THE HEAD

of

SCHOOL

ust after the 2016-17 school year concluded, I traveled to Washington, D.C. to attend the National Coalition of Girls Schools’ annual conference. I was there with Spanish teacher Anthony Sabedra and Director of Admissions Sheika Luc, and I was honored to co-present a session with Sheika and our admissions consultant Dana Nelson Isaacs on our admissions practices. Presenting was both exciting and fun, and Sheika crushed it!

We are deeply grateful to the

● • Burke’s is located in one of the most forward-thinking cities in the world. ● • Our approach is all about what is best for girls. ● • We are committed to the development of the whole child – socially, emotionally, physically, and academically.

grandparents, parents of

Beyond that, though, It was my first time attending the NCGS conference, and it was outstanding! The speakers and workshops were all great, and I think that’s due in part to the organization’s mission: to support, grow, and promote girls’ education. I found myself listening intently to presentations and engaging with other educators who deeply align with our mission to educate, encourage, and empower girls. It was exciting and inspiring to interact with like-minded people, with those who are also fully invested in girls’ schools. We all know that this work is vital, relevant, and important at this point in history.

There are few schools like ours, and this is by design. We are different because we strive for something better. Bottom line, the most important part of the work we do any year is not to forget how important and vital our mission is, and to live and embrace it for our the 400 girls who go here.

the school during our fiscal year

Being in D.C. also brought into stark relief that our mission is especially important during this time of incredible insecurity and closed minds. Our nation and our world are deeply unsettled, to say the least, and navigating this turmoil can be challenging as the landscape seems to change every day. But as I took in all that the conference had to offer, I thought about Burke’s, and it reminded me how exceptionally lucky I feel to work with the community that surrounds me every day. At this school, in this city, at this time. Our girls can have a tremendous impact on the future, and we are preparing them to do just that. Burke’s embraces our opportunity and responsibility to develop young women who will both form and

Though we are living in unsettled times, I take solace in and inspiration from the fact that you believe in our mission as strongly as we do, because we cannot do the things that make Burke’s Burke’s without your support. We couldn’t innovate cutting-edge curricula without your support of professional development. We couldn’t expose our students to a broad range of perspectives and experiences without dollars going to the Annual Fund. We couldn’t run our school on a day-to-day basis without the many volunteers who serve lunches, run drop-off every morning, reshelve books in the Library, and so much more!

generous parents, alumnae, alumnae, faculty, staff, foundations, and other friends of Burke’s who contributed to from July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017. While we have made every effort to ensure the accuracy of the donor lists in this Annual Report, please accept our apologies for any mistake or omission and contact the Advancement Office at 415.751.0177 to let us know of the error.

Your confidence in what we are doing is so gratifying, especially in the face of what’s happening in the larger world. Together, we can make a world where Burke’s girls lead, invent, and inspire us to be better. Thank you.

BOARD

of

TRUSTEES

n behalf of Burke’s Board of Trustees, we are proud to present to our community the Annual Report for 2016-2017. We would like to thank everyone who made this school year such a successful one! The statistics, summaries, and honor rolls on the following pages highlight the contributions made by parents, faculty, staff, alumnae, grandparents, and parents of alumnae—both as financial supporters and as volunteers, and they demonstrate the great pride and ownership that we all take in creating and sustaining this phenomenal school. We are particularly moved by the 100% parent participation in both the Annual Fund and in our eighth-grade class gift for the second year in a row. The participation of 100% of Burke’s faculty and staff in the Annual fund was also quite exciting. Similarly, the number of people who volunteer their time not only for these fundraising initiatives, but for the broad range of activities that happen on campus every day is exceptional. Take a look at page 4 to see the many names of those who serve on the Parents’ Association board, keeping in mind that many more people fill the ranks of our dedicated volunteers! We would like to bestow special thanks to the following parents who held leadership roles 2016-17 school year: ● • Parents’ Association: Jennifer McClanahan-Flint (President), Elizabeth Sparks ’86 (Vice President), Jeannie Whelan (Secretary), and Robert Hoffmeister (Treasurer) ● •A nnual Fund: Co-Chairs Justin Renaudin, Yvo Smit, and Julie Vlcek-Burke ● •C lass of 2017 Leadership Fund: Co-Chairs Leith Barry, Richard Lee Davis, Art Fletcher, John Hockin, Jennifer Beauné Roe, and Chip Wadsworth ● •F amily Festival 2016: Chair Carolyn Jasik ● •D inner Auction 2017: Co-Chairs Brad DeJean, Deb Frederick, Ritu Nagpal, and Morgan Thorne

Additionally, we extend a final thank-you to those members of the Board of Trustees who have completed their service in the 2016-17 school year: Evie Davis (President), Wells Blaxter, Travis Brownley, Laura Brugger, Leigh Matthes, and MacGregor Read. These dedicated individuals guided the school through our leadership transition and crafted our current strategic plan: Our Community. Our Campus. Our Commitment. We are extremely grateful for their enduring contributions to Burke’s. Along with our grateful farewells to former members, we enthusiastically welcome six new faces to the Burke’s Board of Trustees: Clara Abecassis ’92, Leith Barry, Carolyn Jasik, Jennifer McClanahan-Flint, Tod Sacerdoti, and Yvo Smit. Additionally, four board members have renewed for a second three-year term: Anna Banks ’83, Gabrielle Kivitz ’89, Matthew Perry, and Venkatesh Reddy. We are thankful for their commitment to identify and meet the longterm strategic needs of Burke’s, and to support our Head of School Michele Williams. The 2016-17 school year was the third year in our charted four-year Strategic Plan. Some key accomplishments included the completion and mapping of the curricular scope and sequence for grades K-8, the launch of a pilot bus program to ease the commutes of students from across the city, and the thoughtful launch of new uniform options. With our engaged community of parents and alumnae, inspired faculty, knowledgeable staff, and strong leadership under Michele Williams, the school year was successful by all measures in carrying out our important mission to educate, encourage, and empower girls. We are confident Burke’s is on track for another strong year. Gratefully,

Nel Ellwein President

Family Festival In its 86th year, the Burke’s Family Festival is a storied tradition that’s truly part of San Francisco. What happened on campus on Saturday, October 21, 2017, lived up to that, and more! Under beautiful skies, Burke’s girls, their families, and alumnae decorated pumpkins, tried out temporary tattoos, sang their hearts out at karaoke, created in Makery City, played all sorts of games, ate amazing food...and that’s just a fraction of all of the action. And what’s most impressive is that all of you are responsible for making it happen.

GAMES Kelly French Stefanie Wong-Engle

Our Festival Chair, Carolyn Jasik, bravely stepped forward to steer the event for the second year in a row, and she and her team did an incredible job. Many thanks to her and her amazing committee chairs.

And to all of Burke’s parents — whether you set up on Friday, manned a booth during Festival, or took everything down afterward — your efforts have not gone unnoticed. Thank you for keeping this tradition thriving for another year!

2017 DINNER AUCTION

BURKE’S AT SEA! he good ship Burke’s came into port at Bimbo’s on the night of Saturday, April 1, and what a splash landing we made! Thank you to all who walked the plank and came out to toast our 400 girls and ensure smooth sailing throughout their nine years at Burke’s. A big thank-you to our captains and cruise directors — Brad DeJean, Deb Frederick, Ritu Nagpal, and Morgan Thorne — for keeping their heads above water and paddling us toward our fabulous final destination. And we are so grateful for all of the people working below decks to keep this ship on an even keel, whether they coordinated items for our Live and Online Auctions, collected donated wine, decorated the venue, and so much more. Without all of them, this Auction would have been dead in the water!

THE BARBARA BURKE LEGACY SOCIETY he Barbara Burke Legacy Society was established to honor those who have made the decision to support the vision and mission of the Katherine Delmar Burke School by including Burke’s in their estate plans. This may be through the inclusion of a bequest provision in a will or living trust, through a charitable lead trust or life income gift, or by naming the school as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy. Members of the Barbara Burke Legacy Society can be assured that their future gifts held as endowment will support the school’s mission in perpetuity and enable Burke’s to flourish as one of the leading girls’ schools in the country.

COMMITTEE CO-CHAIRS

THE CLASS OF 2017

LEADERSHIP

FUND

This was the fourth year of Burke’s reinstated eighth-grade class gift, which surpassed its goal of $200,000 with a final total of $200,476 — and 100% parent participation! This effort was organized by eighth-grade class parent volunteers, who decided at an opening meeting on November 7, 2016, to name the effort The Class of 2017 Leadership Fund. The gift was presented at Pansy Day on June 7 with the hope that the 50 graduating eighth graders will one day contribute to this fund, giving back to the school that helped lay the foundation for who they will become.

THE IMPORTANCE OF ENDOWMENT

ENDOWMENT AND RESTRICTED FUNDS Burke’s is indebted to those alumnae, parents, grandparents, foundations, and friends of the school who have provided endowment and restricted support to the school by contributing to these named funds, new and longstanding. These funds allow Burke’s to continue to fulfill its mission by providing ongoing support for financial aid, professional development, innovative programs, and faculty compensation.

In this ever-changing economic environment, endowment has never been more important. Endowment ensures excellence and provides a margin of security against uncertainty. Without adequate, wisely-invested endowment funds, an institution is forever at the mercy of conditions beyond its control, such as economic, philanthropic, and demographic fluctuations, and unforeseen catastrophic events. A strong endowment is the mark of an esteemed and enduring institution. Income from the endowment allows Burke’s to maintain its financial equilibrium while allowing for innovation.

HOW TO ESTABLISH AN ENDOWED FUND We believe that giving should be a shared experience, one that benefits both the donor and the institution. Creating a named endowment fund is one of the best ways to forge a permanent, personal connection to Burke’s. These investments in the school not only serve to honor donors, they serve as tributes to others and help to encourage gifts as models of philanthropy that will become part of the everyday landscape of Burke’s. Endowment funds are established in perpetuity and are recognized each year in the school’s Annual Report. For more information on contributing to an existing fund or establishing a permanent endowed fund, please contact Selena Shadle, Director of Advancement, at 415.666.3204 or selena@kdbs.org.

ANNUAL REPORT 2016-17

2016-17

ANNUAL FUND he following reflects gifts received between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017 to the 201617 Annual Fund. Participation at any level is greatly appreciated. For the second time in Burke’s history, our current parents joined our faculty, staff, and trustees with 100% participation in the Annual Fund. We are incredibly grateful for this amazing show of support in the Burke’s mission, and your contributions help us educate, encourage, and empower each and every one of our 400 girls. Your generosity bridges the difference between tuition revenue and the true cost of educating our students, and this year, that meant an additional $1.327 million toward the Burke’s operating budget. Thanks to each and every one of you.

SECURITIES & PROPERTY Gifts of stocks, other securities, or property have two significant advantages to the donor—they are tax deductible for the full fair market value of the gift when it is made, and the donor does not pay capital gains on the appreciated value of the stock or property. Contact the Advancement Office for more information on making a gift of securities or property.

PLANNED GIVING

CASH, CHECK, OR CREDIT CARD Gifts of cash, typically payable by check, and credit card gifts are tax deductible and provide immediate funds to the school. The easiest way to give is online at www.kdbs.org/give. You can also send a check to: Katherine Delmar Burke School Advancement Office 7070 California Street San Francisco, CA 94121

MATCHING GIFTS Many companies offer their employees the opportunity to double or, in some cases, triple their gifts to certain programs or organizations by matching them. Please check with your employer about its Matching Gift Program.

The Barbara Burke Legacy Society honors alumnae, past parents, grandparents, current parents, and friends who have remembered Burke’s by bequest in their estate plans or who have made a life income gift or other type of planned gift. You can become a member by:

Please notify the Advancement Office if you have made a deferred or planned gift to Burke’s so that you will be included in The Barbara Burke Legacy Society.

OTHER DEFERRED GIFTS It is possible to make gifts of property that may allow income tax benefits for the donor during his or her lifetime, may be used during the lifetime of the donor, and which would revert to Burke’s, with possible estate tax savings. Institutions can achieve stability and growth through planned giving. Contact your tax adviser for specific advice that relates to your particular circumstances.

GIFTS IN KIND

• placing Burke’s in your will • making Burke’s the beneficiary of a retirement account • making a gift of a life insurance policy (a gift of life insurance can result in tax savings and can be made through an existing or a new life insurance policy) • establishing a charitable trust • making a gift of real estate or other tangible property

Burke’s welcomes donations such as classroom supplies, athletic equipment, and other items related to the educational program, as well as donations of auction items to the annual Dinner Auction. Gift value is determined by the donor through appraisal or a record of purchase. Please contact the Advancement Office if you would like to make a gift in kind.

Each of these gifts can result in substantial tax savings for the donor. Please consult the Advancement Office or your tax adviser for more information.

For more information about making a gift of any type, please contact Selena Shadle, Director of Advancement, at 415.666.3204 or selena@kdbs.org. To make a gift online, please visit www.kdbs.org/give.
