Head of School Dear Burke’s Community, I’m excited to introduce my first KayDeeBee! For me, this has been a year of observing, listening, and assessing the exceptional education at this school. I am just beginning to understand the deep history of Burke’s in relation to San Francisco and girls’ education as a whole. I have greatly enjoyed getting to know this community—meeting with grandparents, our current families, our alumnae and our girls. Some of the highlights of my year include getting to know alumnae, both those who have stopped by campus and others who have attended events, including Family Festival, and having lunch with a group of alumnae in Washington DC this past January. I have gained a real appreciation and respect for the “Burke’s Girl”—whether a current student or a graduate from 1943.

One of my great joys this school year has been taking the time to visit every classroom, to observe teachers who show the utmost care about what it means to be a 21st-century learner and educator.

It is this unparalleled commitment to their craft that has inspired the year’s theme of “excellence in teaching.” In this magazine, we will highlight the fundamental dedication by our faculty to instill 21st-century learning skills in the classroom while nurturing our remarkable girls to have a sense of ownership over their own learning process. This is perhaps the characteristic of a Burke’s girl that has struck me the most over the past school year. Not only do our girls understand their own learning styles, but they are empowered to self-advocate in order to do their very best inside and outside of the classroom. I witness this every day—a Burke’s girl has the confidence to ask questions, explore new ideas, and to take a stand for her own opinions and beliefs. For me, there is nothing more inspiring.

I hope that you enjoy this issue of the KayDeeBee and that you learn something new about the many activities and interests of our girls and our alumnae. We will continue to share more of this with you in future magazines, as well as in Broadcast Burke’s, our new video updates, and in other communications throughout the year.

Alumnae Board President Dear Alumnae, As President of the Burke’s Alumnae Board, I have had the opportunity to view our revered school through a new lens. Though we have experienced much transition within the past few years, it is when change happens that tradition shines. The essence of Burke’s—educating, encouraging and empowering girls—remains as true today as it did when Miss Burke’s started her school 104 years ago.

This year, we welcomed Michele Williams as our new Head of School. Hailing from the Stevenson School, Michele brings with her over 20 years of educational experience as a teacher, coach, administrator and parent. With the mission of making “every day the best day for our girls,” she has proven to be a perfect fit at Burke’s. With a passion for highlighting great teaching and being in the classroom as much as possible, Michele has also been an advocate for the growth and success of our Alumnae Program. I am excited to see how the school evolves under Michele’s leadership and vision, as Burke’s continues to incorporate 21st-century learning and skill sets to educate, encourage and empower its girls.

In addition to welcoming our new Head of School, I am pleased to announce that Burke’s has completed the search and purchase of a Head House. This is a particularly special achievement as it was a collaboration of the Burke’s community: parents, grandparents and alumnae who helped complete this project that not only is financially beneficial to us in the long-term, but allows Burke’s to continue to be one of the top independent schools. Thank you to all of our alumnae who supported this effort.

There are pages of alumnae notes to thumb through, and I, for one, have greatly enjoyed reading about the interesting lives of generations of Burke’s women.

How We Learn:

Burke’s Model for the 21st Century Today’s students stand to inherit and shape a world transformed by exponential change. If a 20th-century world felt finite and knowable the 21st-century is a universe of expanding information, connection, challenges and unknowns. There simply is no line in the sand between the old century and the new.

In 2009, the Katherine Delmar Burke School joined a national conversation about the everchanging demands of the 21st century and the role of education in preparing students to meet those demands.

What started as a ‘grass-roots’ faculty driven discussion, flowed up to a formalized 21st-century committee comprised of faculty and staff and recently grew to be a Board of Trustees initiative. Over the course of several years our model was devised with input from all constituents of our community and beyond.

Our model is in concert with our mission statement, takes into account our K-8 students, and is mindful of an allgirls education while also adaptive to all aspects of school life. We are preparing our students to be learners for life.

During the past few decades there has been a paradigm shift in education. The old model of the “sage on the stage” has now become the “guide on the side.” How we perceive a classroom, its location,makeup and outcomes is constantly changing.

It is with that knowledge that we decided, as an institution of learning, to create a model that not only guides our faculty and students, but also demonstrates to the community-at-large how a 21st-century student learns. From small moments of reading pleasure to grand productions such as the eighth grade play, Burke’s students exhibit creativity, communication and collaboration.

A unit on painting vegetables in art class may be about watercolors and nutrition, or a performance on circus arts may ask girls to balance and twirl, but in both art and physical education girls are practicing the building blocks of 21st-century Learning. They are learning about community, taking risks and creating projects across multiple disciplines.

A Model for 21st Century Learning

Since the inception of our model, other schools and education resources have adopted our guide and conferred with Burke’s faculty on introducing the model to their schools. Our work has been featured in conferences throughout the country and the world—New York City, Washington D.C., Hong Kong and South Africa. The Burke’s model of learning has gone global.

From Kindergarten through eighth grade, whether in music class or math, students express themselves in unique ways. Using the building blocks and bridges in the Burke’s model for 21st-century learning, our students have been aided in their own personal expression, self-advocacy and appreciation of learning. We invite you to learn more about our model (see above) and in all the examples from everyday life at Burke’s.

The left side of the model indentifies our learning community and includes personal exploration and collaboration as building blocks, as well as empathy and ethics as bridges. The right side of the framework highlights the learning process: play, design, risk-taking and problem-solving.

The bottom focuses on purpose in 21st-century learning. Students come to understand themselves as learners and how that understanding can be applied for good purpose, whether personal satisfaction or for the common good.

ExploraVision

Burke’s sixth graders took on the lofty challenge of designing new technologies for 20 years into the future through the Toshiba ExploraVision project.

Part of a national competition, the project integrated science content with design thinking, engineering, technology, research, critical thinking, and creativity.

The girls researched the history of a current technology, and then participated in a “Design Thinking” workshop to identify a need and develop a new technology. From thinking about the advancements needed to make a nano-bot chemotherapy treatment feasible to considering the drawbacks of a smart airbag system, the girls both envisioned the scientific breakthroughs and considered the positive and

negative consequences of their designs. Some groups even designed using 3-D printer prototypes to help communicate and test their ideas. The project was co-lead by National Board Certified Science Teacher Michael Harms and Upper School Technology Specialist Marilyn Schaumburg. In Burke’s first year participating in the project, we received an impressive seven honorable mentions, a distinction given to the top ten percent of all ExploraVision projects submitted.

Island of the Blue Dolphins

During their last year in Lower School, fourth graders enjoy an integrated curriculum that revolves around the novel, Island of the Blue Dolphins. This year the girls read the book and then wrote and performed a play inspired by this Newbury novel. Taking on the roles of writers, actors and directors, the girls then recorded their scenes on iPads while on a field trip to Tennessee Valley near the Marin Headlands. The resulting videos were taken back to the technology lab and edited to create a trailer for the upcoming play about Island of the Blue Dolphins.

Additionally, the novel was the centerpiece of another video project completed in the Library and

Technology class. Students researched animals from the Channel Islands along the Southern California coast. They then created persuasive arguments as to why to rename the novel in honor of their animals, based on each animal’s ability to adapt to the habitat—adaptation being a major theme in the book.

Island of the Blue Dolphins is a book read by students in elementary school for decades. Using our 21stcentury learning model, Burke’s teachers enhanced the relevancy of this wonderful book by coupling it with innovative culminating projects to engage our girls and further their proficiency in the process of learning. Faculty & Staff MILESTONES

retiring faculty At the end of the 2012–2013 school year, we will say goodbye to two long-tenured members of the Burke’s community: Judi Dittmer and Linda Gore. Thank you so much for your dedication and love of Burke’s and its girls.

This year marks Judi Dittmer’s 28th year teaching at Burke’s. Judi has been a third grade teacher and currently is one of the Lower School P.E. instructors. After Burke’s, Judi will continue to travel the world and is grateful for her “fabulous and

interesting” time here. Challenge Day is especially memorable for Judi as, “it is where educating, encouraging (each other) and empowering has been very apparent.”

Linda Gore has worked at Burke’s for 29 years as the long-time K-8 counselor and more recently the Lower School counselor. Linda has spent the last 50 years in education and describes her experience at Burke’s as “transformative”. Linda adds, “My lasting memories will always be of the quiet times spent one-on-one with

a student, teacher or parent. There were sad times and happy times—all in all the best of times.” B

Burke’s New Delmar House This past October, Burke’s closed escrow on a new house that will become a part of the everyday fabric of our community for our girls, our faculty and staff, and our alumnae for years to come. This is not just a purchase of a home; it is an extension of our campus, both for our girls now and in the future.

In the spring of 2012, Burke’s engaged in a short-term, major gift effort to raise funds for a community home that would enhance school life, contribute to long-term financial sustainability of the school and help attract and retain outstanding heads for the next 100 hundred years.

This will be a multipurpose property providing a meaningful and intimate venue for school receptions and events. From breakfasts with student leaders and meetings with faculty and staff, to receptions for alumnae, admissions events, seminars for educators and leadership dinners, the house will contribute significantly to the life of our school, broadening the range and number of community events that we can host each year.

Now for the exciting details… the home is located on 30th Avenue and is within walking distance of campus. The house has an exceptional layout for entertaining members of our community as well as a solid living environment for a family. With the help of our real estate agent and current parent, Todd Gray of McGuire Real Estate, we were able to secure the home in an off-market transaction and schedule a summer 2013 movein date. The current owner will remain in the home through the spring, after which we look forward to having our community spend time in the new residence.

We feel very fortunate to acquire this multi-functioning space for Burke’s.

This purchase will save the school money on an annual operating basis, even after paying mortgage, taxes and maintenance costs. Simply stated, it was the right time for Burke’s to buy. B

Alumnae Luncheon 2013 On May 11, 2012, more than 100 alumnae from 1947 to 2001 attended our Alumnae Luncheon at the Metropolitan Club in downtown San Francisco. The annual luncheon celebrated all Burke’s alumnae with special recognition for the reunion classes ending in ’2 and ’7. The 2012 Distinguished Alumna recipient, Pauline Watts, was honored and remarked on her twelve years at Burke’s and her journey back to San Francisco. Distinguished Alumna: Pauline Moffitt Watts ’66

The Katherine Delmar Burke School Distinguished Alumna Award is given each year to an alumna who embodies the values at the heart of the school’s mission to educate, encourage and empower girls. The recipient exemplifies a life of learning, service to community, individuality and the ability to make a difference in the world.

The 2012 Distinguished Alumna Award was presented to Pauline Moffitt Watts ’66. Louise is a doctor and her book is a collection of fascinating and touching stories based on her experiences as a geriatrician. Megan, our youngest, is living in Chico, CA with husband Chris, one son, and two little girls. They all come to the beach each summer (quite a production around here during those weeks) and we travel to Chico and St. Louis a couple of times each year. alice russel-shapiro ’65 I have retired after a long career in landscape architecture doing residential designbuild. Husband Bill is still working in internet space (GM of Rent.com) and a year ago we adopted a cute terrier mix, named Cooper, who has changed our lives! We were able to take some fun trips last year, most notably to India over the holidays, and now plan to enjoy “stay-cations” for awhile! Tom’s work is going well, and I’m enjoying my service on the Hillsborough City School Board and with the National Charity League. Nat is now running the Health Care Fraud Unit for the Boston US Attorney’s Office. I’m still with the Child Abuse Unit in the Middlesex DA’s Office. I gave up trials for the school year to spend more time with Jackson so I find myself running between grand jury and Lego Club, swim team practice, and play dates. It was an off the charts crazy few months—the criminals don’t seem to want to go out of business—but I’m enjoying the extra time at home so all is good! Deborah Kan ’82, Executive Producer of the Wall Street Journal in Asia Visits Burke’s Deborah Kan ’82 visited Burke’s this February for the first time since graduating over 30 years ago.

Deborah returned to her alma mater from Hong Kong to share with the Upper School girls her adventures of broadcast journalism. She is currently the Executive Producer for the Wall Street Journal in Asia and has been working in broadcast and print news for over 15 years.

As Deborah walked through the first half of campus and into the lunchroom, memories of being a young Burke’s girl arose.

While she set up her presentation before the assembly, Deborah realized how much smaller everything about the school seemed now that she was an adult, and yet it all still seemed the same.

Though Deborah is extremely accomplished, her stories to the girls were about her trials of interviewing for jobs, and the struggles of learning the ropes of broadcasting. Deborah stressed how hard she had to work to rise above the initial setbacks and how important it is to look at your setbacks as fuel to the fire of success.
