Several special spirit days in observance of the MLB playoffs brought out lots of black and orange gear, including jerseys from players from Pence to Posey as well as plenty of panda hats. Head of School Michele Williams even got in on it when she was the surprise reader in the K-Red classroom. Several games were conveniently underway around noon Pacific time, leading to lots of big cheers from the Lunchroom.

Figments of imagination, such as this Frankensteinesque mechanical “chef,” come to life in the safe confines of the Makery. In its second full year at Burke’s, the Makery revolutionizes the standard tech lab into a space where learning is hands on with materials that range from the mechanical to the artsy. This model of projectbased learning has been so successful at Burke’s that the concept is inching its way back to the classroom so every space becomes a Makery of its own.

Whole Lotta’ Shaking Going On Eighth graders took part in a girls-only design/engineering challenge at the California Academy of Sciences on January 21, 2014. Working with girls from Bayview’s KIPP School, the students spent a whole day learning about plate tectonics and earthquakes. They then used everyday objects like straws and paperclips to make models of a two-story building that could withstand an 8.5-magnitude quake, and tested the structures on a shake table. KGO Channel 7 News shared the story on its 5 p.m. newscast that evening.

Lions Welcome New Year Clashing cymbals and a rhythmic drumbeat accompanied five pairs of lion dancers in celebration of Lunar New Year. Third-grade students did double duty on February 13, 2014 when they performed at Burke’s — distributing treats to their classmates in the process — and then went to the Richmond District Neighborhood Center (RDNC) to dance for several hundred seniors and distribute food at the pantry.

Soccer Champions Burke’s Varsity Green soccer team beat Oakland’s Head-Royce School by a score of 3-2 in an exciting overtime finish on May 7, winning the Bay Area Interscholastic League (BAIAL) Championship for 2014.

Grandparents Go Back to School More than 300 guests turned out for Grandparents’ & Special Friends’ Day on May 9. After a catered lunch and a talk from Head of School Michele Williams, they got to sample a typical school day by attending an assembly in the Gym and then accompanying their students to class, where some intense assignments awaited them. GREETINGS FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL

Michele’s Message I T ’ S B E E N A T O U G H Y E A R for women and girls, both around the world and in our own backyard. Between the need for hashtags like #BringBackOurGirls, to many industries (including tech) being led nearly exclusively by men, headlines still continually illustrate the disadvantage our daughters face just for being born female. The Burke’s Parent Ed committee recently hosted Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the documentary filmmaker of titles such as Miss Representation, which demonstrates how the decks are stacked against young girls growing up in a society that values their bodies and demeans their intellects. While Miss Representation was released in 2011, the examples it includes are just as easy to locate in today’s pop culture. That culture might also insist on identifying Jennifer Siebel Newsom as the wife of a former San Francisco mayor and current lieutenant governor, though she obviously has impressive credentials of her own.

How can Burke’s respond to these forces? I’m afraid there’s no one single answer.

But we have to start somewhere. An idea that has been occupying my mind in recent months is the concept of good girls versus good people. The images conjured by the phrase “good girls” come right out of a film like Miss Representation; passive women who smile and laugh instead of expressing opinions or making waves of any kind. Good people? That’s what we want to produce at Burke’s — young adults who are kind, giving and considerate while also curious about the world and resourceful in figuring out how to fix it. And happen to be women.

Many recent activities have pursued this goal in line with our Strategic Plan, which you have likely already seen detailed in emails this past fall. The revitalized Social Emotional Learning curriculum in the Lower School is taking students through units such as gratitude and mindfulness; we’re going into the holidays with a Gratitude Tree on the walls of the Lunchroom that has spread beyond our youngest girls to the Upper School and faculty. One item that you’ll see mentioned in our cover story on the Makery, Burke’s innovation lab, is an incredible week we recently dedicated to the Hour of Code, which showed our students how the concepts of computer programming and coding are present in all areas of our curriculum. It was a marvel to see it in action, and I’m so proud of the work that went into making it a success.

Hour of Code was a concept designed by the nonprofit organization Code.org as a way to democratize the power of computing to demographics that don’t necessarily have immediate access to it, including people of color and women. It’s just one way we can live out our mission to empower our students, one which is incumbent upon us as an all-girls institution. We may not be able to turn back a cultural tide all on our own, but we can certainly try.

Lego Expo FEB 8-9, 2014

Ten Bay Area teams participated in the Junior FIRST Lego League Expo, which was hosted at Burke’s. The two Burke’s teams (comprised of first through third graders) did research on tsunamis and then created Lego models to demonstrate solutions for how people could deal with such a disaster. ExploraVision Google Glass Project

International Women’s Day

Four sixth graders were the regional winners in Toshiba/ National Science Teachers Association ExploraVision, a national science competition where the goal was to use something currently available and research how it might perform 20 years from now. The Burke’s team used Google Glass to develop visual reminders of forgotten information to help patients living with Alzheimer’s disease, an assistive technology project that its members called reMIND.

Shanna Tellerman was the guest speaker at an assembly to celebrate women’s achievements in the economy, politics and the social sphere. Her topic was “The Accidental Entrepreneur,” which centered on how she created a successful technology company right out of college and eventually became the first female partner on the Google Ventures investing team. She encouraged Burke’s students to have confidence in their abilities and to pursue their passions.

Recognized as one of Business Week’s best young entrepreneurs in 2009, Tellerman has helped lead the way for more women decision-makers in the world of venture capital and technology.

“Burke’s Roaring 20s…Dream Big!” was the event’s theme, and it was accompanied by flapper costumes and a bidding frenzy that raised more than $700,000 for financial assistance and professional development, including the Burke’s Teaching Institute. A corresponding online auction offered almost 600 items, and Raise the Paddle garnered $150,000 for professional development for our faculty. Many thanks to event chairs Thesia Bowo, Lynn Callander and Jennifer Beauné Roe for hitting it out of the park!

This annual event provides an opportunity for Burke’s girls to push themselves through a wide variety of physical activities.

Arts Festival

Students, their families and faculty members turned out for the 16th annual run/walk at Crissy Field. An exhibition of student art from all grades incorporated a variety of themes from the curriculum.

Fourth and seventh grades worked together on envisioning a better future by designing 3-D glasses.

Kindergartners explored Lunar New Year, first graders did self-portraits, second graders made sculptures of “American Women Who Made a Difference” and third graders painted Japanese-style crests on silk. Fifth graders made cigar box guitars while sixth graders designed ballgame jerseys, and eighth graders did service learning projects.

Cultural Heritage Fair

All-School Food Pantry Event

Seventh-grade history students hosted the Cultural Heritage Fair using costumes and customs to tell the stories of their forefathers and foremothers. They presented display boards illustrated with photographs, maps and timelines along with arrangements of family mementos, tools, uniforms and even food to share their cultures or families. One grade hosts a food pantry each month at the Richmond District Community Center through Burke’s Gives Back. The graduating members of the Class of 2014 performed “Seussical, the Musical” to cap their performing arts education at Burke’s.

As part of the groundswell of support for professional development that started at the Dinner Auction, educators from throughout the Bay Area joined with Burke’s teachers in the Library to share ideas and discuss classroom strategies. Many Burke’s faculty members also spent their summers pursuing a variety of enriching professional development experiences across the United States and around the world.

A long design and publishing process came to an end as a new Burke’s website (www.kdbs.org) launched to the larger community and the outside public. The site features bigger photos, streamlined navigation, up-to-date news articles on the homepage and a look that reflects the great things that are happening on campus and in our classrooms. The new platform, powered by the company Whipple Hill, also enables more robust communications between parents and teachers.

Welcome Assembly

Lower School Picnic

The youngest first grader and the oldest eighth grader marked the start of the school year at the Opening All-School Assembly with the ringing of gongs. To kick off the festivities, the new kindergarteners were led into the Gymnasium by their teachers while the assembled students and faculty members serenaded the youngsters, and to end, the eighth graders exited through an archway formed by their teachers.

Breast Cancer Awareness

Festival

The community service officers for Youth Voice held a fundraiser in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month to gather money for mammograms for less fortunate women. They collaborated with Athletic Director Ashling Bryant to produce brochures, posters, T-shirts and hair ribbons to raise awareness of the disease at a volleyball game against the FrenchAmerican International School.

Chaired by parent Sean Visser, Family Festival 2014 went off without a hitch. Rain threatened to wash away the hard work of the many volunteers who put Family Festival 2014 together, but thankfully, after a morning shower, the skies cleared up! Among those volunteers were a number of alumnae who staffed the check-in table and the Pumpkin Patch, ensuring that the day ran smoothly for all who attended. Thanks as well to Deirdre Visser ‘84, who created the hilarious “Mount Burkesmore” banner at the photo booth.

Dia de los Muertos

Hidden Child of Holocaust

Fifth, sixth and seventh graders in Emily Otero’s Spanish classes researched and established an altar to commemorate the holiday of Dia de los Muertos on the second floor of the Upper School building. The Burke’s altar stayed true to custom, with the inclusion of items such as marigolds, candles, photos of loved ones and pan de muerto, or “bread of the dead.”

There aren’t many who can still speak first-hand about the events of World War II and the Holocaust, and one came to Burke’s to share her story with 8th graders.

AnneMarie Yellin, a “hidden child” of the Holocaust, spoke about her experiences in Belgium after her family fled from her home in Germany. Her father sent her to a convent after the Nazis invaded Belgium in 1940, and she eventually married and settled in San Francisco in 1950.

FAREWELL

mrs. coleman retires

For 32 years, Elizabeth Coleman was the friendly face visitors and regulars alike first encountered when coming onto campus.

IN AN OFFICE SETTING , a receptionist typically handles administrative duties, such as scheduling appointments, greeting visitors and answering the telephone.

In a school, the job description expands exponentially: helping students, soothing parents, directing traffic and dispensing hugs, and even performing nursing duties such as taking temperatures and treating scraped knees. At Burke’s, the position also plans parties for events like the graduation luncheon.

For 32 years, Elizabeth Coleman accomplished this gracefully with her calm demeanor and pleasant voice in the front office at Burke’s. Since 1982, she had been the friendly face visitors and regulars alike first encountered when coming onto campus. That was, until this past June, when she retired. In her time at Burke’s, she has seen more than 1,200 girls graduate, including her own daughter, Ariane Coleman Hogan ’85.

Elizabeth, or Mrs. Coleman to the students, says that what she misses the most are the girls. “I just really enjoyed being there for the families,” she says. The girls feel the same way about this beloved icon; she has always been a favorite guest at the alumnae luncheon.

“She has a huge heart and she was always there,” recalls Kirsten Lewis ’95.

As one parent says, she always knows “just the right thing to do. She is the heart and soul of the school.” In announcing Elizabeth’s retirement, Head of School Michele Williams praised her for her high level of professionalism and being an integral member of the community for nearly a third of a century. A memory book with messages from students, parents, teachers and staff was presented to her at the end of the 2013-2014 school year, and she was applauded at the final Lower School Assembly of the year and at Pansy Day. Retirement for Elizabeth has meant a chance to travel. She recently came back from a Rhine river cruise that she described as “wonderful,” and she looks forward to exercising and visiting with relatives — as well as more travel.

School, it came roaring back as part of a Burke’s Families event. And now, it’s one of the first true signs for a graduating student that her time at Burke’s is coming to an end.

The Maypole Dance itself dates back to medieval Europe, and it’s usually performed in the spring. Multicolored ribbons are attached to the top of a tree or pole. Dancers then wind and unwind the ribbons, weaving them into intricate patterns. One misstep can create a chain of confusion.

According to eighth-grade advisor Susan Deemer: “The girls need to stay in rhythm with the music and synchronize their hands with their feet. They need to work together and it takes some time for them to settle into the dance, learn the routine and trust the process.”

SOME MEMORIES blur with time, but the rites and traditions that mark a passage tend to stay with us. The Maypole ceremony at Burke’s goes as far back as 1941, and while the exact origins of it are murky, sixth graders definitely performed it as part of the Lower School Picnic. While the Maypole faded for a few years in 1975 after the Lower School adjusted to cap at the fourth grade, eighth graders took up the tradition on and off for several years, and during Jessie-Lea Abbott’s time as Head of

The girls usually have four practice sessions. sessions. Using a “Grand Chain” step accompanied by English Renaissance music, they pass each other alternating right and left shoulders, lifting the ribbons under and over to create a basket weave pattern.

Unweaving is the harder part of the process and requires focus to stay in sync. The ribbon colors are, of course, green and gold.

It can also be an emotional moment for an eighth grader. “For some, finishing the dance is a sudden realization that their time at Burke’s as a student is getting very short,” Susan says. “After the dance, the girls circle up under the pavilion in front of the office, put their arms around each other and celebrate! It’s a first of many emotional moments for many of them — lots of hugs, smiles and some tears.”

The innovation of Burke’s Makery labs

THERE’S A PLACE on the Burke’s campus where imagination runs wild in an entirely new and different way. Come recess and lunch, students run in with an eye toward playing with robots, creating something with a 3-D printer or animating on an iPad, or even pursuing “old-school” crafts such as felting. Or, their classes come by to find innovative ways to complete projects in all manner of subject areas, both high-tech and not, leading to some truly unique results.

Since its opening in 2013, the Makery is part of an educational push at Burke’s — and across the country — to implement a style of curriculum that is not textbook-driven or fragmented, but is thematic, project-based and integrated. It’s learning through doing, where students exercise creative work towards common goals, enabled by the world we live in now and preparing for later. And, in its own way, it’s perfect for molding Burke’s girls for the 21st century.

“My hope for the first year was to create a working space for the girls where their creativity could soar, where we could provide the materials and tools to help them create whatever they envisioned,” says Marilyn Schaumburg, one of two Makery facilitators on the Burke’s campus. That hope took flight thanks to two important factors: a deep desire to update Burke’s old technology labs to something new and novel, and to funds raised through Raise the Paddle at Dinner Auction 2013.

Now, there are two Makery spaces: “Makery Down,” the bottom-floor workshop in the J Building, is more media-based, while “Makery Up,” the top-floor workshop, is

more construction/building-based. This structure allows students across grade levels to model their work for each other in a collaborative, open environment.

Both Schaumburg and Jenny Howland, the second Makery facilitator, transitioned from the old tech labs to the Makery with ease. “I had hoped to expand the choices students have to create a product,” Howland says. “I wanted to do this with new tools — such as 3-D printers, hammers, screwdrivers, needles and thread, etc.

— while teaching the baseline skills needed to use digital tools (my old job) in an authentic and integrated way.” Banks of computers were moved aside in favor of large tables where students can work in groups and bins of raw materials they can use in their projects. Technology still remains in several forms, including a 3-D printer and a smattering of computers, but their presence is intended to serve as an aid to the creative process, not to exist for technology’s sake.

And students definitely create. The projects that come through the Makery (see p. 33 for examples) engage the kinds of skills needed in STEM (science, technology, engineering

and math) subject areas, such as designing, experimenting and even failing at a project.

Building that sense of comfort in trying and tinkering not only builds a strong sense of resilience in students, but it leads to the kind of joyful learning environment that fits right in with Burke’s mission and four-year Strategic Plan: Our Community. Our Campus. Our Commitment.

According to the facilitators, that’s exactly what they’re seeing. “What I love about the girls is their willingness to try new things,” Schaumburg says. “When an eighth grader wants to build a model of a steam engine or create

lightning, it is clear they feel empowered to try anything!”

Howland adds: “Their ‘toolbox’ of available materials and skills has expanded. They will ask for a specific tool, like the pipe wrench, or a specific material, like LEDs or a motor, as they need them for projects. In general, they will be able to try something one way, see it doesn’t work and try it another way.”

In the future, that “toolbox” will go on tour as the Makery mindset continues to evolve and meet students right in their classrooms.

in the form of flexible learning spaces where learning becomes a more vibrant and passionate experience. All classrooms will become places where students and teachers can more easily interact with each other and with technology, allowing for different class units and even grades to work together on a day-to-day basis.

Both Howland and Schaumburg have already collaborated with teachers on multiple projects that cut across disciplines and divisions. While Howland tends to teach Lower School students and Schaumburg handles Upper School students, the intermixing of the two creates interesting results. “The information flow is wonderful both ways when the big girls explain what they are doing and the little girls get to show off their work,” Howland says.

But for now, the basic purpose of the Makery is thriving all on its own. Students were recently asked to write why they were grateful for the Makery (examples on these pages). The most recurring themes of their answers were that the Makery provided them creativity and joy of building, seeing their ideas come to life and learning new technologies. The playful nature of the space and the lightness of their words serve as a testament to the objectives of the space and focus of the faculty who steward it.

Schaumburg notes, “The best feedback is watching the Lower School girls run to the Makery during Open Make time (before school and at recess); they arrive at the door out of breath!”

The Makery was the epicenter for Burke’s week of activities surrounding Hour of Code in mid-December.

Hour of Code is a special initiative sponsored by Code. org, which is a nonprofit organization devoted to opening up computer science to a broader range of users, including women and underrepresented minorities, through expanding its presence in schools around the world. Each class that visited the Makery during its designated period that week took part in some kind of Hour of Code activity, whether it involved animating a poem on an iPad or programming a robot through an obstacle course — or a number of “unplugged” activities, such as coding dance moves on a whiteboard (pictured above). Activities also took place in individual classrooms and at home thanks to a family guide put together by Director of Curriculum & Program Innovation Michael Matthews.

MAKERY EXAMPLES Kindergarten: “The Breakery”

“The Breakery project in Kindergarten was based on the work of artist Todd McLellan, who takes things apart and then rearranges them to make art. The Kinders learned to use tools, wear safety glasses and find out what parts are inside electronics. ‘Righty-tighty, lefty loosey’ was a chant heard throughout this project.” —Jenny Howland, Makery Facilitator

First Grade: Trains and City Planning

The students learned a new piece of software named googol Choo Choo 3-D, which is a model train set for the computer. They discussed the different kinds of buildings they studied in social studies: Residential, Commercial, Institutional, Transportation and Recreational.

Afterward, they planned out a city with a robust train system and then ran the train on its system plan using 3-D views.

Third Grade: Personal Narrative Comic Life

Third graders used narratives they wrote in class to make comics using Comic Life software on the computers in the Makery. They explored how to arrange text, frames, speech bubbles and lettering to convey meaning as

they used the comic conventions to sharpen up their visual literacy skills. Key questions to explore included: “Where do you want the reader’s eye to go? How will you make that happen?“

Fourth Grade: Podcasts

As a collaborative project involving social studies, Library and Makery, the girls did research on an animal in the book Island of the Blue Dolphin. They took notes for a script in Library and used those notes to record a persuasive argument for renaming the island after their animal.

Then they used pictures, which were cited properly and licensed for reuse, to make a graphic to accompany the podcast.

They shared their podcasts with their classmates.

Eighth Grade: Independent Study in History

“In this project, the girls were allowed to study any part of American history during the 1700s, build a product to demonstrate their understanding and, in a presentation, explain how their topic related to the four worlds of history (economic, political, social and cultural).

Students built everything from models to flags to villages to bridges and boats.

More than 150 former Burke’s girls had an opportunity to catch up with each other, along with a number of current and former faculty members who were in attendance as well. Graduates from class years ending in 4 and 9 were honored this year, and the Varsity Vocal Ensemble from the Class of 2014 provided the entertainment. Returning chair Aimee Fowler Carlson ’85 once again oversaw this year’s event. Alumnae Luncheon 2015 is scheduled for Friday, April 24.

Lynn Bunim ’64

After graduating from high school at Burke’s, Lynn Bunim ’64 went to UC Berkeley. She recalls: “What a shock it was to go from a girls’ school with 30 in my graduating class to UC with nearly 30,000 students on campus!” She went on to become a Coro Fellow, received a Master of Arts Degree and became one of the first women hired as management at Pacific Telephone (now AT&T). In that role, she participated in the breakup of the Bell Telephone System and helped make PacBell Park (now AT&T Park) a reality. Lynn lives in San Francisco with her husband Alexander Fetter, a retired Stanford physics professor. She raised two daughters as a single parent and has four grandchildren.

When you were a student at Burke’s, what did you dream you’d be doing at this point in your life?

I didn’t dream past going to college. Remember, it was 1964. And while Burke’s was fully committed to giving us the finest education possible, there wasn’t a single conversation I can recall about what we might do with our educational training after college. The expectation was that you would graduate from college, get married, have a family and maybe be a teacher or nurse. There were no career-planning discussions or mentors for Burke’s students back then.

What is your favorite international city?

Paris. It is great in all ways… culture, architecture, cuisine, style and romance for starters. You name a quality, it just seems better if it is in Paris!

Who was your favorite teacher at Burke’s?

Hands down, Miss Haydock, our math teacher and much, much more, was my favorite! She came to Burke’s two years before my own mother, Jane Triest Burrows ’39, was born, and taught her 25 years before she was my teacher. Miss Haydock never changed, so I learned. This tall, lean, stern-looking teacher had

a way of always letting you know she was rooting for you to “get it,” whether it was a tough algebraic equation or a tricky geometry problem.

And when you did, she was the first to cheer you on with a big smile. Miss Haydock was a woman ahead of her time who must be smiling at all the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs for young women.

Who would you invite to your fantasy dinner party and why?

My guests would be Katherine Delmar Burke, Barbara Burke, the Distinguished Alumnae Award recipients and selected members of the current Board of Trustees and Alumnae Board. Why? I would love to see the faces and hear the reactions from the first two Burke’s School principals, while they hear the stories of what graduates have been doing and are dreaming to do in the 21st century.

What advice would you give to a current Burke’s student?

Dream! Dream big! And when you make your dream come true, create a new dream and go after it. Given the longevity of women today, current Burke’s students can pretty much count on having multiple opportunities to reinvent themselves. While I didn’t dream about where I would be at this point in my life when I was at Burke’s, in recent years I have been dreaming about what legacy I want to leave behind. Working to make those dreams a reality keeps me young!

ALUMNAE PROFILE

Renee Sharp ’88 When you were a student at Burke’s, what did you dream you’d be doing at this point in your life?

That’s a good question... when I was at Burke’s, 40 years old sounded incredibly ancient. I probably just dreamed that I would still be alive and not utterly boring.

What is your favorite international city?

Paris. (And if that makes me utterly boring, I’m OK with that. As long as I get to eat the baguettes there. And the cheese.)

Renee Sharp ’88 went to Lick-Wilmerding High School and then Rice University in Texas. After getting a master’s degree from Penn State, she pursued her twin passions for science and environmental activism at the Environmental Working Group (EWG), where she is now head scientist.

For the past three years, Renee has overseen the development and launch of a tool to help consumers understand what is in their packaged foods and how nutritious they are. Food Scores (www.ewg.org) launched recently with 80,000 foods in a searchable online database. “Despite vowing to never live in the East Bay, I now live in Berkeley and it turns out that I actually love it here!” Renee says.

Who was your favorite teacher at Burke’s?

Nancy Clark. She called us all her little “chickenbirdies.” Who could resist that?

Who would you invite to your fantasy dinner party and why?

Jesus and Buddha. Because I really want to know what they actually said before thousands of years of the game of telephone came into play. Seriously.

What advice would you give to a current Burke’s student?

Study hard. Have fun. Listen to your parents, but listen to yourself more. Follow your heart.

And make sure you go eat some baguettes fresh from the bakery in Paris at some point.

What could be a more appropriate role for a Burke’s Distinguished Alumna than to be involved in improving gender imbalances in the workplace?

LAREINA YEE ’87 IS A PARTNER at McKinsey & Co. in San Francisco working in sales and marketing for technology companies, but she also heads up the company’s “Women in the Economy” initiative to help organizations develop the potential of their female employees.

As a result, she makes frequent speeches on the topic at conferences and forums here and abroad, and she hosts McKinsey’s Annual Women’s Leadership Summit. She is also part of an ongoing research collaboration with The Wall Street Journal that looks at “Women in the U.S. Economy.” She says that she finds this work very rewarding.

After getting a master’s degree in international economics from Columbia University, Lareina worked in Washington, D.C. with the United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee and then went on to China to study and teach.

She joined McKinsey, which is a global management consulting firm, in 2000 in Hong Kong.

Debra Nieman reports that her daughter RACHEL BRODWIN “is a sophomore at Yale University, majoring in Ethics, Politics and Economics (EPE). She participates in an experimental theater group and an all-female sketch comedy group. She is also on the Yale Pistol & Rifle Club, having learned at West Point’s Summer Leaders Experience that she was a natural sure shot.”

JAELAH HUTCHISON is a junior at University High School. In the third week of July 2014, she traveled to Tulsa, Okla., to take part in the USA High Performance Junior National Volleyball Tournament, along with KELTY HORI and FRANCES ARNAUTOU ’12. Jaelah started as the middle blocker for the women’s A1 red team, which took the gold after beating the Puerto Rican junior national team.

Through the Years

Decades of yearbooks show the same iconic images through the lens of each era.

Works and Days, Burke’s yearbook, dates about as far back as the school itself does. In earlier years, the publication included images of graduating students along with poems and dedications, and even photos of recent alumnae weddings.

These days, Works and Days offers a far more comprehensive look at the school year with images from the full calendar of events as well as quizzes and games.

One thing that ties the yearbook together over that time is the use of classic Burke’s images. The tree, the shield, a Burke’s girl, even the name Works and Days itself — they all make appearances on the yearbook’s cover at various points in history, most likely at the whim of whichever group of students was overseeing it at the time.

What’s fascinating is seeing how those same images are filtered through the look and aesthetic of the day. From the regal 20s to the Art Deco 40s to the groovy 60s, each cover is practically an artifact in and of itself, with students’ creativity as the ultimate recorders of a slice of Burke’s history.
