ach year, the Annual Report offers a snapshot of all the incredible supporters, volunteers, and activities that provide Burke’s with the resources to educate, encourage, and empower our 400 girls. Every single one of the donors and volunteers listed in this document is an invaluable contributor to our school’s health and vitality. We could not do a fraction of what we do without your steadfast support and belief in our mission.

As always, we are humbled by the tremendous support you have for the everyday success of our students and thrilled by your engagement in envisioning Burke’s bright future. This year, your commitment was reflected in both the success of our Annual Fund, as well as the extraordinary achievement of Many Hands. Many Voices. All Burke’s: The Campaign for Girls. I’m happy to report we have exceeded our goal for this $20 million campaign and have raised $22 million as a result of the Campaign for Girls Endowment Challenge. An anonymous donor generously matched $1 million in additional funds in order to grow our endowment by a total of $8 million through this campaign. This campaign was a holistic effort to move Burke’s forward in becoming the model for K-8 girls’ education in the country. The reimagined classrooms, state-of-the-art Campus Center, increased endowment and new funding for classroom innovation and diversity and inclusion programming are opening up many new avenues for teaching and learning. It’s truly an exciting time to be at Burke’s! We are so appreciative for the efforts of our Board of Trustees and our campaign volunteers — turn to page 11 to see all of their names.

Our Annual Fund received 100% participation from our Board of Trustees, faculty and staff, and Alumnae Board, plus 99% from our current parents, with impressive support from grandparents, alumnae and parents of alumnae — and together with the eighthgrade class gift we achieved a fundraising total of more than $1.65 million, which is the highest it’s ever been. Our fundraising total also grew thanks to successful events such as Family Festival, Burke’s Benefit, and DASH. These volunteer efforts are so important to both our financial health and community spirit. In fact, these efforts allow one in five girls in each classroom to attend Burke’s through generous financial assistance packages.

Last year, we were able to spend over $1.7 million on financial assistance because of our community’s generosity. We are extremely grateful for the extraordinary numbers of parents, grandparents, and alumnae who donate their time to Burke’s year after year.

Family Festival It was wonderful to come together as a community at our Annual Family Festival on Saturday, October 20, 2018. Attendees relished the time spent in the sunshine with friends, family, neighbors and other members of our wonderful San Francisco community.

Thank you for joining us at the circus to celebrate the Forty-Sixth Annual Burke’s Benefit! We want to extend a special thank you to our ringleaders: Sophie Middlebrook Hayward ’90, Abiah Folger Karthauser ’90, and Yvo Smit. Along with an amazing volunteer crew, they coordinated items for our Live and Online Auctions, collected donated wine and spirits, decorated the venue, and worked the event to make sure we all had an incredible night “Under the Big Top!” In addition, a special thank you to our auctioneer extraordinaire, Matthew Perry, who celebrated his 9th year of auctions at Burke’s. It was truly an honor to present him with his own gavel in appreciation for sharing his exceptional talents.

This year’s Benefit raised funds for student financial assistance and faculty and staff professional development. Thanks to our generous parent community, the Raise the Paddle was a great success and honored what our faculty have specifically identified as their top priority — supporting diverse classrooms that are representative of the world around us. The Endowment for Inclusive Classrooms will help us build successful classrooms where students come from a range of cultures, socioeconomic backgrounds, and learning styles. We are thrilled that we will be able to help the broadest possible group of girls gain access to a Burke’s education.

DASH 2019

hanks to all who joined us on a chilly Saturday at Crissy Field for the 20th Annual Burke’s DASH! A gloomy forecast of rain didn’t keep anyone away from this great ’fun’ raiser in support of Burke’s athletic, physical education, and wellness programs. Participants were all smiles on the course, which took them on a loop from the Warming Hut and back. Afterward, pancakes and hot chocolate refueled our runners before they headed out to enjoy the rest of their weekends.

Board of Trustees The Board of Trustees is the governing body of the school. Parents, alumnae, educators, and other community member volunteers, elected by the board on an annual basis, serve as trustees. The Board of Trustees is charged with forming and supporting school policies and with long- and short-term oversight of the school’s philosophical, financial, and physical health. Burke’s benefits from a strong partnership between the Board of Trustees and Head of School.

NEW TRUSTEES LINDA CHONG is a Vice President and Shareholder at Dodge & Cox. Previously, she was Vice President in Principal Finance in the fixed income division of Goldman Sachs and a business analyst at McKinsey & Co. Linda currently serves as the Development Chair on the board of the Center for Wellness and Achievement, a non-profit that teaches meditation in SF public schools in high risk areas. She also serves as a trustee on the Girl Scouts of Northern California Board and was previously a board member of the Bay Area Discovery Museum and the YMCA. She earned her J.D. from Harvard Law school and a B.A. from Harvard University, graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. Linda lives in San Francisco with her husband, Joseph, Clarissa ’21 and Nolan.

JAMES GUTIERREZ is a leading social entrepreneur and innovator in lending and financial technology. He is currently the CEO and Co-founder of Aura Financial. Aura provides affordable, credit-building loans to working families in America. James is also a Partner and Co-founder of Insikt, a firm investing in early stage technology companies focused on financial services, credit and payments. Previously, James founded and was CEO of Oportun (formerly Progreso Financiero), the leading provider of responsible, unsecured loans to Hispanics in the US that recently surpassed $1.5 billion in loans and over half a million borrowers since its founding. As CEO from 2005-2012, James led Oportun from its development as a nascent start-up to a market leader in the lending industry and raised over $250 million of debt and equity to fund its growth.

Under James’ leadership, the company scaled its loan originations to over 200,000 per year with revenues of $65 million, 85 retail stores in California and Texas, and 600 employees. James has served on the Federal Reserve Board’s Consumer Advisory Council and the Centennial Advisory Committee and is a frequent speaker at industry conferences on financial services innovation.

James also co-authored and helped pass two federal and state laws to help increase the availability of safe and affordable small dollar loans. In 2010, BusinessWeek selected James as one of America’s most promising social entrepreneurs and in 2012, Goldman Sachs named James one of America’s top 100 most intriguing entrepreneurs. In addition to Insikt, James also serves on the boards of Talent Inc., Listo!, SEO-SF, and the Silicon Valley Leadership Group. James was also an early investor in many leading technology companies including Trulia, OkCupid, StubHub, and Symphony Commerce. James earned his B.A. in Economics from Yale University and a M.B.A. from Stanford’s Graduate School of Business. James lives in San Francisco with his wife, Katja, Amelie ’26 and Louva ’28.

our years ago, we embarked on a transformational initiative. Many Voices.

Many Hands. All Burke’s.: The Campaign for Girls was revolutionary — a $20 million effort, bigger than anything the school had ever attempted before.

Burke’s launched the community phase of the campaign in February 2018, and by the time we broke ground on June 12, we had already raised $17 million toward our goal. We are thrilled to report the successful conclusion of the campaign thanks to the tremendous support of our alumnae, grandparents, and parents of alumnae. In fact, we have exceeded our goal and have raised $22 million as a result of the Campaign for Girls Endowment Challenge. An anonymous donor generously matched $1 million in additional funds in order to grow our endowment by a total of $8 million through this campaign. The reimagined classrooms, state-of-the-art Campus Center, increased endowment and innovation funds are already transforming teaching and learning at Burke’s.

Loyalty Society Members of the Burke’s Loyalty Society have made Burke’s a giving priority for the past nine consecutive years. Loyalty Society members are the foundation of the Annual Fund. Their consistent giving allows Burke’s to maintain its high standard of excellence and ensures that every student will receive the tools necessary to thrive. Burke’s is sincerely grateful for their loyalty.

he Barbara Burke Legacy Society was established to honor those who have made the decision to support the vision and mission of the Katherine Delmar Burke School by including Burke’s in their estate plans. THE CLASS OF 2019

Legacy Fund This was the sixth year of Burke’s reinstated eighth-grade class gift, which exceeded its goal of $200,000 — with 100% parent participation! This effort was organized by eighth-grade class parent volunteers, who decided at an opening meeting in November 2018 to name the effort The Class of 2019 Legacy Fund (See page 4).

The gift was presented at Pansy Day on June 12 with the hope that the 47 graduating eighth graders will one day contribute to this fund, giving back to the school that helped lay the foundation for who they will become.

THE IMPORTANCE OF ENDOWMENT In this ever-changing economic environment, endowment has never been more important. Endowment ensures excellence and provides a margin of security against uncertainty. Without adequate, wisely-invested endowment funds, an institution is forever at the mercy of conditions beyond its control, such as economic, philanthropic, and demographic fluctuations, and unforeseen catastrophic events. A strong endowment is the mark of an esteemed and enduring institution. Income from the endowment allows Burke’s to maintain its financial equilibrium while allowing for innovation.

HOW TO ESTABLISH AN ENDOWED FUND We believe that giving should be a shared experience, one that benefits both the donor and the institution. Creating a named endowment fund is one of the best ways to forge a permanent, personal connection to Burke’s. These investments in the school not only serve to honor donors, they serve as tributes to others and help to encourage gifts as models of philanthropy that will become part of the everyday landscape of Burke’s. Endowment funds are established in perpetuity and are recognized each year in the school’s Annual Report.

MATCHING GIFTS

Many companies offer their employees the opportunity to double or, in some cases, triple their gifts to certain programs or organizations by matching them. Please check with your employer about its Matching Gift Program.

The Barbara Burke Legacy Society honors alumnae, past parents, grandparents, current parents, and friends who have remembered Burke’s by bequest in their estate plans or who have made a life income gift or other type of planned gift. You can become a member by: • placing Burke’s in your will • making Burke’s the beneficiary of a retirement account • making a gift of a life insurance policy (a gift of life insurance can result in tax savings and can be made through an existing or a new life insurance policy) • establishing a charitable trust • making a gift of real estate or other tangible property Each of these gifts can result in substantial tax savings for the donor. Please consult the Advancement Office or your tax adviser for more information.

Please notify the Advancement Office if you have made a deferred or planned gift to Burke’s so that you will be included in The Barbara Burke Legacy Society.

OTHER DEFERRED GIFTS

It is possible to make gifts of property that may allow income tax benefits for the donor during his or her lifetime, may be used during the lifetime of the donor, and which would revert to Burke’s, with possible estate tax savings.

GIFTS IN KIND

Burke’s welcomes donations such as classroom supplies, athletic equipment, and other items related to the educational program, as well as donations of auction items to the annual Burke’s Benefit. Gift value is determined by the donor through appraisal or a record of purchase. Please contact the Advancement Office if you would like to make a gift in kind.
