Message from the

Head of School and Board of Trustees In this historic year, filled with uncertainty, loss, and resilience, every part of our community came together to help keep Burke’s Burke’s. We can’t express enough gratitude for each of the donors and volunteers listed in this document who made invaluable contributions to our school’s ongoing financial health and community vitality. Your steadfast support and belief in our mission have an impact on every part of our school — we could not do a fraction of what we do without all of you. We hope you enjoy this year’s Annual Report offering a snapshot of all the incredible supporters, volunteers, and activities that provide Burke’s with the resources to educate, encourage, and empower our 400 girls. As always, we are humbled by the tremendous support you have for the everyday success of our students and thrilled by your engagement in envisioning Burke’s bright future. This year, your commitment was reflected in the Annual Fund, the re-imagined and completely virtual Benefit, the successful close of the Campaign for Girls, and the Class of 2020 Visionary Fund, an endowment fund in honor of our graduating class. Our Annual Fund received 100% participation from our Board of Trustees, faculty, and staff, and Alumnae Board, plus 99.7% from our current parents, with impressive support from grandparents, alumnae, and parents of alumnae. Together with the eighth-grade class gift we achieved a fundraising total of more than $1.76 million towards our operating budget, which is the highest it’s ever been. Our fundraising total also benefited from a fantastic Family Festival and virtual Burke’s Benefit. These efforts allow one in five girls in each classroom to attend Burke’s through generous financial assistance packages. Last year, we were able to spend over $1.7 million on financial assistance because of our community’s generosity. At this year’s Benefit, we launched and exceeded our goal for the Burke’s Community Emergency Fund to help our families in need of immediate aid and increased financial assistance. We are extremely grateful for the extraordinary numbers of parents, grandparents, and alumnae who donate their time to Burke’s year after year.

Our profound thanks to all of them, including those who went the extra mile in one of many leadership roles: • Capital Campaign Chairs: Thesia and Ambi Bowo and Annie Robinson Woods, the Campaign Community Phase chairs Leith Barry, Brian Davis, Lisa Farmer, and Yvo Smit, and Honorary Chairs Jennifer Caldwell and John H.N. Fisher • Annual Fund Committee Co-Chairs: Raymond Chrisman, Mike Harden, Mohammad Hirmand, and Karen Young (Parents); Max Boyer Glynn ‘94 (Alumnae); Susan McGuire (Parents of Alumnae) • Our Parents’ Association leadership: Jen Fetner Booth, Sara Singerman, Katja Björner Gutierrez, and Jim Butcher • Burke’s Benefit 2020 Co-Chairs: Margaret Corley Desaulniers, Brian Davis, and Shalini Harkness who worked tirelessly to reimagine Burke’s Benefit • The tremendous committee responsible for Family Festival 2019, especially Co-Chairs Eben Garnett and Shireen Lee • Class of 2020 Visionary Fund Committee Co-Chairs: Valerie & Chuck Batchelder, Lisa & Brian Bogosian, Grace & Antony Brettkelly, Pamela & John Casaudoumecq, Carolyn & Chris Colpitts, Amy Felsenthal, Benicia Gantner ’84, Cathy Halligan & Zoon Nguyen, Samantha Hartley-Hewitt ’82, Amy Perez Hayes ’89, Amanda McBaine ’86, Michaela Nestler-Chan, Ellen Park, Ali Reeder, Elizabeth Kropf Sparks ’86, Kate & Sean Visser Many thanks to all of you for partnering with us and keeping Burke’s strong and focused on our mission. 2020 Burke’s RAISE THE PADDLE: COMMUNITY EMERGENCY SUPPORT FUND Thank you to all for contributing to the wonderful success of the Burke’s Benefit!

While the event itself was unprecedentedly transformed from an in-person gathering to a virtual celebration, the Benefit was nonetheless an incredible testament to the resilience, generosity, and joyfulness of all in our community. For the first time ever, students, parents, alumnae, grandparents, and other supporters all were able to virtually attend and participate in this year’s Benefit event. Along with the contributions of our generous sponsors, we raised over $470,000 to support financial assistance and launch the Burke’s Community Emergency Support Fund, which supports members of our community hit disproportionately hard by economic changes in their lives. We especially want to thank Alex and Kevin Marchetti for providing a generous challenge gift to help make this fund a success. The Fund provided immediate relief to students and their families with urgent needs in spring 2020, and it will be essential in the coming years as we fulfill new and increased requests for financial assistance. We are committed to supporting all of these families so that every Burke’s girl can remain enrolled and thriving at the school. A deeply heartfelt thank you to our nimble and creative Benefit Co-Chairs, Margaret Corley Desaulniers, Brian Davis, and Shalini Harkness; and to the many volunteers listed here who helped make this event possible. Your flexible and optimistic support made the Burke’s Benefit truly an evening to remember.

Board of

TRUSTEES

The Board of Trustees is the governing body of the school. Parents, alumnae, educators, and other community member volunteers, elected by the board on an annual basis, serve as trustees. The Board of Trustees is charged with forming and supporting school policies and with long- and shortterm oversight of the school’s philosophical, financial, and physical health. Burke’s benefits from a strong partnership between the Board of Trustees and Head of School.

BURKE’S

DASH 2020 Thank you to all who participated in our first-ever virtual Burke’s DASH on Sunday, May 17! In lieu of a traditional race, students, parents, grandparents, alumnae, and friends were tasked with designing their own two-mile race. Although we were apart, we celebrated this wonderful community tradition together. A warm thanks to our DASH chairs, Karyn Barr, Johanna Calabria, and Bill Wheeler for their leadership, flexibility, and creativity. Their fortitude and imagination were crucial in pivoting DASH so seamlessly from an in-person race to a virtual race!

Thanks to the tremendous support of our parents, alumnae, grandparents, and parents of alumnae, we exceeded our goal and raised $22 million as a result of the Campaign for Girls Endowment Challenge. The reimagined classrooms, state-of-the-art Campus Center, increased endowment and innovation funds have transformed teaching and learning at Burke’s. Loyalty SOCIETY Members of the Burke’s Loyalty Society have made Burke’s a giving priority for the past nine consecutive years. Loyalty Society members are the foundation of the Annual Fund. Their consistent giving allows Burke’s to maintain its high standard of excellence and ensures that every student will receive the tools necessary to thrive. Burke’s is sincerely grateful for their loyalty. Membership in the Loyalty Society is renewed annually through a gift to the school, and members receive invitations to certain events over the course of the year, including the International Women’s Day student assembly with a special guest speaker followed by an appreciation lunch.

LEAVE A LEGACY:

The Barbara Burke Legacy Society The Barbara Burke Legacy Society was established to honor those who have made the decision to support the vision and mission of Burke’s by including the school in their estate plans. This may be through the inclusion of a bequest provision in a will or living trust, through a charitable lead trust or life income gift, or by naming the school as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy. Members of the Barbara Burke Legacy Society can be assured that their future gifts held as endowment will support the school’s mission in perpetuity and enable Burke’s to flourish as one of the leading girls’ schools in the country.

Please notify the Advancement Office if you have made a deferred or planned gift to Burke’s so that you will be included in The Barbara Burke Legacy Society and receive invitations to certain events over the course of the year, including the International Women’s Day student assembly with a special guest speaker and our annual Leadership Donor Party.

The Class of 2020

Visionary Fund This was the seventh year of Burke’s reinstated eighth-grade class gift which raised more than $200,000 for Burke’s endowment. This effort was organized by eighth-grade parent volunteers, who decided at an opening meeting in November 2019 to name the effort The Class of 2020 Visionary Fund. The gift was presented to the Class of 2020 at Burke’s and Beyond on June 10 with the hope that the 47 graduating eighth graders will one day contribute to this fund, giving back to the school that helped lay the foundation for who they will become. In addition, some families made contributions to create The Class of 2020 Legacy Impact Fund in honor of the entire Class of 2020. These graduates collectively voted for this complementary fund to support two organizations, Color of Change, which addresses modern online modes of activism, and the time-honored NAACP, as well as Burke’s own E-Block, a new course for Upper School students to explore issues of equity, empowerment, entitlement, race and racial justice, class, and privilege as future changemakers.

THE IMPORTANCE OF ENDOWMENT In this ever-changing economic environment, endowment has never been more important. Endowment ensures excellence and provides a margin of security against uncertainty. Without adequate, wisely-invested endowment funds, an institution is forever at the mercy of conditions beyond its control, such as economic, philanthropic, and demographic fluctuations, and unforeseen catastrophic events. A strong endowment is the mark of an esteemed and enduring institution. Income from the endowment allows Burke’s to maintain its financial equilibrium while allowing for innovation.

HOW TO ESTABLISH AN ENDOWED FUND We believe that giving should be a shared experience, one that benefits both the donor and the institution. Creating a named endowment fund is one of the best ways to forge a permanent, personal connection to Burke’s. These investments in the school not only serve to honor donors, they serve as tributes to others and help to encourage gifts as models of philanthropy that will become part of the everyday landscape of Burke’s. Endowment funds are established in perpetuity and are recognized each year in the school’s Annual Report.

ANNUAL FUND VOLUNTEERS PARENT CO-CHAIRS Raymond Chrisman Mike Harden Mohammad Hirmand Karen Young

Annual Giving The following reflects gifts received between July 1, 2019 and June 30, 2020 to the 2019-20 Annual Fund and eighth-grade class endowment funds. Participation at any level is greatly appreciated. Our parents achieved 99% participation in the Annual Fund this year, and for the fourth year in a row, faculty, staff, the Alumnae Board, and Board of Trustees reached 100% participation. We are incredibly grateful for this amazing show of support in the Burke’s mission, and your contributions help us educate, encourage, and empower each and every one of our 400 girls. Your generosity bridges the difference between tuition revenue and the true cost of educating our students, and this year, that meant an additional $1.57 million toward the Burke’s operating budget and over $200,000 the endowment.

THANKS TO EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU.

Ways to

of the gift when it is made, and the donor does not pay capital gains on the appreciated value of the stock or property. Contact the Advancement Office for more information on making a gift of securities or property.

PLANNED GIVING

CASH, CHECK, OR CREDIT CARD

Gifts of cash, typically payable by check, and credit card are tax-deductible and provide immediate funds to the school. The easiest way to give is online at www.burkes.org/give. You can also send a check to: Burke’s Advancement Office 7070 California Street San Francisco, CA 94121

MATCHING GIFTS

Many companies offer their employees the opportunity to double or, in some cases, triple their gifts to certain programs or organizations by matching them. Please check with your employer about its Matching Gifts Program.

SECURITIES & PROPERTY

Gifts of stocks, other securities, or property have two significant advantages to the donor—they are tax-deductible for the full fair market value

The Barbara Burke Legacy Society honors alumnae, past parents, grandparents, current parents, and friends who have remembered Burke’s by bequest in their estate plans or who have made a life income gift or other type of planned gift. You can become a member by: placing Burke’s in your will m aking Burke’s the beneficiary of a retirement account m aking a gift of a life insurance policy (a gift of life insurance can result in tax savings and can be made through an existing or a new life insurance policy) establishing a charitable trust m aking a gift of real estate or other tangible property Each of these gifts can result in substantial tax savings for the donor. Please consult the Advancement Office or your tax adviser for more information. Please notify the Advancement Office if you have made a deferred or planned gift to Burke’s so that you will be included in The Barbara Burke Legacy Society.

OTHER DEFERRED GIFTS

It is possible to make gifts of property that may allow income tax benefits for the donor during his or her lifetime, may be used during the lifetime of the donor, and which would revert to Burke’s, with possible estate tax savings. Institutions can achieve stability and growth through planned giving. Contact your tax adviser for specific advice that relates to your particular circumstances.

GIFTS IN KIND

Burke’s welcomes donations such as classroom supplies, athletic equipment, and other items related to the educational program, as well as donations of auction items to the annual Burke’s Benefit. Gift value is determined by the donor through appraisal or a record of purchase. Please contact the Advancement Office if you would like to make a gift in kind. For more information about making a gift of any type, please contact Selena Shadle, Director of Advancement, at 415.666.3204 or selena@kdbs.org. To make a gift online, please visit www.burkes.org/give.
