garden produce!
Dr . Matthew Williams, a local resident, has owned his practice in Marysville, WA, for 13 years . Growing up in Lake Stevens and attending the University of Washington, he has deep roots in the area . It's only natural that he wants to give back to his community, especially since his practice philosophy is 'Rooted in Kindness '
“We always want to make sure that we're putting our patients first. And we wanted to just celebrate our surroundings &
the Pacific Northwest,” he explains.
Every year he and his team sit down and reassess priorities and resolutions At the end of 2023, as a practice, they decided they wanted an opportunity to be able to give back to the community .
“I feel like when you have this platform, it's something where we can rally as a team to really help people out.”
Between their desire to help the Marysville Food Bank, their love of gardening, and their desire not to have to mow their small lawn, they discovered the Giving Gardens program on the food bank’s website . They now have a raised garden bed out in front of their office . Patients or visitors can donate a seed packet based on the list of requested vegetables . The team plants, waters, harvests, and drops off the grown produce to the food bank on their behalf
The program was an immediate success, selling out all their rows in just two days .
“I was really surprised at how many patients were very excited about it. And it's been a super fun program for us.”
They’ve had success growing all the vegetables except one “We had some trouble with the beets We had to grow beets because that was a specific preference from the food bank, but we didn't do so well with those . We're in our trial-and-error process here, but I think we're going to nail it down as we go along .”
According to Michelle Eno, Assistant Director of Marysville Community Food Bank, the Giving Gardens Program has been running for over a decade . They received a total of 12,898 lbs . of donated homegrown produce in 2024 (since the first donation on March 29th) .
Dr . Williams has been a Burkhart client since 2017 and enjoys a close partnership with Account Manager Niki Allan, who has also donated to the garden
“Niki & Burkhart donated cabbage because that was one that the Marysville Food Bank specifically requested. It's growing nicely, and we'll be ready to harvest that soon.”
Due to the interest in the program, the team is already planning to expand the size of the garden to help the food bank even more — just as long as it’s not beets!

We want to recognize our clients who demonstrate exceptional giving in their communities. If you know a dental office/team you would like featured in Catalyst or on social media, please contact Marketing at Marketing@BurkhartDental.com.

Important Safety Information
Care should be taken to avoid accidental intravascular injection, which may be associated with convulsions followed by coma and respiratory arrest. Local anesthetic solutions that contain a vasoconstrictor should be used cautiously, especially in patients with impaired cardiovascular function or vascular disease. Administration of Burkhart Dental Anesthetic results in a 3 to 5-fold increase in plasma epinephrine concentrations compared to baseline. However, in healthy adults, it does not appear to be associated with marked increases in blood pressure or heart rate, except in the case of accidental intravascular injection. The most common adverse reactions (incidence >2%) are headache and pain. Inform patients in advance of the possibility of temporary loss of sensation and muscle function following infiltration and nerve block injections. Instruct patients not to eat or drink until normal sensation returns.
1. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends using the lowest possible quantity of epinephrine (Kaplan EL ed. Cardiovascular disease in dental practice. Dallas, TX: American Heart Association, 1986) 1.800.562.8176

Take
the stress out of dental supplies with Burkhart’s Supply Savings Guarantee
Dr. Eric Wenzel never has to think about how much he’s spending on practice supplies. His Burkhart Account Manager Kevin Hersom, does that for him.
Dr . Wenzel first began working with Burkhart Dental Supply about 15 years ago, and the Supply Savings Guarantee was one of the perks that convinced him to switch to the supplier . He knows Kevin will work to ensure his supply costs never exceed a certain percentage of his gross production, and if they do, Burkhart will write him a check to cover the difference .
His Account Manager, Kevin, lets him know about special deals and private-label products that may be less expensive than what he’s using and also manages their inventory to make sure the practice orders the right amount of product each month—
all to ensure he never overspends on supplies “I don’t have to worry about opening up my supply closet and having expired product or too much of something,” said Dr . Wenzel, who practices in Bellingham, WA .
“It naturally streamlines the whole process. I don’t have too much or too little; everything is just right, and it’s all in relation to my production. So, I’m not getting taken advantage of—it’s guaranteed.”
One benefit of the Supply Savings Guarantee, Dr . Wenzel said, is that vendors outside of Burkhart are part of the guarantee, too .
“It includes everything, which I thought was pretty amazing,” he said . “We review everything quarterly and determine what Burkhart needs to do and what I need to do to meet the goal . It’s also an opportunity for them to let me know about other services they offer, which I have taken advantage of over the years, such as the Practice Analysis (through Burkhart’s Practice Support Team) ”
Early on, there were a few times Dr . Wenzel didn’t quite meet his goal and, true to their word, Burkhart wrote him a check . He never even had to ask for it . Then, they got to work to find more ways to save him money .
can bounce ideas off . If there’s ever an issue with an order, I can easily return it . I also use Burkhart to purchase large equipment, so even though it’s a different department, I can reach out to my rep if I have an issue and find out who to talk to or how to get the issue addressed ”
Burkhart offers various services, such as Fee Analysis, which takes a deep look into how a practice’s fees stack up against industry standards and location .
They also are quick to fix any problems or answer equipment-related questions, Dr . Wenzel said . The Supply Savings Guarantee is the icing on the cake, making ordering supplies both easier and less expensive . In his opinion, there’s really no reason not to do it .
“It’s nice to have a vendor that takes things off my plate ,” he said.
“If I have ideas on how I want to direct my practice, I have the opportunity to do a Practice Analysis . It’s nice to have it all under one umbrella . It makes everything so much more streamlined . And I really like not having to worry about my supplies ”
Dr . Wenzel noted that Kevin comes into the office once a week, but is always available for questions . “It’s nice to have a point of contact rather than just calling into a switchboard or sending an email,” he said “There’s someone you

Dr. Kevin M. Brown's conservative dental approach yields extraordinary results.
Dr. Kevin M. Brown knew he wanted his new office to look different from most dental offices.
“Even down to his business cards,” said Director of Operations, Tammy Gemmer, DAADOM “He said he didn’t want to see a tooth anywhere on there .”
Dr . Brown attended the University of Washington School of Dentistry and has been in private practice in Bellevue, Washington, since graduating in 2006 . He quickly fell in love with the art of direct composite bonding and the versatility of composite resins, developing his composite handling skills through the accreditation process of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry .
When it came time to design his cosmetic, restorative, and preventive dentistry practice, he drew inspiration from an unexpected source: Formula One . As an avid fan of the sport, he aimed to capture the essence of car racing .
From the red stitching in the dental chairs to the vibrant artwork and racing lights at the reception desk, he has created an atmosphere that feels fresh and exhilarating .
“I want it to be something completely unique and different from everything else. Not necessarily feel like a dental office.”
He also wanted it to be a place where it would be fun to work all day . A Burkhart customer from the start, he worked with his Equipment Specialist on the new space They expanded from eight ‘really small’ operatories to ten large, spacious ones Instead of cramming in 12 or 15 operatories, they
prioritized space . The restorative operatories are designed to be comfortable for patients and their accompanying family members . One of these rooms is even large enough to host live demonstrations, accommodating up to 12 observers watching on the monitor during the procedure .
“I’m so thankful for the amazing team at Burkhart that’s been so wonderful and helpful, and I attribute much of this amazingness to you guys. So, thank you.”
In addition to also having state-of-the-art digital equipment, his office also includes a photo studio and a 12-seat training room .
“I like to share what I have learned and what I know, and so I love teaching and sharing and helping other people figure out how to do things easier than the way I figured it out .”
Dr Brown enjoys teaching His work has been published in numerous dental journals, such as the Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry, and he has written numerous articles, including for Dentistry Today . He regularly gives webinars and in-person hands-on lectures in his training room, preferring not to travel .
Dr . Brown is an expert in direct composite bonding, a challenging procedure to master . He performs this technique regularly and shares examples of his work on Instagram .
Most of his work involves orthodontic and restorative procedures For children with issues like peg laterals, diastema, or missing teeth, he says porcelain isn't ideal due to its cost and the likelihood of breakage . Instead, Dr . Brown uses composite materials, which are noninvasive . This procedure involves layering different shades of composite to achieve a natural look .
Mastering this technique is difficult and requires extensive practice Dr Brown dedicated countless hours to perfecting his craft, practicing on plastic dentiform models over and over to ensure he could deliver high-quality results for his patients . Luckily, he was learning photography at the same time, which allowed him to better critique his work with detailed images revealing imperfections not visible from a distance .
“I wanted to have a teaching space because I do like to teach... I do not like traveling, so I figured, hey, if I build this, it will let people come see me instead.”
The teaching space holds twelve and is used regularly Dr Brown, an avid photographer, also created the dental art on the wall
Dr Brown experimented with various composites to understand their strengths in different situations and practiced creating the desired surface texture trying different burs . He built a library of photographs of both beautiful and worn-down teeth to use as references for his work . He says he enjoys the work of blending and feathering composite materials to recreate the natural appearance of teeth, and believes it is truly an art form
The office often sees patients dissatisfied with their teeth after orthodontic treatment . Patients are able to have conservative and more affordable alternatives to porcelain veneers or

crowns, with his composite techniques making subtle improvements Orthodontists appreciate this ability to deliver excellent results, which enhances their reputation as well, and as a result has developed strong relationships with many local orthodontists who refer patients to him .

Lakeway, Texas is a small city about twenty-five miles west of downtown Austin. Sitting on the south shore of Lake Travis, this scenic resort area is known for its clean, relaxed, and natural environment. So, it is no surprise that Dr. Daniel Eaddy, a Lakeway native, runs his practice the same way.
Dr . Eaddy’s father started his practice in Lakeway 25 years ago and was only one of three dentists at the time Dr Eaddy attended middle school and high school in Lakeway and went on to study at the University of Texas, where he pursued interests in chemistry and finance . Realizing that dentistry offered a unique opportunity to blend his love for science and business, he decided to follow in his father's footsteps, and learn from someone that he trusted . He also felt that dentistry could provide him with the autonomy to shape his career and life
He joined his father’s periodontal practice after dental school and worked with him until his retirement . Around 2022, knowing the lease on the practice would be expiring in 2024, he began exploring new property options . A real estate broker introduced him to a development project that perfectly aligned with his timeline and that would give him the opportunity to be involved in the planning process from the ground up .
He had several goals for the new space . He wanted more operatories with room for expansion . He wanted a sterilization area that would flow well, and a streamlined supply restocking area that would be more efficient,
without having waste or excess inventory . And he wanted to have a financial consultation area to be able to discuss cases and financial arrangements with patients in private .
He also wanted more space for his staff so that they felt like they had an area that they could go that was not in view of the public, with their own staff restroom, and his own office .
Dr . Eaddy values efficiency, and the maximization of usable, operable space . He wanted to find the best way to get as many productive operatories in in the office as he could while also having the value-adds necessary for culture and the patient experience .
A streamlined sterilization area with a clear dirty side/sterile side configuration .
A resupply restocking area designed for efficiency, with clear bins and labeled inventory in the same area with sterilization .
Private areas for staff, including a private restroom and a office for Dr . Eaddy .
Dr . Eaddy worked with Burkhart Dental, bringing in his Equipment Specialist early on to collaborate with the architect, developer, and engineer For the supply area, he worked with Design Ergonomics on a solution based on Six Sigma principles .
His office now has six fully functioning operatories and one clinical consultation room, along with a photography room for case presentations that could become a hygiene operatory in the future
“[Burkhart] was really helpful as far as recommendations on equipment and with the floor plan, working with the architect here, & the developer…everybody I thought put their heads together & produced a nice, nice result.”
Dr . Eaddy's passion for continual improvement and patient care is evident in every aspect of his practice . He is currently pursuing accreditation with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), focusing on aesthetic and reconstructive dentistry . He is also currently working on creating systems for his office that are repeatable and efficient to allow him to focus more on delivering high-quality care .
“The challenge about dentistry to me is…I think I could be successful as a manager alone, but when you're also the person that's doing the labor, and producing the product, it's hard to also be an optimal manager,” Dr . Eaddy explains .
“I'm learning & trying to create systems that are repeatable & can be implemented by anybody, so then I can focus on doing the things that are my skill set.”
Dr Eaddy started seeing patients in his brand-new office in early December of 2024 As his practice continues to grow, Dr . Eaddy is committed to the patient’s experience . He built his new office space to feel more relaxed and comfortable . He wanted a clean, natural, and welcoming environment to reflect the quality of care provided .
“I want to continue to
improve.
I’ve got to improve, change and grow constantly or otherwise I'm getting worse, because the world around is always improving & changing…I’ve got to do the same.”
Lakeway may have more than three dentists now, but Eaddy Dentistry stands out with its dedication to patients, efficiency, and continuous improvement .
