from the Head of School A MESSAGE FROM MICHELE WILLIAMS

A

t the end of every school year, there’s one ritual that tends to fly under the radar of our big Upper School milestones: the Stepping Up Ceremony. Lower School students participate in one of the most popular Burke’s traditions — the secret song — and serenade their teachers before literally stepping up (or backwards across the floor of the Lunchroom) to the next grade level. It’s always a fun and touching event to witness, especially this past year’s on June 8. (See photos at right.)

Lower School Director Alice Moore asked the girls at the start to revisit what the year’s theme had been, and a number of arms shot up with the answer — community. While we couldn’t have known at the time the theme was decided, in retrospect, that’s the perfect way to characterize the 2016-17 school year. We said goodbye to Burke’s legends and grappled with a tumultuous political landscape, but we’ve stuck together throughout it all.

The number of people from across the Burke’s community who came to campus to celebrate Gale Mosheim’s life with us in January was astonishing. The joy was palpable in the Gymnasium as we remembered her and her indomitable spirit — read more about her on page 20.

At the same time, I’m bolstered by the amazing amount of work we accomplished together this year in order to push forward new programs that will honor every facet of our community.

They were the end result of committees that carried forward the recommendations of the Diversity Task Force, and they were powered by partnerships between faculty and staff with members of the Board of Trustees and the parent body. All volunteered their time and did great things while doing so.

What you do through all of these activities is educate, encourage, and empower our students to do even more of the same.

The 2016-17 school year was one in which we renewed our commitment to a meaningful and substantial service-learning

10

program. We saw third graders visiting the Tennessee Hollow watershed in the Presidio as part of their environmental science curriculum. Upper School students read the 9/11-themed book Towers Falling as part of their English class and connected the lesson to real-world concerns such as Islamophobia. What we have seen this past year is that the same academic lessons we teach to build character and foster creativity can also be extended even further to benefit the world around us.

As I write this, we’re busy getting ready to kick off a new school year, one that will undoubtedly bring more change to the world, our country, and our community. But I’m not at all worried about how we will handle it together. Words aren’t enough to express my gratitude for this community. Thank you so much for being a part of it.

STAFF AT GIANTS GAME In the weeks before the 2016-17 school year started, faculty and staff members were busy prepping classrooms and discussing curriculum — but there was also plenty of time to head to AT&T Park on Thursday, August 18, 2016, for the Giants game versus the New York Mets. SECOND GRADE ON PARADE In the weeks leading up to the 2016 Presidential election, the second grade did a deep dive into what elections are and what they mean. As part of this study, second graders made campaign posters with qualities they possess that make them good leaders, and they displayed them on a march around the Lower School bluetop in early November. Some of the words we saw were creative, kind, determined, loyal, and smart.

NEW PROGRAM OFFERINGS TARGET STRATEGIC PLAN GOALS Several new programs at Burke’s this year helped advance a variety of Strategic Plan goals: • The new HEART (Health, Emotional Awareness, Responsibility, and Time Management) class in the Upper School expands curricular offerings in social-emotional learning beyond the fourth grade. Upper School Counselor Camilla Behnke coteaches the class with Librarian Michelle Loomis, Makery Facilitator Susan Deemer, and Learning Specialist Ron Malek, who also touch on study skills, digital citizenship, and how to research.

• A new Makery elective gives eighth graders the opportunity to use one of their arts rotations to tinker with Ms. Deemer in Makery Down. This fall, the inaugural class worked on a very musical project: turning the stairs outside their classroom into a piano in the style of the Tom Hanks movie Big. • After a successful four-month trial on one bus route starting in January 2017, Burke’s Student Transportation Pilot Program will launch an additional route starting this fall. The original starts at the 280/101 interchange in Silver Terrace and weaves through the Mission and Noe Valley on its way to Burke’s. One new route will start downtown and head through the Marina and Presidio Heights out to campus.

• Following a Professional Development Institute in June 2016 that was geared toward service learning, partnerships with experts in the field yielded a number of new projects, including a unit on food insecurity in seventh-grade advisories and environmental “action plans” following the fourth graders’ yearly trip to study the Gold Rush in Coloma.

HOLOCAUST ESCAPEE On Wednesday, November 30, eighth graders gathered in the Media Room to hear from George Elbaum, a survivor of the Nazi’s Invasion of Poland who eventually made it out of the Warsaw Ghetto thanks to his mother’s tireless work. He was only one year old when the Nazis invaded in 1939 and never knew many of his family members, including his father, who were sent to concentration camps. George eventually came to the United States as a refugee and settled in Oregon, later attending Massachusetts Institute of Technology and becoming an aeronautical engineer.

In 2009, he wrote a book about his experiences, Neither Yesterdays Nor Tomorrows: Vignettes of a Holocaust Childhood.

BLEND-ING IN There isn’t a school event much better than a campus-wide potluck dinner, and that’s exactly what happened at the BLEND Dinner on Wednesday, November 30. Families came together with dishes that are important to their cultures in the Lunchroom for a feast that spanned the globe. For more photos, visit kdbs.org/blend16.

BURKE’S MAKES INTERNATIONAL FILM DEBUT On the week of December 5-9, CODE.org and Hour of Code founder Hadi Partovi was a busy man. He rang the NASDAQ opening bell in New York, met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and visited Week of Code at Burke’s. Mr. Partovi visited Burke’s on Thursday, December 8, first speaking to Upper School students at their weekly assembly, which was themed to the ongoing Week of Code activities taking place, then visiting Open Make during recess in Makery Up to observe Lower School students play self-directed coding games. He was followed by a film crew from The Economist as part of a video series titled “The Agenda,” which was timed to release around the World Economic Forum held in Davos, Switzerland. ADAPTIVE P.E. CLASS SHEDS LIGHT ON DIFFERING ABILITIES Using accessories such as weights, blindfolds, exercise balls, and more, Upper School P.E. students attempted to navigate different stations in the Gym this past spring with a new perspective on how others experience the world. Physical therapist Janet Babb donated her time to teach this valuable lesson to our students. “The children were open and responsive to trying to perform activities with an arm or a leg restrained or one eye covered or by wearing gloves to try a fine motor task,” Janet says. “It was a wonderful, collaborative experience of working with the P.E. teachers, advisors, and Rebekah Wolman to give the students a chance to expand their understanding and awareness of their classmates’ physical and sensory challenges.”

TEACHER PROFILE: DR. TONE RAWLINGS Dr. Tone Rawlings, who started at Burke’s in August 2015, is keeping things interesting in the science lab for fifth and sixth graders.

The curriculum centers on the standard topics, like biology and engineering, but how many of us studied the principles of heat transfer by making s’mores in convection ovens constructed out of cardboard? Or learned about earth sciences by building pollution detectors from the circuits up?

Dr. Rawlings brought her innovative methodology to Burke’s after teaching science at the Art Institute of California in San Francisco and the Winsor School in Boston, as well as serving as an instructor with i2 Camp. That organization collaborates with

It was a banner year for all teams, which included the following accomplishments: • In a three-game match at Marin Country Day School on November 8, 2016, the Varsity Green volleyball team held onto its Bay Area Interscholastic Athletic League (BAIAL) championship with a win over San Francisco Day School. AROUND THE WORLD AND BACK IN TIME A representative from Google Expeditions came to Burke’s on Thursday, May 4, and took groups of students on a broad array of field trips without ever leaving the Media Room!

With Google Cardboard and virtual reality technology, fifth graders had the opportunity to travel to the Galapagos Islands, fourth graders participated in the Gold Rush, and eighth graders witnessed actors rehearsing Shakespeare at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland — among other adventures. Third graders took a tour of a Staten Island transfer station (augmenting their current study of what happens to garbage and recycling) and then took a trip under the sea...and judging from their loud reaction, they enjoyed it!

GAMES ARE THE ANSWER AT MATH NIGHT 2017 Math Night made a triumphant return to Burke’s on the night of

09

February 15, as more than 200 parents joined their daughters to learn about what happens in their math classes. And in many of those classes, what happens is games! As Lower School Director Alice Moore said in her opening remarks, studies show that games are highly effective at imparting logic and computational skills to students who use them in their math curricula. On Math Night, Lower School students went to their classrooms and Upper School students went to the Library, but all of them showed the adults how they reason and work out math problems using a variety of methods and games. There was a lot of enthusiasm and excitement across campus — the result of parents modeling positive attitudes for what can be seen as a tricky subject.

MAKERY MINDSET

It’s not just a curriculum or a class, it’s a mindset. The Makery, which opened on campus in 2013, has now permeated across all corners of campus.

Lessons that bridge subject matter involve experimenting and creating projects that blend modalities, resulting in innovation all year long. Here are a handful from the 2016-17 school year.

Remembering

Gale Mosheim

ith heavy hearts, the Burke’s family announces that longtime second-grade teacher Gale Mosheim, who retired in June 2016, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, January 14.

Ms. Mosheim taught in Burke’s 2A classroom for 39 years, impacting generations of students with her bright personality and nurturing soul, and she had the gift of making all around her — most especially her students — feel loved and understood.

Burke’s students, faculty, and staff were joined by close to 200 members of the Burke’s community — including alumnae, parents, and former teachers — to celebrate her life on Wednesday, February 1. Students sang and shared remembrances of Ms. Mosheim, including her love of bird-watching and sunny disposition, before returning to class. The adults remained, with Anna Yatroussis ’84 and Elizabeth Kropf Sparks ’86 sharing their experiences of having Ms. Mosheim as a teacher both for themselves and their daughters. Longtime colleague Susan Faust finished out the service with her reflections.

As part of a lasting tribute to Ms. Mosheim’s exceptional impact on the Burke’s community, we have established an endowment fund in support of a new program: The Gale Mosheim Fellowship Program.

The Mosheim Fellowship will pay tribute to her appreciation of learning and growing by supporting her Burke’s colleagues who share that love. Each year, the Mosheim Fellows will be honored and celebrated, memorializing Ms. Mosheim’s legacy to Burke’s and ensuring that it lives on for years to come.

Big Sisters-Little Sisters

E

& School Families

ven if they have children of their own at home, each member of Burke’s faculty and staff has a family at school.

Each employee co-parents one of 38 School Families with a colleague or two, gathering with a dozen or so students from all grades at several events over the course of the school year. They include a variety of Thanksgiving-related games and the traditional “Simple Gifts” circle dance and song, watching the Maypole and Eighth-Grade Musical together in May, and making valentines for their “sisters” who have moved on to high school.

This past year, Big Sisters met their Little Sisters in person for the first time on October 20, 2016. While fourth graders had created videos beforehand to introduce themselves, they could hardly contain their excitement as they waited outside the kindergarten classrooms. After introductions were made, the new pairs gathered together to compare likes and dislikes (beloved pets are often a common love) before heading out to the kindergarten playground to play — and by the end of that session, they were already bonded for life.

At the core of School Families are the relationships between Big Sisters and Little Sisters. Every fall, the fourth graders are paired off with kindergarteners, the newest members of the Burke’s community, taking the youngsters under their wings and helping them learn how to navigate their new environment. At the end of the year, their Little Sisters present the fourth graders with homemade gifts at the Stepping Up Ceremony as they prepare to make the leap to the Upper School. The relationship doesn’t end there, however — on Pansy Day, departing eighth graders present their green and gold ribbons to the fourth graders, who are Big Sisters themselves by then.

The Joy of

Learning

A 21st-century learning model makes space for joy and wonder in even the most serious academic endeavors.

W

e Americans take great pride in our work ethic, and why not? Oldfashioned, hard work has been the ethos behind some amazing achievements in our country’s short history. However, over time, the valuing of work for work’s sake seems to have led to a rather narrow — and, frankly, uninspired — definition of productivity.

Consider some of these well-worn American adages:

• “Work isn’t supposed to be fun, that’s why they call it work.”

• “Success is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.”

• “No pain, no gain.”

The message for today’s youth: If you’re having a good time, you’re probably not getting anything done.

ortunately, that bleak message is patently false, and the science exists to prove it. Researchers at the National Institute for Play (nifplay.org), a 501c(3) non-profit public benefit foundation founded by physician and psychiatrist Stuart Brown, M.D., draw on evidence-based knowledge to spread the word that “play” is an absolute necessity to our society’s future. Brown, who is also the author of Play: How it Shapes the Brain, Opens the Imagination and Invigorates the Soul, notes in an interview with Amazon that adults who fail to exercise their sense of playfulness “demonstrate social, emotional, and cognitive narrowing,” are “less able to handle stress,” and “often experience a smoldering depression.”

At a time when our own educational system places increasingly greater emphasis on test results and less on the learning experience itself, Burke’s takes the science and philosophy espoused by the Institute very much to heart.

Not surprisingly, Brown and the Institute also advocate for playfulness in the classroom, as it helps learning become a joyful experience. “Play promotes true intellectual curiosity,” Brown says. “It has been shown to increase lifetime performance, just as adequate recess time leads to increased long-term academic accomplishments.” Here, Burke’s educators prove every day that hard work and joyful play not only belong together, but that this combination helps develop lifelong learners primed to make the world a better place.

- Engagement Matters “I’m glad my child is having fun, but is the program rigorous enough?” It’s a fair question, says Alice Moore, Director of the Lower School, and one answer may seem obvious: A lesson that’s fun is one that’s more likely to be remembered.

“This word ‘rigor’ seems to imply ‘hard and unpleasant,’ and yes, you can have an exercise that’s just rigorous and a grind. But when you show a student why [a lesson] is meaningful and how they can engage with it, it becomes an authentic learning experience,” she says. “And that’s where the joy comes in.”

But for many, the idea of joyful learning means “academic light,” according to Head of School Michele Williams.

“Happiness and play are seen as trite, but these elements are deeply connected to how children learn,” she says.

Those connections run deep: Reading and imaginative play, for example, interact when children begin to write.

The activities that Burke’s teachers develop are carefully designed not only to bring joy to learners, but to be “substantive and have meaning and connection to what’s being taught,” Williams says. “That’s one of the things the teachers do amazingly well here.”

Consider the way in which Burke’s fifth-graders tackle the study of ancient Greece: “They read the translations of works and study mythology in the way you and I might have in school. But after reading and learning different stories, they also write original plays to summarize one of the myths, and then perform those plays, wearing costumes, in front of the school and their parents in the center of campus,” Williams says. “Those fifth-grade Greek plays are a real rite of passage; they’re witty and clever, and natural performers and storytellers emerge. Yet, it’s all around a standard, important content piece in the Western world.”

Burke’s Lower School Counselor Jessica Nenner sees firsthand how such engaging yet demanding lessons affect students. “Sometimes the most academically challenging classrooms are the ones children are most excited to come to, because they’re engaged — they’re not just being asked to memorize things and spit them out,” she says. “Joyful doesn’t mean easy. You want students to be grappling with hard things and taking on big questions.”

Parents and grandparents may wonder where the hardcore memorization and drills that characterized their own education went. To technology, responds Dr. Tone Rawlings, fifth- and six-grade science teacher at Burke’s. “We can bypass a lot of that because we now have all the information we need at our fingertips,” she reasons. “The real question now is, what can we do with this information?”

- A Growth Mindset -

E

ffective education is a giant balancing act that requires keen understanding of where each individual child is in that moment.

“It’s essential to keep child development in mind,” affirms Mike Matthews, Director of Curriculum and Program Innovation.

“Students learn at different stages, so cultivating lifelong learners necessitates providing the ‘just right’ challenge for the moment, in an environment that values learning and provides regular opportunities for play, discovery, and joy.”

Burke’s curriculum is developed with a clear understanding of and commitment to end goals in learning. The key, according to Moore, is “finding that sweet spot that offers just the right amount of challenge,” which is called the “learning edge.” “It’s a little out of reach, but not so far that they can’t do it,” she says. “There’s great joy in being in that spot and it propels you forward.”

Naturally, in the Upper School, challenges increase — but engagement must remain at the forefront if students are to progress. “It’s a lot about mindset here at Burke’s, as well as the idea that intelligence and skills are not fixed,” Moore says. “You can move them by practicing and working hard.

This spring, sixth graders created self-contained water containers (a.k.a. plastic-free water bottles) using mixtures of sodium alginate and calcium lactate. The odd texture led to some delighted reactions!

People with fixed mindsets tend to think they have a fixed quantity of intelligence that could run out if they try too hard. That’s where students’ fear of failure comes in, and why we talk a lot about how mistakes are welcome because that’s how your brain grows.”

This growth mindset is of particular importance at Burke’s.

“With girls, there’s often a sense of perfectionism that keeps them from trying things and taking chances,” Williams says. The school works toward banishing that fear from the beginning, taking light-hearted and humorous approaches to acknowledging mistakes. “We tell the girls that when you make mistakes, that when you fail, sometimes that’s when the most learning happens,” Moore says. “So it’s really valuable to make mistakes — they’re supposed to happen.” In this way, a personal sense of joy is not reliant on any particular accomplishment, but rather something a person carries around with them.

“When you’re helping folks to shape a joyful life or value joy, you’re doing it not because it’s frivolous but because life is complicated,” Williams says. “Part of it is knowing social-emotionally how to ride the highs and the lows. So, if there’s import placed on the feelings you have for things, then you’ll see that as valuable in your life.” In the end, you’ll be able to say that you enjoyed a math class because you learned something you didn’t previously know or you worked with someone you hadn’t before.

- A Culture of Joy The Burke’s commitment to joyful and rigorous learning runs deep. “We’re very upfront about the fact that we celebrate childhood and think joy is an important component of learning, and that academic rigor must be provided with a real and equal commitment to socialemotional learning,” Williams says. “As adults, we all know smart and talented people whose social-emotional side wasn’t as well developed, and they run into issues. We work to create an environment where kids feel emotionally safe so they can develop into emotionally strong kids. They understand their values and they feel grounded.”

Adult modeling is a key part of this effort, from the school staff to others in the community, to — of course — Burke’s families. “We can’t accomplish for the girls what we want in terms of development if we aren’t doing the work ourselves,” Williams points out. Professional development for Burke’s teachers is innovative and ongoing, and that keeps them happy as well. “I think part of being joyful as a teacher is having agency, a say in what you’re doing in your classroom and when you’re doing it,” Moore says. “Yes, we have a framework to design curriculum, but within that, the teachers have a lot of independence and creativity. It’s pretty exciting.”

explains. “These are young girls! You should hear laughter on campus, you should be able to see adults get up on stage and act goofy.”

It’s natural for parents to want their daughter to be happy, but they also want her to be ready to take her SATs and get into a top college. However, Dr. Brown advises parents to resist the temptation to maximize every minute of their child’s time “to increase their competitiveness and performance” for the sake of a college resume. “With every moment scripted by adult ambitions for them, kids cannot become naturally attuned to their innate talents,” he says.

Fortunately, Burke’s has plenty of program divisions that fulfill accountability and data-driven educational requirements to ensure that students fully prepped to attend great high schools and colleges. The good news is that joy and academic preparedness are not mutually exclusive. “Be honest with yourself about your end goal for your child,” suggests Moore. “For instance, you may say you want your child to be capable on her own in the world, to be curious and confident. Then work backward from there.”

Anyone who has worked with children knows they can instinctually pick up on how adults are feeling, and will often take their cue from them. “I think all of us take our work and our mission to educate, encourage, and empower girls seriously, but we try to do in a way that we’re not taking ourselves too seriously,” Williams

ear Alumnae,

I’m thrilled to be starting my second year at Burke’s after a quiet summer of planning in Sea Cliff. My first year was a true pleasure, and I look forward to a year of meeting new families and hopefully many more of you. In a year that was full of ups and downs for the Burke’s community, I have been bolstered time and again by the warmth, support, and ferocious spirit I found here.

One particular bright spot that comes to mind must be shared. On International Women’s Day in March, Burke’s held its 10th annual IWD assembly. Our featured speaker happened to be an alumna, the captivating and brilliant Ebony Frelix ’91, whose reflections were both personal and universal, and felt so timely. On the same day, Rebekah Wolman, Director of the Upper School, received an inspiring email from Ashley Vidal ’06 that Rebekah shared with the rest of Burke’s staff and faculty. With permission, I feel fortunate to share part of Ashley’s email with you here: “I met the Brooklyn sun this morning and hopped on my bicycle to Central Park, where I was met by a sea of red. We all met to strike, to stand in solidarity with all women. Bandanas, signs, and kindness decorated the crowd. Although I arrived alone, I didn’t leave alone. I was surrounded by other folks speaking their truth — including another Burke’s alum, Ms. Lizzie Logan. “ I hadn’t seen Lizzie since graduating from Burke’s in 2006, and there we found ourselves embracing in midtown Manhattan. Organically, we respectively remarked how in many ways Burke’s set the stage for us to be there, standing with women and each other. As evidenced by the weird fate that put us together, out of the thousands of people gathered. After leaving Lizzie, I called my dad. I had to thank him for sending me to Burke’s, but I realized I had more folks to thank. “ I want to thank you, and the unbelievable female teachers I had in my time there. Today, I stand proudly as a woman, a social worker, a Brooklynite, and a Burke’s alumna. ” I have come back to this email over the course of the past months, often remembering it after meeting other inspiring and inspired alumnae of Burke’s. I hope that reading updates from your classmates and the news of the incredible work and growth being done at Burke’s today fills you with similar inspiration, strength, and — when needed — comfort.

Q & A:

Catharine “Katie” Clark ’81 If you spend any time in the growing DoReMi arts district in San Francisco (named for the Dogpatch, Potrero Hill, and the Mission), you might have seen Catharine Clark ’81’s name on her eponymous art gallery on Utah Street. She opened the space in 1991, and in the 26 years since then, she has exhibited more than 200 shows and written numerous catalogs and books. Her interest in the arts reaches well back into her time at Burke’s; after winning the humanities award on Pansy Day, teacher Ann Perez gifted her with a book about the French artist Edgar Degas, which Katie still owns. “I keep the book on my library shelf next to my desk at home and think of it as a source of encouragement when I have personal doubts,” Katie says. It was also an appropriate gift because Katie was an accomplished dancer who later performed professionally with Morphe Danza Teatro in Bologna, Italy. Ms. Perez’s influence continues today: “Her detailed and exuberant descriptions of climbing Machu Picchu inspired a profound interest in my desire to visit that mountain, which I intend to do for my 50th birthday later this year,” Katie says. She lives in the Bay Area with her two teenage children.

When you were a student at Burke’s, what did you dream you’d be doing at this point in your life?

I dreamed of having a life in many different fields. That may sound as if I were overly ambitious, but I think I felt that way because we were encouraged to believe that we could pursue any career, and (fortunately) I didn’t quite understand how unusual that was until much later in my educational life. Also, because I took ballet after school and was quite serious about becoming a professional dancer, I knew that while I hoped to have a long dancing life, dancer’s careers are often short-lived, so planning for a future beyond being a performer was important.

What three words or phrases come to mind when you hear “Katherine Delmar Burke School”?

The motto that I know is associated with Burke’s now is a wonderfully inspired one, and I have used it as a mantra in my own thinking about what we should be doing

in education everywhere and all the time.

To my knowledge, it was not the motto associated with the school at the time I was there, but it was certainly expressed in how we were taught. So, I guess educate, empower, and encourage are three words I would associate with the Burke’s school experience. I might add enlighten and engage, but that would make five words!

What would you tell incoming kindergarten families about the journey ahead?

To allow the experience to be a journey and to realize that what Burke’s provides is an educational and emotional scaffolding that will support their girls throughout the many adventures and challenges in their lives.

What is your favorite memory from Burke’s?

I loved participating in school theater. Ms. Rudo was our music teacher, and at that time, we wrote our eighth-grade musical and performed in it. I got to wear a Big Bird costume and sing “One of These Things (is

Alumnae Not Like the Other”) with my two best friends at the time, both of whom were named Kim. Another great memory is of the Greek Games event, which was held every spring. This event was in the Upper School and involved many different activities. We were divided into teams of Spartans and Athenians and then competed in intramural Olympic games.

There was also an amazing food component to the day with goodies like spanakopita and baklava (better than what our bagged lunches or cafeteria fare had on offer) and, best of all, we wore costumes and not our uniforms!

What Burke’s experiences do you attribute to your personal or professional success?

Burke’s was a very challenging school, and while at the time I occasionally felt burdened by the homework and the intensity of the classes, the pedagogy facilitated and honed my time management skills, allowing me to get the most from my education and, as a middle school student, to learn how to balance my education and ballet, and later, motherhood and a professional life. As a single mom with two teenagers and my own business, organization, curiosity, and focus are key to success. The values cherished by the school also helped instill inquisitiveness, a love of learning, and perseverance, which are critical in my field as a contemporary art gallerist. In my profession, I often have to research, write, and edit. I know that I developed strong writing skills at Burke’s thanks to Mr. Bell (especially the assignment where we researched, read, and wrote about a single author; in my case, Katherine Anne Porter), and through Ms. Pringle’s history class where we learned to research an historical subject in depth.

Camille Hampton ’94

As the force behind Burke’s new Alumnae Mentorship Network, she is passionate about connecting professional women for everyone’s benefit. (Learn more at kdbs. org/mentorship!) As for her own path, she’s taken an interesting one — while she now works in finance as a Business Banking Relationship Manager at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, she was previously a dancer with the Golden State Warriors (1999-2000) and the Sacramento Kings (2003-2008)! Her passion for supporting women’s professional development was key when she recently served on a mentoring committee for one of her company’s largest women’s affinity networks, placing 550 participants in mentorship relationships and groups, as well as developing all aspects of the program. Camille has a true Burke’s sister in Avril Hampton Zermeño ’91, and she is also a graduate of Lowell High School and the University of San Francisco.

When you were a student at Burke’s, what did you dream you’d be doing at this point in your life?

In Upper School, I remember we each created an illustrated timeline of our lives — past, present, and future. It was like the throwback version of a modern-day vision board. I loved the project because I learned how to identify and conceptualize what I wanted to achieve in life. I’m proud to say I’ve met most of those goals: I’m a collegeeducated black woman with a rewarding career in finance; I’ve traveled the world as a professional dancer and choreographer for the National Basketball Association (NBA); and most importantly, I have a beautiful, loving family.

What three words or phrases come to mind when you hear “Katherine Delmar Burke School”?

When I think of Burke’s, the word “sisterhood” immediately comes to mind.

Burke’s students and alumnae represent

a very powerful network of capable, resourceful women across a multitude of generations. I think of women and girls with strong personal identities who learn to be inquisitive thinkers very early in their lives, and rightfully so. We’re an extremely closeknit, supportive community, and personally, I feel very blessed to be a part of it.

What is something you learned at Burke’s that you still carry with you today?

Burke’s taught me so many important foundational skills, such as resilience, teamwork (I love sports), and the art of being multidimensional.

We all go through those inevitable stages of sheer awkwardness, but if I had to relive my past, I would approach life with more confidence. Not with the false confidence we see in today’s digital world; rather, through the power of unapologetic self-worth — which I discovered much later in life.

How would you encourage Burke’s students and fellow alumnae to give back to Burke’s?

I think it’s important to challenge the idea that giving back is only meaningful in a financial capacity. I believe the great work being done at Burke’s is actually gifted through time and love, rather than financial

EVENTS Town-Burke’s Alumni Cocktail Party

O

n Wednesday, January 18, despite a torrential downpour, more than 60 alumni from Town School for Boys and Katherine Delmar Burke School gathered at MatrixFillmore to mix, mingle, and toast to the New Year.

In the past, this reunion mixer has just hosted the schools’ younger alumni; this year, Town’s Alumni Council and Burke’s Alumnae Board decided to extend the invitation to the Classes of 2009 and earlier.

With a roaring fireplace keeping the venue cozy, Town and Burke’s graduates from every era had the chance to catch up over cocktails. Alumni Council President Will Bartlett (Town ’89) and Alumnae Board President Katy Congdon Williams ’96 welcomed the guests and shared school updates for the year ahead. Encouraged by fellow alumnae, Katy offered a toast to the memory of Ms. Mosheim. Dr. Philip Heller (Town ‘69) joked, “It only took me 48 years to figure out how to crash a Burke’s party.”

The recipient exemplifies a life of learning, service to community, individuality, and the ability to make a difference in the world. oe Duskin has dedicated her career to public education and nonprofit leadership on behalf of youth. Zoe is the San Francisco Site Director of College Track, a national non-profit committed to empowering young people from low-income communities to become the first in their family to graduate from college. Zoe was the founding principal of the Inspired Teaching Demonstration Public Charter School, a teacher training school committed to improving the quality of public education in Washington, D.C. She also worked for San Francisco Unified School District and at Aim High, a Bay Area nonprofit that expands opportunities for low-income middle school students and their teachers through a free summer learning and enrichment program. Zoe has a B.A. from Barnard College and an M.A. from the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University.

The following is excerpted from the speech Zoe Duskin delivered at the Alumnae Luncheon on June 1: I’ve spent my career learning how teachers learn, and how schools can function as learning communities. One thing I know for sure is this — we are all haunted by our own schooling experiences. When we learn new ideas, when we shape our pedagogy, when we imagine what is possible, when we act reflexively, and when we improvise, our starting point is inevitably our own experience in school. Aren’t I lucky that my foundation for a career in education was a childhood at Burke’s?

Remember with me, for a moment, sitting on the red circle in the kindergarten room at Burke’s. The circle has a diameter, perhaps, of 9 feet, and in this linoleum oasis is a collection of green plaid and crossed legs with skinned knees and brown shoes that have grass stuck to the seam where the leather meets the sole. We sit, looking up at Ms. Schwarz in anticipation. She waits for wiggles to still, and then whispers softly that she has good news. Today is the day we meet our third-grade buddies. We burst into cheers and then get to work creating nametags for our new friends and picking out books that the towering third graders will read. Some of us are excited and chatter about who we hope will be our buddy based on who we saw dominating foursquare at recess. Some of us are nervous that our buddies will not like us. We only know that there is no one as wonderful as Ms. Schwarz.

These are the kinds of moments I hoped to create for students as a principal at the Inspired Teaching School in Washington, D.C. And let me tell you, there are so many things that had to go right in order to make that kindergarten moment happen.

The classroom was built to be an early childhood classroom, not converted from an office or auto repair shop. The students have been outside, on grass, with time to play and skin their knees and get a Band-Aid and a hug from Ms. Coleman at

the front desk. This means that green space is available and accessible. It means it is safe to be outside. It means that all staff [members] in the school are invested in the social and emotional development of the students. In this kindergarten memory, the teachers have had time to plan with colleagues who teach in different grade levels, to collaborate, not just on behalf of raising test scores, but for the sake of strengthening the social fabric of the school community. None of these details can be taken for granted, and none of them are the norm in American schools.

I believe that private schools like Burke’s can fulfill a public purpose in two ways: First, they can offer an example of what schools can and should be. Perhaps this is what America needs most from Burke’s — to be courageously tackling the most interesting questions in education, and girls’ education specifically. What does it take to educate innovators? How do we define leadership? How can we teach empathy? What makes a girl? Burke’s can answer these questions, and America needs a good example. Let’s take today to imagine what it might look like for us as an alumnae community to give unwavering support to the school’s staff as they wrestle with these questions.

The second way that Burke’s can serve a public purpose now rests with us, the alumnae. All of us can carry forward the strength of our education to serve others. All of us were encouraged at Burke’s. All of us were empowered. We now have the incredible opportunity to pay that forward, and to broaden the circle of opportunity for others. To do this, we must be willing to ask ourselves hard questions about how we work, donate, vote, parent, and play. Organizations like Aim High, like College Track, that are working to improve educational opportunities for students must be able to rely on the leadership of women like us.

Marilyn is very fond of her grandchildren, who spend time at her and Jim’s house in Bend. She wishes her granddaughter could go to Burke’s as she has very fond memories of her years there.

SUSAN MCNABB COOK: “I live in the Zuni Mountains in New Mexico in a round straw bale house I designed. I am an active organic gardener and write about sustainable farming and clean food. I call my place the ’Round to it House and Garden — it took me along time to get here.”

This summer, she plans on getting licensed as a clinical psychologist to practice in San Francisco and the East Bay. CLASS OF 2008 TIFFANY MILLER says, “I’m living in San Francisco (actually just down the road from Burke’s). I am managing a restaurant called Lazy Bear here in the city. We just received our second Michelin star. I would love to

T

hough she had graduated from Burke’s nearly 40 years earlier, a student artwork by Jane Standifer ’36 made an appearance on the cover of the 1975 edition of Works & Days.

Rendered in gold on a green background, the woodblock print depicts the courtyard at Burke’s previous home on Jackson Street in the last yearbook before the building turned over to University High School.

It was not the first time the image had appeared in the yearbook, however. Titled “The Patio Looking South,” the meticulously detailed print initially debuted in Jane’s senior yearbook in 1936. And it wasn’t the only one — each section is demarcated by other students’ black-and-white pieces. Frances May Corse ’36 carved lines into wood that call forth the old Library, while Julieanne Baker ’37 did the opposite of Jane with “The Patio Looking North.”

Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, these stylized etchings made regular appearances in Works & Days.

You can see interpretations of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Palace of Fine Arts, and Mission Dolores, as well as more abstract pieces. Many seem to carry Art Deco flourishes that characterized many creative works of that era.

Only a handful of the original blocks still remain in the Burke’s archives, including “The Patio Looking South,” but all of them illustrate some element of the broader campus. We know that a block showing the nursery school and kindergarten buildings on our current Sea Cliff property was done by Jayne Harper ’38, but the others don’t indicate authorship in the carvings themselves. Even Jane Standifer’s block only bears the markings of “J.S.” and “Miss Burke’s School” written across the back.

That wasn’t enough, though, to stop her beautiful work from echoing through the decades.

Tracing Burke’s

ROOTS THE GANTNER FAMILY

S

tarting this fall, there will be at least three students on campus who can trace their lineage back to the very beginnings of Burke’s. Lucy ’20, Maren ’26, and Roya ’26 — the daughters of Rudy Samuels and Benicia Gantner ’84 — come from a family where five generations have attended the school, including a Burke’s boy.

Yes, their grandfather John M. Gantner was one of the few male students who attended Burke’s as a youngster, when the current Sea Cliff campus hosted a coed nursery school and kindergarten program in the 1940s.

But even more deeply ingrained into the Burke’s lore is Lucy, Maren, and Roya’s third great grandmother, Dr. Florence Nightingale Ward, who was a prominent

physician in San Francisco. Her two daughters, Dorothy Ward Erskine ’14 and Jean Ward Wolff ’16, were among Katherine Delmar Burke’s “charter children.” “[Katherine Delmar Burke] became acquainted with my mother because she taught me at school, and she said she wanted to found her own school someday,” said Dorothy Ward Erskine ’14 in an interview recorded in 1979. (She died in 1982.) “So my mother lent her some money and encouraged her to do so, and that was the beginning of Burke’s School.”

After becoming one of the first Burke’s graduates, Dorothy was one of the first people to take up the mantle of environmental conservation in the Bay Area, founding the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association (SPUR) and the Greenbelt Alliance. There’s even a Dorothy Erskine Park at Martha Avenue and Baden Street in the Outer Mission.

Dorothy’s daughter Florence Erskine Gantner Sinton ’32 continued doing impressive things in the city — she was the first female history professor at San Francisco City College.

Her first husband, John O. Gantner, Jr., was the brother of another Burke’s alumna: Adela (Della) Carrillo Gantner ’31, who is credited with writing the Burke’s school song and setting it to a tune she picked up while attending Stanford.

Indeed, the Gantner family has deep roots both in San Francisco and at Burke’s. But thanks to Adela and John O.

Gantner’s mother, Adela Vallejo Gantner, those roots go back to before California was even a state. Adela Vallejo Gantner was a direct descendant of the Californio Ignacio Vicente Vallejo, a Spanish colonist in the Napa-Sonoma region, and she was related to Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo and his wife, Francisca Benicia Carrillo, each of whom lent their name to the cities that still stand in Solano County.

That history is something the modern-day Benicia has always appreciated. “The women in my own family who made Burke’s a possibility for me were stubborn and strong. They knew that by creating a path for themselves in the world through education, they created a path for others, and perhaps most importantly, the possibilities for multiple paths,” she says. “Like a family tree, whose roots spread as wide as they do deep, the paths of Burke’s girls then and now are myriad and migrate outward.”
